I do it and don't pay much attention to how it affects my total. I don' ever play the lottery, so this is my little lucky part off the day!

I've been on the site for 5 years and have, until recently, been hooked on the points. I have over 169,000. I think they are a great way to get around the site, especially for newbies, and hit on all the features the site offers. By now I have read all the articles numerous times, done the quizzes more times than I can count and know most all the medical stuff I care to learn. I finally have run out of reasons to do the points and only do my tracking and forget the rest.

The points are meaningless, but the extrinsic motivation can help you to develop good habits when you are first starting out, such as expanding your knowledge base (reading articles, playing trivia), logging your nutrition and water, exercising on a regular basis, connecting with others and forming a support system by joining teams and commenting on message boards, etc.

All of these things really do help over time.

On the other hand, I notice that the people who have, say 30,000 Spark points and 10,000 exercise points are the ones who have been on the site for a long time without losing any meaningful amount of weight. So it's great to talk the talk and spin the wheel, but you also have to get off the computer and push yourself in real life if you actually want to get anywhere.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

Exactly like Hookchick said, it's just a little attraction that can work as a motivator. A lot of people couldn't care less about them, most people think they're pointless but fun, and a few people are nuts about them and will work their behinds off to get them. It's absolutely up to you whether you pay attention to them or not.

I think it's just an incentive; something game-like to appeal to those who are competitive. I usually spin the wheel if I remember, but I don't pay much attention to my total points or my level. A couple years ago I won $10 to spend in the SparkStore; that was nice! (I got a woohoo t-shirt.)

What exactly is the purpose of SparkPoints? I've used SparkPeople off and on before, so I'm not sure if things have changed with the points, but is there a purpose? I never bother getting my daily points or spinning the wheel an extra time because I don't see the point of it.
