Because when ever you measure your weight mostly you get the difference in shape of weight gain or loss.So that's why it is not considered a good indicators for your health. But i think it a good indicator because you can easily control over your weight if you have a scale. I am using following scale to control over my weight and weight measurement.www.primescales.com/ps-b500-12x16-bench-sc

Scale can fluctuate from morning to night and from day to day so I agree it is not a good indicator of health.

I just decided to stop weighing myself daily (going to do monthly weigh-in just to monitor). I tend to obsess over it. Also need to stop counting calories; the two seem to go hand in hand. I'm just going to focus on my measurements and portion sizes to keep myself in line to accomplish my goals.

Just take five minutes to regroup, and don't ever forget to make time for what makes you happy.

emoticon I agree. I need to go back to weighing in once a week vs the once a day I have been doing lately. Can be very frustrating and depressing? Like this instance I weighed myself and the scale showed I gained 2 pounds. I just have to remind myself that I am following the program (other than a little slip on Saturday night) and feel great! Silly scale.

I only weigh one time a week. SO that little scale is my friend on my non weigh day and on my weigh in days I get excited because I know even if it is a small loss, I have worked hard to get it and it makes me a little bit healthier.

I've never felt the scale is a good indicator of "health". But it is a good indicator of how much I weigh. I try not to play the "it's water/ it's muscle" game. I know when my weight is up. I avoid the scale. My pants and rings are tight. I can see it in my face, in the mirror. And when I finally weigh myself, the ugly truth is staring right at me, in the form of an undesirable number.

The scale tells me how much I weigh. How much I weigh is an indicator of my health. Therefor, via the transitive property, the scale CAN be an indicator of where your health is headed.....

Don't ignore the scale altogether.

I use the scale and other things to judge if I am improving my health. The last 3 weeks are a great example, that I can't only look at the number on the scale. As it has only gone down a half a pound each week. So instead I look at how my clothes are fitting, the fact that going up and down my basement stairs is not a chore anymore, a diet coke does not appeal to me and the list can go on and on.

Yes, I want to hit my goal weight. However, I did not become this weight over night and it is not going to leave me overnight. I have learned that certain things will trigger poor eating, a walk no matter how short is my friend and water is a good thing.

I take notice of my new habits and enjoy them. Even if the scale is not reflecting the changes. It will in do time.

IT IS VERY EASY TO GET SO HOOKED ON WHAT THAT SCALE SAYS, THAT WE LET IT CONTROL HOW "GOOD OR BAD" WE WERE. I ENDED UP HAVING TO THROW MINE OUT AND JUST GO BY HOW MY CLOTHING FIT. AT THE END OF THE DAY, I MENTALLY REVIEW WHAT I ATE AND IF I COULD HAVE MADE ANY BETTER CHOICES. IF I COULD HAVE, I MAKE A MENTAL NOTE OF THAT. BUT I NO LONGER BEAT MYSELF UP FOR SMALL MISTAKES. THERE IS NO MIRACLE CURE. WE CAN'T GO TO SLEEP FAT AND WAKE UP SKINNY. SO, LITTLE BY LITTLE, WE HAVE TO DO WHAT WE CAN AND KEEP TRYING TO MAKE EACH DAY IT'S BEST.

Many people have said what I believe about weight being only one indicator of health.

As someone who weighs daily and is actively trying to lose weight, I had to let go of the emotional response to the little ups and downs that ALWAYS happened even within an overall pattern of weight loss. For example, today I'm up three pounds from yesterday. But that does not mean I've "gained" three pounds. Last night we went out for sushi. I pre-logged the food and skipped my usual late afternoon snack. I ate actually slightly less than I had planned because I felt full. So I ended the day in range. However, the meal was much larger than my usual meals, and there was a lot of salt in it.. far more than I usually eat. And my digestive system is a bit, um, delayed this morning. So those three pounds were expected, and I will drink lots of water today to help my body deal with the excess salt, and as long as I stay on track the "extra" weight will disappear again over the next few days. In the past I would have confused that temporary hike on the scale with failure, sliding back, regaining the fat. Now I know that it takes much longer than 12 hours for excess food to get broken down and stored as fat, and what other factors can affect daily scale fluctuations so I am not wasting any time worrying about it. I wouldn't even have thought to post about it, except I saw this question!

My scale is my best friend because it is always truthful. I don't always believe it when it talks to me but it is always honest. :) I know when I have had too much of something and feel miserable but I know the scale will still be my friend because the full feeling came from great good for me food. So my best friend is great BUT can NOT do my exercises for me and that is the great health indicator for me. Have a great day.

Love the scriptural encouragement from FITTOBE2! I struggle so much with eating cause I don't feel "on top of things" or feel discouraged. And it's so hard to turn down goodies when I'm at an event. I hate thinking about my weight all the time. I know it is MORE than just diet and exercise - I want God to show me WHY I eat too much.

It is not the best indicator, because someone could be in the "healthy" range of weight but if that person is sedentary, might not be healthy and be "skinny fat", meaning that could have too much fat accumulated in the abdomen among the organs even though it does not show too much, but especially in very overweight people it is a very good compass, I guess that everybody will agree with me that there is no way that a 5'5" person that weights 200 pounds is healthy, no matter how much muscle that person has...

You make some really good points.

Even with normal blood pressure, etc, that extra weight would put extra stress on your joints.

You said that 66% of Americans are overweight. Overweight has become the new normal.

Because it sure can't make me look and feel as good as I do. It can't trim, tone, and tighten me up what I have lost, it can't make me feel healthy all on it's own, make me exercise, or make me crave healthy foods. You can lose weight without exercise, but, it doesn't mean your in good health.

Dear Lord, set my sights on You and Your great attributes. Help me to live in Your presence, dependent on Your guidance each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I would revise that to say that the scale isn't the ONLY indicator of good health. When I weighed 260 pounds, I couldn't just blame my poor health on factors apart from the scale. I weighed too much no matter how I looked at it and in addition to working on developing a healthier lifestyle and a better level of fitness, I also had to focus on losing weight. Carrying around that much extra weight put me at a huge risk of developing many preventable diseases in addition to the stress it put on my joints and body in general. If a person is at a healthy weight, they may not be in good health, but it's rare that an obese person is in all-around good health. Weight loss, along with working on the other factors that contribute to good health, go hand in hand in this journey. At 148 pounds, I might be able to lose more weight, but I'm in healthy range and the results of my recent physical back that up. I can say now that the scale isn't the only indicator of good health but I couldn't say that 100+ pounds ago.

The scale only measures one thing--your weight. How your clothes fit is an excellent way to determine fat loss. If you have a high percentage of fat, then your loss may be more fat than weight.

I played rugby for years and during some relocations and time out for repair periods I would lose 10 plus pounds. Yet clothing got too tight and would stay that way till I got back in shape and added the pounds back that I lost.
I am a fan of getting body fat measurements on a annual basis. That is the truest measure if you are at a healthy weight.

Here is my example: I have lost inches everywhere. My clothes feel looser. I went down a pants size, 2 dress sizes, and a bra size. I'm wearing clothes that used to be too small. I lost a lot of fat and gained a bunch of muscle, according to my doctor. People always say, "wow! You're doing a great job! You've lost a bunch of weight!" Yet, when peple say that, I think, "I gained weight!" The number on the scale has gone up dramatically. So dramatically, in fact, that I am not willing to tell anyone. While the scale says one thing, the tape measure, clothes, and doctor all say something else.

..For the feeling of setting a goal, then smashing it.
To be happy with what I see.

It may not be a good indicator of health (I can vary 5lbs in one week) but it is part of a health conscience routine. Weigh in, log in, track exercise minutes, stay aware of consumption and be happy!

I am 73 and according to the BMI index I have been obese ever since I was 30. I don't know what the basis of the BMI is but the only thing I use in figuring out how much I WANT to weigh is by tracking my body fat figures.
I was training and playing rugby in my 40's and early 50's and was in far better shape than when I played high school sports. The BMI had me at 30 plus body fat.
I use the scales to monitor gain and loss but would suggest you target your weight to something other that a "ought to weigh" number some unknown person(s) determined it should be.
If you are strong enough to do what you want; in shape enough to do what you want; and have a body attractive enough to attract or please the ones you want: then that is your target weight. Use the scale to insure you continue to meet those key capabilities you need for a full life.

It's all good

I agree...I usually lose inches before weight anyway so me and the scale are not friends. I see how my clothes are fitting and how I'm feeling as far as energy.

I don't often weigh myself as its easy to become over dependent on the numbers. But I use my inch tape to measure my progress, and note how tight, or loose my clothes are. That's a better indication of my actual size than a number on the scales is.

Personally I think avoiding the scale is every bit as obsessive as overusing it. There can’t be all that many of us overusing it if 66% of Americans are overweight or worse. I’m sure that some people are too thin or “skinny-fat” but they are an ever shrinking minority. Looking around I sure don’t see many. I would think it would also be easier for them to eat more and get fit than it is the other way around. In the end we all make our own decisions and try to avoid judging others. We all define for ourselves what “being healthy” means for us.

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

GEtting on the scale is a good thing it can give people a wake up call when they are needing to be more careful with their food. But for some people that are scale hoppers jumping on the the scale five to six times in one session is a bad idea. the scale can be a very damaging psychologically for some people including myself.

I stopped weighing myself because depending upon which time of the month it is I fluctuate by 5 pounds and it only gives me false hope or discourages me, so I just exercise everyday and try to eat sensibly and if I feel good why ruin a good thing by weighing myself?!

I find the scale AND further BMI to be not the best indicators. My "happy" weight, as in the one I return to when I'm eating and exercising intuitively is technically overweight. I'm also very healthy at that weight and look ill when it goes much lower. At that particular weight I was able to walk as far as I needed to any given day without an issue (I'm a non-driver both by choice and because of poor depth perception), my BP and cholesterol were terrific (haven't had the latter tested but I still run low on the former...around 110/75), despite being "obese" now I have never had an obesity related health problems beyond my weight taxing my knees a little (I have a genetic joint issue) and me being tired more easily than I was when I was lighter.

I choose to focus on fitness (and have since about age 25..four years ago..rather than thinness because that makes sense for me) and I'm ALWAYS going to have a large ribcage and wide shoulders and hips for instance, it's called bone structure). I don't want to be X lbs as much as I want to be able to engage in whatever activities I feel like (keeping my limitations due to my joints in mind).

This may seem a bit odd, but it truly works at my house at least. An indicator of health is what is in the fridge, pantry, and on the counter. We had been eating a lot of order in foods like pizza and chinese (with heavy sauces), now that i am on a weight lose plan and a healthy eating plan. I have fresh fruit on the counter, homemade foods in the fridge (a lot of spark recipes or slimmed down recipes), and less processed foods in the pantry! I know if I start letting all those processed foods come back that I am not being as healthy as I should.

I also agree with those that said ability to exercise is an indicator of health. I have asthma brought on by my being so over weight. When I am exercising regularly, I rarely have attacks. If I stop exercising I have 3-4 attacks a week.

I ACTUALLY HAD TO THROW MY SCALE OUT! I WAS OBSESSING ON IT AND WEIGHING TWICE A DAY - AT LEAST. THEN WHEN I DIDN'T SEE A CHANGE, POUTED.
SO I GOT RID OF THE THING AND NOW GO BY HOW MY CLOTHING FITS AND WHETHER OR NOT I AM GETTING STRONGER. I ALSO NOTICE A CHANGE IN MY GROCERY SHOPPING. I JUST GOT OUT THE WINTER CLOTHES YESTERDAY AND SOME OF THEM WERE TOO BIG.

The scales have little to do with immediate health, but in the long range, it can figure in heavily (no pun intended).

The scale isn't good for me. I have quite a bit of muscle, so even weighing close to 200 pounds, I wasn't obese as my BMI would indicate. I went to the doctor and they weren't even concerned about my weight. They actually said everything about me was fine except my blood pressure and low cholesterol, and they weren't even sure why my blood pressure was as high as it was.

I've always been pretty healthy, but I do have some excess fat. I figure if I can get rid of that, I'll be even better.

Don't think anyone thinks the scale is an indicator of health, do they? The scale tells you how much you weigh at the particular moment you step on it. I know I'm healthier than I was 3 months ago because now I can walk 10 miles where before I struggled at five, and I am wearing clothes two sizes smaller than I was before.

So true! My husband is in the Air Force. He is 6'2" and has weighed anywhere from 215 to 230. I think the max weight is 215 for his height, but he is pretty muscular. He can run 8 miles easy, and doesn't really have "love handles". He does not have a "gut" whatsoever. I definitely don't think that the scale is a good indicator in cases like this!

i have been on this weight loss journey (this time) since Jan 1st! I lost 35 lbs in about 7-8 months. Since then I have not lost any weight. I am working with a trainer and I have been doing that for 8 weeks. He just did the skinfold test after the 8 weeks and I have lost 4.2% bodyfat in 8 weeks. I have not lost any weight but I have lost fat and replaced it with muscle. I do wish the scale would move but I just keep doing what I am doing and it will get there. The last 15 lbs are brutal! I also went down a size in my jeans.....my work pants are close...one size is baggy and the next size down is a little too snug. Maybe in a few more weeks! Good luck to everyone. Keep your eye on the prize!

I was disappointed that I had not lost more weight until I did my measurements and realized that I have lost inches all over! Gotta remember it is how my pants fit, not the number on the scale. :)

The scale is a measuring device, that is all. It is no different than a blood pressure cuff or a tape measure. So this topic should be say "Normal weight is not necessarily a good indicator of health."
I am old enough to have seen this story many times: "Normal" people on the scale saying, "If I give up smoking, I gain weight." At the end of their abbreviated life, they went from normal to well below normal, but nobody admired their weight anymore. Sometimes they go from normal to well above normal when they have quit smoking because they have such impaired lungs. The only reason they live is because of steroidal inhalers and a portable oxygen machine (my favorite uncle).
Okay, enough morosity! Follow Spark diet and exercise recommendations, stay involved, get encouraged, get to maintenance and thri-i-i-i-ve!

Actually, it IS a good indicator of health-- depending on how it's used.

I think it's a mistake to just discount the pounds-- but I agree that we depend on just the scale when there's so much more to good health than our weight! I have a friend who is about five foot five, and weighs in at about 170--which puts her in an obese category-- and she wears a size FOUR, folks. She's a former high school weight-lifting champion...
...yes, muscle and tissue and fat balance is key! emoticon

The original height/weight charts were based on information provided by polls done by insurance companies because they didn't want to insure someone with a high level of health risks, and they were the 'averages' of the day (1950's, I think)--not necessarily anything to do with "normal" or healthy... and personally, I've no idea when, or even if, what they use today has ever been updated! LOL

One GOOD reason to not discount those "just numbers"...Unexplained weight loss or weight gain can be an indicator of a newly developing chronic or catastrophic illness, such as diabetes or or any other endocrine disorder, or kidney disease, or even cancer... so don't just chuck the scale numbers as useless. Keep track, by all means. BUT...

I think if we just keep in mind that it's only one of MANY indicators of good health, and that it is NOT necessarily an indicator that we are doing poorly, then we're on the right track! I've had cancer--in remission for 2+ years, thanks--AND I have gotten back up to 30% kidney function now, thanks in part to my scale, and tracking on SP.
(I emoticon SP, in case you can't tell! LOL)

I like to use a tape measure and my energy level and doctors' lab reports to track my progress... as well as my scale.

Sorry I got so long-winded with this--my mom was a medical professional, and I really feel strongly about this kind of thing. Whenever a blanket statement is made, it just gets to me--there are too many variables in life, and in our health, to do that! LOL

Here's a toast: to the PROPER use of those scales! LOL emoticon

Be well...
Kathy emoticon

Weight is only one indicator of a body's state of being! We've all been at the place where we've been too sick to eat. Lost lots of weight but at what cost? Remember many years ago knowing a woman who practically starved herself to keep her weight down, but then one day saw her in shorts and she wiggled and jiggled as much as anyone cause she had no muscle tone! Would rather be a little overweight with good strong muscles, a healthy body at all levels, and joy in my heart! and that is my goal!!

A lot of the girls in my office are dieting and have had great success with weight loss. The problem is, they eat a ton of processed food to get there (frozen meals loaded with sodium and lots of energy bars, etc). The scale numbers look great (and so do they!) but I wonder/worry about the long term affect on their health to be eating so much sodium and so many chemicals.

Using the scale as the only indicator of success doesn't work. For most of us the scale doesn't move fast enough... For me that can lead to lack of motivation and depression, both of which are not healthy.

Because (most) scales don't tell you whether the weight is fat or muscle. I originally had a goal weight of 105 (being 5'0", that's a healthy weight) but after doing a body fat percentage test, I discovered that my actual target should be closer to 120 due to muscle. I had been kicking myself for my weight being so high for years, when it was really due to the muscle I had. I'm beyond happy about working to lose 15 pounds instead of 30!

Great advice! And Congratulations on working out so consistently! I think one of the hard things about the scale is that it moves so slowly! If that's our only indicator of progress, it's easy to get discouraged. The scale is much more an indicator of long-term results rather than day-to-day successes. I think body weight is one sign of health, but there are lots of other healthy things a person can do RIGHT NOW- eat some veggies, drink a glass of cold water, go for a walk, stretch - that contribute to health without necessarily changing the scale immediately.

I've been working out for 3 weeks almost everyday. I have only missed a couple of days. The days that I didn't work out left me feeling tired. I haven't lost weight but I feel better than I have in a long time. So I am trying to focus more on feeling healthy and less on the scale. I still need to improve on what I am eating. The point is that you can be improving your health and not show it on the scales. I think I need to stay focused on exercising and eating healthy to feel good and try not to worry about the scales.

I've decided to focus on how clothes fit and only weigh myself every few weeks. Been doing weight training, and I've heard muscle weighs more than fat so I figure if I lose fat and gain muscle the scale might not go down very fast.

I know it is not the best indicator but I always weigh in once a week ...now that I cannot work out till I get the go ahead the scale is what keeps me going ...if I dont lose and dont gain then I am happy for now .....but I also agree that you should also go by how your feeling and how your cloths are fitting those are good indicators as well.

Good point. The scale is an indicator of weight, not health.

But the two aren't entirely unrelated, and most of us probably are trying to lose weight for the sake of our health and not just our vanity. It may only be one aspect, but for me it's an important one and the first one I chose to tackle. Without any other lifestyle changes but losing weight, my cholesterol and blood pressure go way down, and those are a couple indicators of health at my age.

One of the frustrating things is that I've dropped from 175 to 158 fairly easily and now the scale is stuck!

The most accurate measure isn't the scale anyway, it's using a measuring tape or a skin caliper to do body fat %. The scale can really ruin your day from a visual standpoint. So I measure once a month as well as figure fat %.

I only weigh myself once a week at this point. The daily fluctuations were driving me insane! right now I am focusing on the fit of my clothes and how I feel.

When I was going to a weight loss clinic, the scale there could break your weight down into how much fat, muscle, water, etc you had lost. They sounded like they knew what they were doing, but then they told me stuff like if I had had a pedicure that could throw off the impedence and, hence, your numbers. Can anyone shed light on the accuracy of these types of gizmos?

It's not the only indicator by any means but for me, its a very important part of my weight loss/get fit quest. In my journey, I weigh each morning and it keeps me in focus.

The scale might not be the best, but it's the easiest! Just about everyone can step on a bathroom scale, but it's not as easy to calculate your BMI or body fat. Plus, I must say, weight and body fat does not make up "health".

Athletes usually go more by body fat versus weight...
As far as the average American goes, the BMI chart is fairly accurate.
I will say, however, that they don't take into consideration body types.
I'm an apple shape, and if I was overweight, I'd be WAY more unhealthy than someone who holds it in their thighs.

Very true, SHERYLDS. That's why I'm getting the weight off before those things start! Nip it in the bud! I do have well controlled high blood pressure and maybe I will get off those meds.

Weight IS one of the indicators of health...
It just isn't the ONLY indicator of good health.
Muscle tone, BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels...etc
are all components that add up to how healthy or unhealthy a person is
scale or no scale.

But being overweight is like a mine in a field. It may just be lying there undisturbed until it gets stepped on ... and then it sets off a whole series of explosions know as 'metabolic syndrome'
