I've been working on low-carb, high veggie foods - basically, as I call it, the "all salad diet." It's working for me and I'm seeing some progress. Salads in California springs and summers can mean anything at all and I don't limit myself to traditional in any way.

What I haven't been so successful with is exercise, as soon as I get back from an upcoming business trip, going to set up some personal ch... Fri, 24 May 2013 13:38:25 EST Beating the (Afternoon) Heat http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5282485 No fast food since I started SP, which I am mortified to admit is a big success. I feel like I may be more or less past that.

Working still on afternoon binge, but starting to have some success- copious amounts of both chewing gum and spicy chai teas worked Thurs and Friday to keep me preoccupied and full enough to beat the afternoon heat of boredom/hunger.

Weekend was a wash in terms of diet but lots of physical activity. Now on to a new week and going to make it throug... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 12:10:27 EST Success! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5278663 Yesterday I beat the afternoon binge!

The tools: lots of chewing gum, tea and water.

Huzzah! Fri, 8 Mar 2013 10:09:44 EST Gaining Balance (and not even metaphorically) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5277458 Months ago I read an article, that of course I can no longer find, that talked about senior citizens and falling injuries. I work a little in public health and it's well-known in those circles that falls are one of the top THREE reasons that seniors visit the ER. Locally, it's the number two reason. So important to address it and the article talked about how folks can increase his or her balance and core strength with a few simple changes in daily life. Don't push off when getting out of a ch... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 13:03:15 EST Death in the Afternoon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5277294 These afternoon binges are killing me! I actually DID MY TAXES in an effort to stave off further snacking yesterday afternoon. Which, I have to admit, worked, but I can only use that excuse once a year.

That may suggest to me that distraction is key. Def snacked yesterday but it wasn't TERRIBLE and didn't derail my entire day/night. But still, working to get that under control. Wed, 6 Mar 2013 14:45:10 EST Personal Challenge Complete (kind of) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5272543 Well, I completed my 5 Day Personal Challenge over the weekend, with overall success, if not 100% success.

No fast food for five days: YES! It was a big one.
No trashy food for five days: Uh, not totally but pretty good.
Secondary personal challenge of exercise every day, 10 minutes: Kind of, at least walked a little but didn't raise a sweat very often. Improvement but not success.

Okay, so let's reset.
Personal Challenge 2: No binging during the day. (Ni... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 10:52:11 EST Day 4 of Challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5268405 Okay, so I'm plugging along. No lbs lost today but plenty of salt yesterday to account for that. I'm thinking that a good long walk and low salt today will make for noticeable change tomorrow. And in to the future. I mean, that's what we're doing here, right? Day 4--- Going to be a total and utter success. Fri, 1 Mar 2013 10:55:12 EST Day 3: yes!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5267932 Pretty much on track today! Huzzah!!

No fast food, no trashy food. Whole foods only today. A little too much of it but I'm moving forward, feeling possibilities. Also, a 90-min walk with friends. Nice all around.

I declare Day 3 a success. Fri, 1 Mar 2013 00:21:40 EST Update on Day 2: http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5267166 Well, so I did drive past a location trigger, but then at home, totally snacked my way through the afternoon, pretty compulsively. So a win and a lose. Today is a new day.

I'm going to stick with my 5-Day-No-Fast-Food challenge, though. Too easy to give up. And must move forward! Thu, 28 Feb 2013 11:41:53 EST Yee haw http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5266322 Made it past my big trigger today without falling into the trash food trap-- day 2 (thus far) a success. Sounds small, and feels a little small, but I remind myself, L by L. That's what I'm going. L by L. Wed, 27 Feb 2013 18:14:45 EST Personal Challenge: Day 2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5265839 I made it through Day 1 of my no-trash challenge. I even did a little better, eating nearly the right amount of calories. That is, was on the diet track, moving toward overarching calorie goals.

I might overlay an additional Be-Active goal on top of No Trash Food, perhaps starting tomorrow. Five days of 15 minutes of exercise a day? Screw it, I'll start it today. Yikes!

Day 2, Trash Food Challenge.
Day 1, Be Active Challenge.

Good luck, self. Wed, 27 Feb 2013 10:42:38 EST Personal Challenge: http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5264800 Challenge:
No fast food for five days.

It's crazy, I'm a total liberal foodie but find myself in the fecking drive-thrus, hoping I don't know the person behind me. What am I doing? I'm thinking that baby steps - five days without fast-food binging - would help me to build up a reserve of motivation that I can deploy on longer periods.

I know that losing weight is simply (ha!) a calorie game, I'm making my first move.
Today is Feb 26. Challenge ends March... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 14:00:06 EST
