I've never come across an eating contest in UK. They might happen, but I don't think it's common. I watched one on one of the Beethoven films ages ago and wasn't impressed with the idea.

I find them repulsive.... but handle that by neither participating nor supporting. Otherwise I have a laissez faire sort of approach. I don't much like mud wrestling either!

Absolutely disgusting to watch......I still don't know how anyone could eat that many hotdogs in 5 minutes......definitely not a natural thing for your body either!

They are gross, but I guess if a few people think that is fun once in a while, I am not one to make an issue of it.

I have only witnessed an eating contest once. Actually it was a redneck relay type race and the eating contest was jus one of the activities the participants had to compete in.

A good friend of ours won that contest overall but did very poorly in the eating contest part. He was a person in very good shape, not overweight and excelled in the physical components of the race. I could not watch the people gobbling down pop tarts (they were not allowed anything to drink with it). Yuck.

I agree, I think they are disgusting! It goes without saying it's unhealthy to stuff yourself full like that, especially with the food used in contests, like hot dogs. Plus it just screams gluttony to me! One of my good friends has been in several eating contests, and our other friends seem to think it's really cool, so I usually keep my mouth shut! emoticon

I wonder how this form of competition ever arose in the first place. Like who was the first person to have the bright idea......??

I guess it developed in another era altogether, and perhaps should have stayed there.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I think they are disgusting on SO many levels. It encourages gluttony. It...if you think about it...wastes food that could so easily feed the poor and homeless. I think instead of eating contests, that food should be taken and given away to people who will really appreciate it-to people that don't know where their next meal will come from.
Eating contests are physically dangerous. Like you mentioned-choking-but also over stretching the stomach to the point of it ripping.

I can't stand watching people shove food into their mouth and attempting to swallow. I can't imagine what the payoff is for such a disgusting act! I feel sorry for their body as it has to hit them like a lead balloon when all that food enters their stomach. Most times, I bet it comes right back up. Some people just don't care about their bodies.

I am surprised at how many church fund raisers offer these contests...even though most view gluttony as a sin. It really turns me off.
Some people are very attracted to the specter of seeing people stuff themselves. The Travel Channel even had a food reality television series called Man v. Food which ran from 2008 thru 2011.

I don't get it

I think they are disgusting - watching people shove food in as fast as they can and not particularly healthy food at that. You never see a broccoli eating contest - it's always pie or hot dogs or some other messy thing. Not to mention it sets a bad precedent for people that it's OK to eat that much. They have to train and eat like that to be able to do it in "competition".

Lay aside life-harming heaviness and entertain a cheerful disposition.

What do you think of eating contest? I don't care for them myself. I always get scared someone is going to choke. They call it a sport .I know all sports carry risks, but at least there is benefits to them like good exercise working the muscles burning calories etc. There are no benefits to eating like a hog.
