I totally understand, I also received the "tight IT Band" diagnosis and found walking excruciating and would wake up every night, multiple times from the pain!
What saved me was the pool! I am able to simply tread water in the deep end (burns lots of calories) and in the shallow end, I do range-of-motion exercises that I could never balance my way through on dry land! I can stretch there too, which is very hard (painful) without the warm-up that the pool offers.
If you can find a warm pool, that is even better. The pool I use is about 90 degrees all year round, which makes it very therapeutic. When I'm done with my exercises, I head into the hot tub for some real relaxation. It's gotten me through a very long several months during which I couldn't do any other sort of exercise!
Good luck finding what you need, I can appreciate that it really is "challenging"!!
