Meeting up for a 5K (Trick or Treat Trot Virtual 5K)A few of us Brevard residents are meeting at Wickam Park on Sunday Oct. 30th @ 5 pm (start time) to do a 5K WOG (Walk/Jog) This is an "unofficial" Walk/Jog that a couple of local teams are putting together so we can do our "Virtual Race." The YOU CAN DO IT Challenge!For Thursday March 3, 2011:EAT RIGHT WITH COLOR March is National Nutrition Month! Splash some color on your plate! It's National Nutrition Month and the theme is "Eat Right with Color." This month the American Dietetic Association wants you to make healthy choices by incorporating a colorful variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy into your meals every day. "ADA encourages all Americans to take time during National Nutrition Month to look at their eating patterns and begin to make the small improvements that, over time, add up to significant health benefits, " says registered dietitian and ADA President Judith C. Rodriguez. National Nutrition Month National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign sponsored by the American Dietetic Association to promote nutrition awareness and education. It originated in 1973 as "National Nutrition Week" and expanded to the month-long observance in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. The theme changes each year, but it always focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Eat Right with Color This year's theme, "Eat Right with Color," provides an easy way to focus on improving eating habits — simply include plenty of color on your plate! "Adding a splash of colorful seasonal foods to your plate makes for more than just a festive meal. A rainbow of foods creates a palette of nutrients, each with a different bundle of potential benefits for a healthful eating plan," says registered dietitian and ADA Spokesperson Karen Ansel, who offers up this quick fruit and vegetable color guide. Let Color Be Your Guide to Nutritious Meals and Eat Right with Color During National Nutrition Month – While the trees may be bare in March, there are still plenty of colorful and nutritious foods to fill your plate. During the 2011 National Nutrition Month®, the American Dietetic Association encourages everyone to add color and nutrients to your meals through this year's theme: "Eat Right with Color." "Adding a splash of colorful seasonal foods to your plate makes for more than just a festive meal. Fruits: avocado, apples, grapes, honeydew, kiwi and lime Vegetables: artichoke, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, green peppers and leafy greens such as spinach Fruits: apricot, cantaloupe, grapefruit, mango, papaya, peach and pineapple Vegetables: carrots, yellow pepper, yellow corn and sweet potatoes Fruits: blackberries, blueberries, plums, raisins Vegetables: eggplant, purple cabbage, purple-fleshed potato Fruits: cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, red/pink grape fruit, red grapes and watermelon Vegetables: beets, red onions, red peppers, red potatoes, rhubarb and tomatoes Fruits: banana, brown pear, dates and white peaches Vegetables: cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, parsnips, turnips, white-fleshed potato and white corn Ansel recommends choosing a variety of colors when shopping for seasonal fruits and vegetables. "And for additional options in the color palette, choose frozen or dried fruits and vegetables available throughout the year," she says. "Instead of grilled chicken and mashed potatoes, consider painting a more colorful plate, such as grilled chicken topped with salsa, mashed sweet potato, asparagus and spinach salad with orange slices. A colorful meal is not only visually appealing, but it also contains a variety of nutrients and is quite flavorful," Ansel says.
