YELLOWBRICKRD's SparkPeople Blog YELLOWBRICKRD's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community It took about 18 months, however ..... I have finally lost the extra weight that has been (literally) hanging on since our tropical vacation in 2009 - as always in real life, there have been any number of issues that hindered total dedication to weight loss (duh!) such as work, health issues, etc. but I truly had gotten to the point that I felt I just wouldn't get back to maintenance weight - ever. And even more frightening, I had talked myself into accepting it. Motivation is so difficult to fathom - where it comes from, how long... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 06:24:08 EST Sometimes Balance Just Isn't Possible ..... I am happy to see from my last blog entry I had had enough sense to stop work and go home to get in some exercise. Unfortunately, from then until now, I have averaged only 3x per week to get in exercise because work has been so hectic. Working 7 days per week for 12 to 15 hours per day is not a recipe for feeling motivated to exercise - I have been lucky to keep up with chores that need doing at home during this period. I have been on track with eating, though, all during this time. Year-end ... Sat, 27 Feb 2010 10:31:58 EST Taking the Time .... Long and busy day at work but at 5:30, I packed up some stuff to do at home and came home! I have done chores around the house, finally ate my usual breakfast for dinner because I missed it this morning and did 43 minutes on the stationary bike at a resistance of 14. Once I log in here, I'm off to do some of the business work that I brought home. I feel good that I was flexible enough in my approach to stop working for a while and take time to exercise - we'll see if I'm so sensible tomorrow!... Tue, 12 Jan 2010 20:11:03 EST Better Days Feeling much better and am at work at 6am as usual getting ready for a busy day. I really like my job, which always helps since we spend so much time at our work. Food yesterday was very good ... no M&Ms although my DH had a large bowl (!) of them by his side while he was on the computer ... I didn't take one - still feeling guilty for all I ate during Christmas break, but I think it is "healthy" guilt! It is bitterly cold here in New England this morning - yikes!

Good day everyone... Mon, 11 Jan 2010 06:33:30 EST Lesson Learned (?) Ack - I went to work this morning because I have been out for two days with "something" and when I got home all I felt like doing was taking a nap! Should have given it another day before venturing out.

I have read quite a bit of the Spark - am into the description of the second week of the 28 day program - I did not join this site until almost two years after I lost the weight following South Beach so I really never followed the "structure" of SP. I did experience one of the "cr... Sat, 9 Jan 2010 16:09:59 EST Under the Weather I have some kind of bug that's "going around" - chills and lightheadedness so I've been working from home and napping between emails! I plan to do a light session on the stationary bike tonight because I am starting to feel better.

And happily I am not inhaling comfort foods - sticking to healthy choices, so that's good.

Interestingly, I found myself purchasing the Spark for my Kindle today because I need to read something inspiring. It's kind of fun to understand the h... Fri, 8 Jan 2010 16:47:31 EST Gaining Some Discipline Today I tightened up a bit more on my eating - just forgoing desserts and candy clearly isn't enough; so today when I caught myself thinking about a bagel (the big ones at Dunkin Donuts but mulitgrain!) and coffee with real cream, I said whoa! sister, you don't need all that - get back to the office (I was running errands at lunch time) and have greek yogurt with blueberries (which I did) and then had a nice salad filled with veggies/boiled ham and my own vinaigrette dressing for dinner tonig... Wed, 6 Jan 2010 20:18:14 EST Good Day Good day for food and exercise ..... no M&Ms for me tonight! Hard to believe that M&Ms are my nemesis but there it is! Mon, 4 Jan 2010 20:01:21 EST Snow Walking Phew! DH and I went snowmobiling on our property earlier this morning and then I took our dog for a "walk" (more like a climb) through the snow. Our property here is on the side of a mountain and let me just say that walking up hill in deep snow is a work out!!! My dog had a great time and so did I except for somewhat frozen ears. Back home today and then off to work tomorrow bright and early.

Happy 2010 to all ! Sun, 3 Jan 2010 12:01:09 EST Winter Wonderland It has been snowing steadily here for more than 8 hours - lovely to behold when one does not have to drive in it. DH is out on his snowmobile - I may join him tomorrow before we head home to take up real life (and real work) again. This has been such an enjoyable holiday season except for the cookie excess and I am looking forward to 2010. Life IS good and we must appreciate every single day either for the joy it brings or the opportunity it presents to make things better.

Happy ... Sat, 2 Jan 2010 15:42:27 EST Slowly .... slowly .... Thanks for the encouragement ladies!

DH and I had a pleasant NYE ... after dinner (which was exactly as I described it in the previous post) we went home and DH started a fire .... we greeted the new year with our dog and cat and I had one additional glass of red wine. All in all, a very happy day.

I might have trouble walking outside today because there is a fair bit of snow here in VT; if a walk doesn't work, I will do stair climbing and report tomorrow.

Hap... Fri, 1 Jan 2010 12:06:35 EST I Don't Like Being a Cliche I am not one for New Year resolutions so I am starting TODAY to recover from weeks of giving away (not "losing" because I was actively involved in my behavior) control over eating desserts and cookies every day .....Yesterday afternoon I finished the ginger cookies (my grandmother's recipe) that my DH requested (along with butter cookies) for the holidays and as much as I love those cookies, I was sad that I have lost so much discipline. In fact, that seems to have been my continuing theme th... Thu, 31 Dec 2009 14:03:37 EST Catching Up I think I have come out of the work undertow for a while - my last blog was a little over 2 weeks ago, feels like longer ...! In any case, I have been exercising 4 to 5 days per week at challenging resistance levels and have been good about avoiding sugary desserts except for Thanksgiving and the day after. I have just come in from a long walk with lots of 'resistance' from a stiff wind here in VT - my ears feel frozen (!) but it was bracing and fun, I never tire of the scenery. I think I a... Sat, 28 Nov 2009 15:03:48 EST Wednesday No dessert - 292
Exercise - Deliberate day off

Wednesday was a good day - took the time to have lunch with two old friends that I have not seen in ages. I should do that more often. Thu, 12 Nov 2009 06:19:53 EST Day to Day No dessert - 292
Exercise - 292

I achieved both goals for another day. I must avoid my "70s" diet mindset that if I am good for a few days, I should immediately drop pounds. I know that weight loss doesn't work that way and I have actually been following a healthy eating plan and exercise routine for 5 years now, but it is so hard to let go of mindsets that were ingrained years ago when "low fat" diets were the rage. Sad to think that I have been concerne... Wed, 11 Nov 2009 06:25:25 EST Veterans' Day Thank You 652 652

This day is more meaningful than ever to me this year. I think it is because I am coming face to face with the reality of the profound importance of individual freedom at a time in our country's existence when the government's "presence" in our lives is increasing every day. Those who fought for us throughout history did so in order to protect our freedom - we must work every day to preserve it.

652 652 Wed, 11 Nov 2009 06:17:27 EST Consistency, Consistency No dessert - 292
Exercise - 292

Yesterday was a good day for lots of reasons. Food and exercise were on track, but also DH and I tripped over a bunch of photos of our wedding and five-year anniversary and trip to Scotland/England several years ago. It was fun to appreciate those experiences again in a visual way and oh, my, how different I looked 9 years ago - I still had contacts rather than glasses, my hair was relatively thick (not thinning as it has b... Tue, 10 Nov 2009 06:56:15 EST A Challenge Met (Finally!) No dessert - 292
Exercise - 292

Sunday was a glorious, sunny, warm day here in New England. Just perfect. After chores in the morning, we visited friends for lunch (healthy salad with grilled chicken and sparkling water!) and I had plenty of time for my walk in the afternoon before we went for dinner with DH's family (caesar salad with grilled chicken with sparkling water!) AND ..... DH's sister had baked him a french vanilla cake with strawberry filling ... Mon, 9 Nov 2009 06:26:00 EST Recap Saturday No dessert - not accomplished - had strawberry licorice at the movies!
Exercise - 292

Food was acceptable except for the licorice. The walk was great but done a bit too late in the afternoon as it was just about dark on my way back - not good when one must walk at the side of the road!

I am back down 2 pounds so now I am 2 pounds above maintenance weight .... where I had been for several months, unfortunately. I will walk again today and strive for a day... Sun, 8 Nov 2009 10:05:52 EST Lopsided Progress No dessert - check
Exercise - no

Ack. My food yesterday was right on target but I did not make it to the elliptical because I worked a bit late and then spent the evening with DH watching the History channel !

It is a gorgeous autumn day in my part of New England - I am working now, then headed with DH to a local winery and lunch - upon return to home, I WILL take a walk along my neighborhood route that includes a series of true hills - it is a good workout but at t... Sat, 7 Nov 2009 08:33:16 EST On Track with Forgoing Desserts No dessert - check
Exercise - no

Fund raiser for a congressional candidate this evening so no elliptical. But my eating was fine today with no dessert!

No extracurricular activities tonight so the elliptical it is for sure today! Fri, 6 Nov 2009 06:14:06 EST Amost Back to Day 1 No dessert - check
Exercise - no

Company dinner with our bankers last night ran longer than anticipated so I didn't feel like exercising when I got home after 9pm. Food was good for the day though - well prepared trout for dinner with cauliflower and a starter of beet salad (again!) and one glass of merlot. Breakfast and lunch were the same as usual plus a banana in the afternoon.

I know that a year ago I would have jumped on the elliptical no matter what time of ni... Thu, 5 Nov 2009 06:28:09 EST Day 2 of One Day at a Time Not so successful - my DH and I went out for dinner at our favorite place after we voted and while I had a healthy meal of filet mignon accompanied by summer squash and red pepper, with a starter of beet salad, I also had a piece of chocolate torte. AND when we were at home later, I did not exercise. Ack.

That said, I had a pleasant evening with my husband, whom I do not frequently see until later in the evening because he is self-employed, so all told, it was a good day.
<B... Wed, 4 Nov 2009 06:14:49 EST On to Day 2 ...... No sugary treats - check
Work out on stationary bike - check

Thanks for the comments, guys, I appreciate it.

I have never been one to journal my food intake - one of the reasons that I liked South Beach so much was that Dr. A. said that you didn't have to measure, track, etc., just eat the "right" things ..... his original "theory" has undergone some change since the early '90s but his approach was just right for me at the time. I am very good about my basic food n... Tue, 3 Nov 2009 06:30:24 EST Accountability Time! Oh, my. I just read my August entry - it is now November 2, THREE months later, and I haven't improved my laxity with treats nor upped my exercise. I have had enough - this morning the scale was up another 2 pounds from where it was in August - this cannot go on. During this period I have been setting "goals" for myself but honestly I have approached it in the wrong manner - I can't look ahead two weeks (sadly) - I have to take this one day at a time. So today, I will not have dessert after d... Mon, 2 Nov 2009 06:53:08 EST The psychology of it all ..... Ok, so in early May DH and I had a one-week vacation in Aruba - great food, even greater desserts (love the mousse), pina coladas by the pool every day, etc., etc. Ok, home with 2 extra pounds and I STILL have them - ACK! I am missing the discipline I used to have - my older dog died in late May and I just didn't care about discipline for a few weeks but that was in May - this is August 1 !! I have developed this concept that if I am "good" for a few meals (not days, meals!) then I have "ear... Sat, 1 Aug 2009 13:49:37 EST My Own "Streak" I have been exactly at goal weight - not an ounce different positive or negative - for the past four days. I weigh first thing in the a.m. Yes, I know that weight fluctuates during the day - I don't mean that - I'm talking about the weight I see at the time I usually weigh every day. I can't recall the number ever being the exact same figure for this many days in a row - odd. Tue, 31 Mar 2009 20:36:44 EST Weekend Eating Well, we went away for the weekend and I had one "treat" every day (a muffin one day, ice cream the next and pie the last day) and not enough exercise because of the cold/snow. Not a good combination. This morning I was up a bit on the scale but still below my usual maintenance weight. This is what happens and I know it - limit the treats!!! Tue, 3 Mar 2009 21:01:34 EST A Good Day I got a decent night's sleep last night and used the elliptical and stationary bike tonight while eating right and drinking my water. One day at a time. Thu, 26 Feb 2009 19:22:34 EST Work is Easing up Things should be less hectic after tomorrow. Have been eating right and drinking water but not enough exercise or sleep. Still below my usual weight but I know one day it will just shoot up a few pounds so I'm not getting too fond of the current numbers! Wed, 25 Feb 2009 18:09:50 EST Hanging in .... Work is still very intense and will be until the end of the month - then there should be some breathing room. Exercise is suffering during this period - only two actual work outs in the past two weeks because I have been getting home too late or bringing work home with me. Am still eating right and drinking my water - weight is lower than normal which I expect will change when I have more leisure time to feel like eating desserts!! Sat, 21 Feb 2009 08:53:30 EST Keepin' on Food and exercise have been good, plenty of water, just too much work this time of year - not getting enough sleep. Weight is +/- one pound of maintenance weight for the second straight week, so there is hope! I will definitely think twice before I let myself have too many treats over the Thanksgiving - Christmas period - I do not want to feel that way again!! Mon, 9 Feb 2009 20:18:50 EST Tuesday Today was a good day although I didn't eat my breakfast until about 10:30 and had to take home my salad for dinner. Had all my water and 41 minutes on the stationary bike and NO sugary dessert!! This morning I was actually below my maintenance weight, which doesn't happen very often .... I'll take it when I see it! Tue, 27 Jan 2009 21:21:37 EST Monday Still at goal maintenance weight, food good, exercise good, water good AND no sugary dessert today! Mon, 26 Jan 2009 17:57:48 EST Saturday The scale has moved again and I am back to my maintenance goal. Haven't seen this number on the scale since before Thanksgiving. I am "back on track" with food and exercise (water is never a problem) - one day at a time. Sat, 24 Jan 2009 10:42:37 EST Thursday/Friday Thursday was a good day with food and water. Didn't exercise because we went out for dinner - I had fish and vegetables and literally three bites of dessert. I haven't ever really been able to follow the SB "three bite" rule for desserts but I managed it last night.

Today has been on track with food, water and exercise (45 minutes between the elliptical and stationary bike) AND no sugary dessert!! Fri, 23 Jan 2009 18:56:01 EST Wednesday On a roll here - food good, water good, exercise 48 minutes, NO dessert! Wed, 21 Jan 2009 19:26:22 EST Tuesday Excellent day ! Non-fat yogurt with fruit and walnuts for breakfast; salad with boiled ham, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, chickpeas, dark leafy greens, grapes and grape tomatoes for lunch; whole grain cereal with 1% milk for dinner (love cereal). 43 minutes on the stationary bike at level 14. Lots of water. Somehow I've stopped having my morning and afternoon snacks - not sure what's going on there ..... NO dessert - yay! Tue, 20 Jan 2009 19:46:36 EST Sunday/Monday Sunday was another travel day - food pretty good but had a cream soup for dinner. NO dessert though!

Today has been a good day - food on track, 53 minutes between the elliptical and the stationary bike, plenty of water - NO dessert for me today! I am still thinking about P1 but I'm not crazy about the idea - just wish these 3 pounds would disappear because I am doing all the right things! Patience! Mon, 19 Jan 2009 20:10:13 EST So Far So Good.... Saturday is going well - food on track, exercise, water .... check. I had a milk shake yesterday as we were in the car for 3.5 hours and I needed diversion! Too bad that I still think of food as a reward .... one day at a time, I guess. I have been really, really consistent and good up until this holiday season and I lost the discipline then for some (no) reason. If the scale hasn't gone down by Monday a.m., it's on to a modified P1 for 1 week to see if that helps. Sat, 17 Jan 2009 14:50:32 EST Update Food has been good today, plenty of water, too. Probably no exercise tonight as my DH and I are heading out for dinner - planning on salad, filet mignon and asparagus - flavored tea for dessert, yay!

Post Dinner Update - I had salmon with asparagus and the flavored tea but also shared dessert with DH. It was a nice evening. Thu, 15 Jan 2009 18:06:32 EST Update Exercised yesterday and today - yay! Food on track both days - NO dessert! Scale not moving - still up 2 pounds from maintenance weight. I gave myself 2 weeks so I'll have to see if P1.5 is appropriate on Friday if some progress isn't made scale-wise. Wed, 14 Jan 2009 20:53:43 EST Monday Sunday was a good day with 40+minutes of exercise and eating right until dinner at DH's parent's house - home made pizza and cake - sent the scale up a couple of pounds this morning - impossible to have gained 2 pounds from a few pieces of pizza so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Monday has been a good day with SB P2 food and 40 minutes on the stationary bike - NO dessert! Mon, 12 Jan 2009 19:53:26 EST Update Thursday was a good day - ate right, 40 minutes on the elliptical, NO sugary dessert!

Friday, my DH and I went out for a nice dinner - I had red wine (1 glass), swordfish (sauce on the side, thank you) with grilled squash and SHARED a sinful peanut butter mousse cake dessert with him. It was great!

The scale isn't really moving no matter how good I eat or how consistently I exercise, so I just need to be patient.

Note to self - be patient!!

Ok...i... Sat, 10 Jan 2009 08:50:39 EST Keepin' the Streak Going! Today was another day when I drank my water, did 40 minutes on the stationary bike (resistance 14, random program), ate a clean P2 and NO sugary dessert!! One day at a time! Wed, 7 Jan 2009 21:33:47 EST Another Good Day Ate right and exercised for 40 minutes and NO sugary dessert! yay! Tue, 6 Jan 2009 21:05:51 EST A Good Day Today was a solid day - eating was clean; had a good work out on the stationary bike, and NO sugary dessert!! Onward to tomorrow. Mon, 5 Jan 2009 22:39:50 EST Do What I Say, Not What I Do I haven't heard anyone use this phrase in years but it sprang to mind today when I look at my last (only) two blog entries. I KNOW what to do and I have done it for literally years. What was different about this holiday season to make me think that I could treat myself every day and not gain? Dunno. I do know that disciplne is key for me - once I start to say "yes" on a regular basis, it becomes harder and harder to say "no" - (note to self - please review first blog again!)!! Yesterday was a... Sun, 4 Jan 2009 09:52:18 EST Reading the Adventures of Dietgirl Blog Oh, my. Yesterday, I saw a Spark blog about a book by Shauna Reid with the above title. I clicked on the link to her blog and was addicted to reading it periodically yesterday - what a great story she has - such determination and honesty (and frustration) in describing her issues with food, mainly chocolate (which is a big weakness of mine). More inspiration to stick with the basics - good food and exercise on a regular basis, treats only occasionally - must keep that front and center when I ... Thu, 1 Jan 2009 14:14:35 EST The Girl Who Couldn't Say "NO"! This is the first year since I reached my goal weight that I have "let myself go" during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day - the result is a gain of 2 to 3 pounds. This is a serious thing for me as I am very short (5'0") and three pounds really makes a difference. I know what the issue has been - I eat my fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy, lean meat, whole grains, etc. and I exercise regularly - my weakness is desserts - which I have had regularly and it shows! I am beco... Wed, 31 Dec 2008 09:27:19 EST
