Another great point - ALBERTJON. I remember standing in line with all my classmates getting the sugar cube in the early 1960s. And lets not forget the small pox vaccine. Most of us have the telltale scar on our left upper arm to show for that vaccine. Thank God we had those vaccines!

Thank God, that people who are against vaccinations, particularly people like Jenny McCarthy who has a national stage for her misguided and dangerous thoughts about not getting vaccinations, were not around in the 50's when polio was the scourge of the nation. If any of you or your parents were living in the late 40's through the 50's, you all would remember how dangerous, frightening, and encompassing the polio epidemic was. Guess what, today in America almost no one ever hears of polio, except for perhaps from other countries. Thank God for all of us who had the series of 3 shots and then the series of 3 oral vaccines.

DRAGONCHILDE: You really made me think with your comment. Of course, myself and all my siblings and everyone born in the 1950s had the chicken pox. My kids were going to get the Chicken Pox vaccine when it came out in 1995 but because my ex was military and the military didn't have the vaccine yet, we had to make an appointment with a civilian doctor. Because we had to wait a couple of weeks to get in, in that interim time period -- guess what? -- my kids both got the chicken pox. That was like in May of 1995. Interesting enough, my poor daughter got the shingles 4 years later when she was just about 10. I thought that was very weird since I had only heard that older people got it. I think part of the reason she may have gotten it was due to me going through a tough divorce and us moving to a new place (she got them right as we moved). Anyway, she is almost 24 now and has never had it again.

I think you may just be right - the increase in shingles is probably due to what you said --- All the kids getting vaccinated for the past 18 years.....I just had never thought about that before.

Husband had this & it was no picnic for him. But, he didn't feel a lot of pain, just heat. However, he was "highly contagious" and our 4 youngest ALL got chicken pox from his Shingles. What fun that was ! But, everyone is all better now. Hope you have a speedy recovery also.

My story with Shingles. I had a physical in my 50's when the doc recommended the shot. Not paid by my insurance it would be $200.00. I was getting on a plane that evening and was afraid I may have a reaction to the shot and I had a family reunion the next day and didn't want to be sick from the shot as I have a sensitive system. Plus I was told you usually don't get it till 60 plus.

Well later that year I got Shingles. Two months of burning misery. Took pills they gave me. After 3 months fine like before. Everyone over 40. I would recommend to get the shot if you had C.P.

MOUNTAINGIRL41: I think you bring up a good point concerning the "blame" that some people put on vaccines causing such and such. A good example of this is Jenny McCarthy who has been running a campaign to have parents not get their children vaccinated because she claims it causes autism. On one side is a former Playboy model spouting such things; on the other, are years of research, comprehensive studies, and a myriad number of doctors and medical scientists who have studied the data. Anyway, thanks for the well-wishes for my wife. She seems to be doing fine and thus far is only having minor irritation with the outbreak.

Best of luck you are done getting the shingles!

I have had shingles more than once -- the first time in my late 30's. I have known many older folks who came down with shingles despite the vaccine but their illness was much more mild so I think the vaccine is totally worth it.

In response to the person who blames the increased incidence of shingles on the chicken pox vaccine -- at least all of the kids who never ever get chicken pox will never get shingles. You cannot get shingles unless you have had chicken pox at some point in your life.

Hope your wife feels better soon!

I decided to post on this thread instead of starting a new one. A couple of years ago my wife and I (in our 60's) got our shingles vaccines. However, my wife noticed some "blisters"/rash and a bit of pain on her side, so went to the doctor this morning. Sure enough, she has shingles. I was surprised she got them, but the doctor told her that does happen. He suggested that she will probably have a milder attack because of having had the vaccine.

Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone else wanted to post about your experiences with shingles, if you got them after having the vaccine, if you plan to get the vaccine.

My wife does not regret getting the vaccination, by the way.

My DH has had the shingles TWICE in one year. In his late 50s...so miserable. He still has me check his back for those tell-tale spots. I had the vaccination. Figured it was worth the cost to protect myself from the pain and misery I saw him go through.

Actually, once upon a time you didn't have to worry about shingles until you were 60, but that's no longer the case. And you can thank the Chicken Pox vaccine for that.

You see, most of us got Chicken Pox as a child. IF you had kids, you got a sort of booster shot for your CP immunity when they got chicken pox. The reason you get shingles is your CP immunity basically wears down; older people are not exposed to small children who get chicken pox as much, so they lose their natural boosters.

But thanks to t he CP vaccine, we're not getting our natural boosters anymore. Neither of my kids has had CP, they got the vaccine, so I haven't gotten my natural CP booster!

Because of this, I'm at higher risk for shingles.

So because we decided to vaccinate against a relatively mild childhood disease for no real reason, we've unintentionally created a shingles epidemic.

Shingles is showing up in younger and younger people now. So the old idea that you didn't have to worry about it until you're old is no longer true.

I had to get my kids vaccinated for them to attend school, but I did not want to... and I may pay the price for that decision later... and so they may, too.

My brother-in-law and best friend both suffered with Shingles. It does tend to crop up when stress or other medical difficulty causes the body to have resistance down. I had the shot this fall before serious surgery just in case. Glad I did! Wish I could talk hubby into it. We are 62. Wishing those who are dealing with this well. I sure have seen how difficult living with it is.

$190 is worth the price for a vaccine that will keep you from developing shingles later in life...especially at a time when you are more physically vulnerable to such things. If $190 is too high a price to alleviate or prevent suffering of this type, what WOULD you want to pay?

My doctor said I had Shingles, but it was nothing (Thank God) like the horror stories I've read. I got a rash about the size of a half dollar in the bend of my right arm. It burned some and itched and wouldn't go away for weeks, but I only went to the doctor because I was wondering what it could be. Once you've had it, you're still not immune to it. If I ever get it again, I hope it's no worse than the first time.

I know that the vaccine is now approved for those age 50 and older but many insurers won't pay for it until age 60, which is too bad as it's an expensive vaccine AND shingles can really take a toll on people, no matter how previously strong and healthy. I intend to get the vaccine the day after I turn 60 as I've seen too much of the suffering first hand.

I know people a lot younger than sixty that have gotten shingles. And whenever they get stressed they have a mini outbreak.

I have been told that it feels like someone set a hot bag of coals on your skin

I hope that you feel better soon.

I would suggest that people get the shingles vaccine, as soon as their doctor will allow it. Adult-onset shingles isn't usually likely to occur until a person reaches approx. 60 years of age or older, and can be more severe in older folk, and more painful.

There's still a lot of people who think it only effects old people. There are also a lot of people who believe the older you are the worse you get it, but daughter was little and it was the worse! It looked like someone burnt her back, chest and the back of her neck! She still has the scars. She is now 19 yrs old and cannot be in the sun for long because her scars burn! Thank you for your thoughts

Sorry to hear about you mom. You cannot catch shingles, BUT if you've never had the chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine then you can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles. I am 40, but my daughter got them when she was about 10 yrs old. Some people get blisters right away, with no warning. Others get the tingling, itching pain first.

What are the first symptoms? How old are you? My mom has them and I'm so afraid I'm going to get them. I asked to be vacinated, but they won't until I reach 60. It might be too late by then. Think positive and I will be thinking of you and some prayers.

In 2011, after my father passed away, I got Bell's palsy on the left side of my face which can also happen if you dealt with chicken pox. Chicken pox is a form of herpes. (GROSSS!!! Non-std herpes, but herpes nonetheless.) I am pretty sure there is at least one form of anti-viral medication that can help speed up the healing process of shingles, as I was prescribed one for the palsy. It HURTS like an emm eff, I'm sure. Your doctor can tell you better than I can if there are any more natural remedies that can help speed up the healing process. Though I imagine since you're not eating meat, and lots of veggies and fruits, you're already better off.
Feel better, soon!

Its like getting the chicken pox. it effect only on side of your body. starts by getting sharp burning pain on back then it radiates to the front of you body. there' s numbing and itching as well. some people get it on upper back and front, some on legs and some on face. I got it on my back. my daughter got it when she was little and suffered so much! If you ever had the chicken pox then you have a chance of getting it.

I keep seeing ads for this.. What are the shingles? Symptoms?

So it looks like I'm getting shingles! So far I've only got the first symptoms. Not looking forward to the blister outbreak!
