I challenged all 180 of my students today to just turn off the water while brushing their teeth. Most had never thought about how much water is wasted that way. I also encouraged them to share the ideas with their families.

I'm also going to buy a reel mower. I've thought about it for over a year and now that my push mower has died, I'm taking the plunge!

I recycle the following items: paper, aluminum, cardboard, plastic containers (rinsed our), tin cans (rinsed out) and pop bottles. We don't have pickup at my apartment. I keep my stuff in my trunk, I drop off the recycleable items when I am near the drop off area.

Happy Earth Day.

used the water from my soaking slow cooker crock to water the herbs I planted over the weekend. Believe or not, that's technically illegal. I *know* this water had no harsh chemicals, only a small amount of dish detergent. With the droughts we've had for years, it's become a habit to be REALLY cautious with our water.

sis uses a large plastic tub to catch the condensation from her outside heating/air units. She dips her watering jug in the tub and uses that water for all of her container plants. Again, technically illegal. But if she doesn't catch the water, guess where it goes. Yep. Right into the ground. So what's the difference? Sis is just using that water where she needs it.

HAPPY emoticon DAY, EVERYBODY!

Very good, OBIESMOM2! emoticon emoticon I, too, reuse and recycle where I can. I've also been using my own cloth grocery bags for several years, and even keep some in the truck with me.

I recycle plastic bags, aluminum cans. I throw food scraps in the yard for the wildlife to eat.

I would recycle newspaper and food cans and glass if I didn't live in a rural area where there are no recycling centers within 20 miles of my house.

I've been using my own grocery bags for about 20 years now. Until maybe 3 or 4 years ago, it was a pretty rare thing around here. I got so many grumbles from the baggers (except for one - Tony) that I would go to the U-scan line (if Tony wasn't working).

we also recycle plastic, aluminum, glass, newspapers. I don't put food waste in the trash. At work, I throw it in the wooded area to the side of the building. At home, I throw it in the big pine island in our front yard.

I can't change the world, but I can try to improve my tiny little corner.

The first Earth Day celebration was in 1970 with approximately 20 million Americans participating. Now, Earth Day is celebrated by over a billion people in 180 nations around the world.

In the 1960s, issues dealing with the environment were not considered political concerns. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had attempted to gather support to focus on the environment, but none of his efforts had been successful. People's frustrations grew as environmental conditions worsened without gaining attention. With the help of activist Denis Hayes, Senator Nelson decided to organize an environmental protest to raise awareness. This protest, which took place on April 22, 1970, became known as the first Earth Day. Later that year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created, showing that environmental issues such as air and water quality had attracted political attention.

Since this first Earth Day, environmentalism has become a popular topic all over the world. "Approximately 80 percent of Americans describe themselves as environmentalists," according to Amy Cassara of the World Resources Institute. As our environmental knowledge has continued to grow since the first Earth Day, we have learned that the issues may not be as simple as dirty air. The Earth Day Network was founded by the original organizers of Earth Day. It is pushing Earth Day to move from single-day actions, such as cleanups and tree-plantings, to actions and commitments that could have an even bigger effect over the long term.

There are a lot of ways to participate in Earth Day. People are encouraged to join an Earth Day event in their area, or to make a pledge to lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. This could include buying green products such as energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) or creating a recycling plan for your home or business.
