A nutritionist would be the best start for you and especially because of your diabetes (me, too).
When I first started here's what I did:
1.) I cut out all fried anything
2.) I limited my bread intake to 2 slices per day
3.) I drank water, coffee and skim milk
4.) I walked 30 every day at a FAST pace (15 min in one straight direction then turned around)
5.) I ate more frequently but a LOT less
In 6 to 8 weeks my daily avg blood sugar count dropped (to low 100s rather than mid 200's).
I didn't start lifting weights until I had already lost 50% of my totaly weightloss but only because I wasn't smart enough to start lifting right away.
It is not okay for an alcoholic to get drunk once in a while.
So do not tell a food addict it is okay to eat like sh*t once in a while
