I've always loved eating, and could put away much more than I looked like I could (my mom still recounts the time I was 6 and ate half a lasagna). Despite this I was always thin and felt I could eat as much as I wanted.

Then when I moved out it was a combination of less walking/more driving, easy access to all the food I could possibly want, not realizing it was ok to not clean my plate, not realizing that there was such a thing as eating more than my metabolism could handle!

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

Meds with a side effect of increasing appetite. Then getting pregnant. Then giving up smoking (I didn't smoke when I was pregnant). After that I quit a meal replacement bar diet.

Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.

I don't have a definitive answer for that as I did not seem to be overeating and "all of a sudden" I had regained the weight I lost. i do believe it had something to do with some of the medications I take.

I was a chunky teenager. I was often told by my family that I was , "hippy". When I was 15 my parents left me and my brother. Just walked away. My way of dealing with this was to become anorexic. It is hard to explain. I just felt like it was the only thing I had control over.I was adopted by my best friends mom (who saved my life). She basically spent the following years dealing with my anorexia. At my lowest I was 88 pounds. I had a baby at 19 and somehow took in enough nutrition to have a healthy baby. In my 30s I stopped starving myself and actually got healthy. I had joined the military and you have to PT! Running was good for my health but bad on my back. 2 back surgeries later, no more running per my surgeon. Then 40 hit. Goodbye metabolism. At 43 I had my Thyroid ablated (Hashimoto's Disease) . I really miss my Thyroid. I ballooned up to 165! Counting calories does work. Who knew. I have finally started to take some of this weight off. And one thing I know, with determination, I can do it.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. ~Mother Teresa

Yes, when I was in my 20's. As best I can tell, the weight gain spiral began 18 years ago when I gained 25 pounds after quitting smoking. At the same exact time, I became a Christian and stopped going to bars drinking and dancing every single Friday and Saturday (lots of cardio in dancing). Then for whatever reason, I gained 1-2 pounds every year since then.

But really, all that is excuses...bottom line I ate more and exercised less.

But it is never too late to make the conscious effort to change one's lifestyle and that is why I am here.

I've never had to diet before, part of that being good luck genetically, the other being I've always had jobs that had some measure of physicality to them. Then I turned 40, quit smoking and got a desk job. (You should be able to HEAR the sound of my bum enlarging in that sentence, emoticon) The only times I've ever worked out before was after pregnancies to get back in shape, so that's my plan now. I do think it's time to keep track of what i'm eating now that I'm over 40 and have the desk job, you can't count on good genetics for everything....it'd be nice to regain the energy level I had with jobs where I had some physical work involved and not just mental work.

I've never been super thin as I've always had metabolic issues. Probably the skinniest I've ever been was when I was 19. I spent a year in Ecuador living with a family that never had any food in the house. Plus I was a vegetarian at the time, and much of the meat in that food culture is truly disgusting. There just wasn't much for me to eat. I was walking everywhere and getting a ton of exercise too.

Then I had a brain aneurysm when I was 28. In the years following, my pituitary gland failed, either due to the trauma of the aneurysm bursting right next to it or from the trauma of brain surgeries. I gained 80 pounds because of that. I never had bad eating habits and I always exercised when my health would allow it. I did eat too many carbs, but I have never been the kind of person who ate junk food or fast food. I didn't have any bad habits to begin with, just huge health challenges. I have to be incredibly strict with myself to lose any weight.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

I'm not "thin" but in a good place weight wise and have been so for a long time. For me the question is I've been overweight before and what happened? I lost weight a few times and drifted back up a few times over the past two decades, never as far overweight as I had once gotten.

Nothing happened. I just keep counting calories and exercising a lot and this time there will be no more going up beyond my range.

I think it's the "drift" that sabotages many of us. A person can drift until they have to start all over again, but I don't have long enough to live to do that over and over so, no "drift."

Lol, it is a good question.

Resolved in 2014 to remain below 120!

Lifestyle change is what happened. When I was in my 20's I had three children and became a stay at home mom for awhile. I gained weight from this because having 3 young children to care for 24/7 means you stop forgetting to make time for yourself. Then as my kids got a little older I began to make time for myself and lost a little weight. This past year I went back to school and gained weight because I spent every free minute sitting on my butt studying and eating junk foods because I was stressed. The key for me to stay healthy is to make sure I stay active and make time for exercise no matter how busy I get.

I think I had multiple things going on. Stress, kids, getting older, diabetes and denial. I think the denial is really what got me I noticed but was just not willing to change my lifestyle enough to make a difference so it continued. Now I am at my worst and hating my body.

I grew up thinking I was fat. I wasn't; I look back at pictures and see a healthy young girl looking back at me. My mom always talked about how fat she was and I just internalized that, I think. It became a self-fulfilling expectation in high school, and by the time I graduated I WAS overweight-- I think I probably weighed about 185-190 at the end of high school. (Not 100% sure because I avoided scales like the plague). That's what I weigh now; really, this is a comfortable weight for me, but I am in much better shape now and at least a size smaller.

Anyway, I just kind of stayed chubby-- drifting around in the 180's and 190's. Then I got married, and in the first year I gained 10 pounds. I went on Slim-Fast and lost like 25 pounds. Then I started student teaching for college and didn't really have time to work out, then I got pregnant. By the end of that pregnancy I weighed 250 pounds.

In 2006-2007 I started using sparkpeople for the first time. I went from 190 down to 145 in like six months. However, I almost immediately gained back about ten pounds of that. Still, at 155-160 I was at a healthy weight for my height, and I think a maintainable weight. But then I got pregnant again. And THEN I had a miscarriage. But even though I wasn't pregnant anymore, I kept gaining weight as though I was, and by the time I got to what would have been my due date I was around 190 again. Except for one more pregnancy, my weight hovered around there for a few more years.

Last year we had a really stressful year-- my daughter had eye surgery, my husband graduated from his master's program, he got a new job, and we moved to a new town. I put on about 15 pounds through that process, and then I went on prednisone for my rheumatoid arthritis and put on about 10 more pounds in like two months. Which took me up to my highest non-pregnant weight: 211 pounds.

I've lost the weight from the prednisone, even though I still take it, and I've lost last year's stress weight, and now my goal is to get down to a healthy, maintainable weight and then STAY there. My daughter is four and I don't want to give her the same body image issues my mom passed on to me, and I want to be a healthy role model for ALL my kids. I don't want to be skinny; I just want to be a healthy size and teach my kids to eat right and move their bodies.

I'll be honest. I've gone up and down enough times to sometimes wonder why I'm bothering with this in the first place. It's hard to think of counting my calories every day for the rest of my life, and I know from my previous experience that that's what I'm going to have to do to keep the weight off. Otherwise I just drift back to overeating and being sedentary. But I guess there's lots of things I'm going to have to do every day-- dishes, laundry, cooking, taking a million medications to keep myself feeling okay-- and so this is just one more thing. And maybe I won't be able to do it in ten years, but maybe I will. And I can definitely do it today. So today is what I'm going to focus on.

Erin

The problem was I just stopped dieting and drifted back into my bad habits. This time, when I reach goal, I'm going to have a maintenance plan in place and continue attending my slimming group as a life member. Last time I lost the weight I had lost approx 80 pounds over 2 years and thought I knew everything about weight loss and thought that I had the tools never to gain weight again. I'm so dissapointed in myself about letting the weight creep back on.

I've gone up and down a couple times. I was really skinny until the last couple years of high school when i gained weight due to poor diet and not being as active as I used to be. Shortly after graduation I became ill and landed in the hospital for a month. Over the next 6 months or so I lost 50 lbs which put my a little underweight. I didn't become overweight again until after the birth of my second child when I started taking the depot shot for birth control. Dr told me one of the side effects was weight gain but did't think I'd have a problem with it. Well I ended up gaining about 35 lbs in a year or so. I quit getting the shot but it's alot harder to get weight off than it is to put it on. I'd get 5 off then gain 10. Just kept doing this for years until I was so miserable I got serious about losing weight. At my heaviest I was 175 which is alot of a short person. At the end of 2011 I started doing WW and lost almost 40 lbs. Then I moved to Italy and regained 20 lbs. As of today I've lost 16 of the 20 I regained. I'd like to lose at least another 15 lbs.

Goals
March ~ 7 lbs goal met actual (9.4 lbs)
April ~ 5 lbs goal met actual (5.4 lbs)
May ~ 7 lbs goal met actual (7.2 lbs)
June ~ 3-4 lbs goal met actual (3.6 lbs)
July ~ 2-3 lbs

Started with anorexia at age 13 until I had my first child at 19. Having quit smoking 15 yrs ago and two more children along with work stress I'm now 50 lbs over weight. I'm confused as to how I got here given I have the complete opposite issue to face now. All I know is everyday I'm trying my best to eat healthy, be more active and have a healthy relationship with food and my body for the first time in 30 years. Like others I lost 20lbs only to gain it back. I think the first time it was the fear I was getting to obsessed that I stopped working on it, I was doing WW. I believe here at Sparks it not so diet focused but more a "healthy lifestyle" that I think I really can do this.

Well, I regained, I re-lost - lather, rinse, repeat - until ultimately, three years ago, I lost it for good.

Knock on my wooden noggin, no regain. The key was - and is - plain ol' tracking.

At my slimmest (never thin but definitely got to normal) I was fad dieting and exercising like crazy. Didn't learn what I needed to be healthy much less keep it off. Walked like crazy all over NYC, aerobics at night, and hiked on weekends. But I did too many carbs and had no real concept of portion control...so I got calorie creep.

lesson learned but now I don't do nearly as much exercise as I should.
I'm working on it.

this is the thinest I have been in my whole adult life. I always ate from my abusive childhood. I always tried to work on my weight but the pounds came right back on as I ate from my hurt. But through therapy I am in such a better place. Healed the pain so I don't need to eat anymore from that place.

Losing a crapton of weight is like being a recovering addict. You are GOING to relapse. I was NEVER skinny, at least not since I was four. I have no idea why I let myself get so big. Maybe because I was molested as a young girl, and I never told ANYONE until I was in my late teens. Maybe it was low self-esteem. Maybe it was a lot of things.
If I had been skinny, though, my kids' father would probably never have taken that initial interest in me. (He fell in love with my gian tass first, and was thrilled to learn I don't have a butter face.) If he had never taken an interest in me, I would not have the exact kids that I have, and I wouldn't have learned how much I'm able to survive.
After I had the K man in 2006, I was a whopping 320 pounds. I discovered sparkpeople, and I started out pretty well, but somewhere along the lines, I decided losing the weight the right way just wasn't fast enough for me, plus my kids' daddy and I were really going through some things, so since I couldn't control that, I reverted back to bulimic type behavior. As I've stated before, that ish is really easy to hide when you're clinically "morbidly obese." I got so many compliments about how great I looked that it merely encouraged me to keep at it. I got down to 203.5 and almost a size 14, and my kids' daddy begged me to please not lose anymore weight, because I looked too skinny. Shortly thereafter, I really messed up my knee, or re-messed up my knee and couldn't exercise, and I started gaining the weight back. I gained back the first 50 within the first YEAR, and the rest just slowly crept back on-because I really didn't give a flying flaming rat's patootie. Then last spring, I had the means to get some more clothes, and decided I needed some jeans. The size 24 didn't fit. I tried on the size 26, and much to my chagrin, they not only fit, but they were a little snug. I REFUSED to get a size 28. I figured I would just be a little more careful how I ate and stop drinking so much soda. I weighed about 311, and more when bloated. ARGH. In July, I was moving around a lot more because our boxers had a litter of puppies, and who doesn't move around more with puppies-especially eight boxer puppies? In November, I had a doctor's appointment, and was down to 304, but of course, it was my doctor's job to tell me to lose weight, which brought me back to sparkpeople and to where we are now.

3 pregnancies, gained 50 with each and lost 30 with each-that left me 60 # over my formerly ideal weight-but it was definitely worth it!

Rejection. When my husband threw me away, I just got fatter and fatter. One day I woke up and said "Hey, this isn't me!" Now I am working on building a better me and getting back to the person I once was.

metabolism changes as I got older

seriously. I eat much healthier and exercise way more than I did when I was younger and super skinny.

I was small most of my life.
In my mid 30s, a pain syndrome I have had life long started ravaging my ability to exercise. I was walking to work, and I did walk at lunch, but anything more was excruciating. I had always danced at concerts, hula hooped, etc, but heavy sweaters were painful. Hula hooping? Back burner. I'm still getting past an area of pain with it.
So I slowed down some. Then I moved to California. Discovered sourdough. Did not exercise more. Dealt with skin cancers, complete with a stay out of the sun order.
Did some job training. Not walking.

So now I'm 20 lbs over max goal. 30 over minimum.

A recent trip forced me into activity, and I feel much better. The scale number is the same, but the waist line is smaller. I'm going to stay on this!

My new goal is goal by 45. I have four months to shed 20 lbs.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.

What is your now?

I was fat as a little kid. I started some dieting in junior high and high school and see-sawed but I sure liked the "thin" periods a lot more than the fat periods. But I delt with life by overreating so it was a viscious cycle. I weighed about 170 at age 19 when I married my first husband.

I have kept my weight in the 120 or below range for about 7 years now.

I haven't been thin since the 5th grade until now. And by damn it feels good.

It all started with me when we moved to California in 1942 so dad could work in the defense industry. We lived with my aunt who ALWAYS had a pineapple upside down cake around Whoa is me.

I guess you could say I've never been thin but my weight fluctuated constantly. My job was very stressful and I put long hours in each day so there was no extra exercise and my eating habits weren't the best. I now count my calories on the tracker thanks to SP, eating much healthier, my stress has greatly reduced, and I am much more active. I love to walk and try to get my 10,000 steps in each day with wearing my pedometer each day. I do take my Sundays off for a rest. I know I'm on the right track and this is a life-style change for the better.

My doc made me quit exercising. I maintained for a couple months then started eating comfort food due to depression. Every time I gained it was because I was inactive due to medical issues. I've lost 10 now. 20 to go.

My "re-birth date" was also in 2007 -- in October, to be more precise. That's when I was diagnosed with diabetes -- and crossed the 200 mark to 203 pound. That 200 pound milestone really bothered me ... I didn't want to go on meds for my diabetes, so I went low carb and lost 40 pounds in the next 6 months ... adding exercise along the way. My lab results were spectacular.

Then the weight loss stoppped. At first, my doctor and I thought it was muscle building as I had added some weight training. I was still doing "lower carb ... not extreme low carb" at that point and my lab results were wonderful, but I gradually regained about 10 pounds and I was feeling tired, run down, etc.. Then I broke my ankle and got out of the exercise habit. Over time, I re-gained 33 of the 40 pounds back.

Eventually, the constant fatigue got diagnosed as hypothyroidism. Immediately after started the medication, I felt better and started losing again.

My thyroid function is slowly fading. Each time it drops a notch, my metabolism comes to a crawl and I gain weight until my doctor ups my dose. I've gone through 4 or 5 cycles of this pattern over the past few years ... but have managed to re-lose that 40 pounds and then some. Today, I got 2 tenths of a pound BELOW the 50 pounds lost mark. But I believe my thryoid functioning has dropped a little, so I am hesitating to change my icon to reflect that important milesone. My recent lab results weren't bad enough for my doctor to nudge my dose up a bit.

My ultimate goal is to lose another 20 pounds. (I fantasize about losing a little more than that, but don't think that is realistic.)

I just do the best I can each day.

Oh, I and almost forgot to tell you ... My doctor just officially changed my official diagnosis from "diabetes" to "insulin resistence." I have never used medications for my diabetes and have maintained acceptable lab values for over 5 years.

I chose to lose weight on December 17, 2007 and across the next 1 to 1 1/2 years, I lost 80 pounds and kept it off for awhile. And in the last 2 years or so, I am back up 40 and nothing has been helping. I have tried watching food carefully and exercising and would maybe lose 2-3 pounds and then stall out. I personally blame a little on not 100% measuring but also a lot on doctors who wouldn't help and the fact that I took some fertility pills about 1 1/2 years ago. Of course, those didn't work for their intended purpose and caused my body to go completely out of whack until recently. Things are getting back to normal and I dropped 2 pounds since the last time I weighed a month ago. I am hoping things are working again.

Pregnancies happened. :)

My nutrition habits have been poor since I moved out of my mom's house at 18. Fast food, chocolate, candy, frozen meals, etc.

I got pretty lazy for awhile too and addicted to the computer.

I managed to keep my weight down despite all this, I didn't eat much... until I became pregnant. I gained close to 60 lbs. Lost 15 lbs post-pregnancy. Then joined Spark and lost another 30 lbs. Then I became pregnant with my daughter and fell back into bad habits. Reached the same weight as I did with my son, 180 lbs. Lost 30 lbs in the first couple months. Gained 10 lbs a year a later and then rejoined Spark.

I've totally done a 180 in the last 9 months and am back to my pre-pregnancy weight, eat really healthy, cook all my meals from scratch, workout almost every day, never sit still, always; meal prepping, cooking, cleaning, playing with my kids, walking, hiking, gardening etc.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. If you don't want to get bulky, lift heavy!

I can bench Nicole Richie, eat more than she does in a day before noon, I have a good 20 lbs on her but could still wear her pants.

I was very active and then got bit by a tick and was misdiagnosed for about 4 yrs and when I started taking meds it created a war in my body and literally knocked me off my butt for a year and I put a ton of weight on. I'm chronic Lyme and they believe that it contributed to me getting Fibromyalgia, so it's tough for me to be active because of the daily pain I live with in my life.

Starting to like the new me!

I ballooned to 68kgs when I was on prednisolone.

Thankfully, I don't have to take it anymore and I'm now at a happy medium of 55.5kgs after being 57kgs for a 4 year plateau. I intend to go down to 50kgs.

I'm really short, btw, just 4 feet 11.

My re-birth date is July 1, 2007 - that was the day I made the decision to do this weight loss thing the right way; I walked, I counted my calories (macro-nutrients) and I started lifting weights.

I had reached my goal and then gained 15% of it back due to muscle mass building and settled at 180 (My new goal weight). I was maintaining @180 for 2 years then I slacked off and tried winging it and I gained 13 unwanted pounds. I started counting calories again and logging as I did before and l got back to 180 for almost another year then I ballooned up to 202 because I thought I gaining muscle mass but I knew it was just fat from bad eating.

That was this past November and since then I lost a solid 10 pounds and half way to goal weight again.

The initial weight loss journey is only the beginning my friends, only-the-beginning.
