I don't wear cologne, ever. Just plain soap, thanks.
Really dislike it also when women (or men) wear perfume/cologne. Without fail, it's always way too much, lingers in the air, clashes with others' perfumes, and can cause some people to have allergic reactions or asthma attacks.
Very light scents, like lavender or citrus, are okay... but far too many people bathe in perfume/cologne and it's IMO very rude.

It's extremely rare that I actually like the smell of it anymore. In fact hardly anyone I know ever wears the stuff anymore. Hm... has cologne become unfashionable?

the problem with perfumes is that it smells different on different people. My mother, sister and I were shopping once, and we all tried on a certain scent.
On me, it smelled wonderful. On them, it was like skunk.

My husband used to wear "Route 66", but they don't make it anymore. Me, Chantilly used to be my scent, but it made me sick, asthmatic, so gave that up. I can't wear any smelly stuff anymore, and hate to be around someone else that does, like when you go to church or something, all those smelly mixtures.

You can test the perfume before buying it, and since you claim it smells after about two hours then you would wait until next day to make a purchase if it worked out. otherwise it must stink. Wearing it lightly is key, too much equals too strong and then it starts to smell like bug spray, urine, pine sol, and other things that are not pleasant.

I like vanilla and lavender scents. I only wear light body sprays though; colognes and perfumes are too strong and give me a headache.

I don't wear cologne or anything, but I wear Old Spice Matterhorn deodorant and my husband says it smells really good on me. He wears Old Spice Komodo, which is amazing. We both use really basic scents in our soaps/shampoos (generic cheap shampoo smell like Pert Plus, old-fashioned bar soap with some kind of musk scent to it), but none of it's really overpowering and there's still a person's individual scent underneath that. I think that the important thing about wearing any sort of scent is to find something that works with your natural smell and doesn't mask it too much, if at all. Clean skin and hair smell good on their own! There IS some kind of cologne (I'm pretty sure it's one of those unisex ones because I've smelled both men and women wearing it) that makes me almost dizzy with joy whenever I smell it; it's not a very common/popular scent because I don't come across it often, and I have no idea what it actually is or even 'flavour notes' of the scent because all I can think of when I smell it is happiness. I've never known anyone personally who wore it, so I'm at a loss as to why it makes me so darned happy!

I am at the point where I don't like perfume or cologne. I stopped wearing it when my first child was born. I was told that the baby could smell me and recogonize me. I wear it sometimes but don't like being around people who wear it real heavy.

I like things with citrus notes (especially in warmer weather), and spice notes in winter. Don't really like florals, or "woodsy" scents (at least on me).

My favorite scents are Angel by Theirry Mugler and Chanel No 5. You would definitely want to order a sample of those, because they are quiet spendy.

I like light scented, flower based cologne, white flowers especially. Nina Ricci L' air du temps and Estee Lauder Beautiful have been my favorites for years. I wanted to try something new, so lately it's Givenchy Very Irresistable and Valentino V. Love those two.

Here are my favourites Coco by Chanel Ombre Rose by Jean-Charles Brosseau Ghost by Ghost (current favourite) Fleur de Figuier by Fragonard That are all very distinctive, I hate scent that just smells like scent. Ghost is the odd one out, it's sort of vanilla and musk while the other three are all flowery, though Coco is very heavy.

One of the scents I like is Ange ou Demon by Givenchy.
I found a classification by types of scents. In each category, you can click for a list of names.

I've had the same results you have. If I wear a scent I liked when I tested it, I can't stand it after a few hours. If I really put on a light, light amount it's alright - very light. For that great coconut smell, I was going to dot on Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil. Also, the Coppertone Sport sunscreen has the smell. There was a cologne I bought that smelled like the beach, but I don't have it anymore. When I wanted to try some different scents, more than just the testers in stores, I ordered samples online. For a few dollars you can get samples of most of them. Donna Karan makes a perfume with a clean scent, but it's almost like nothing at all. Another one I just noticed online is "Happy" by Clinique. I ordered from www.fragrancex.com , but you could just google "perfume samples," so you don't have to buy a larger amount until you know what you like.

I never wear perfume anymore, as I can't seem to find one that smells good on me. I have even stopped women in stores, asking them what cologne they were wearing. Yet, when I purchased the perfume they recommended, after wearing it for a few hours, I could not tolerate the scent and had to wash it off.
So what is the scent that other women prefer? I would rather smell a clean refreshing soap rather than over-powering flowers. My favorite perfume had the odor of insect spray, reminding me of happy times camping when I was a child. My co-workers finally told me that they couldn't stand my bug spray smell. I also liked the smell of coconut or cocoa butter, which brought me back to the beach when I wore it.
However, to attract a man, perhaps the smell of fried bacon or beer would be more effective. Did anyone see the story about people choosing mates by smelling pajamas that had been worn by potential partners? I guess we all are attracted to different scents, just as we are to different looks and different foods.
