Food definitely for me. Well, I should say food and drink. My nemesis is pop, and sometimes it calls my name a little too loud to resist.

Mostly exercise, because I know when I am being a slacker. But sometimes its just my body adjusting to the changes (and there have been a lot).

Thanks for the great common sense answer. I think it was what I needed to hear today. I have been on a weight plateau for a while now. My clothes are getting looser, but the scale is not budging. You are absolutely right in your statement that the body has to adjust. Good luck on your weight loss journey and congrats on your progress!!

I think I blame exercise more often. Generally my plateaus (like the one I'm on now from 211-214 lbs) have to do with me not taking the time to work out vs. changing my diet. Diet's a factor but not the largest one, personally.

I don't blame either - I figure my body is in a adjustment mode. It takes the body a while to this new weight and I just change my exercise to wake up the weight loss mode in another way.

The biggest one to blame isn't food or exercise, it's myself! I have times where I slack in nutrition and times that I slack in exercise. Either way, I only have myself to blame. Usually, I just haven't been putting effort in.

Sometimes, I like to think of these periods as learning to maintain the weight I had gotten down to during highly motivated times. Learning to maintain is important, so seeing that I can not gain the weight back without continuing to put monumental effort in is important because in the long run, I don't want to have nutrition and exercise be giant everyday obstacles to navigate.

A bit of both. And daily life and circumstances is usually a factor . . . . Life happens.
It doesn't take very many of the wrong calories to get my off my game . . . and it doesn't take many days of none or the 'wrong' type of exercise (ie strength when I need aerobic) as well.

But life happens, and this is what it's all about.

Its always about messing up on food. I tend to stick with my exercise and go hard. Its a great stress reliever. I mess up with food by snacking too often or eating above my calorie range.

Food (I have messed up my metabolism by doing extreme diets). I can work out for hours a day but if I don't keep my calorie ranges within the 1250 to 1350 range (everyday) I plateau every time. I can stop working out all together & lose weight staying in those ranges too. My weight loss is totally dependent on the food that I eat. End of story. emoticon

I usually blame food basically not eating enough of the right thing and since for the last couple of days I have not felt very well and my exercise is suffering so then I blame that.

I usually blame food - either not eating enough of it or going over the amount of calories recommended. It can be a delicate balance sometimes. I also have the bad habit of not getting enough sleep at times, which I know affects weight loss.

No blame. Weight loss needs to be sustainable, ultimately, so I figure it's healthy to maintain a new weight for awhile. It's kind of exciting to figure out what eating and exercise levels can keep my weight steady, without regaining what I just lost. Then I figure out how to switch things up to lose more.

Eat to fuel your body, instead of working out to offset calorie consumption.

Courage comes from the Old French for "heart". To be courageous literally means to do something heart-felt.

Great responses here. I think it is a combination of a few things. The food, exercise, but then also body adjusting. Sometimes it isn't anything you can do (from what I can tell).

I find it's neither. Every 5-10 lbs of loss and I seem to get "stuck" while my body adjusts. Sometimes the loss will start again on it's own but often it starts again when I get frustrated and eat some kind of indulgent food.

Sounds like up-day-down-day dieting or alternate-day dieting, or perhaps calorie cycling. You might be interested in reading about it, as a method for overcoming plateaus and communicating to your body that there is no calorie shortage, so yes, it can go ahead and let go of the weight.

Actually, I don't really blame either, exclusively.

I do, however, realize there are lots more to life than just food and exercise, and all other being equal - sometimes it's my body adjusting, or stress, or a whole lot of other things.

I waffled around a particular weight (one to two pounds either side) for over eight months, while I was going through a very stressful time at work, and an entire upheaval of our schedule with my hubby beginning college, and other things.

So, I took it as a learning experience; tried to maintain the habits I could control (food/exercise), and worked through it. Additionally, I don't have much more (if any) to lose. According to the charts, I've reached a healthy BMI, and have undone the five years of gain that I unfortunately inflicted upon myself.

I usually plateau for about a week every month. Otherwise, like others, when I plateau I just change up the exercise or calorie count. I trust the numbers, though. If my daily differential is negative, eventually the loss will show up on the scale. It took me a long time to gain all my weight, and it took a long time to get it off, too.

When I plateau, I don't blame food or exercise. For me, when I plateau, it has been because I have been drinking alcohol. So many unhealthy, empty calories in beer and wine ! I can only lose weight when I stay alcohol-free. I drank quite a bit during March and plateaued. I didn't drink for 4 entire weeks in April and lost 4 pounds. It really makes a difference for me.

First I'd blame hormones (though had been scratching my head on that one), then I'd blame food, then tangentially exercise.

I'd been on a two year plateau here on Spark ...

I very what I eat from day to day but lunch normally stays the same.

Breakfast is Cereal or a poached egg
Mushrooms on toast

Lunch is nearly always
Wholegrain rolls
Cooked meat and yogurt

Dinner

I was told by a nutritionist its a little of both. She said when exercising to begin doing totally different ones that utilize different muscles, and the same thing with food. She said body does get used to routine and "quits". Hope this helps.

Kudos, I thank you for your encouraging words of experience. We are continuously learning on our journey's path, and I do tend to feel very down when I reach that point. So, thank you very much for another way of looking at things. Given that perspective, I can not judge myself so harshly. Though, honestly, I do tend to blame it on food intake and my lack of exercise. =)

Usually I blame food so I don't have to exercise!

The scale doesn't measure improved health, reduced pain, and a better lifestyle.
