I grew up on a farm, so most of the time we were outside. I don't remember hardly ever being inside during the day.

One day at a time.

Oh yes, rode bikes all over the small town, skated all over the town, played baseball at the schoolyard, no fences so you could. Had fun!

"Go outside and play," was a constant in my life and when we had to come in when it got dark or the street lights went on, we'd be bummed out. Sometimes someone would even cry cause they had to go in.

We were street-proofed too. Don't go with strangers, don't get close enough for them to grab you... all the usuals. Once a man stopped and asked me for directions and offered me a ride and I just did the usual... didn't walk up to the car, said no thanks and kept on walking. It wasn't a big deal. I handled it because I was prepared. I knew what he was, but I wasn't fazed.

As a teacher, I still tell kids now, that they don't go with strangers, but they can talk to them from a distance. And they can use their instincts to know when to run, scream, kick etcetera.

I just don't believe in not street proofing people. They need tools. I know several teens who are afraid to go a few isles over in the grocery store to pick up milk alone. I don't understand how they are going to function in the world.

My neighbourhood, though in a big city still has kids biking and hanging out on their own from time to time. I love it. And I believe they are lucky to have that, even though I know very few neighbours.

I climbed trees rode bikes my brother and I were very active outside. heck I wish I were that way now with my kids but unfortantley my weight is stopping me from doing so

I grew up in a NYC housing project....we were outside more often that we were inside. All ages of kids playing different games and just hanging out. I'm amazed at how much exercise I got back then vs kids today.

@I heart my fam...
I know what you mean I always had my son in the backyard playing and if he did go out front I was either glued to the window or sitting out on the steps or playing ball with him.
I was almost taken as a child on the way walking to school, so that was something I was very fearful of with my son and he even took Karate because it was something I promised myself once I had a child he'd know how to defend himself just in case.
My son also had the swing set and a nice backyard to play in, but it's sad cause you can't really feel safe having your kids out in the front.
There have been many a time just walking in Walmart, Christmas Tree Shop that I've seen men looking at my son and even others children and I've told parents that let their kids run up ahead that someone was watching their child.
I'll never forget the feeling of the day I was almost taken and had to run for my life, I'd never want to see a child hurt from me not opening my mouth to what I saw...

Starting to like the new me!
Waiting for my garden to come to life!

Yes. The neighborhood I grew up in had a lot of kids and we played outside as long as the weather permitted. We also had a park nearby that we could walk to. It's sad but that same neighborhood has hardly any kids anymore and the yards are getting smaller due to bigger houses being built. You don't see a lot of kids playing outside like there used to be.

When ever we could, we would stay outside until our mother made us come inside. Loved it!! My kids love it too!! They cry when I make them come inside, even if it is because it is raining. My little guy would stay out in the rain as long as he was outside.

Playing was not playing if we weren't outdoors. After school no matter the weather it was home, change your school threads, grab a quick snack and out the door. summer was the best because you could be outdoors all day, hikes, bikes, skates and hula hoops were my favorites. Our kids enjoyed the same kind of childhood. I feel for the kids today, they are missing so much healthy fun and it shows.

Wow! This brings back fond memories! I grew up on a farm so we had our chores to do during the week day before we caught the bus to go to school. When we got home, we'd do our homework first and then have a bit of fun. My sister would usually clean up the dishes while I helped my parents in the barn milking the cows. Summer was haying time and we were very busy during that time. Lots of calories burned at the time even though I never thought of it that way. I always find time to play with my sister who was just slightly older than me. To this day, we are still very close. I'd ride my bike, play in the corn field, go out to the field to visit the cows (I had a favorite named Molly), go swimming in the nearby river, play cards with my grandmother, etc. We were always outside as much as possible and rarely watched TV until late in the evening. I enjoyed going down memory lane!

Yes, I do remember all of that freedom we had as kids. I never see kids out past 5 now. I only see the little ones out when parents are out with them. If I see someone on a bike it is a teenager sometimes, but mostly bums. I am sad to say I did not let my kids play outside as much as they wanted to in front. Fear was set in me. I moved in my house 16 years ago and within that first year here there is no doubt in my mind they were almost kidnapped. I so wished I would have called the cops, but what would they do on a hunch? As time went by I saw it more clearly. It was after dinner ,I was finishing up the last few dishes. I sent the kids out to the mini van, they were ages 2 and 6 to clean up their mess as I walked back and forth as I dried dishes. The third time I walked back out up to the van door and a man was walking around the van and he seemed very surprised to see me., because I was not there when he parked and the van was blocking his sight of me walking out since he parked on opposite side. He looked nervous and asked for directions. He parked on opposite side of van doors so kids would not see him approach. I guess I should have called the cops, but I was also in shock and thanking God knowing just what was stopped. I did have a nice big jungle gym and plenty of stuff to exercise with in back yard, and their dad and I did take them out bike riding, etc. but just going out for their own bike ride and such wasn't happening. A crowd of kids would gather two houses down to play thther ball I allowed that sometimes as I walked in and out constantly to check them. I wouldn't breathe correctly until they were in safe though. I think kids freedom has been taken away big time, so us adults have it easy compared to them.

sis & I have talked about this a lot. We never got bored, or said 'there's nothing to do!' We had a treehouse, and a rope swing. We made 'forts' out of pine straw. Went 'exploring'. Lordy, we were gone all day.

I was at the park Sunday and saw several families with their kids. Nice to see them throwing a frisbee, playing football or baseball, riding bikes, seeing who could run the fastest, etc. We definitely need more of that!

At the time, I wanted to stay inside because I am an avid reader. But my mom pushed me out the door. My brothers and I would go out and only go home for lunch and dinner. After dinner,
we played street hockey, football, softball, dodgeball and other games until our parents called us in. We didn't have to worry about anyone bothering us. Everyone in the neighborhood knew
everyone else. If you did something wrong, you would hear about it from every neighbor about
how our parents were waiting for us at home and that we better get going.
My problem with weight gain began when I ate at home and ate at my grandmother's house.
She lived across the street when I was small. It lasted for awhile until my grandmother called my mom asking where I was at dinner time one day. I was so grounded!!! Neither one realized that I was eating at each other's house.
But growing up it was nice that everyone knew everyone. At the time I didn't like it but now I miss those days. In my late teens was when everyone started to move away to other areas of the city, state or across the country. Our neighborhood became obsolete. The street I grew up on is no more. It belongs to the mill which is still in operation today.

Yes I do. I rode my bike, roller skated, and played all day during the summer. During the school time, I was a latch-key kid.

One family in the culdesac across from us used to ring a triangle to tell their kids when to come in for dinner. It was a quiet little suburb.

Everyone knew everyone and watched out for each other's kids.

Remember the good ole days when you could go out on a summer day play all day only going in when you were hungry, then going back out and not coming home till the street lights were on? I remember that and mom didn't have to worry about anything being done to you or you being stolen everyone just looked out for one another.
I think kids are having weight issues now cause you just don't find neighborhoods like that anymore where everyone watched out for the other kids in the block and moms don't feel safe sending the kids out.
I know we have a lot of kids on our block and I will sit in the window sometimes and just watch if someone new is in the neighborhood around the kids.
We never knew how much calories we were burning riding our bikes up and down the street, running around like nuts hahaha boy the good ole days!

Starting to like the new me!
