I got to the top and reached into my pocket where the camera was stowed and found it disturbingly flat. I never even sat down to enjoy the view, eager to search the trail for my camera.

It was brand new, I had yet to take my first photo with it. It was red and should be a little easier to spot, but no luck. I had crossed 15 fallen trees on the trail and moved another and figured it would be on the ground at one o... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 02:26:56 EST "You Are My Inspiration" http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4361623 There's a new gal who has been at water aerobics for a couple of weeks now, a 50-something who, like me, does exercises in the water before and/or after water aerobics. Monday she was chatting with the water aerobics teacher, then she looked at me. "How much have you lost?"

"79 pounds on a good day," I replied.

After class I told her about my exercise routine and how she could check her calorie burn and calorie intake on SP. She said she'd look it up.

Today I'... Thu, 14 Jul 2011 04:01:11 EST Dr. visit "I almost didn't recognize you!" http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4307150 My allergies have been playing up and we are headed into the worst time of the year for me. After missing Boot Camp due to lack of sleep from sneezing, sinus pressure, and so forth I decided I had to go to the Urgent Care Clinic. Back in 1988 I was exposed to long term carbon monoxide poisoning which has trashed my lungs and any post nasal drip usually goes right to bronchitis and I was showing the first signs and wanted to nip that in the bud so it wouldn't interfere with working out.
... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 20:27:28 EST "I've been watching you": an Encounter With a Complete Stranger http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4154970 "I've been watching you, and you've lost weight!" I was getting dressed after my swim (and Boot Camp, rowing, elliptical, and treadmill sessions) and a gal passing though the locker room made to observation. Actually, I've been getting that a lot.

The other day a gal sat down to use the computer next to me and said she knew me from some where after she heard me speak. She asked me about school and work and finally she realized I babysit for people she knows. "I didn't recognize yo... Sun, 10 Apr 2011 05:30:31 EST The First Hike of the Season and It's Sequel http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4111708 Today the siren song of hiking lured me to City Creek Canyon, a narrow road formerly open to cars, but now a mecca for walking, jogging, and biking (traffic is allowed on alternating days, but is light). I thought I'd see how the trails are coming along for hiking season (how much snow and mud).

I headed off the first connection to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, figuring if it was bad I'd turn around after a hundred yards. There was a little mud here and there, but otherwise it wa... Wed, 23 Mar 2011 03:32:03 EST Exorcising the Ghost of Fat Girl Past http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3986058 I was watching the weigh in of the teams on the Biggest Loser when it struck me: I was identifying with the the 280 pound gal instead of her 220 pound partner. I'm going on 8 months in my weight loss journey and on a good day I've lost 59 pounds (just past the 20% of my starting weight mark) and dropped from the ranks of the morbidly obese.

My concept of what I look like is very confused. Some of the gals I think look like me, or at least Morbidly Obese Me range between 220 and 330... Thu, 3 Feb 2011 05:57:10 EST 118 Changes Since I've Noticed Since Losing 45 Pounds in 5 months. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3794796 1. The long sleeves on sweaters and coats have gotten longer, to the tips of my fingers or further.

2. Sitting in the chair at the waiting room wasn't a tight, uncomfortable squeeze.

3. I feel lazy and guilty if I don't get to the gym or go on a long hike.

4. I can swim for an hour without stopping.

5. Getting out of the car isn't awkward.

6. I'm not always the slowest person when walking a distance from the car to the store or other dest... Fri, 19 Nov 2010 19:36:02 EST I tried Zumba tonight. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3778362 I've watched them going at it in the group exercise room a few times in the last week and thought it looked might be fast paced and tricky to get the steps right, turning the wrong way and getting mixed up generally. It also looked fast and I didn't know whether I could keep up.

So today I screwed up my courage and went in. I was afraid of looking like an ungainly blimp, but actually a lot of the moves were straight out of belly dancing, which I did a little over 20 years ago, so I... Thu, 11 Nov 2010 22:13:43 EST My New Wardrobe (Sort of) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3767140 I was trying to pull out elements of my pirate costume to wear to Boot Camp on Halloween Eve when I came across a box of clothes put away when they got a little too tight. Inside was an old leather jacket in need of some repairs, 7 pairs of pants and 2 pairs of shorts. Other recently rediscovered items include a Victorian style coat which was a little too snug through the hips, a jacket infinitely wide in the hips, but the lining was too tight at the wrist, and a favorite dress. There are oth... Sun, 7 Nov 2010 01:43:44 EST Weights and Measures http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3729901 Woohoo! I had an all inclusive, intense Last Chance Workout today for team weigh ins. I started out with double cardio. 30 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes on the arm cycle, 15 minutes on the elliptical, 15 minutes on the rowing, then started over again! 25 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes arm cycle, 12 minutes elliptical, 12 minutes rowing.

Then I did the ab machine, went over to the group x room and did 2 lengths of the room in lunges. Then it was downstairs for the calf, c... Thu, 21 Oct 2010 00:36:50 EST Finally! The scale is moving again! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3721960 It's been a frustrating couple of weeks. The scale would not budge. Well it did, but not in the right way.

I've been doing less strength training and land based exercise because of my knee, and I have an appointment tomorrow morning with the orthopedic doctor I saw after the previous knee injury. I really don't want to lose momentum! My primary care doctor said it was just arthritis, but he's an internal medicine expert, and I think that seeing the knee expert is just a good idea. ... Sun, 17 Oct 2010 22:27:18 EST I'm a gadget geek! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3708379 Well I finally did it! I took money out the fund to build my storage shed (it's not going to happen this late in the year anyway) and bought myself a GoWear Fit, manufactured by the same company that makes the BodyBugg and another version marketed in Great Britain.

I already have a Sportline watch, which gives me my heart rate, tells me calories burned and how much time in each zone. I recently discovered that I could use it in the water, but it doesn't like the change from water ... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 17:41:55 EST Over hill, over dale, I have hit the dusty trail - Hiking to Dog Lake http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3673042 The hiking season is coming to a close too fast! I've been wanting to get back into hiking for ages, and it is one of the reasons I want to lose weight and get in shape.

Recently an old hiking buddy died from pancreatic cancer and it has been a great opportunity to mull over old times while doing what he liked best. In his obituary it stated "he never saw a mountain he didn't want to climb". He can tag along in spirit, and next spring I'll get his widow hiking too. I had a chance ... Mon, 27 Sep 2010 03:46:31 EST Goodby to the 260's, Look out 240's! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3660168 After my swim, I weighed in at 258.4! That makes 2.6 pounds since last weeks weigh in. I wasn't expecting much, because I anticipated water retention, so I'm totally delighted.

I'm babysitting Robbie and the twins. I was hoping to watch the Biggest Loser and ride my recumbent bike, but on my way to the gym I was asked to sit so Robert and Aileene could go out to eat for Robert's birthday. But I suppose I can hop on when I get home, or maybe plug in an exercise DVD.

It's ... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 23:45:09 EST The First 10%! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3644778 As of yesterday, I've now lost 29 pounds, which makes 10% of my starting weight. I'm so excited. I can fit into my best dress again (I checked last night, because I need to go to a funeral and would like to look nice). A lovely Victorian style coat with a capelet and and passementerie trim now fits for the first time! My pants don't ride low at the back of the waist like they did when I first bought them.

Every time I go to the gym with the digital scale, I'm eager to weigh in. Som... Thu, 16 Sep 2010 17:35:33 EST I've reached a new low! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3632163 Today I went to the gym after eating a hearty meal of chile with tomatoes and onions, so I didn't hold out much hope of showing a weight loss for the week being reflected in my weigh in. 265.3, not bad, down .5 pound, actually.

So off to the elliptical and treadmill for my first land based cardio in a week. Then I did 10 minutes of exercises from water aerobics and swam. I only swam .75 mile today - I was very slow and decided to forgo the last .25 mile.

On the way out I... Sun, 12 Sep 2010 23:46:45 EST Bored at the Podiatrist http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3626406 I made it to the podiatrist today, which is good, because the toenail began to drain a little. He took a look at my blue toe and proposed drilling a small hole through my nail with a Dremel tool, but the appropriate attachment wasn't there, so he bored a hole through with a a scalpel tip (think of starting a fire with a bow and a stick and you get the idea). He drained all the fluid and now it almost matches my healthy toe.

He said that the nail was firmly attached, so it will stay... Fri, 10 Sep 2010 21:22:41 EST Later - Boot Camp http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3623802 I did fine at Boot Camp. The only exercises I skipped were running up and down the stairs (I did stepping on the step platform in the aerobics room - I don't want to cause further injury while I'm healing), and a stretch requiring kneeling on one leg at a time (my knee and shin are still swollen even though the bruising is going away).

The toenail turned blue after a 6 hour hike on a very steep trail. Coming down, my foot repeatedly jammed against the front of the boot, causing a h... Thu, 9 Sep 2010 23:43:37 EST Recovering From the Hike to Alexander Basin http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3623057 The blue toenail is starting to get more swollen, so I've made an appointment for Friday with a podiatrist. I read online that a podiatrist might be able to save a blue nail (if it's not too late, I wish I had known sooner).

Boot Camp is scheduled for later tonight, though it's uncertain whether it will take place. The sign up sheet wasn't out, but the guys at the desk say Anthony is teaching so we'll see. I'll take my swim bag, just in case. I tried on my gym shoes to see how the ...
