I set it according to BMI & seeing others of my similar build / height. I will adjust as it best suits when I am close to my goal.

I set my first goal at 10 pounds because that was an easy, attainable initial goal to get started. My ultimate goal is to be around 170-180 right now and see how I feel when I get there. I set this goal because it would be great to be a good amount under 200. The last time I was 180 was when I was probably 13-15 years old, which is over ten years ago and it will feel great to be there again.

Starting weight: 309.4
1st goal: 10.4 pounds, 299 by July 2, 2014 (met June 25th)
2nd goal: 30 pounds- 10% of remaining weight, 269 by October 15, 2014 (met September 24th)
3rd goal: 27 pounds- 10% of remaining weight, 242 by January 7, 2015

Like several others here, I chose a goal weight that matched the last time I was comfortable--could fit in "medium" clothing without buttons gapping, and could walk a flight of stairs without gasping for air. When I reach it and maintain for a while, I may decide to try losing another twenty pounds to get closer to get closer to my suggested BMI.

I've changed my goal weight a lot over the years I've been at this weight management game. I use the BMI as a general guideline as to whether my desired weight at a given period of my life is appropriate for my height.

Moving in new directions.

You're lucky. I wish I cared about small numbers. I don't. As long as my weight is doing down I'll be happy but I can't settle for anything on the scale until it reaches the number I really want.

I picked the weight I was (and was also the correct weight in my BMI range) before I started work and gained.

Now after starting to actively work on my weight loss two years ago I am in my BMI range again (upper level) so I don't need to lose any more weight but I am still working on reaching my initial goal.

Update: Though I might change my initial goal since I found out last week at the Doctors I grew an inch :D. Which would be the difference of me losing 13 or 10 pounds.

My goal weight is really just a number that I'm heading towards and whether I reach it or not I don't mine. (I probably won't, because I'll be looking at toning and muscle definition and that adds up, but in a good way) I'm going for a goal dress size, more than anything.

I set my goal weight at the last 'highest' weight I felt comfortable at and had some decent clothes. It wasn't my most comfortable weight. If....no, when I reach that weight, I will reset the goal and lose a bit more.

My current goal weight is 15 pounds heavier than my average weight for most of my adult life. I've had two children and a hysterectomy since then, and I am now in my early 40s, so I am not expecting my body to look the same after I lose as it did before I gained weight. I'll revisit it when I get down there and see how I feel.

Over my 120 loss, I have had many goal wts- short term, medium term, and ultimate. My ultimate was right in the middle of my normal BMI . I reached that, and went below it a bit, but it was too low for me, so I have settled at JUST under "overwt" BMI. Maintained for 2 1/2 yrs.

My ultimate goal weight is 10 pounds above the lowest weight I ever reached. It's more sustainable and puts me in the healthy weight range. The weight goal on my tracker is more moderate.

I felt my best at 135... but set my final goal at 140. I'll see how I feel then (and what my physician thinks).

I've set my ticker to show increments of 25 pounds. I don't know how to deal with a 130+ weight loss... but I KNOW I can manage 25 pounds at a stretch! emoticon

I set my goal weight at the upper range of the 'healthy' weight for my height and body type.

Since my dexa-scan shows that I have a large skeleton and am "big boned," I figure that would be an optimum weight for me and I wanted to be realistic and reach a weight I can maintain.

As I lose weight and get nearer to goal, I will reassess to see if I actually want to get that small.

My initial goal is to get to the weight recommended by my doctor which is 159lbs and at the top of the "healthy" bmi range for me. I am going to re-assess when I get there, but my dream weight is somewhere in the mid-140s.

My ultimate goal weight is 180 pounds, though that is not set in stone. I know that sounds kinda high, but for my height and bone structure, that would be almost perfect. Right now, I am setting small goals. I am 270 pounds right now, and my first goal is to reach my 10% weight loss, putting me at 243 pounds. After that, I will set it to 15% of my original starting weight, and so on. Once I reach 200 pounds, I will re-evaluate my ultimate goal weight.

I got my body fat tested, worked with a trainer in deciding what I want my body fat percentage to be and came up with a number from there.

If I reach my desired body fat percentage (19%) and weight, I'll still be at the top end of the overweight category for BMI.

I picked a number in the middle of my healthy range, but I am not really set on it. I am more interested in how I feel and how I look. Given my body type and muscular structure, the lower end of my range will never be possible, or desirable.

I was told that your goal weight should be appropriate for your height and you should eat 10 times the amount of calories as you want your weight to be. ( i.e. if my goal weight were 130 I should aim for eating 1300 calories a day) This amount fluctuates with amount of daily activity/ exercise.

My ultimate goal is 140, but I've broken that down, so my first goal is just to lose ten pounds. If I can do that, everything I wear now will actually fit properly again instead of being just a bit too tight, and I won't have to go buy anything in the next size up. I just do NOT want to do that!

I had never been at a healthy weight (always an overweight child/obese teen), so I looked at my BMI and picked a number 10 lbs under the highest number to have a good cushion, staying high because I tend toward muscular. I lowered it 5 lbs, but as I got closer, I was getting where I wanted to be at my original goal. I now I'm trying to maintain +/-5 lbs of 140lbs with success since the end of January. My doctor told me at 150 lbs that I could lose a bit more, but not too much.

I haven't chosen a specific goal weight but I knew I had a lot to lose so I broke it up into three smaller amounts. When I get down there, I'll fine tune the goal weight.

I'm not training for a competition. I'm not trying to set a new record. I'm not trying to impress you. I'm saving my life!

I've picked 140 because that is just inside the ideal weight range for my height and seems achievable. It is also about what I weighed when I graduated from high school 26 years ago, and I was pretty happy at that weight. I'd like to go lower (130 or so), but I don't know if that's possible to reach/maintain. And really, I'd probably be happy with 150.

I chose 150 to be conservative. I doubt that I will ever be 130 or less again, but I think I can get to 150.

I haven't set my goal weight yet. My short-term goal is to get under 200# (almost there), then I am aiming for "BMI=overweight" (185#) and then I will aim for "BMI=normal weight" (154# or less).

In the name of "rounded numbers" I'll probably aim for 145# (so that I can say I lost 100#) and for the sake of "reality" I'll probably aim-to-maintain "150 give or take 5#" as my long-haul goal.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

My goal weight will put me well into a healthy BMI. As one other poster mentioned...I don't want to be right at the top end, and have no room for plus/minus! Traditionally I seem to go up a few pounds come winter, and I want to keep myself well within limits.

I just posted something about this on another board. I don't know if it's the best way but I am taking it 10-20 lbs at a time. Having some difficulties and thought I would try this for awhile. I think smaller goals will work best. Hopefully..

I went to a Sports Nutritionalist and figured out my BMR which told me what my caloric rate should be when sedentary, when active, when vigorously exercising etc.....worked great as I found out exactly what I needed to eat per the activity level of my day

I don't have an exact number in mind, just an estimate. I think I'll know when I get there. At this point I'm guessing I need to lose another 35 pounds or so.

I know some times I have reached "goal" weights in the past, once through stress/disordered eating and once through unsustainable (for me) obsession with exercise, and I realize that I had set unrealistic expectations on myself. I am healthier and more injury-free now nearing my current goal weight than I ever was at that lower weight. My goal weight is on the high side of healthy BMI for my height, but I am muscularly built and I would look sickly at 130 lbs.

I kinda just pulled the number out of my head. Truthfully I have several goal weights in mind. I'm not totally sure what I want the final one to be. I just know that I have a small frame and would rather be on the lower end of the weight range for my height. I don't want to stop at a place where if I gain 5 lbs I will be overweight again. On my ticker I have the middle of a normal weight range for my height but I don't think I will be happy there. But I am trying to set smaller goals that seem more attainable to me. I am more motivated when I set a small goal and reach it. I feel like I've accomplished something. I don't want to wait til I've reached my final goal to feel that way.

Goals
March ~ 7 lbs goal met actual (9.4 lbs)
April ~ 5 lbs goal met actual (5.4 lbs)
May ~ 7 lbs goal met actual (7.2 lbs)
June ~ 3-4 lbs goal met actual (3.6 lbs)
July ~ 2-3 lbs

Initially, I chose it because, when I joined WW, 35 years ago that was the goal weight they set for me based on my height. Now I have lowered that 5 pounds, since regular workouts and reinitiating portion control, it lowered to what I now consider to be my normal weight. It is within my BMI range.

I have had a series of goals that have changed as my situation has changed. I have a "fantasy goal" that just popped into my head as I was meditating on the subject -- what I weighed as a freshman in college, the last time I felt good about my weight and my body. That weight is 118 and I doubt I will ever be that weight again.

When I first started my journey -- at 203 pounds -- I just wanted to down to 180, what I had weighed 10 years earlier. That would be a size that would fit most of my clothes. I knew how to dress at that size.

When I hit that weight, I lowered my goal to 160 -- as that would take out of the "obese" category of BMI and into the "overweight" category. It would also drop me a size.

Now I am focusing on getting "under 150" -- a nice, round number -- and it would put me at the "50 pounds lost" category. But I have set an official goal of 135, which would put me in the "healthy" category of BMI.

Good question. I have struggled a little with setting goals throughout this journey and will be interested in reading what others have to say.

I picked my original goal weight of 171 strictly on the blind pig find acorn rule. Thought I would never make it. Well, I did so I lowered my goal to 165 and met that. Then lowered it again to 160 and did get down to 162 once.

Now there is evidence that I am once again having some serious internal bleeding going on and when that happens, the body will store fluids in the body soft tissues. Hence, I am once again around 174 and I will be going through the "delicate" search for the problem. The last time I went through this, I lost 2 gallons of fluid while in the hospital. That's an astounding 15 pounds or so.

Short term problems that due to movement restrictions on my left arm (because of a pacemaker) I will not be able to have a colonoscopy until I am cleared for that.

I just chose a weight that I remember feeling very comfortable with (many years ago) although I won't be disappointed any time soon if I don't make it because I have a long way to get to that goal. I know that anything I lose right now is beneficial for me.

Since I didn't believe I would really lose weight and keep it off, I set my original goal weight pretty high and have lowered it by 5 pound increments over the years. It made me wonder how others set their goal weights.
