Making changes to your diet that you can maintain is the only way to keep the weight off. If I want the chips, cookies, etc, I "plan" them into the day in moderate amounts. Which, of course, are smaller servings than I used to eat of them, but enough to satisfy. Start slow into exercise, it's the only way to learn to love it, and look for the euphoric feeling you get after it. It took a while, but I now walk a 5 mile path in 75 mins and love it. I'm even thinking about jogging part of it now. I may not love the exercise everytime I do it, but I love the feeling I get afterward. Again it's about moderation and balance.

Thanks for the suggestions....I know that it isnt a diet...it is a change of lifestyle of eatting healthy. I know the icecream, cookie dough and chips are probably my mainstay... I know how to quit...but doing so is the hard part. I think I need a mental change....Stress makes me say just forget it all and I am back at it.
Definitely need a attitude adjustment!

I have found that I have to just log what I eat, good or bad, and look over it at the end of the day and see what I've done wrong, or right. Each day I try to improve upon that and after a while it isn't so difficult. Exercise plays a HUGE part in weight loss. DO NOT STRESS if you fall back a bit. This is not an overnight success. Just keep studying each day and improve upon that. I wish you much luck and stick with SP.emoticon

I've known a few that have tried the 17 Day Diet. They all gained more weight afterwards. If it was me trying it I would substitute similar foods.
I started with eliminating soda and then sugary sweets and the rest came through substituting for similar but healthier choices and I'm very happy with how I feel.
Fad diets are rough because you come into it on a strict diet its like quitting cold turkey.
I like the slow and steady approach.

Diet is a very bad four letter word. All you have to do is eat healthy and remember portion size and everything in moderation. My first word of advice is if it's packaged it's probably not good for you and the noisier the packaging the farther you should stay away from it. Research low glycemic foods too.

Hi Strawberry,
I actually tried the 17 day diet. The first 17 days your are limited to all you can eat fish, chicken and Turkey, and cleansing vegetables. Fruits are limited to 2 a day before noon and you neet to eat 2 servings of probiotics a day: yogurt, saurkraut, a special kind of cottage cheese and kefir(?).

At first it seems great because you can eat all you want of certain things, but then by the time 17 days is up I was dying for some variety. I did lose 10 lbs.

The second 17 days you can add a few things like beans and some starchy vegetables and a little beef. I didn't lose much the second 17 days.

The third 17 you can eat more normal variety with limitations. By then I was tired of the program and am sorry to say I didn't stick with it.

There are some good ideas with the program but I think makeing a lifestyle eating change by incorporating thinks you love and sensible eating is better for the long run. I also like the food tracker with sp because even if you overdo you can still track it and be accountable.

I hope this helps you with info on the 17 day plan.

As you sit and read this message, you are staring at the most amazing help you will ever get. No, not this message. This website. SparkPeople.com! I have been with Spark People for three and a half years. I am not yet at my goal weight, but I have lost seventy pounds and managed to NOT go back to my original starting weight. Without Spark People. I have no doubt I would be pushing 300 pounds by now, if not more. Each time I find myself slipping, all i have to do is get back on Spark People every day, even if it's just for a few minutes to get all the inspiration and help I need. If you're feeling discouraged, get out there and read the success stories or go visit some spark pages, or go to the Introduction forum and say hello to a newbie. Read the blogs, the articles, do the polls and take a quiz. Before you know it, you will be encouraged, inspired and on your way!
Hope this helps. You can do this.

It's not called "DIET" it is called eating alot "HEALTHIER" and so the way I do it is.

Eating anything you want from A-Z....just steam your foods or bake them and I don't
drink anymore soda's or sweets or fried foods...and I stay away from those fast food places.

And by me doing this I have lost 52 lbs and I also do my bed exercises.

You can go and check out my page if you want..

I have found out that by doing portion control and measuring helps me to get though this.

Try this for a week and see if it helps you?

I have never done well on a specific diet plan for a long time, do this only if you can make it into your lifetime plan..if you want to lose a just a few lbs by summer it may be ok.

If you develop the habits of success, you will make success a habit.

I have never done well on a diet for the long haul. For me, there is nothing in a book that can help me any more than whet I already know: Eat healthy foods, watch portions, exercise. There are no good or bad foods, just eat in moderation. Alcohol makes me want to munch on high calorie, high sodium snacks. I know these things in my head and I work daily to make them a reality in my life. For me, any deprivation of certain foods makes me ugly:)

I agree with drawing on the power of a life style change. It really comes down to your motivation and beliefs. My life partner-girlfriend finally got a health diagnosis that explained why she felt so ill and weak: Hashimoto Thrroidosis. The diet selections went from French cuisine specials to dairy-free/gluten free and raw foods. She has to follow a 9 week strict cleanse program to restore her whole system.
What it taught me in the last week is the incredible will power we have and can fully access when the motivation is choosing to remain alive!.. Her diet change is not an option. At some point you simply have to powerfully choose to deal with your self and examine your beliefs/priorities.
Having decided to LIVE, to stop grieving the loss of deliccious French Cuisine goodies, we're looking for help.

Who has gluten free and dairy free recipies they love?
Thanks for the help.
Stephanie

Everyone's different, but what everyone is saying is true.........This is a process. If you start incorporating your own favorite healthy foods into a plan that's a big step in the right direction. It can't be a "diet".....It has to be a lifestyle change.

Agree.
All "diets" end up failing, unless it creates a lifestyle change.

If people would use the word "diet" to indicate what they choose to eat as their lifestyle, then they'd likely be discussing a "menu plan" rather than a "quick fix".

Anyway, I've not tried that one. People at work did, and they seemed rather obsessive, and didn't stick to it long. One person did it multiple times, though - but, honestly, I'm not sure I noticed any difference.

I just shop the outside of the grocery store with the exception of a few can foods, cereal and condiments. Eat as many natural foods as possible, drink lots of water and exercise. Its not about a diet. Its about a lifestyle change!

I've been where you are. I'd go buy all the food for the 'diet' and making up my mind to make it work. They never did. I always failed. Everyone is different though and there is no 'diet' that works for everyone. Maybe the 17 Day Diet will work for you. Dr. Phil endorses it. What worked for me was 'not going on a diet', just starting out by making a couple of small healthy changes, once they became habits, I added a few more, and so on and so on. I track all of my food and exercise and I keep a blog to keep myself focused. I haven't taken any giant steps, just a bunch of tiny, baby, steps.

I can offer you one suggestion that I live by now: Don't give up. Every day is a new opportunity to take a step toward success

Eating healthier and exercise is the way to go. I would maybe talk to your doctor and he can see what you need to focus on. For example some people need to lower their calories or fat intake others might be sugar. Take a day to sit down and plan your dinners. Eat lots of chicken and vegetables. I also try to find a recipe on sparkrecipes to use every week.
For lunches I basically eat the same thing every day. I either bring leftovers or eat a sandwich with fruit and yogurt and cottage cheese.
Don't stress yourself out once you get into a routine it makes it a lot easier.

I know people that have been successful with South Beach but I think true long term success will be easiest if you incorporate foods that you enjoy or find similar more healthy options. Have you tried just plugging in your favorite meals into the food tracker to see how the fit into your calorie range?
