SparkPeople Cookbook Success Story: Confessions of a Former Junk-Food Junkie

I grew up in a family that loved to cook, and cooking has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. But then there came a time when I stopped cooking for myself, and that’s when I really packed on the pounds. Why cook when I could buy a meatball sub or burger? It was easy and convenient—no muss, no fuss.

Now I’ve learned to pay attention to what I’m eating, and by cooking for myself, I don’t have to rely on eating out. I can create my own healthy meals. And it’s easy! If I want, I can even make my own healthy version of the meatball subs I used to buy.

When I was overweight, my primary veggie was the French fry and the occasional serving of broccoli. Today, I eat six to nine servings of fruits and veggies every day. I eat whole-grain breads, cereals, and pastas. I used to really love fried foods and buffalo wings. I ate them regularly. Today, I like grilled chicken or salmon. And I really do love my leafy green salads: I’ve learned to like bitter leafy greens like radicchio lettuce, chard, beet greens, mustard greens, kale, and spinach. Yes, I still eat pasta—eggs and butter, too. My motto is “all things in moderation.”
