I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

It's personal accountability for me and I don't necessarily need others here on SP to know. Yes, this is supposed to be a community, but I am not close to anyone on this board, so I share my the majority of my triumphs and struggles w/ those in my inner circle. Occasionally, I will post something of a personal nature on here, but that is the exception rather than the norm.

Because everyone is different and has differing needs, so while it may be helpful to know about one another, each person may not be at the point in their journey where they are ready to share with what starts off as strangers. emoticon
Also some folks from the older generation still aren't into posting their lives on social media &
I'm one of them. It isn't the way we were raised and it takes time to get into the habit. I still keep many things private when posting. Plus I think many ppl are too into themselves - most others really don't care about anyone but themselves.

Could be that they don't realize it is set to private or that they are just private people.

I don't remember whether I set my page to private or not, but I don't do anything with it anyway so it doesn't matter. I just prefer to keep my personal details (name, face, etc.) off the internet. As many people have pointed out, it's just too widely available even if you think you're just commenting here. I think sharing stories/experiences is what it's all about and the message boards and groups provide enough of that for me.

To be fair, I don't think many realise that they have it set to private. It took me a couple of weeks to realise that I was not getting blog comments because no one could see it!

Makes me kind of laugh when I think of it. If everybody set their page to private, wouldn't be much of a benefit to anyone. Support and helpful advice from others is one of the greatest benefits on here to me.

my sparkpage is private because I had too many people on SP trying to control what I eat and what I do for exercise. I'm not the type of person that can be told to eat this or that or not eat this or that because I'll do the opposite. I truly believe what works for one will NOT work for another because we are all different.

PLIDC1 don't go offline...you need to realize that you are worth the fight!! We all have issues and we all struggle with those issues until we win! You can do win!!

I once had a spark page here with lots of pictures and a few blogs a week. That fit me then. I left and now I don't have a page because this is what fits me now in my life. I did have send private message but it disappeared and I don't know how to get it back. I comment on blogs and I only think it is fair that people can respond to what I said if they want.

I saw numerous pages go private with that mishap a year or two ago when your blogs were put on your Facebook page and people did not know that. There was a big stink here and that was removed. People wrote their friends and decided to keep private page because of it and just realizing that even though Facebook was removed, the general public could just Google your user name and find all your blogs and posts.

Some people go private because of business reasons which I understand. As far as safety goes, if someone wants to find you and harm you they can if your page is private or not. The internet has made that very easy.

CAMEOSUN, I know what you mean. I used to look at people's daily food intake so I could get some ideas for menus. Many are private and the ones that are open are not fully populated - mine isn't either.

Anyway, as an offline person I don't mind telling people what I'm done if it helps someone:

I aim for 1200 calories a day + 2 fast days per week @500 calories each (when I'm in the mood to do them!) = 30lb lost since Feb 2013. Now weighing monthly, don't record weight if it goes up or stays same as don't want to damage motivation - I just get it sorted the next month :-)

Exercise (as yet) = nill :-0

I wondered that also. Because sometimes I see how much weight someone has lost & want to see how/what they were doing/changing to succeed. But can't because it's Private??

Unfortunately there are posters who are very judgemental or purposely bait other posters. This is happening to a SP friend of mine right now. A woman is reporting each and everything he posts which can get him kicked off even though there is nothing wrong with the posts....she just doesn't like him!

Here are a few reasons:

1. There are creepers all over the Internet.

2. Judgmental people who may post negative comments on their page.

The deliciously ironic thing about this thread is that now, a year or so after the original post, the original poster now chooses to keep their page private!

That's an outstanding point, RITAROSE. It's also the main reason why I consider that situation with anything I put up on my page - or not. We have a need to be careful.

Yep - that's the only reason why mine's offline. Say's private but really it's offline. I rarely look at it now and can't remember the last time I posted anything on it.

There are two options a person has for two different degrees of privacy, Try...

Here's what to do to access them. Go to your SparkPage, and choose the Edit option. Then, you'll see SparkPage Options: and More Options: Under More Options: you can select

Only allow my SparkFriends to see my page

or

Turn my page offline

I hope this helps.

I didn't know if my page was public or private until this thread. I don't really use it so it doesn't really matter and I don't care if I am friends with people.
It does seem like if someone wants to be friends that they could leave their page public or at least send each other a message or two before asking to be friends.

I googled my name and mostly other people with my name came up. No blogs that I have written on Sparkpeople have come up, nor was my name associated with Sparkpeople.

Now if I google suzieque77, my Sparkpage comes up. Who else would google Suzieque77 besides someone who saw somethng I wrote here and wanted to know more about me? I just don't see that I have anything to worry about there.

I do not want my Spark information super-public because as I said, I am more likely to write about personal feelings and experiences here than on FB. I will keep my profile public on both SP and FB. And I will continue to never write anything on any website if that writing could be detrimental to me if the wrong person saw it, and knew it was me that wrote it. It is foolishness to assume that privacy settings are fool proof. If someone wants to find what you wrote on SP or FB badly enough, they will find it regardless of your privacy settings.

I think my page is public but I don't do much with it. My Facebook account, however, is a different story. I am on FB a lot but have my settings as private as possible. My life is no one's business unless I want you in on my business. If I did more on my SP page, I would probably make it private as well. It's nothing personal against anyone else. I just want a little extra privacy.

Some people are just private people. They come on the site to log calories & they don't really need the interaction with people. I have yet to do my spark page. When & if I do, it will be private. I was on Facebook & my ex-husband tracked me down. Not that it's a big deal, we always remained friends, but my husband of 25 years wasn't happy.

Interesting stuff, TEKGIRL! I just Googled myself and found I'm also a Rio de Janeiro jewelry store! Even though I don't blog, you can still find out quite a lot about me by Googling - nothing I care about displaying, one way or another, but still...we're very public here.

My page is open, but my personal policy about blogging is never to put anything out there I wouldn't want my mother to see. I share my page because I am living with stage IV breast cancer, and if by blogging about that can help even one person who is also dealing with cancer, then I feel that is what I should do.

For the thoughts I want to keep private, I have an "old fashioned" paper journal that I write in.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, and living with Stage IV breast cancer since 2007.

Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

My Sparkpage was private, but then I started noticing that people whom I thought I had "friended" could not see my page. I believe I made it public but I'm still not sure! I keep my Facebook page public but would rather have at least part of my information on Sparkpeople private and here are my reasons why...

So many more people that I know in real life are on Facebook. I figure it is silly to make that private because people fool themselves if they think a friend of a friend somewhere is not going to share your private information at the time you least expect it! (Especially if you live in a small town like I do). So I think carefully every time I post anything and ask myself: Is this something that it would be fine for the whole world to know (including those who may not like me or that I consider enenmies, and possible complete strangers). If my answer is yes then I go ahead and post. Otherwise, I don't post it. This means most of my news is rather generic, happy news about events in our lives, and I love to share pictures of our travels, etc. on FB (after I have returned home so it is not obvious I was "gone" somewhere).

The difference with Sparkpeople is that I actually share more personal information here, like my feelings about weight loss and maintenance, and struggles in life. I do NOT want to share that with everyone and would rather share it in a somewhat anonymous way with friends that would otherwise be strangers if I had not met them on Sparkpeople. For example, I would not want everyone in my "real" life to even see the "before" picture I have posted of myself, but I'm quite comfortable sharing it with Spark members, and even hope it might encourage or inspire someone to reach his/her own goal.

So ideally, I would want my Sparkpage private and my Facebook public, but I have made my Sparkpage public because the privacy settings are too restrictive for my purposes of sharing with other Spark members.

Mine's not private, and it gives people some sense of who I am, what I like, and how much weight I've lost...plus how I did it. But I don't blog, and I don't post pictures of myself here or on Facebook, nor do I disclose my full name. I love spending time online and have "met" so many lovely kindred souls, but I also value my privacy.

Anyone who has pictures of their children or grandchildren or who talks about them a lot SHOULD consider making their page private. It's really easy for someone to figure out where you live from little clues in the background of a photo, and to figure out your work routine and/or a child's daily routine from clues in what you write. A local news report did this a few years back. They chose children who carefully did NOT put up what they thought of as "personal information" like real name or address, or even photos of themselves in their bedrooms. But they did have pictures of other rooms of the house. From paint & carpet colors, window design, etc, the reporters could figure out who the designer/contractor of the house was, when it was built, and which direction it faced. They could figure out what school the child attended from references to school colors. Once you knew the school district and that basic information about the house, there are all sorts of public databases that show you any house matching the description-- usually there's only a handful of possibilities. And since kids of course talk about their extracurricular activities, the reporters could figure out what time these girls would be walking home from practice or lessons or whatever.

Also, with image search programs, someone who has your picture can use it to find you (or other people in your pictures) that way, even if they don't know your user name.

You don't have to be paranoid, but if someone *does* choose to keep their page private, it might be because they've heard stories like that and they want to be able to share pictures with friends but not the whole world. I've always kept my page public, but I very carefully make sure that no one else is identifiable in any of my pictures, and I try never to use anybody's real name (not even just the first name) in my blog.

I think any number of people value their privacy and are concerned about the way information has a way of leaking out on the internet. Since I'm a fairly private person myself I respect that choice.

Meh, embarrassment has nothing to do with it. It's just no one's business.

They may feel embarrassed, when I first joined, which wasn't that long ago, I thought about it too but there is so much support so I saw the value. Others may not be at that point yet.

I know I have thought about making mine private in case someone from work saw it (my highest weight) but I love the support I get on here to much! I'm proud of my accomplishments and don't care if people see my "fat" pictures!

It's kind of weird that anyone can see your page by searching on Google, but Facebook is the same way, and so is Livejournal (the only other social type pages I use). However, they have security features that let you keep whatever you want private, friends only, or public. I'm sure a lot of people on here don't want intimate details about their lives and bodies out there for the whole world to see.

IMO, most social media is a huge time sink. I think we give up way too much of our privacy to total strangers, too quickly and too easily. Plus, there are a few people out there who are just plain wackadoodle and I'm not going to give them a quick and easy way to stalk or harass me if they totally misinterpret something I say.

You can "unfriend" someone without needing to access that person's SparkPage. Click on the following link and follow option 2 of how to remove a friend:

@CHICCHANTAL "They haven't friended me back and since their spark page isn't open to me, I can't remove them as a friend either."

I hadn't thought of that angle.

Also, if you don't have a SparkPage, you can't receive Goodies from anyone outside your friends circle.

You are worth it!

I don't really do social media, I have a twitter account I never use, I haven't got a Facebook or Linked in account, and my name on here is a pseudonym. I would also rather share all my blogs etc only with other SP peeps, but in any case I do make sure that anything very personal about me is suitably anonymous.

I was wondering because I friended someone a couple of weeks ago. They haven't friended me back and since their spark page isn't open to me, I can't remove them as a friend either. Bit irritating but I know not to friend people who keep their page private now.

I think fewer would keep their spark pages private if our spark pages were only found by other spark members not the WWW!

Someone sparkmailed me, wanting to befriend me, but when I searched for his sparkpage, I realized he doesn't even have one! I'd rather not take the risk, as I don't know anything about him!

I have a friend who keeps her Sparkpage private. She told me that she feels her journey is about her and no one else. Seh likes to "blog" so that she can go back and read about her successes and challenges, but she doesn't want to put it out there for others. I guess we all go about our journey in a different way and that's how she feels comfortable.

I do NOT want to gain what I have lost (or lose what I've gained!!)

I think maybe they don't want to be all over the internet so they stay private. It's weird when you google your username and your page pops up. What I say on Spark I want to stay on Spark. That being said I'm not listed as private either.

I would have to agree that having a spark page is paramount to success and it is a great tool to have it accessible to others. My page is not set to private... Come by and visit ANY time!

I agree. I always try to figure out what warranted the friend request. I also will sometimes look a Spark Page before replying to a question on the message board.

people may have their page set to private because they don't want to be listed on a Google web search. I did a Google search once and one of my blogs showed up on the first page! That was kind of odd.

or maybe they are having problems with another poster

or they reveal more personal info and prefer to have access limited

might be a few reasons.

1. They are a private person, and don't want to share
2. They don't know how to share it with others, and managed to create it, but do little else
3. They only created it to get the points; but don't have content in it

I'm sure there are others, but those come to mind.

I'm curious to know this, because to me the big plus about SP apart from the trackers is the amount of support you get from other people, and speaking for myself, if I'm going to 'friend' someone I want to know a bit about them to see if we have shared interests for example.
