It has helped me. I have a CD with 3 programs on it (long, medium, and short versions). They have helped me with portion control and with establishing some healthier eating habits. They haven't dramatically changed my life or solved big issues in my life ... but they have given me encouragement (like an "inner cheerleader") and strengthened my ability to make healthier choices regarding what to eat and how much.
I don't use them consistently ... and I find that when I haven't used them for a while, I start drifting towards unhealthier decisions. When I start listening to them again, I start hearing that little voice in my head encouraging me to just eat a reasonably-sized portion. ("Eating half and leaving half ... Eating half and leaving half.) I still have the freedom of choice, but I find myself having the strength to make the healthier choice more often.
I believe that whether or not they will be successful depends both on the particular approach of the hypnotist and the receptivity of the person being hypnotized. I don't think some approaches would work for me -- such as making me repulsed by my favorite food ... or trying to make me not enjoy eating. But the program I have is less extreme. It lets me enjoy food and choose the foods I like. It just encourages me to enjoy it in moderate amounts and in healthy ways. Because it gives me a message that I believe in, I don't fight it. I "go with it" and let it help me.
