The points are meaningless, but the extrinsic motivation can help you to develop good habits when you are first starting out, such as expanding your knowledge base (reading articles, playing trivia), logging your nutrition and water, exercising on a regular basis, connecting with others and forming a support system by joining teams and commenting on message boards, etc.
All of these things really do help over time.
On the other hand, I notice that the people who have, say 30,000 Spark points and 10,000 exercise points are the ones who have been on the site for a long time without losing any meaningful amount of weight. So it's great to talk the talk and spin the wheel, but you also have to get off the computer and push yourself in real life if you actually want to get anywhere.
