Been there, done that. I love the potluck thing, though--I always bring a dish that I MYSELF can eat. But sometimes there are even business events involving catered food--then what? LOL

I've found it helpful to have a healthy snack before I leave... something tasty with a fair blend of protein, fat and carbohydrates-- like tuna salad on unsalted crackers, or cottage cheese with strawberries. And half way through the event, I have even made it a point to excuse myself and go to the restroom--to brush my teeth! Nothing but water or seltzer after that...

Sounds kind of weird maybe, but I really hate to eat with the freshness of the minty toothpaste in my mouth. And they make little disposable pocket toothbrushes now, so I'm not the only one who does this...LOL

Just some ideas...
Kathy emoticon

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called

Social eating is a real challenge for me. I have to fess up. When I eat with other people I have to really watch myself. I can get very greedy in social situations where there is food and other people. I want to eat it all up; like so many choices, so little time! I really do better by myself. This is a real problem for me. It always has been. I am working on it.

My friends seem to think it's okay to eat out socially. I do not join them for several reasons.
Food intolerances, swallowing/motility and I'm not a food person. I allow myself 20 minutes to eat then I either throw it away or refrigerate it for a snack.

Yo ticker! Thank you for moving down:)

Yes because it is hard to find something healthy at fast food places or small diners. And i hate eating salads all the time and see someone else like my friends son and daughter who can eat anything and not get fat.

You can call me Laura.

Yes, social eating is very difficult for me! Especially when it comes to desert! If the hostess prepared it at her home, it is doubly hard to turn it down!

Potlucks are real hard for me. I focus on eating all salads, then a small amount of desert. I rarely eat main/meat courses at potlucks. And I usually eat too much desert!

Sometimes, it seems to get better when I give my self a pep talk before going out with friends. I talk to myself like they would "hey try this" "this is amazing you have to taste this" "it's just one night eat whatever you want" Then when it happens it's easier for me to push them off.

I find it much harder now that I am in maintenance. When I was actively working on losing I just said no to everything and had my water or club soda. But now, someone sees me take a bite of something and everything gets pushed. "try some of this" "and this" It is hard to keep the line.

Social eating is a challenge because I'm a vegetarian; but I'm used to it and it usually goes pretty smoothly! I actually gave up being a vegan after a year because it was WAY too much of a social challenge. Just eating healthy shouldn't be a challenge, unless it's challenging those around you to make healthy choices as well!

What are you waiting for?

I do think socializing is hard as you are faced with so many choices. I try and choose someone who I think eats healthy and follow their lead. I have also called places in advance to see if they have low calorie options and if not study the menu and try and order something and eat only part of it. The real problem for me is that once I am off track I tend to continue down that path because for years I was dieting and it was always this is the last night I am going to eat and I would then eat like it was my last night. My spark attitude is different, I am making a lifestyle change and if I want something I have it and get back on track.

Yes. I can easily talk myself out of my plans for a healthy meal when another person is along. But then, I can easily talk myself into a solo trip to the donut shop if I'm craving bad enough. Anytime I'm out of my planned routine, I slip easily. It's almost like I trick and dare myself as to whether or not I'll slip up. Like I do it just because I know I will anyway. When I get back to my groove though, I have no trouble saying "no thank you."

If I can ride a bike, drive, quit smoking, run a half marathon, marry my dreamboat, graduate summa cum laude, (etc)...I CAN DO THIS!!!

I'm actually better at social events. I talk more, so less food in.. When I'm home alone is when I have to be careful not to snack while I watch TV or I am on the computer.

I understand what you are talking about. This is why my husband and I won't label ourselves "vegetarian" even though we never have meat in our home. Eating meat won't make me sick, it's just a personal choice, so I don't feel right forcing a generous host out of their cooking comfort zone in order to host me.

So, like other's have said, I'll try to eat less meat and more veggies. Admittedly, even this can be difficult in situations where the host has clearly predetermined what they consider to be a serving size, and made that much for everyone, so it's awkward to take an extra large helping of one dish. In that case I might just have to take smallish servings and hope I have a snack out in the car, for the ride home :)

Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often, as our social circle doesn't revolve around food. We're pretty active and tend to socialize through outdoor activities.

As far as the white bread and dessert...well, I also don't keep much around the house, but enjoy it, so when offered, I'll indulge and count it as a "splurge meal/day," like others have said.

Not with my family and friends, but yes at work if my boss is present. My boss is very team-oriented, and if someone on the team has a birthday, we all must celebrate - and celebrate to her doesn't mean just show up and sing and visit, it means actually eat the darn cake. In the past, I have said, "No, thank you," because I don't even like cake, but I have gotten the message that she thinks you're not being a team player if you don't eat! Weird but true. Now, I just track the cake or whatever it is and move on. Fortunately, it isn't someone's birthday every day.

I never have liked eating in front of anyone...but now that I'm purposefully avoiding certain foods, I do find it pretty difficult....I would never want to offend anyone, but I really want to lose this weight too.,..so I guess it would depend on the situation, as far as whether I would eat or not....

YOU MUST BE "POLISH" SO AM I . Let me give you a clue, from experience that any social drinking is "high calories". I am 72 1/2 yrs. old and have done a lot of socializing. I use to weigh 220 lbs. while socializing. SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL. GOOD LUCK TOWARD'S YOUR GOAL.

I agree with you completely, when eating by the generosity of another host, it is very difficult. Most people prefer to prepare those sinful dishes that no one in their right mind would eat all the time, and like you, I would rather not eat them at any time!

It's easier at restaurants of course, when you can pick the lesser of the evils, but when dining at someone's home it is really a struggle some times. I've learned to take a small portion of almost everything (there are dishes I will refuse if I just can't eat it) and if my host notices and comments I will just say that it's all very wonderful, but I am trying to watch my portion size.

Most of my friends know that I prefer to eat healthfully and minimally they will have a few healthy selections so I don't go away hungry :-)

Good question!!

I was out just the other night at a sports bar with some close friends for one of my friends birthdays. I didn't drink which wasn't difficult but I did find myself really holding myself back from taking one of the "tables" onion rings. I'm on a diet and training for my first 5k so that was hard to hold back but I did it. Diet wont last forever but healthy choices will! :-)

I find myself eating less, sometime not eating enough to feel full, when with a group of people or at a resturant, guess its because i'm "big" and don't want to appear or tagged as the "fat person" that can and will eat everything in sight.

Yes, I used to struggle with Anorexia and when I gained back all my weight I was embarrassed to eat in front of others for fear they might think I was being a pig or for fear they might comment on how or what I choose to eat. I am much better now but its still something I struggle with occasionally. emoticon

One of the things I try to do is look up the menu online before leaving, as early in the day as possible. Most times, we usually have at least a few hours prior knowing that we are going out to eat. I find what I want, figure out the calorie count to the best of my ability online ahead of time and then attempt to budget those calories into the day. I will eat as little as possible and stick to the item I intended to order so that I can keep the calories reasonable. Many people now have smart phones, so even in last minute circumstances, you can use your phone to figure out healthy choices and try to stay as close to your daily goal as possible.

I was terrible last Thursday night. I overate, drank (especially drank) and I know very well that my system cannot take that type of drinking. I don't know what got into me, but it was as though my brain had gone on vacation and I feel like such a fool.

Today, I went biking and feel a lot of better about myself, but I have been beating myself up for the past 3 days, and I don' think that helps a whole lot either.

Yes I do. I find that eating is now a source of fuel, not for comfort. Earlier it was such an enjoyment to socially eat,but now that I look back on it I find that I nibbled all throughout the outing, drank more than I should have and just ate bad. (lol). Today I prefer to eat at home and then get out and do things exciting besides eating.
