When I first started my major weight loss, which was almost two decades ago, I had some audio tapes that were supposed to be "self-hypnosis." I don't remember the name of them. They probably didn't hypnotize me but had positive messages and were relaxing. I doubt if they had any effect on my weight, but I am a person who has trouble feeling positive sometimes so I liked them.

It has helped me. I have a CD with 3 programs on it (long, medium, and short versions). They have helped me with portion control and with establishing some healthier eating habits. They haven't dramatically changed my life or solved big issues in my life ... but they have given me encouragement (like an "inner cheerleader") and strengthened my ability to make healthier choices regarding what to eat and how much.

I don't use them consistently ... and I find that when I haven't used them for a while, I start drifting towards unhealthier decisions. When I start listening to them again, I start hearing that little voice in my head encouraging me to just eat a reasonably-sized portion. ("Eating half and leaving half ... Eating half and leaving half.) I still have the freedom of choice, but I find myself having the strength to make the healthier choice more often.

I believe that whether or not they will be successful depends both on the particular approach of the hypnotist and the receptivity of the person being hypnotized. I don't think some approaches would work for me -- such as making me repulsed by my favorite food ... or trying to make me not enjoy eating. But the program I have is less extreme. It lets me enjoy food and choose the foods I like. It just encourages me to enjoy it in moderate amounts and in healthy ways. Because it gives me a message that I believe in, I don't fight it. I "go with it" and let it help me.

My sister paid 75 bucks for several sessions, says it was as good as a one night stand, helped for awhile, but didn't last, no matter how much you yakked to yourself about it.

Self hypnosis can help, there is a small article in May issue of Health magazine with some affermations you may want to repeat to yourself daily.

Try self hypnoses by telling your brain over and over again that you eat only heathy food like a person of normal weight, that you exercise every day, that you are healthy and happy and you will find that over a period of time you will begin to put steps on place to achieve your goals. Save your money as you can really do it yourself.

Not for me. Don't believe in it at all. I tried it long time ago to quit smoking and you guessed it, IT DIDN'T WORK. Eventually, I just quit cold turkey and haven't smoked to this day. It's all about how badly you want something for yourself and your own good health.

DragonChilde is Correct, hypnosis won't take away the reasons you emotionally eat. For me, what worked is keeping a written journal keeping track of everything I ate for the day, along with my mood when I did reach for junk-and boy did I eat the junk! At the end of the week, I'd read my entries found out my emotional triggers, then created a deversion when I suspected a situation would cause a junk food binge or overeating.

This, like the pills, the crash diets, and the supplements, are all bandaids. They may work, in the short term, but they don't address the root cause of the problem.

Hypnosis won't take away the reasons you eat emotionally. So why waste the money on something that isn't solving the problem?

I tried hypnosis and about every other scam.. worked for a few weeks while I was feeling good about my "new start", then when reality kicked back in, well forgot all about the hypnosis and went back to my old ways. Save your money.

a lifetime ago I tried it...along with ear staples they said would suppress appetite.
(Some doctor running a practice in an expensive office in mid-town NYC)
never went back.

My reaction is ... it's like looking for a 'magic pill' that will convince someone to do what they already know they should be doing. If hypnosis is a suggestion to the subconscious mind...aren't we already bombarded with all kinds of suggestions that we need to eat healthy and exercise to lose weight.

Bottom line...a person needs to decide that they want a better life and commit to making changes ...otherwise, results will probably be short term at best.
Are you getting sleepy yet emoticon

Has anyone tried hypnosis to end their bad eating habits? Whether it be emotional eating, overeating, or boredom eating, binging, or sugar cravings? What were the results? Short-term; long-term?
