Well I DID get to 300 pounds without being a binger or having food addictions of any kind. I had a brain aneurysm followed by pituitary failure. I also have several other metabolic issues. I was too sick to exercise for quite a long time. Once I was able to get a diagnosis and start daily injections, I was able to get out of bed again and start to rebuild the muscle mass that I had lost. Before I started dieting, I was eating too many carbs and not enough vegetables or protein. Sometimes my serving sizes were a bit too large. I would very occasionally eat fast food, but always the healthier options, and I did not eat junk food. I was never, ever eating in outlandish ways. Most normal, heathy people eat more than I was eating at my heaviest weight. I think that I am fairly moderate now. I eat enough every day that I am not deprived or hungry at all. I restrict carbs, but also work in cheat days for social events and such. I exercise 8-10 hours a week, but I do it because I like it and it makes me feel good as much as for the weight loss benefits.

yes. I try not to burn myself out because this is a lifetime thing. I've been building my home equipment and actually enjoying using it. spin bike, treadmill and exercise dvd's. I want to add an elliptical and I think that will be it. I also have the home version of body pump.

EEJAYBEE 20 hours? I'm shooting for five AT THE MOST. More like two and half/three. It works just as well this way. Maybe better because there's less of a tendency to give up. I started with a half hour. I'm up to about two without crashing. Not organized sports either, mind you. I hate organized sports unless dance classes count. Find something you love. Don't let it overwhelm you. I think you may have found the thread for you. There is also a community: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_individ ual.asp?gid=58372

I'm a bit of an all-or-nothing perfectionist, so I'm trying really hard to be moderate with dieting this time round, in the hope that it will stick long term. So now, if I go out for a meal, I don't deny myself, but neither do I automatically have stuff that's high in fat! I'm trying to find a middle ground- and not feel guilty! Exercise- I've been doing more (as a life-long sport-hater) and definitely starting to enjoy it more. But I must admit, whenever people post saying how many hours and hours of exercise they've done each week, it really puts me off. I guess it's because I'm not that sporty, and I want to balance exercise with doing other things in life, too. As soon as I start thinking that a healthy lifestyle means doing 20 hours of sport a week, it makes me want to chuck the whole thing in...
I'm tired of starting over- so I'm going to quit giving up!

I eat within my calorie range and try to avoid empty calories. I do allow myself a treat once in a while such as a Snickers bar but I adjust for it.

Another moderate here. I pretty much eat what I want when I want it. I exercise enough to burn it off. The BIG KEY for me is, WHAT I want has changed to more healthy foods and I make better decisions about my food. I am much happier living with this flexibility.

I'm moderate in the sense that friends and family come first, so I'll miss a work out, or eat an un-counted calorie meal to spend time with them, or if they need me.

It depends. I am always moderate with very very good quality dark chocolate - Swiss or other. Eat one piece a day and that is enough for me because it is so luscious. But average chocolate - I can eat a bar mindlessly. On exercise, definitely moderate. Never manage more than 15 minutes on the treadmill as get so bored (and usually about 7 is my limit). Do less of the aerobic type stuff as step etc also bores me - but I can walk in a beautiful place for hours, do yoga and other exercise (some pilates classes) easily and enjoy Zumba once I get to it.

Can't say that I'm a moderate (except in politics, but I'm NOT going to go there!), because when I like something, I just run with it, but I definitely admire people that can do things in moderation, because I'd love to be able to have that ability. Unfortunately, I have two speeds: Stop and Go. However, I will say that I'm grateful that SparkPeople has the ability to work with folks that are like me and folks like you guys that are moderates. I reached my first weightloss goal of 12 lbs through diet alone. I eat what I want, I just track and make it all fit in. Once a month or so, I will cave and go way over my calorie range for a few days. It just kind of happens, but I live with it and get back on track. I'd like to lose another 5 lbs, and am incorporating exercise into my routine a few days a week. I used to be a runner but now work two part time jobs and have three kids with busy schedules. As long as I am fueling my body with good food most of the time, excercise is gravy. I don't use cardio as an excuse to indulge in extra calories. It's just nice to know that it is helping to speed up the weightloss process. My blood pressure and cholesterol have always been normal, but I can't deny that when I do excercise I feel stronger, firmer, and have more energy. That's how moderation works for me. I am not setting myself up for guilt later on.

I would say I'm a moderate. I went overboard in my working out last summer and burned out FAST!! This time around I'm taking it slower and not trying to get in an hour or longer every day. If I do workout that long, it is broken up and different things. I started the 28-day bootcamp challenge, and this is my 2nd week (day 1). I wanted more cardio then just the 10 minutes since I didn't do a walk like I planned on last night, so I did the day 1 cardio 10 minute workout twice. In week 2 you are supposed to do 2 bonus videos for the week, and I wanted to do one today since it was a lighter day. I had some stuff I needed to do around the house, so I used that as my cool down from cardio and then did the 14 minute yoga video. Now later while I'm working (I work nights at home) I will probably take a walk around my block or just march in place and stretch during my breaks. I'll get in close to an hour by the end of the day, but it doesn't seem to monopolize your day if it is broken up into smaller segments. For eating, I'm moderate as well. As others have said, I eat the same things I did before but less in quantity, and some recipes I have lightened up. One thing I don't eat very often anymore is those boxed sides (pasta roni and rice roni). I use brown rice and make my own mushroom rice for much better overall nutrition than the package. I still do the pasta ones once in a while but eat much less of them and still make the mushroom rice for my daughter as she won't eat mine since it has chunks of mushrooms and she doesn't like brown rice. The biggest change I have made is cutting out whole eggs. I may eat them once or twice a week but I stick with the liquid whites. I think I'm going to try the egg beaters when I go to the grocery store tomorrow and see how they compare nutrition wise since I've really missed my mushroom omelets. I have also started eating a salad every day either before or with our main meal in the evening (actually my lunch since I get up at noon)

I appreciated this thread as I identify with the "moderate" crowd. More power to those folks who are strict adherents to what's working for them (low carb, low fat, high protein, 8 million fitness minutes (grin)), but I discovered that being overly restrictive has just led to yo-yo weight gain/loss for me. Everything I do and eat gets put into a tracker, and I look at the numbers in context of how it looks in a given week not just being "good" or "bad" on a particular day. When I'm planning my meals I include meals out, snacks, and happy hour ;-) For the fitness side of the house, I have a goal for each week - some weeks I've met the goal by Wednesday, other weeks it may be a very busy Saturday. It works though that I've committed to myself to meet my goals on a weekly basis. One side effect is that I now really notice when I'm blowing past a number for the day, and often I'll just throttle back on the eating. In the past I might have noticed but then would have figured, "what the heck, might as well eat the rest of the cheesecake 'cause I've already blown in for the day. Looking at in the context of the week helps me to think, "if I still want to do happy hour on Friday, I'd better put the rest of the cheesecake away." My weight loss is only 1/2 to 1 pound a week, but the lifestyle is sustainable - and I'm not nearly so crabby with my husband (nothing like feeling deprived to make you growl and people who can lose weight by sneezing!).

I guess Ive always been a moderate; I joined SparkPeople to develop a healthier lifestyle, not specifically to lose weight. So Im very happy to find you all here. LIPTAK Youre so right about us moderates dropping in only every once in a while. Were here whether you can see us or not. :) Like WHITLA011 & TIG123GER, I allow myself the foods I love a bit at a time. For instance, I use the time it takes to eat just 2 squares of dark chocolate at lunch everyday to remind myself of the people in my life that I love or just feel how fortunate I am to live in a beautiful, safe place. Ill always have to measure out potato chips into a small bowl to avoid eating the whole bag but, hey, that just keeps me mindful of how important my health is to me. As someone once said (and SENIORSWIMMER just said again) Everything in moderation, including moderation. Some days I give myself permission to just sit around and sometimes, when celebrating with friends, I eat a lot of less healthy food. But my key is to know going into the situation that this is not my normal behaviour, that tomorrow Ill be eating healthier foods, like whole grains, veggies and lower fat proteins, and doing all the activities that keep my body and my mind strong and flexible.

I have just come to the conclusion that it works for me to have a small (100cals) sweet treat most days rather than save up for the weekend. My eating was awful last week because I tried to be too strict! As for exercise, I don't think 'll ever be a moderate there, I just love my martial arts and running and anything else I can fit the time in for! Maybe I'm moderate on my moderation and that;s why it only applies to food for me!

Obsessive compulsive disorders are common amongst people dealing with stress by over eating, over exercising, or under eating and whatever else it is that satisfies them to get rid of the anxiety in life. Moderation is not at all easy to achieve, but we seem to be working on it at this web site.

I have learned that I am an under-eater and over-the-top on working out. I'm working hard to build my intake up in the right ways, but find it challenging. This is mostly because I simply can't eat anymore. As for my workout, I have a six day a week cutting/toning routing I follow, plus cardio 5 days a week. I love working out. I feel better. It gives me time to think and focus. I like being challenged and frequently compete with myself to outdo that last set or run just a bit farther. The consequence is, I burn way too much, can't eat enough, and am in great shape but stuck 13 lbs away from my weight loss goal. That being said, my measurements do show results so I stick with that.

I try my hardest to be moderate. I'm also a big time foodie, which is partially why I got so heavy before I took off the weight, and I do my best to incorporate the full-flavor foods I love into my regular meal plan. Although my breakfasts tend to be the same most days--oatmeal, egg whites, fruit and nuts--I aim for variety and fun in my other meals. I love Indian, Latino, Thai and other ethnic food and either try to lighten up my favorites or go for the regular stuff in moderate portions. My trade off for this is that I have to weigh, measure and track. I supplement my richer foods with lots of fruit and vegetables to bulk up my meals and fill in the missing nutritional gaps. I also treat myself to a weekly splurge meal, which is usually something I cook myself. This gives me the opportunity to have whatever delicious meal I'm craving without worrying about lightening it up or the weighing, measuring and tracking. I have, at times, been less than moderate in the exercise department but that's something I'm continuing to work on. I'm trying to scale back my intense gym workout schedule in favor of one that consists of more natural exercise like walking. I still hit the gym, but it's more like three or four days a week instead of five or six. Just having two days back to focus on other things has made me feel more moderate and the sky hasn't fallen. I'm still at goal and feeling great!

I am able to things in moderation 99% of the time. However, there are certain triggers that are extemely hard for me to resist. Homemade buttercream frosting is one of those items. I literally have to move as far away from it as physically possible in a public situation to avoid the temptation. I don't even allow it in my house so I don't have to deal with it in private. I am not sure why it has such power over me, but it is a guaranteed binge if I let myself get too close to it. I know it sounds silly, but it is what it is...my nemesis.

I like moderation, but sometimes that just does not fit. I can say, "I'll have one sugar cookie" and stick to it, but don't even place a plate of double chocolate chip cookies in front of me. I don't know about any of you, but I'm turned away by clothes that state "one size fits all." They make me feel so unimportant. Silly, I know, but I love clothes that are close to my size then, if need be, custom tailored to fit--just me. So, why not an eating plan that does the same? I have never looked at it like this before, but after reading these posts, I now see my eating and exercise plan the same way. I want something that might fit someone else but really made to fit me. I like myself enough to get clothes that fit me the way I want them to, I have to also like myself enough to have my eating and exercise plan fit me the way I want them to.

I consider myself a moderate....now. I had an appetite that was insatiable. Fortunately, when I was younger, I also had the metabolism of a hummingbird. I enjoyed swimming and running. I rode my bike to work. The consequences of my horrible eating weren't as bad as they could have been. I am still in the process of finding my own nutrition/exercise path. I know the extreme activity of my younger years (I am talking about as late as my 40's.) won't work anymore. I HAVE to rein in my appetite. I am surprised that I am enjoying this experience, and that is largely due to Spark People. It's a wonderful, supportive community at my fingertips. There is no food I will deny myself, except chips. I cannot stay in control with chips. I can eat a family size bag all by myself. I don't want to do that scene anymore. I swim for 30 minutes 3 times a week. I walk 50 minutes twice a week. I have not started strength training yet. I think that's pretty moderate. It sure is moderate compared to how I used to eat.

I try for moderation, but it's hard when people keep bringing in junk food to work. I find it's easier to just not start eating that than eat a moderate amount. I'm probably better off that way.

I always thought it would be nice to do things in moderation, but unfortunately I eat like a "pig". I guess technically I'm not over weight but if I could tone it down maybe my body would look more like I exercise daily. I eat so much I cancel out all of the calories i burn. If I didnt run I'd probably be as big as a house!

I, too, was an "all-or-nothing" kind of girl...either I was being "good" and sticking rigorously to my diet or I was "bad" and all food in sight was fair game. My current weight loss journey is different this time. I'm much less apt to freak out when I'm faced with a less-than-ideal menu and making better choices when they're available. I work out 30-45 minutes a day, five or six days a week. It can be challenging because I work long hours and travel extensively for my job, but I've discovered that restaurants are making a better effort at making healthier choices available. All you have to do is make them...

I'm trying to get back to being moderate! I still have a hard time with feeling guilty when I eat something "unhealthy" (or even feeling guilty when I'm not hungry), yet I'm still likely to eat 10 cookies in a sitting! I'm trying to eliminate both behaviors :) I also feel guilty when I read posts from people who have given up all sugar, flour, etc... but I KNOW that isn't moderate behavior for me! Like many people here have already said, you have to do what works for YOU.

I have a few hard and fast fitness rules: daily exercise, loads of water, 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables, and 2-3 servings of sweet treats per week. (Love that ice cream!) I have been doing this for about 35 years. Around that, the exercise can be from a very long list of activities which I'll not write now. I can eat any kind of food I want any week, but I can't have my favorites every day. There are only a small fraction of foods I totally avoid (chips!), and I can eat anywhere anytime of day or night I want. I have kept my weight near where I want it for 40 years. (Now age 55) This has worked to have my fitness goals be flexible to work with every situation and all kinds of people. And I enjoy my food! Yes, being moderate, flexible, and reasonable is a great way to stay fit!

Moderation in all things, and balance too! Yes, I am a moderate eater and exerciser, I try to practice moderation in all aspects of my life. I believe this mindset is why I've been successful this time around. Am I skinny? No. Am I trying to be?, No. I'm not interested in marathons either, or any extreme forms of exercise. I don't have any foods that are off limits, I just enjoy treats on occasion, in moderation. I'm particular about what treats I do indulge in as not to jump back on the sugar wagon, but they are more special that way, especially during the holidays. I don't have a regimented workout schedule, and prefer to walk outdoors in nature all I can. I also enjoy my Walk At Home DVD's, with boosters, as I get a good cardio/st workout in 20-40 min. I enjoy the elliptical and Xbox fitness games as well. I like a variety, but not a schedule, and I aim for movement everyday, 10 min minimum. I've lost 52 lbs, and I've been in maintenance over 2 years. Moderation and balance are definitely working for me! Thanks for the post. I didn't realize there were so many moderates! I want to be moderate about my approach to food. I think I am a bit obsessive and I need to be less so. I am totally moderate about excersize. Probably need to become more obsessive about that. I truly want to be moderate in all things. Since joining sparkpeople , I have quit smoking and gained almost 20 pounds. It hurts my heart just to put that into words. I have to lose this weight, it is killing me emotionally, but I know I need to be moderate about it. I am hoping that by reading y'all's posts I can accomplish both.

I would say I'm very moderate. I don't like setting rules for myself that I can't follow all of the time, and I'm not going to forbid myself things that make my life more interesting! I do a lot of traveling, and sometimes end up eating food that would NOT pass muster if I decided to be a nutrition hardliner. Last year I was in very rural southeast China, and the family that had graciously agreed to take me in for a night fixed me an egg that they fried in about two inches of lard from their recently slaughtered pig. Was I going to refuse it for having too much saturated fat? Heck no! The same thing goes for eating less than nutritionally ideal foods made by friends or family: to me accepting their gifts in the same generous spirit that they were offered feels a lot better than framing my loved ones as saboteurs trying to ruin my diet. So far my approach has also worked really well for me (lost about 40 pounds so far, and kept them off!) so I see no immediate need to get any more hardcore. :) I do love exercising and do plenty of it, but even my exercise is not nearly as intense and competitive as many folks' (I really have NO desire to run a marathon at the moment, haha). I'm happy doing what feels good to me!
