I spent years drinking lots of diet soda, probably 4 liters a day. I thought as long as it was diet, it wasn't bad for me.

Then I fell in the mud and had a spiral fracture, when I was in my early 30's. The doctors said if I ever wanted to walk again, I had to quit drinking Diet Coke because the phosphoric acid in it takes calcium from your bones. They said that my injury was something they usually see in motorcycle accidents, not in a slip and fall injury.

So I switched to diet Big Red which at the time did not have phosphoric acid in it. It took a couple of years of drinking too much diet Big Red to develop an allergy to red 40. I still didn't learn, I switched to diet ginger ale. Then we decided to eliminate aspartame from our diets and started drinking plain water.

I drink carbonated water or club soda sometimes. It tastes really bad if you're used to drinking a lot of sweet soda, but once you're used to it, it feels really refreshing on a hot day.

I totally got addicted to Diet soda, then I read about all the awful stuff artificial sweeteners do to your body and switched to soda that has real sugar (I'm also concerned about HFCS issues). I drink a couple Pepsi Throwbacks a day :( I'm seriously trying to quit so if you all have any advice for me - please comment on my SP blog, where I talk about my sugar addiction today. This post was really timely for me!

I was addicted to soda or as I like to say POP for years! i t was Pepsi and then when I became concerned with my weight I switched to Diet Pepsi. All I really care about was there being zero calories. BUT, one day my husband picked me up one (because I asked of course) and it had an off taste, it was gross. I gave it up from that moment on, it's been about 2 months and I've never felt better. My addiction was out of control, I had to have it everyday or I felt like I couldn't function, truth is I can function MUCH MUCH better without it and I'm healthier and spending less money! LIBERATION!!!!!!!!!!!

Diet soda should not be an option if you are concerned about aspartame. Google 92 side affects of aspartame. I had at least 15. Now I drink only water. I feel so much better and liberated. I was a soda junky. Never again!

Why is Diet Soda not an option? Are you convinced it is worse for you than soda with sugar?
I drink diet soda most every day but it is a choice. I like it and don't believe it is an "addiction" for me even though I've been drinking it for over 30 years. I'm not upset if I don't have any; I just drink water or coffee or some other sugar free beverage like the powdered mixes. I am probably somewhat addicted to caffeine or at least I truly miss it if I don't have my coffee in the morning and perhaps a little in the afternoon. I have naturally cut down on my coffee consumption over the years without even trying.

Hi Kelly,

I know exactly how you feel. I am seriously addicted to Pepsi. I won't drink any other soda; just Pepsi. I used to drink 6+ cans a day. I found it highly addictive. I tried to decrease my sodas to just one a day but I found even that kept triggering the addiction.

I went 1 full year without any Pepsi and I was over my Pepsi addiction. But I made the mistake of thinking of could have a can every now and then and be okay. I wasn't. My addiction to it got restarted and I'm having to start my withdrawal all over again...ugh!

Could you share some of your flavored water recipes with me to help me get over this Pepsi addiction? Thank you!!!

Well here's an update:

I have kicked the Dr Pepper habit. I don't crave it at all. Water Water Water. I do like to add lemon in my water occasionally.

Soda is just too sweet now. and It didn't take that long and my hubby hasn't complained about my mood at all. I don't think there was much of a mood swing when I switched to sodastream and eventually water full time. I feel great.

I cut sugar out of my coffee six years ago and when I did that, soda began to taste too sweet so I stopped drinking it altogether. I drink water and unsweetened tea.

I have a serious coke addiction that I am trying to kick so I feel your pain. Coke is my vice; in my hay day I was probably downing between 6-8 every single day. I had a Coke first thing in the morning, a Coke with each meal...basically if I was thirsty I was reaching for a Coke. I hate diet soda too so that was not an option for me. Coke Zero-blech!
Regular Coke = Heaven!!

Because of my addiction I gained over 60 pounds in one year that I am now trying desperately to lose.

Here's what has worked for me. I'm now down to drinking one coke a day. Not perfect but a huge improvement and I am losing weight quite steadily.

Always stay hydrated. I find that I get my worst cravings for Coke when I'm thirsty so I try not to let that happen. I have come up with a couple of recipes (flavored water type beverages) that are low in calories and seem to cure my cravings. Over time, I started to realize how dehydrated Coke was making me feel and felt so much better from switiching to water based beverages.

You have to make drinking water a habit. It feels really weird at first but you get used to it. Last night for the first tiime I actually craved water when I got thirsty instead of Coke. That was a major achievement for me.
For me personally I think I'm going to allow myself to drink one Coke everyday instead of giving it up completely. If I get a craving it's easier to overcome if I know I will allow myself to have one the next day rather than never again. I'm hoping that I get to the point where I just don't want it anymore but I'm going to let that happen naturally. I'll reaccess after a few months.

I know for me it was also easier to cut back slowly. For the first three days I allowed myself to have three a day, for the next five days it was two a day, and then after that it was down to one. Withdrawals were minimal as compared to the horrible migraines and lethargy I experienced when I tried to cut down cold turkey.

Giving up an addiction is difficult and requires a great deal of determination. Good Luck!

ArchimedesII -

Great answer! Took the words out of my mouth.

Soda/sugar addiction is very real and it causes a lot of issues including mood swings. It took a LONG time to wean myself off of it so that it is only an occasional treat but it totally kick started my weight loss.

As tough as it was, I kicked the habit my slowly making myself drink water or flavored waters instead and also eating as cleanly as possible as well as reducing my carb intake to get off of the blood sugar roller coaster.

I am a soda addict too. I don't drink coffee, so a 20oz Mt. Dew got me going every day. Diet soda was never an option for me either. Instant migraine.

I have cut down from 6 cans a day, to usually one every couple days. Usually when I was really dragging and needed to perk up.

Recently due to a change in blood pressure medication and my reaction to it, my doctor has told me I have to drink 1-2 cans of ginger ale each day to help boost my potassium levels, along with a supplement. It seems to be working so far. Hopefully my body will eventually adjust and I can cut back on the soda again.

I am Nike, and I can do it!

I loved Coke. But I knew I had to at least switch to diet because that was too many calories I was wasting everyday. So I got a large diet coke from Mcdonald's and forced myself to drink it. After that I could stand diet. Now I just have to quit that.

I used to be addicted to Dr. Pepper. It was my drink of choice and I drank a lot of it. Then trying to reduce calories I switched to diet Dr. Pepper and drank a lot of it. My daughter kept telling me how bad both were for me. Not only was I overweight but then I got the big C. Yes, cancer and that made me look at nutrition and what I was putting into my body in a whole new way. No more sodas for me. Water is my best friend. There is a great book "The Body's Many Cries for Water" that will really get your attention. Good luck to you in finding a healthy drink for your body.

Well it sounds like you have switched to a better alternative. It would be best if you cut it out completely. I too loved Pepsi, Cherry Coke, and Dr Pepper. I haven't drank soda in years. I did switch to like sparkling water, but that was years ago too. Now I just drink water and sometimes add a slice of lemon.

Water would be a healthier alternative. Dr Pepper 27 g sugars, that is more than an adult should have for a whole day. That alone would make me want to NOT drink it.

Good luck! I know it's hard, but once you get that crap out of your system you will find you don't even want it.

Cheers,

so here are the numbers:

Dr. Pepper ® calories 100 carbs 27g sugars 27g sodium 35mg caffeine 27mg

SodaStream Dr. Pete calories 37 carbs 9g sugars 9g sodium 2mg caffeine 22mg

so that's why I thought it was a good place to start since I hate diet.

I control the amount of syrup I add also.

What I find helpful when I want a soda treat is to dilute it with seltzer water, usually at about a 1:4 ratio of soda to seltzer (you can chose the ratio that works for you, maybe start at 1:1, and keep cutting back the amount of soda).

You get all the fizz, with a lighter flavor and less sugar, and no artificial sweeteners.

Everything about you resonates happiness, now I won't settle for less.
Give me all the peace and joy in your mind.

Lol. This could become a Dr Pepper appreciation topic. I love it and crave it.

Unfortunately I don't have the answer either but the soda stream sounds like a good idea. Maybe with some no added sugar diluting juice?

If you think you can, or if you think you can't, you're probably right. H Ford.

Can you cut back, instead of quitting cold turkey?

There are actually more than one thing to be addicted to with regular soda (and diet soda can be just as addicting) If you quit cold turkey not only are you going to have sugar withdrawal, but also caffeine withdrawal.

All the so called "secrets of success"will not work ... unless you do.

I was a Diet Coke addict for years. had a 2 liter bottle a day habit. Like you, went cold turkey many times and ended up going back on it. The withdrawal symptoms were pretty bad.

However, it's taken some time, but I am Diet Coke free. Haven't had a soda in years and I don't miss it. What did I do ? Instead of going cold turkey, I weened myself off. I started drinking more water as well as sparkling waters for my "fizzy" fix. So, I drank a little less each day. Have you ever tried Poland Springs or Adirondak ? There are many terrific carbonated flavored sparkling waters that you could drink instead of Dr Pepper. How many cans or bottles do you drink per day ? One can of Dr Pepper has 25grams of sugar. that's SIX teaspoons. That sugar would explain the mood swings. There have been many studies that have linked sugar to mood.

So, cutting out Dr Pepper would not only help reduce any mood swings you have, but it would help reduce your waistline too. These days, I drink regular water, mineral water, sparkling waters, tea, etc...

If I do drink a soda, I tend to go for organic sodas that don't have any artificial chemicals or preservatives. IZZY is a tasty brand you might want to swap in place of Dr Pepper.

I love Dr Pepper so much, it is my username.

I'm learning to switch to Soda Stream which is supposed to be lots less calories.

Diet soda is not an option.

I have quit cold turkey before but my DH thinks my mood swings require me to continue with my soda addiction. lol.

I don't disagree. So, I was wondering if you have this issue and what works for you?
