The problem with a shortcut is that, generally speaking, it doesn't help you get the habits that you need to maintain. Whereas the slow and steady weight loss, that requires you to work hard and daily make good choices, to pick yourself up and try again when you fail, teaches you to keep at it and instills the habits you're going to need once you reach that goal.
I can see the benefit of using a shortcut to bust a plateau OR if you have a special occasion (wedding or something) that you just really want to look extra good for, but I think as a general rule it's best to do it "the hard way," because it's better for you and is more likely to stick. :)
