As has been said, it's only a failure if you give up completely. Fluctuating up & down is normal. I don't think there is one among us who can say their weight stays exactly the same from week to week. Just keep trying...that's the best any of us can do!

If I didn't get my butt in gear this week believe me it would have stayed. If you want a symptom or name for it I will call it "Lazyitis". I over ate and sat too much point blank.

ANARIE - I couldnt have said it better myself, great answer!

sudden weight fluctuations are really nothing to be concerned about as they feather back down in a week or so. the kind of weight that really needs to be watched is the kind that goes up very slowly and stays.

UPDATE-I weighed today and I am one happy person. When I first posted this thread I said I put on five pounds, but looking at my chart it was 5.2 to be exact, so I went over what I actually lost by 2 ounces. I weighed this morning, and after watching myself since this post on what I eat, how much I sit ,and what added exercise I incorporate I have taken 4.2 pounds of it off already. I am happy to be back on track and to have faced my failure. :)

I lost 53 pounds at WW 2001-2003 then got off track.

Gained all but the last 20 pounds back, even after starting Curves in 2004.

I was all set when I joined Spark People in 2010. I set my starting weight at 218. I gained 3 pounds that first week. They would not let me put it in because the number is SUPPOSED to go down. I had to reset my starting weight.

Then at the end of last year, I DID IT! I was below the critical number AND WAS NO LONGER OBESE! That next week, I was obese again.

My point? I was HORRIFIED at each of these events. There were others, but these were the biggies.

I now realize this my journey. It all happens for a reason. These are just bumps in the road. They are not all the asphalt.

Life is not waiting for the storms to pass..it's learning to dance in the rain.

We've all done it.. I lost 120 pounds 10 years ago and gained back most of it by careless eating and stressfulness (I know that's not a real word, but it fits). I'm back down 73 pounds and this time it feels like it will take... I started to go astray and then caught myself, with the help of sparkpeople..

So hang in there.. take little steps, form new habits.. it takes a while!

Good luck! emoticon

We are fighting a food addiction eating disorder. It can't be dismissed by dieting down to a certain weight, and than you are "cured", it's always there. I've been losing and gaining since age 12, I'm almost 66 now, and still "working" at it, the daily exercise at least keeps it at bay. That is just the way it is, don't be swayed by fancy magazines with celebs plastered all over, telling you it's easy, just do Yoga or breathe deeply or something. There is alot more to it than those things. Keep plugging away at it, lifelong. It's normal.

Like many others here, I have had my "gaining" times as well as my "losing" time. 6 years ago, I lost 40 pounds ... then regained a little over 30 pounds when I had some health problems and "fell off the wagon." Once I had re-gained about 15 pounds due to the health problems, it just seemed to get worse.

Last year, I lost 15 pounds in the first half of the year ... and gained it all back in the 2nd half of the year, in part because of my recurrent problems with my thyroid gland -- but also because I got discouraged and off track.

This year, I have lost 24 pounds so far -- and am back at 40 pounds lost overall since my highest weight. So I know how it feels to have to backtrack on the "pounds lost" icons. It's depressing.

But you CAN get back on track and learn from each experience. Just don't keep making the same mistakes over and over again ... and you will eventually make lasting progress.

Good luck!

I'm struggling right now..but I'm not going to quit trying. If my car ran off the side of the road..I wouldn't leave it there.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

Anarie is correct. If you are experiencing your period you can easily retain water. One month I gained ten pounds, but it was gone the next week

Definitely don't give up. If you "fell off track" as they say, then maybe you could rearrange your new lifestyle so that you don't feel the need to fall off track. I believe if people feel the urge to fall back into old habits, then their new lifestyle may not be as manageable as they think! Try to find a lifestyle where you can enjoy the foods you love, not go to extremes, and never feel deprived.

I lost it in August. Too much excitement with my daughter getting married and such that I over indulged. My new goal is 10 lbs off before Christmas. I don't mind calling it a fail because when there is a fail there is only one way to correct that and that is to go up and do good. A fail is a fail no matter if I gained the 5 lbs back or more.

How did the "re-gain" happen, and how long has it been? Make sure you're not labeling a normal fluctuation as a "failure."

I'm assuming you're female. If you're a guy, you might not want to read the rest of this.

If your weight goes up suddenly, the first thing to do is check your calendar. How does your weight today compare to your weight 28 days ago? It is not AT ALL uncommon for a woman's weight to jump several pounds (often as much as 7 and for some women even up to 10) at a certain point in the hormonal cycle. It's not necessarily right before your period; for some of us it's the week after or the middle of the month. It's water, not fat, and it's a good idea to look at weight in four, eight, and twelve week intervals so you can learn your own pattern. Fluctuations are normal, and knowing when to expect them can save you from a lot of emotional fluctuations as well.

Guys get fluctuations, too, but not in a specific pattern. Before you panic about a weight gain, think about things like changes in the weather, whether you've eaten things that are high in sodium, whether you're coming down with a cold or allergies, etc. All of those things can cause water retention, which shows up on the scale as weight but is actually just a temporary, meaningless bump.

As everyone else has said, it is not a failure unless you give up completely.

I only needed to lose 30 pounds, but I have lost and gained back an entire person I am sure.

Hang in there. You can do this!

I agree, its not a failure unless you give up and stop where you are. You lost it once, you can lose it again. Keep that picture and look at it daily and set a time when you want to be there. Then use it to motivate yourself. You can do it, and you deserve it.

I had to remove the 5 lb. success photo. I gained it back. I am not going to give up, I am going to try harder. This is tough to admit to, but the first step to success is admitting failures, or so I think it works that way at least. Feel free to list your goofs.
