I feel pressure at an event like a dinner party, where the host or hostess has made all the food. If I indulge, it is only a little bit. Other than that, I can usually control myself. I feel the most support from my parents on being healthy. My sisters are proud of me, but sometimes, they just don't understand why I can't just indulge in 1 slice if pizza or full-fat ice cream or milk. Yesterday, we went to the Grilled Cheese & Co. for lunch. They did halfsies with the Crabby Melt (cheese, ooey, gooey crab sandwich) and The Sweetest Thing (Brie cheese, raspberry preserves, chocolate chips), while I managed a house salad, no cheese, with grilled chicken, and balsamic vinagrette on the side.

Long ago I used to get paranoid about this. It was so hard for me to stay on track that I did not want anything to throw me off. Once I brought WW ice cream to a dinner with friends. They didn't know what to do with me. they were all thin and eating all the tasty things that were served, including dessert. I went home and actually forgot to take the ice cream home. it was very awkward and I did not feel supported at all. Now that would not happen. I would bring something others would eat and I would control myself with what was served. Chris

Yes. I so don't like to eat out. I have a paralyzed vocal cord so I have to focus hard on eating. I sometimes get choked up, which is very embarrassing when out in public. Also, I like to enjoy the food combos I make at home. I do enjoy eating together with my DH and DDs. That is always a joy.

yes, i often find it challenging. sometimes because of peer pressure, but, often because i let let myself slide. like it's okay to eat everything because it is social, even though i know it is not. i also can overeat when uncomfortable. sometimes it's awful

Very much so. Today I'm meeting a friend for lunch. We've decided our location so I looked at the menu in advance and have made a decision on my lunch choice. I've already put it in my food tracker. Also must stick with the plan of water only and NO dessert. It sounds easy on this end but when you're actually there I have to stick with my plan and not make changes.

Yes. I have just got back from a short holiday and I didn't manage to stick to plan. i managed for the first morning but then my resolve just melted away and I had wine with my meal followed by a dessert and then i just thought I may as well enjoy myself, have what i like and start afresh when I get home. It's made me realise how much I associate food with having a good time. I'm going to be really strict for the next few days to counter the overeating and since I wasn't away too long, hopefully there's not too much damage been done. Clearly I need to develop better strategies for social eating!

I think it's so much easier to eat out at a restaurant versus eating in someone's home. At least with restaurants you can usually look up the nutrition info and there are often "healthy" options. It's a lot harder to track home cooked food and you can't choose a healthy alternative to what everyone else is having!

I guess it depends on the company. If I'm among people I'm really close to, I just budget my food intake accordingly. I'm at maintenance, so I allow myself two "big-eating" days a month, and I use them for social eating.

Yes, the social awkwardness and pressure are usually the toughest part for me too. If I'm at a restaurant and I don't want in on the apps or I order something small, I definitely get some grief from my friends. It's good-natured but it still makes the decision to be "good" really hard. It's also tough when I go out for dinner one-on-one with someone who does not want to feel alone and guilty for ordering something (either in quantity or quality) that is indulgent. I feel bad ordering something small and/or healthy because it makes it harder for them to enjoy their meal. But, I manage, most of the time. Underneath it my friends do care about my health and want to support me.
Food-temptation-wise, I am *very* fortunate at work right now as there are three or four of us that are watching what we eat very carefully so we're nearly a majority! It used to be almost impossible to go the whole day (every day) ignoring the treats people brought in.
If I'm at someone's house it's a little different as I'll usually have just a very small amount of whatever they have made so as not to be rude. I don't often eat at peoples' homes though.

Yes, I find social eating a challenge. It is hard for me to say "no" to a hostess when food is offered. Sometimes I can and sometimes I can't. It all really depends on the situation.
For some events, I try to eat a big leafy salad before I go so I'm not too hungry. I also do pretty well if I take very small portions of the irresistible foods so I don't feel too deprived. I try to stay as far away from the buffet table as possible too. Sometimes, I don't even go into that room.

The biggest issue I have is eating out with my co-workers every single day!! For the most part I just tell them I brought my lunch; sometimes I actually eat with them and others I take my bottle of water to the restaurant and drink that while they eat, then eat my lunch when I get back to the office.
Other social venues can be difficult, especially when I have more than two glasses of wine. That is when I make poor food choices.
Yes and no. At this point there are many food I simply don't eat so on one hand it is easier. However I still find that I have a hard time being conscious of what I am eating when there is conversation going on. I guess that is a result of living alone.

Yes! I feel awkward when everyone is ordering whatever they feel like and I go for a salad with dressing on the side. It's not so bad when it's planned eating out since I can look up calories ahead of time. I love the new menu sections that have 600 calories or less options. I know the calories depends on who makes it, but it's still a better choice. The worst is when you go somewhere that doesn't really have healthier options like my dad's favorite hibachi place. I try to eat less of the dish and have a healthy snack later. I just have to remind myself that it's a life long change and that I have to adapt.

When I'm invited to someone's home for dinner, I eat what they serve unless I have a severe allergy. IMO it would be rude not to. In a restaurant I can always find something healthy, even if I have to ask for sauce on the side, etc. Or if they have something I really love, can't make at home, and rarely eat, I might indulge that one time; this happened on my 3rd SP day, and after I made the decision to eat it, I enjoyed it guilt-free. I think that's because it was a decision, not a craving or caving. Parties and potlucks are another story! A vast smorgy of tasty treats is hard to resist, and it seems like most folks bring desserts! Of course I'll take something I can eat, but I also hope my new habits are firmly ingrained before I go to another one. I would be fine with taking one or two bites of a few sweets, but since starting SP I have not tested my ability to eat sugar; in the past it's always been one bite and I'm a gonner, so I'm reluctant. I used to skip parties and stay home to eat in secret (yeah, like my overeating is a secret ), but now I feel so much better that I want to go out. Guess I'll just have to deal with it somehow!
Yes evne the die hard weight watchers seem to want to order appetizers, entrees, AND dessert....for people in my life...they seem to equate get togethers and eating out as a free pass to eat. Not to mention the huge portion sizes. I try to limit my outings and be selective with whom I go out...but even when we split a salad and entrée...the food is still way more than I normally eat.
but you need to enjoy life as well...and dining out is part of it

no, we are going to have to face this as time goes on so I just skip some of the things I know I shouldn't eat like the bread and butter and go with whatever the leaner entree is. The meat course is usually fine, and of course the salad is great so just watch for the gooey side dishes and of course the dessert. Maybe only eat 1/2 of whatever they serve for those things.

Not so much because I am counting calories or trying to eat to lose (although that is true right now), but more because since I've started eating healthy for the long term, there are just so many foods in the common North American diet that, for health reasons, I just don't want to eat anymore. I've chosen to eliminate red meat and most white, processed foods and try not to eat much gluten. I guess this makes me a bit of an annoying guest when eating through the grace and generosity of another host and I struggle with this. You?
