Usually new clothes, makeup, hair things, shoes. If it's a big milestone, going out with girlfriends and dancing to my success :)

Something "healthy" -- but that can mean anything from a new cooking oil spritzer, a new workout dvd, to new workout clothes, or even a piece of workout equipment.

Well it all depends. For smaller goals, I reward myself with things such as accessories, itunes, or a good book. For larger goals, I reward myself with clothes with my grand finale being a trip abroad. emoticon

The most effective reward system I have used is to set up a number of things that I take time for myself to do when I have the time. Examples include exfoliating, using face mask, shaving, doing my nails, wearing jewelry, purchasing a song for my iPod, getting a bang trim, moisturizing, wearing makeup, getting a massage, pedicure, taking progress pictures, etc. Then, I tell myself I can't do those things until I lose the weight. Once I reach the goal weight for that particular reward, I reward myself and continue to do that thing when necessary as long as I stay at or below that weight. However, if I gain weight, I have to stop doing it until I lose it again. Every time I reach a goal, I feel special and entitled to do that for myself and it becomes extremely motivating. If I really want to do something and can't because I'm not there yet, that is very motivating as well! You have to set it up right so you're not going a month without shaving your legs, but it works great for me. : )

I know some of these will probably have been said before, but there are lots of things that I do to reward myself when I reach a goal. If the goal was smaller I might do something like buy some spices I don't have to encourage using less salt when I cook, or I'll buy some fruit that's a bit more expensive or not in season (my family's on a bit of a tight budget) like starfruit or dragon fruit.

If it's a bigger goal then I'll do something like get my hair done or dyed, buy a new game to play on the Wii (I really like the DDR games), or if I can I'll save up to go to a water park and spend all day swimming and going down water slides, which is a fun way to be active.

But of course these are just things that I like, there are lots of different things you can do!

I have been very faithful with activity program. It is something I enjoy and have some control over -- unlike home / family / work life. So I pre-paid a gym membership instead of being on a payment plan. I have given myself a vote of confidence because I'm worth it. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I noticed my past frustration when equipment doesn't work as expected at home (stretch bands; weights peeling; distractions with "housework" calling my name -- why only me?). So this way, I do what I need to do, and use the home options as plans B, C and D.

After trying out reward and punishment systems multiple times last year I've come to the conclusion that they don't work for me.

I am definitely getting a whole new wardrobe when I reach my goal weight though (it'd be practical since I'll need clothes that fit).

Call me Sandy. My goals are reaching and maintaining 120 pounds, running a 5K race and performing 48 push-ups in a minute.

Not for weight loss, but after my quarterly doctor's appointments to check on my diabetes, if the news is good, I have gone to go get a little coconut cream tart across the road at the bakery. But...that doesn't seem right, does it?? Sugar for good blood sugar control??

Today I will go, get my good news, and then find some new way to celebrate.

I like rewards that bring happiness too - such as flowers, pedicure, massage, new work out clothes and gear, time with my dog walking in the park, and maybe for an extra earned reward I could spend some time one on one with an instructor.

losing the weight is a reward in itself. I don't like rewarding something that I should never have managed to get to in the first place. But on the other hand, getting healthier with every pound lost is good enough for me.

Up until yesterday, I haven't done anything like this. I'm not even really sure that yesterday was truly a weight-loss reward. I listed that in my reasoning... but I think it was just an excuse! I also used my recent birthday in that list of excuses. hehe

I had a medical appointment not long ago in a large professional plaza which offers space for local artists to display their works. I happen to love Sandhill Cranes, which migrate through here a couple times a year. A local artist had a couple pieces on the exhibit wall which so beautifully captured their spirit... I was enchanted. I took her name and contact info sort of halfheartedly ... surely such lovely pieces were already sold, but living out their "display life" until the happy new owner/s came to collect them. The asking price was so outrageously low... I simply had no hope. But I called the artist, in any case. They were still available! OMG!!! Then I had the poor grace to ask her to give them to me for a (lesser) price for the pair! what's wrong with me?!?!? And she took it! O joy. So I now have a gorgeous pair of one-of-a-kind Sandhill Crane oils on my bedroom wall, where I stop to admire them many times a day.
I lost weight!
It was my birthday!
I rarely buy myself anything, so this makes up for years of putting "fluffy" wishes aside.
Pick an excuse.
I have Cranes!
emoticon

So far as a PLANNED reward?
Well. I lost my beloved angelkitty a couple years ago. I miss him miserably. But I'm in the process of losing *SO* much weight that I'm sure I'll need body reconstruction when I get to goal weight. That means I'll need someone to help me recover from the surgery, and the DH isn't nearly so avid to have another kitty as I am. It would be hugely unfair to expect him to take care of me post-op AND have to take care of a babycat which he doesn't even think we "need" (?) at the same time. So, when I get past that next hurdle, I plan to get another kitty. Maybe not a baby. Maybe an older rescue, who people typically don't want. Their prospects are so grim... even though they're wonderful kitties and still have so much to give.
That is my planned reward. I hope I can get to that point soon, because I'm miserable without a pet. Who ever heard of a Vet Tech without a pet. Or a houseful of pets.
It's totally and inexcusably unconscionable.

I need to stay focused. My kitty is waiting and hoping for me, too.
I'm coming, Kitty.

~vicki~

I actually have a reward for myself for every 5lbs, I have things that make me feel girly, manicure, pedicure, massage, jewlery, perfume....and I have on there a vitamix blender for 100lbs clothes, sky diving, shoes, gym clothes...just some.

Hi Cool stuff - I like your idea of rewarding yourself for different streaks. What do you consider a "small" streak vs. "medium"? I decided this week that I was going to reward myself for a streak of 7 days straight of sticking to my calorie range but went over on day 6 and now I think I should have made my streak smaller because I feel like I deserve a reward for having gone 5 days. Not sure how this should work.

I don't - seeing my weight go down and my shape improve is plenty of reward. I buy new clothes when I need to - but that's not often because I'm now wearing all the clothes that I'd grown out of. I don't decide to reward myself with new clothes because my best clothes purchases tend to be impulse buys when I just happen to see something I like.

I'm rewarding my healthy habits streaks, because I can actually control them-I know that if I do 10mins of exercise a day, I WILL earn a reward, rather than rely on a scale and my unpredictable body!

Small streaks are things like nail varnish, a song from i tunes, a bunch of flowers.

Medium might be clothes, shoes.

Long term (100+days) a day out-I like the look of Cadbury world, or go Ape. I promised myself if I make a whole year on a streak, I'm going on a weekend away. Plenty of time to save! emoticon

My rewards vary from goal to goal. Some examples of rewards that I get myself are: weight loss aids like a nice pedometer for walking or new shoes, new clothes for losing inches, other rewards are things like charms that represent a particular goal, perfume, jewelry, etc.

I have different reward systems. When I reach a pound lost goal, I get something that no one else would buy me- this month it was a white teapot and matching cup for my tea at work. when I reach a fitness goal, like I just walked a 12 K, i do a spa treat.

I like to reward myself with a massage, pedicure, time to read a good book with coffee, a movie, or a new workout outfit. I also like to set up rewards that don't cost money like a (non-cardio) hike, walk around the zoo/museum, or some other fun outing.

I rewarded my self for starting SP. I rarely shop, but I decided I would take better care of myself and dress better. I got my nails done to start, later a new purse, and then bought a new coat. I'm trying to decide what my next rewards will be. I'm taking more time to visit with friends, so that's a great reward.

Still deciding. Personally, i like goals. For me it's more fun; it's like a bonus level in a video game!

for little goals I'd say getting my nails done.
For bigger goals I'd say going to the beach for a day, or inviting my friends to play lazer tag!
for BIG goals, I'd say getting a kitty (I want one so bad!) or a tattoo

and for everything in between, new clothes! Or better yet; old clothes I can fit into better then when I bought them!

I think a charm bracelet sounds like a great idea! I have been buying myself accessories for every month that I stay on track, since I just started my program Jan 4, that's only 2 months so far, and I've bought myself some spandex wicking pants, I need to get a shirt, too. This month, I think it will be a massage, I could seriously use one, but I also have a list of things that would make my new lifestyle easier, like a good sports bra, running shoes, a gym membership, some small things for home, like a balance ball, resistance band, etc. I don't have much money to spend on little extras, so it's a nice treat.

Discipline is just choosing between what you want now, and what you want MOST.
