obese clinics for kids, dark ring around necks?

I thought this post was informative. I hadn't know about this sign, and I hadn't personally had experience in this myself, although I have seen it in others, young and old. My question is, at this time in our lives, shouldn't the child's physician notice these signs? Granted not all children see a doctor for whatever reason, but it seems more or less like it goes unnoticed and unattended. I'm glad to see in some posts that there are some attentive physicians, but with obesity on the rise, I'm sure they could step up their game a little. I'm just concerned for the future!

OMG, I've never heard of this, and I am always reading "health articles". thank you soooo much for posting. I have a very overweight granddaughter that lives far away. Next week I am going there to help another daughter after the birth of my new granddaughter. I am definitely going to check my overweight granddaughter's neck

Could this be why my mom scrubbed my younger brother's neck almost every day? All I remember is her saying that he "attracted" dirt. However, she just turned it red with her brush. Yikes!!

I have heard about the dark ring around the neck before. That is a big clue for parents to have their child checked out.

Great info - thanks people! As a teacher, I am interested in seeing some posts/feedback about how to respectfully inform parents about these things. I was thinking something in the monthly all- school newsletter? It could be informative but not targeting any particular student. Maybe start an ongoing health column? What do you think?

it's actually a dark ring around the neck and i wasn't aware of it either , I would recommend watching the series of Weight of the Nation it was very informative.....

That is a sign of insulin resistance and pre diabetes.

I had never heard of the ring either or several other warning signs of diabetes. I really wish they would do a better job of publicising this it may have help me a great deal had I known what some of these warning signs were.

I've never heard of that before, though I have seen it on different people...children and adults. I guess I just assumed it was just skin discoloration. I think it should be more well known though!

I've never had that ring before although I was overweight as an adult for a few years, but I have seen it in other overweight kids. I never knew what is was though.

I also had it, and I remember my mom commenting because she knew it wasn't dirt but didn't know what it was. I wasn't an overweight child at the time, but it was right around puberty when PCOS began to kick in and mess everything up (I gained weight rapidly shortly after). I wish we'd recognized the symptom back then instead of ten years later.

The good news is that the dark skin discolouration went away when I got healthy.

Thank God I never had it! But maybe I have, I was a little obese when I was had a depression at 18 (because the meds made me put on weight).

I really wish there would be more publicity about the "dirty neck" warning signal. I had that as a child and again when I became obese as an adult. My mother used to scrub until she was scared she was hurting me (she was, but I wouldn't complain because I wanted it gone, too.) It looks exactly like when you're sweaty and dirt gathers in the crease of your throat. That mark coming back when I was an adult was one of the things that scared me into doing something about my weight.

Most parents aren't aware of it. Some teachers know, but in a lot of school districts they're not allowed to say anything because it's so hard to know whether the mark is from high blood sugar or whether it's really dirt, and either way the parents are going to be offended. They don't want to hear *either* "Your kid is dirty" or "Your kid is fat."

I use to have a dark area on the back on my neck like a light brown rough area probably this long:

I wasn't even aware that they had obese clinics for children, I was watching weight of the nation and they are all over! They have one in Boston, I never knew such a thing even existed, did you know that when they see a dark ring forming around a child's neck that is a sign they'll have sugar?
