I probably won't be buying the book because I just don't need more books! But, I do think it's nice that Mrs. Obama is a proponent of gardening and that she has sparked some interest in it in the country. Anything that gets people to get out, do something and eat healthy food items (instead of fast food) is positive.

I think that there certainly are a lot of people who are just negative because they insist on bringing politics (and, to a lot of people, politics means hating on those who are not in their same political party) into everything. It's just a book that talks about the White House Garden and I think that it would probably be interesting, regardless of the political party of the author.

Edited to add that it seems all the proceeds are going to the National Parks Foundation.

NO! I live in an apartment in Chicago - and I would not generate money for the Obamas even if I wanted the book. She's using it for photo ops and fund raising - no way she'd actually WORK at it.

No.

1. Because it's impossible to plant and grow anything in this Texas "dirt". It's like concrete.

2. Michelle Obama almost certainly does not take care of that garden by herself. I bet there are several people who tend to it, not to mention the state of the art sprinkler systems and irrigation, etc. To try to replicate it would cost a regular person their entire year's salary if not more.

3. Just not interested.

I prefer gardening books that give me horticultural information from trained sources, like any other reference book I'd buy.

If I were just buying it for interest because it's her; then, perhaps - but it's unlikely I'd bother, as my gardening consists of window boxes and pots, so any gardening book I already have is likely sufficient.

No. If I were going to buy a gardening book, I'd buy one from a different author more known for being a great gardener.

I have nothing against Mrs. Obama but I am not one to buy something authored by a celebrity (including politicians and First Ladies) just because they are famous and also happen to have an interest (and may be good at) something like gardening, or cooking or whatever.

I'm not buying it to find out how to grow things, I loved the pictures some of the recipes that it has by the chefs of the white house and because the money goes to help parks.
It's well illustrated and I happen to think she's a wonderful lady !

Starting to like the new me!

I love all the passive-aggressiveness in this thread. "I was raised that if I can't say something nice, not to say anything at all." Give me a break. There's been more pro-capitalism bills passed during his presidency than under any other president in the past 50 years, but people still cry "SOCIALISM!" Okay then, no more fire department, public roads, clean water, medicaid, medicare, social security, or elementary schools for anyone who doesn't like socialism.

Anyway, to answer the OPs question: No, I wont be buying her book. I live in an apartment and cannot have a garden, though I'd love to.

Give up everything you love, and everything that tastes good = weight loss! Simple as that!

Of course! In fact I plan on buying 10 copies to distribute to some of my middle class friends as we are big advocates for the Obamas. I find Michelle so inspiring that I was thinking of starting a neighborhood group so we can meet and discuss our gardening techniques and various ways to fight childhood obesity using public funds. Awesome...You go girl!

Wish my arms looked as good as hers!

Oh, maybe. I love gardening. :)

I refuse to make this into a political statement.

This is my body and it's fine.
It's where I spend the vast majority of my time.
It's not perfect. But it's mine.

I feel totally like you do. He is destroying our Country, and it seems like the politicians who are very liberal are just letting our coutry go down, down, down!
I feel the most we can do is pray that these politicians & the people who would support this will come to their senses.emoticon

Enough good cook books around, Mrs Obama shouldn't have to sell a book to get money for playgrounds- there are enough people both private and in business life whom could and should donate stuff free of charge!
Alot of the children in the 2000 era won't make adult life- don't brush bad decisions on to one man shoulders- the problem was there before Obama was on the scene- it has and is a group effort that has done bad stuff to the US..
Starting with parental supervision what is healthy and good that goes on the dinner table- and how much the younger generation moves- it ain't even poverty anymore because obesity is also a middle class and rich mans disposition illness too!
Here in denmark they wanted to close my sons primary school- parents rallied together make the school private did markets and sold services to make everything modern with effort from rich and poor alike- we purchased our kids play ground equipment! We didn't wait for government or the first ladies hand outs!

Also we just lost our most huge donation giver A.P. Moller – Maersk Group is based in Copenhagen. He donated to many many great things to the danish community.. Look to big business to be more kind hearted! They have a great chance to make themself look like decent organisations helping the community..

didn't ask if you like her husbands politics asked about her gardening book with the proceeds going to parks for kids. As far as his politics, I'll definitely be voting for him again! He was left a huge mess by the Bush administration and the guy's not god he can't perform miracles, but he did kill several huge terrorist threats like BIN LADEN!!!!
As far as the economy if he didn't do the bail out the recession would of been devastatingly worse. If you want to blame anyone for what has taken place with the economy blame Wall Street and all the greedy people , wasn't it Bush who deregulated a lot of the policies?!
I love how everyone thinks it's all Obama's fault and forget about good ole George and Dick...

I absolutely WILL NOT. i, too, cannot wait till November. And before anyone screams at me, it is NOT because he is black. It is because he is a total incompetent Socialist bent on destroying this wonderful country as we know (knew) it.

There, I am now off my soapbox but would welcome decent and polite discussion.

Michelle Obama's Patient-Dumping Scheme
By David Catron

The First Lady helped create a notorious program that dumped poor patients on community hospitals, yet the national media ignore the story. Imagine if her husband were a Republican.

The University of Chicago Medical Center has received a good deal of justly opprobrious press over its policy of "redirecting" low-income patients to community hospitals while reserving its own beds for well-heeled patients requiring highly profitable procedures. Substantial coverage was given to a recent indictment of the program by the American College of Emergency Physicians. ACEP's president, Dr. Nick Jouriles, released a statement suggesting that the initiative comes "dangerously close to ‘patient dumping,' a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act, and reflected an effort to ‘cherry pick' wealthy patients over poor."

Oddly absent from most of the unflattering press coverage of UCMC's patient-dumping scheme is any mention of the role our new First Lady played in devising the program. A laudable exception has been the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported last August that "Michelle Obama -- currently on unpaid leave from her $317,000-a-year job as a vice president of the prestigious hospital -- helped create the program."

(SNIP)

But no amount of journalistic lipstick can hide the reality that Mrs. Obama's initiative is a patient-dumping scheme. Such "cherry-picking," as Dr. Jouriles accurately describes it, was, at one time, fairly common. Prestigious institutions like the University of Chicago Medical Center routinely "dumped" Medicaid, uninsured and other unprofitable patients on less mercenary community hospitals. Many patients suffered needlessly, and more than a few actually died, as the result of this practice. So, in 1986, President Reagan signed the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act (EMTALA) into law. EMTALA made such "redirection" illegal, but many high profile hospitals still chafed at being forced to treat poor patients. Enter Michelle Obama, UCMC's "Vice President for Community and External Affairs."

Gosh, I really don't see how anyone can have anything bad to say about the woman. I love what she's doing in encouraging kids to eat healthier and connect with real food and such, but I so dislike gardening that I probably won't buy her book.

No, I won't, and since my mother taught me that if I can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything - my mother is a wise woman, so I won't be commenting about Michelle Obama.

I saw her on Rachael Ray and I have to say that I just love Our First Lady! She is such a good role model and the veggie garden was just absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how she gets kids from all over to help with it , teaching them how to plant and what good food really looks like fresh.
I'm going to buy the book, the proceeds go to parks and they have some wonderful recipes from some of the White House chefs.
I found the whole show very inspirational and it was great watching them pick fresh from the garden and making dishes.
The book really does look like it's beautifully done and can't wait to get it.
Will you be buying it?
