I teach Comp I and I want to create a unit that revolves around a short essay about a girl who committed suicide because of bullying in MySpace. (It's a powerful essay and raises lots of different points.) I want my students to research a little bit and think outside of the box when they write their essays.

What do you think, do I give them a prompt to write about or have them search out a topic on their own? Do I have them write about bullying or the impact of social media? Should I have them extend this further and research how their major of choice could have impacted the situation?

Most of the students are parents, so I also thought about going from a parent point of view....

I am struggling with organizing my thoughts around this and I know this is a fitness website, but thought I'd just throw this out here and see if I can get some help. :)
