Spark fan here, don't care for MFP. I've been using spark for four years - know it pretty well.

Does anybody using the MFP scanner know how much data it uses? I don't want to go over my data usage. I use both, MFP is easier to track food and fitness but I like the information that Sparkpeople has and the exercises.

I use both. I also got an android tablet for Christmas. I use MFP to track food and exercise. Yes, they are missing some of the Spark features. I'm loyal to Sparkpeople, but my disappointment was when I can't use the tracker away from WiFi. I can use MFP anywhere as long as its something I already tracked and then it will sync when I'm connected to the internet. If Spark could offer that feature, there would be no contest. I still use the Sparkpeople community for support and motivation.

Both SparkPeople and MFP have their good points. I have tried MFP, and do check in over there periodically, but I prefer SP. I like the overall site and features better, and the community is more supportive.

I use the lose it ap for tracking my food. Its a lit easier than spark. I use the scanner a lot. However my calorie allowance is higher on spark then on lose it.
As long as my calories are between the two as is in the high lose it and the low spark I'm good. The important thing is that I track.

I love it. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that it is kind of an unappealing interface. I think it needs prettier, more colorful features.

I just tried the scanner feature on MFP and it really made tracking my food easy! I think I will use that to track food from now on. It's too bad SP doesn't have something like that, unless they do and I just don't know about it.

I use both but I'm not as active on MFP as I am on spark. MFP has a bigger database but not as active a community. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. It all falls down to personal preference and what works better with what each individual person is looking to get back from a site.

I've been using SP for almost 5 years now, but last yer I started feeling I needed something else, so I started tracking on MFP. I will agree that the tracker at MFP is much better for food. And I really liked that it gave you extra calories to eat when you worked out. However, I HATED the community there. Everyone is always snarky, they post ridiculously inappropriate comments all of the time, I dont think the mods do a good job of moderating. I started feeling more negative the more I logged in. I was still using SP for the community, and when I learned SP's food tracker now gives you your exercise calories back, I am back to logging my food here. I tend to make the same foods regularly, so I enter it in the recipe calculator, log it as a new food and save it to my favorites, and now I'm done. I truly dont think it take me any longer to log food here than it does on MFP. SP is much more positive and upbeat, so I am back for good.

Edited to add: I also have the SP app on my iphone and ipad. I got them for free. I use them and dont have any issues with them.

I also use MyFitnessPal and SparkPeople. I do like MyFitnessPal better when it comes to tracking. I got SparkPeople as a FREE app. They do have one that is 3.99. There are two. One is FREE. I use the FREE one. I use SparkPeople to track also because when I log into the computer my data has been recorded. I do like the community of SparkPeople.

You didn't magically burn more calories through Sparkpeople. Sparkpeople just overestimated your calorie burn. I use a heart rate monitor for my workouts.

I don't like Sparkpeople for tracking because it simply is not flexible for my plan. I went online and calculated the calories I need to eat to maintain my weight if I sit around all day. Then, I subtracted 20% of that number. MyFitnessPal will give me back calories based on my workout and Fitbit calorie burn automatically.

I did that for a week. I was more motivated to move, I did not feel guilty or deprived, and I lost the 4 pounds I gained the week before. On Weight Watchers or Spark, it would have taken me weeks to lose that even being perfect.

Plus on days I hit my fitness goals, I can eat over 2,000 calories.

I see a lot of people writing about : I don't like it" but why?? I like the app for MFP however in one week using it I gained compared to my first week here where I lost 5 pounds. I tracked one exercise on both and according to Sparkpeople I burned 400 calories more ! How can no one but me notice this difference? Who cares abut community etc what about the brass tacks and what we are here for WEIGHT LOSS

I do a merged program, or rather I am starting one. I use MFP for tracking because of the Fitbit adjustments (my goal is to eat a 20% reduction of my total daily caloric expenditure). I do have the Sparkpeople app, but I feel MFP is better for my current needs.

However, I am following the guidelines of Sparkpeople- starting with a fast break and making gradual changes. I also prefer the Sparkpeople community. I'm just not using the Sparkpeople trackers.

Tagging onto an old post too.

I track my workouts no matter what. Food, nah!
This past March 2013 I joined a Biggest Loser challenge and started working out again after a year (shattered my foot last year). I averaged half a pound weight loss until mid May. I decided to track my food. In one month I lost twice the weight I lost in the previous 8 weeks.

The first week I used simultaneously My Fitness Pal and Lose it! to track food and workouts. They are the top 2 apps/programs for tracking.

MFP seem to have a much bigger database. Lose it app only allows you to enter exercise in 5 minute increments, so 48 minutes has to be rounded to 45 or 50 minutes and you can't override the calories. I didn't like the website.
The MFP app was nice and I love it. My estimated exercise calories are usually close to what I actual burn but I use what my Garmin heartrate monitor says which is usually a little lower.

I didn't know SP even had an app. I found it a week ago by chance. I went to get it but it was $3.99. Nope, not when MFP is free and good. The Amazon app store has a free app of the day, everyday, usually a game. A couple of days ago, the free app of the day was the SP app!

For now I am testing it out along with MFP so I will let you know how I like in a week or so.

SP community however beats any other, hands down.

2013 Goals:
- lose 50lbs
-stay consistent in my workouts
-strengthen my recently broken ankle

2012 Accomplishments:
-cosistent training after healing from a stress fracture in my foot
-completed a 10 miler, 10K and a half marathon
-sorry my year ended in Maym 2 weeks after my half marathon when I crash on my bike shattering my ankle. I had surgery and ortho put in 8 screws and a plate.

Hello ladies,
I am currently battling the same between both! I love the community aspect of Spark, but it is SOOO much easier for me to track my calories with My Fitness. I do notice that My Fitness has a smaller amount of fat and protein that I should consume every day, compared to Spark. I always go over my amount of Protein allotted for My Fitness, but according to Spark I am in range. It's all very confusing!!
If spark had an app to scan barcodes, I would definitely just stick with the one program!!

Did anyone else notice that the fat grams are rounded up in MFP? I was comparing a food to some of the entries and noticed this. Spark lets you enter nutrients as they appear on packaging and MFP doesn't. I also like how SP has a fruit/veggie tracker; MFP doesn't. At this time, I've been tracking on SP for a long time and have a lot of favorites saved.

I agree with you, Tammy. MFP is hands-down easier for logging. I left SP because of it. I don't like the MFP community, though, so I came back over here for that. I can't see spending the extra time logging in both places, so I will probably log on MFP and socialize here. :)

OK, I know that I too am using a very old post, but I have to check in with everyone on the MFP vs the SP. I love the indepth information provided through SP, the books, the videos, the articles, the everything, except I don't like the logging aspect. MFP has a much easier, faster, cleaner means to do this via a smartphone.

Has SP ever listened to these posts? I know they added the bar code, but overall the database does not seem as large or as available as MFP. The app for MFP runs so much faster and cleaner so I tend to run to that. I am doing what some others are - logging into both systems. It is difficult and takes a lot of time. I could be exercising during the time that I am double posting.... LOL.

I wished SP would link with MFP - let them do the food database and the tracker app -- they are so much better...........

Anyone feel the same way ??

I know this is a super old post, but I have always used MyFitnessPal and am just signing up for SparkPeople. I used SP briefly in the past but found it was loud, hard to navigate, not enough foods in the food tracker, very hard to add custom workouts and many other reasons I felt like MFP was probably better (I started using both at the same time) MFP has really proven to be everything I wanted. It's nice looking, free app, biggest food and exercise database I've ever seen, also customizable, the community is very motivating, I can't express how much I love the app and logging offline so it can sync when I'm around WIFI again and that it will sync to other programs such as bodymedia or fitbit devices. I love the reports that show my weight, nutrition and progress history, being able to create my own recipes and meals, and search them later. I love how it tells you after your log your food and exercise what you would weigh in 5 weeks if you continued eating that way. I'm starting to use SP now because I like the workout videos, and I've heard good things about recipes on here. Although I can always find those on google, I figured I'd give it another try. After reading that it costs money for the app though, I'll probably stick to MFP. emoticon

My Fitness Pal's mobile app is still free. Just found out that Spark mobile apps are $3.99 a piece. And they don't work properly. It's a no-brainer. Free and works vs. $3.99 and a terrible app. Like I said, no-brainer...

Peace. Love. Dog kisses.

I know this is a really old post, but I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I just started using these online programs this year. I used sp for several months, and liked it, but then I found my fitness pal, and decided I like that better. I wish I could remember why. I think it was because of the fitness tracker. Anyway, I think I'm coming back to sp. One thing I like much better than mfp, is on sp you can add to your favorites more easily. On mph, you have to create a new meal for each food you want to change, and it takes an extra step. I find it cumbersome. Also, each page on "my meal" is alphabetical, so if you are looking for apples, it could be on the top of any of page and I have 4 pages of "my meals". On sp you can do a search of your favorites. On mfp you cannot. MFP has a "recent" page and a "most used page", but they have only very recent information - they are not very useful.

I like the communities on both.

I know this is an old post, but I just heard about MFP and I am signing up tonight. I will experiment with it over the weekend while still tracking everything in SP, and we will see what I like better. I just started out, so perhaps I will either switch over to MFP or stay with SP depending on what I like. The thing that scared me about what you said is that a lot of the stuff on here could be wrong because it's entered by SP people and not bar codes or site admins. I want everything to be accurate so I KNOW I am getting healthy and not accidentally eating 100-200 more calories than I think I am. Losing weight is really important to me. Thanks for being really informative throughout this thread... it helps. I love SP so far, but if MFP is more accurate and "clean", who knows where I will end up... I am a really loyal person though... so SP is already grown on me in the week I have been here :D

As a BodyMedia Fit (Body bugg style monitor) I have a very good idea of how much I really burn when I exercise. I noticed that the MFP site over or under calculates calories burned by 200-300 calories sometimes. SP is pretty close to calculating what is on my monitor.

Just something to think about, especially if you are adding calories to your food intake based on the MFP info. Still, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the MFP site for food logging.

But it is all SparkPeople all day for everything else. Fitness, Community, Challenges... emoticon

I loved the database and user-friendly-ness of the MFP app. Everything else about SP is way better. I really wish SP would get a food tracker like MFP where you can scan barcodes in and things. Would make tracking food much less of a pain. But I love the community here, the fitness plans, the meal plans, and the points system. I don't know what it is about those points but I love to log as much stuff as I can so I can get more points and spin the bonus wheel! lol I think it's psychological for me, but it's been one of my best motivational tools. That and the challenges.

First, Wired magazine gave their mobile app a 10/10.....some people will understand how significant that is....for those that don't, you *rarely* ever seem them hand out a 10 for anything. Rarely.

Secondly, the interface on myfitnesspal is CLEAN. There's not billions of adds weighing it down and 42 billion things you don't need. It's focus is on a clean interface. Maybe I'm lying...try it out for a couple of days and see.

I think there's more control on SP, but like my ipod..I just want it to work cleanly and do the job I need it to do...nothing more.

I love that my iphone can catch the barcode and most food is already entered and accurate.

Watch what you add if it has been entered by a member on SP. There is a LOT of incorrect info on our site!

I had never heard of MFP until someone recommended it to me the other day (I've been using spark very successfully for years). The two things I love about it that I really wish Spark had were

1. The app works offline. I use an ipod touch, this alone is almost enough to convert me!! I currently have to write notes and then track when I find wifi somewhere, which is very inconvenient. With MFP I could track anywhere, any time.

2. The app is faster to load and a lot more clearly laid out. The website also seems a lot faster to load (fewer high-bandwidth ads... the ads on spark are just making it worse and worse if you have a slow internet connection).

However, I have entered most of the foods I eat and a lot of recipes into spark, and have good connections through my teams, so I guess I'll be sticking around... but

I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD FIX POINTS 1 AND 2 ABOVE... are you listening, site admins??

I used it before finding the Spark. I thought "My Fitness Pal" was the best ever until I was searching for a recipe and discovered SparkPeople...WooHoo!!

My DS#1 uses MFP because of the app. I prefer SP and my laptop. The food data base is bigger than you think on SP. When I'm tracking my nutrition for the day, I put my food item in the "search" box, hit "search", highlight the item, and then hit the little "dot" for "Search foods shared by other members". Then I add it to my favorites if it's something I use frequently.

I used it for a little while. I didn't like it. I prefer spark for tracking but I know how to use this site and I suppose that makes a difference.

I've used it. To me the community really sucks lol. The community is why I feel I'm successful on spark and without that I think failure rate is higher.

They do have a better database which can make entering easier if you don't feel like inputting new foods. The site is also "cleaner" than this one. Less cluttered and more organized I guess you can say which helps with not feeling so overwhelmed.

I love spark so much that I wanted to learn web design to help them out with making the site more streamlined but I don't have the time. lol

I use MyFitnesspPal on my android phone because the database is amazing. SparkPeople just doesn't have everything that MyFitnessPal does - I mean, it really has everything. I don't use both because I dont have time to double enter, plus the mobile user interface for MyFitnessPal is much nicer and easier to navigate than SparkPeople, so I can enter food on the go quickly and without problems.

I am using MFP and just yesterday come to use SP.I am VERY confused about everything on SP and am a bit overwheled with everyhing on this site! The food data base does not have a whole lot of the food that I am eating and I don't know how to log my exersise (I am doing 30 Day shred)I will probably keep my account for the sparkteams, but if I can't get the hang of everythingelse than I will keep using MFP to log exersises and food.emoticon

I just barely created an account yesterday and I don't like that I can't enter my own calories burned (like when I run on the treadmill). I hate trying to figure out what MPH I ran and averaging it. it seems very facebook-y. I also got an email everytime anything happened on my account... don't love that! Plus it gave me 1200 calories... is that my limit? my minimum? I don't care for it so far...

I'm a tracking FIEND! I use Weight Watchers, myfitnesspal, and Spark. Pretty much the only reason I use mfp is for the database. It's HUGE. I use it first and then enter the item into SparkPeople.

Has anyone tried myfitnesspal.com? I only ask because they have an amazing app for the android tablets ( I just bought one). I am hoping Spark will get something similar so I won't have to cross over! I am wondering if anyone uses both SP and MFP?
