I would not be one bit surprised if the divorce of the parents had something to do with it. Adults can try and explain divorce to a child till the end of time and it would never erase the pain

Life has many doors that lead to SUCCESS that many people fail to open

Sadly, I think that there are a lot of heartless people out there. Most of them are probably pretty good at pretending they care while, at the same time, exploiting this tragedy to its fullest extent.

I believe that anyone with a heart is grieving right now because of what happened. I have changed my mind at least 5 times about whether or not guns should be outlawed. I have let my emotions run high because, frankly, I can't get this monster and what he did to these poor little children out of my mind. Let alone what these parents are going through. It's beyond words to describe. I can't even look on yahoo home page anymore without seeing their tiny little innocent faces. It is sickening. I can't take it anymore. I just can't.

It's bad enough that this tragedy occurred. What makes it even worse is the way it's being used. Basically, everyone who believes that they have anything that they can gain from this horrible tragedy is using it to its fullest.

The minute this happened, media people jumped on planes, in cars, etc. to race there to get interviews, make headlines, get more viewers, etc. I can only imagine how excited they were by the opportunities presented to them by this horrible event. They turned this tragedy into a circus, all to further their own ends. The American public has gone along and tuned in, mesmerized by the headlines.

The minute this happened, the politicians started using it to further their agendas. Once again, I can only imagine how excited they were by the opportunity that this presented them to further their own goals. One side started in about how it's because we have "shut God out of the classroom." The other side started in about how it happened because we need more controls on guns. The American public has gone along with them, with people parroting their political party's stance, repeating their political party's talking points, etc. The American public has allowed this tragedy to be used to further divide us along political lines. A fair amount of the American public is probably excited about the opportunities that this tragedy have presented for "their side."

It's sad and it's shameful. Yes, those poor people need to be left in peace. This will eventually happen...when everyone who thinks that they have something to gain from this horrible tragedy believes that they have used it to its fullest and have nothing left to gain from exploiting it further.

It's sad. So very, very sad.

My heart is breaking for these people, but the newscasters and psychologists and other doctors say they need to get back to normalcy. it was a start to get the kids back to school, but now I think it is high time for the news people to leave too and just update the nation when something is found. It is going to take weeks if not months and probably closer to a year to determine if they can the why. The why died when the shooter killed himself. He destroyed his computer harddrive so I don't see any help in that.

Let these people in peace to bury their babies and friends and family.

two wrongs don't make a right. People that are living with hate and condemning others because of what THEY believe in, clearly do not have the spirit of Jesus Christ living in them. Christians are supposed to pray for one another, not cut each other down. Now, having said that, I'm not perfect, and I have missed the mark in my spiritual journey with the Lord. I'm not perfect, just forgiven.

When I miss church, my friends don't say, "oh Amy, you know you should be at Church" and things like that. They say, "Amy, we missed you at church" This Westboro thing sounds like a cult.

Westboro is a cult...they have nothing to do with babtists, or any real religion. Just treat them as the wise high school students did when they came to Atlanta

this has happened several times, and always with the same result. The hateful people leave because they don't get the reaction they want.

DUBLINROSE - Americans are actually more religious than most of our peer nations including Europe and Austrailia. You would think we'd be less violent.

The young man who did this was mentally ill. His actions were incomprehensible. He died too. The NRA should do more than they currently do.

Tens of millions people in the USA legally own guns and none of them slaughtered people that day. emoticon emoticon

America is no less religious than many other countries, the UK, most of Europe, Australia etc. Yet they don't have the same level of gun crime, its not even close. God had nothing to do with this, the fact a sick person could get his hand on so many guns is the issue. This can't be allowed to happen again. People deserve better.

I know, politics and religion are very deep subjects that could turn into a lot of arguments. The same could be said about the gun control issue. It was horrible, the whole world is grieving right now, so the last thing we need is to argue. Sorry.

This had nothing to do with prayer not being allowed in public schools, the pledge of allegiance having the word God in it or any other religious issue. The madman who killed those kids would have done so whether or not he prayed in school, whether or not those kids prayed in school that morning and whether or not the word God was said in the pledge of allegiance. It would have happened whether or not the Ten Commandments were posted. For all we know, the killer's mother could have taken him to church every Sunday while he was growing up. So, please, let's not turn this into something that it is not.

What it is, in my opinion, is a monster of a person (possibly with mental issues) who decided to perform a copycat multiple murder (this time at an elementary school) like he saw covered by the media at some point in the past.

We said the pledge of allegiance as written (which by the way, did not include "God" until 1954) at my public schools. I also grew up in a very Christian home. But, I do not agree w/ things like forcing children to pray, or to learn the Ten Commandments. That is what church is for, not school. School is there to teach a wide variety of subjects, church is there to teach specific religious topics.

sadly, in Georgia, none of the schools I attended had prayers or the Ten Commandments. We did, however, have God in the Pledge. Of course it's different with Private Christian Schools, but who can afford them? I can't.

The public schools here in my area say the pledge which has "God" in it, has the Ten Commandments posted in the memorial yards and we have once a week Bible Study, I don't know of any public school that rejects the Word of our Lord.

This event needs to be prevented from happening again, that's for sure.

My heart is hurting so bad for these parents. I can't even begin to imagine what they must be going through. I just want everyone here to know that I may not know you personally, but I love you all. God Bless you, Amy

I heard an interesting phrase used on the news this weekend: "We live in a culture of violence." I believe that is true. Our children have very few examples of what to do with conflict other than be violent.

Like everyone else I am heartbroken that 27 people had to lose their lives at the hand of this monster. I am not sure that we will ever know why unless somewhere he left some kind of note or other form of motive. I don't know if he had autism, i have never heard of anyone with any form of autism become violent, but i do believe he was not right in the head and something must have broken in him to go directly to an elementary school with beautiful little angels in there.
My heart goes out to the parents. I can't have children of my own, but I do understand loss. I lost my mother at a very young age unexpectedly (14). Not that losing a Mom to natural causes is in anyway like losing children, siblings, spouses, and friends to a madmen, but I do understand loss. The thing about Loss is that you never get over it. It is always there in your heart, around holidays, in the room like a big elephant. You will never see these kids grow up, graduate, get married and have babies. it totally sickens me.
The road for these families is going to be long and painful. My prayers are that they get through the coming holiday with at least one smile.

my heart goes out to the town.

My heart goes out to our nation.

i proudly wear the colors of Green and white today as I honor the victims in this small town.

May God be with them all in whatever way they need.
I've heard many times the question of where was God-- Why wasn't He there. He was. God was there. he was in hearts of the principal and school psychologist as they tried to stop the shooter. He was in the hearts of the teachers as they hid the children or kept them calm. he was in the hearts of the first responders. Yes, it is sad he couldn't save the 27 that died, but He did save over 500 others.

Healing will begin. I just know that it will be a long arduous road.

:)

I am saddened to know there was another irresponsible gun owner. The mom may she rest in peace and did not deserve to die had made the awful mistake of having guns accessible to her son that clearly had mental problems. I know people don't think their loved ones could do such a thing but we as people need to better handle our guns or we are gonna lose our right to bear arms. With mentally disturbed people in home guns have no place. A solid heavy duty safe MAY do the trick but some wood and glass gun case won't stop the angered and disturbed. I have no clue how he got a hold of her guns but he did and that is a big fail on the mom.

What beautiful children all of these kids were and their lives cut so short by a stranger. I struggle with access to guns. Now we don't own a gun, but we do have a safe that in order to get into it you need a key and a combination. I am thinking if you own guns you really need to be a responsible gun owner. Now we don't know how he gained access to his mother's guns, but if they were under some kind of lock and key with a combination he may never been able to get to them.

Also, I read that his mother had the guns for her protection from her son. Not sure how true that is, but he sounds like an individual that really had issues and was he being treated for them? Also, if the mother felt he was such a threat maybe he really needed to institutionalized. Just saying!

It is such a tragic loss to beautiful lives that shouldn't have never happened. It is just another reminder to me how precious each day is that we have on this earth.

Cheers,

For so many years there was much emphasis about kids self-esteem for basically doing nothing... giving out prizes just for participating / breathing, and no-losers-or-winners sports, rather than doing good and achieving goals. What did this teach children? Sadly, so many have a sense of entitlement that just doesn't cut it in the real world.
They grow into disappointed adults when they see that the boss doesn't give you a prize just for showing up; you've got to produce & do it well to keep your job (if you're lucky & the economy doesn't suck), let alone advance.

I think part of the consequence of the above shows in today's "look-at-me" world of social media. It seems like so many are desperate for any attention. Sadly, acts so despicable as this pretty much guarantee that attention. And I agree that the lessening of God in society seems to have increased that need to 'matter.' Generally, people centered on God already know they (and everyone else) matter! This is a generality - obviously, nut jobs can lurk just about anywhere.

While the above may not have had so much direct affect on this particular perpetrator (he had known mental issues from an early age), it's certainly something to think about.

I pray the victims & loved ones can feel God's presence and His love to help guide them though these dark days.

All of us are truely saddened by this tragic event, the question now is thia; can anything be done that would be effective in curbing this from happening again?

These are some of my own ideas and certainly are NOT the answers that'll prevail but these are just my opinions:
~The shooter's name should never be released, ever.
~Surviving victims need to be "off limits" to the media.
~Mental health awareness ought to be made more available for all. I have heard and read that the "obvious" suspects are usually never the ones who do this; it's the quiet and introverted ones that appear normal.
~The Second Amendment should NEVER be a topic of discussion in these matters (btw, I do not own a gun but would fight tooth & nail to keep the amendment intact)
~The NRA ought to be more support of the idea of being even MORE discriminant of who can obtain a gun. The NRA does support the guns laws currently in place but could totally do more in the way of supportting stalizing gun control.

I have seen so much mis-information on FaceBook the last two days it's disgusting to me. I saw a posting of someone who blames Liberals (directly) for this shooting because President Obama won the election, I saw another that said since Liberals are Godless that that's why this happened in a school, yet another post I saw said that he knows that the Feds will be going door to door in the next few weeks disarming rural citizens of their hunting guns.

I agree with this notion; Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people. That said if that killer wouldn't have had a gun in his possession then he may not have killed as many. Also, if he was mentally disturbed why wasn't he being taken care of?

Let's addess the media's participation first (it's the easist to take care of right away), then start addressing mental health issues then after that if there's a need to talk about gun laws then let's do that, too.

I don't have the answers but I am as frustrated as many of you as to why can't something be done to prevent this from happening again, all those little children.....God, it's breaking my heart.

Prayers to all those affected, and I want to add this quote:

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world." - Mr. Fred Rogers

I so agree with the name thing. Give them monsters random names so their name never gets put of there. Don't show faces either. Their name gets everywhere from news, to history books, and some in movies. They are sick people who just stick to themselves too long then get angry and lonely then they don't want to die without some recognition. Sicko! I don't think they are sick enough to know right from wrong, I think they are just sick enough to think that sounds good. They want to take out kids because they know that devastates us the most to see innocent little life's taken. They are selfish, and they waller in their own thoughts in which they program themselves to be monsters but still have control but chose to not use control. They are ones who decline friends, family, everyone, all love, then they get angry, they give up, and they end up doing the unthinkable. They have nothing to lose because the life they chose eventually makes makes them angry and now they must make others angry to be remembered. I don't feel sorry for these people but I do feel for then because they did not know that at first being by themselves is okay then it takes it's toll. Other people did not cast them aside, they removed themselves ,and no human will remian human without others human love, interaction etc. They still can have some family they communicate with, like for him maybe his mother and brother, but it is usually in their favor they want something from them like money or food then back to their dungeon in self loathe where they play those same thoughts in their head over and over and over, like a scratched record that can't get to the next verse and a weak lazy person who does not want to change the record because they become dependant on their bad thoughts and it will take energy to change them. BAD THINGS LURK IN THE DARK!

Having children and grandchildren, I can't even comprehend the magnitude of this horrific tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the Newtown, Connecticut victims, children, families, staff and community of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

In this case, banning assault weapons wouldn't have helped. He shot everyone with two handguns. He had an assault rifle though, but it was in the trunk of the car, unused.

It's just all so sad. A friend of mine's little cousin was one of the victims. I also really feel bad for the shooters older brother since the media originally called him the shooter. He hadn't even talked to his brother in 2 years.

I think another thing that would help is if the media didn't turn these shooters into celebrities. They shouldn't even report their names, post their pictures, nothing. Most of these shooters have similar profiles.... usually really smart but reclusive. They see the news when other shootings happen and they're like "wow, everyone knows who that guy is, I want them to know who I am". If the media quit turning these guys into well-known people, I think that would help a lot.

My heart goes out to the families. Here in Portland Oregon there was a shooting in the Clackamas Town Center Mall. Many shots fired with 2 dead. Such tragedies so close together.

I have two children in elementary ages 6 and 11, I can't even begin to try and comprehend the tremendous pain the parents and grandparents and siblings feel right now.
I can't watch the news my heart breaks for them all!!! They were our children too, and why is the media interviewing the children?
I guess its not for me to understand, but to pray for all those who have lost their lives and the those of the families that their lives will be forever changed!! emoticon emoticon

We, in Canada, have very strict gun rules in Canada....only hunting weapons, no personal firearms unless you are in the enforcement area yet we still have random shootings here and there which goes to show that whether or not you have gun control, people who want to do harm to others with guns will find a way to get guns. Yes it is a viscious circle for the US -- is it the gun owners or the guns themselves. My opinion, and this is only my opinion, is that the rules need to be much tighter on how potential gun owners are vetted. The crux of the problem is how to accomplish that without violating the persons constitutional rights.....Any thoughts? Opinions?

Horrible tragedy which has devestated the lives of those families which they will never heal from.....my prayers go out to them

So sad, I can't imagine what the parents of those kids must be going through.

Do any of the Americans here think this will mean stricter gun control now? Living in a country where guns are banned its hard to imagine a situation where guns are so easy to get or why anyone would want to keep them in the first place.

RIP all the victims

Was he mental? It was not the gun but the person who wanted to hurt people. Why kill more than just his mother? Just wanting to kill her is horrid on its own.

I couldn't even imagine being one of the parents of the children killed. How it must have felt to be told that your 4 or 5 year old would not be home tonight. The pain these parents are feeling.

I don't blame the NRA or gun control. You don't hold it against the car when a drunk driver kills someone, why blame it on the gun.

What these families need right now is prayers and love and understanding. Kudos to the teacher who pulled the 8 year old into her classroom.

Oye I had a big long response typed up about this then the internet crapped out on me. The shooter was the son of a kindergarten teacher, and most of the casualties were in her classroom, and they are holding his younger brother in custody.

Anyway, the gist of this is, most of these shooters are mentally ill. I read something the other day about how psychopath evil people like serial killers are usually males in their late 30s-40s, and they spend a lot of time time planning what they're going to do, and do not feel remorse at all for what they've done. But these mass shooters are usually males in their early-mid 20s and suffer from mental issues (ie if they had proper treatment they would be productive members of society), and the attacks are usually somewhat "spur of the moment"... they basically just SNAP. They might plan it for a week or two but overall it's not really pre-meditated. That's also why they often shoot themselves after they do it... almost like they didn't really realize they would actually do it and all of a sudden feel remorse for it.

There is still a huge stigma against people who need mental treatment. I know for a time I was taking Zoloft, and I was ashamed to tell anybody about it. Insurance companies often do not cover the treatment people need, not to mention people who have no insurance. My brother suffers from OCD and severe depression, and while he was out of work with no insurance, he could not get treatment for it as he couldn't afford it. This made it much harder for him to get a job. It's a vicious cycle.

This article, while old, is great at explaining how policy changes in the 70s and 80s caused a lot of mentally ill people to be released and out walking amongst us www.nytimes.com/1984/10/30/science/how-rel
ease-of-mental-patients-began.html?pag
ewanted=all
Not that it's an excuse whatsoever, but the system has failed these people and in turn has failed EVERYONE since the victims are innocent.

first of all, I don't care who gets offended by this, but this is what happens when we take God out of everything. I don't care if you think I'm making a religious thing out of this, so go ahead and post your comments. Satan is having a field day right now. I am so saddened and I pray for all of the parents of the kids whose lives were lost. The children are with God now.

Horrible doesn't even begin to describe such a tragedy. I read one report that said that one of the shooters was the 24 year old son of one of the teachers. Also read a report they had a person of interest in custody. they're saying there were two shooters. one committed suicide.

Last week, I read an article that said a man in China injured 22 students with a knife. Last year, Anders Breivik killed 73 teenagers in Norway. During the summer, James Holmes, murdered 12 and injured 58 others just because they went to a midnight showing of Batman.

Who does these things ?

What I don't get is...what the HELLLLL would prompt someone to open fire on CHILDREN? Those kids were MY kids' ages! WHY???? I hope the perpetrators names are NEVER revealed so that they do not have their names recognized. Infamy is still a form of fame, and the gunmen do not deserve that.
