I've had back surgery for 2 herniated discs
An ergonomic desk chair is a definite plus...sitting for a desk job is very hard on the back. The support these chairs give you really helps. But there is no one chair for everyone. You have to try and fit the one best suited for your height, weight, and back. The only way to do that is to sit in them and feel if they give you the support you need where you need it.
And I did not slouch in my chair...my back would not allow it (too painful)...the chair helped me sit straighter.
I would also recommend buying an inflatable back pillow for traveling. They weigh next to nothing and pack nicely...and when you go somewhere, they are easy to use. (theater, car, transportation...). You simply inflate it just far enough to give you the support you need.
good luck..speedy recovery
