VEGANFITLADY's SparkPeople Blog VEGANFITLADY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community So much to catch up on, but I'll start with yesterday Yesterday I completed a half marathon! I had almost given up on going to it because I got really sick two weeks out, and the week before the race I had walked 27 miles in 5 days during my volunteering at Girls Rock Camp (not to mention was basically working 12 hour days there).

It took me a long time to finish, but better than expected. The first 4 miles were terrible and I thought about giving up, but I felt really good around the fifth mile and was super encouraged. I was so happ... Mon, 20 Jul 2015 13:35:59 EST my first inspirational speech! I had another amazing weekend as food coordinator at Ladies Rock Camp! I actually did a little speech and performance there, I think it might speak for itself, check it out!
8

Let me know if you have any questions about it! Wed, 11 Mar 2015 14:26:20 EST too busy to blog until now Wow, it seems like life has been a bit of a whirlwind lately.

Luckily, today I am on the last week of Winter Break from school and unable to work out because I had an upper endoscopy with some biopsies (to check on my GERD I've had most my life) and am finding myself with a lot of free time and no plans for it.

There is so much catching up to do. In October I turned 30 and ran my second 5k the weekend before. I got a personal best.

Before the New Year, I deci... Tue, 13 Jan 2015 10:35:18 EST Amazing bloodwork and my first 5k First of all, I finally asked my doctor for a copy of my blood work from April 2013 before I tried to improve my health to my last results after I did improve my health in May 2014. It's pretty amazing to look at. In 2013 my total cholesterol was 209 which is borderline high. Now it is 169 which is 40 away from being borderline! In 2013 my triglycerides were at 106 and now they are 72! My HDL (healthy cholesterol) was 40 which is one number away from being too low. Now it is 59. My LDL (bad c... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 16:17:57 EST my other blog Well folks, I have a hard time remembering to blog here because I write my own blog on my own website to keep up on.
Anyhow, I just wanted to share this specific entry I wrote about how learning how to run is such a positive thing for me...and how it's changing my life for the better.

ow-running-as-a-vegan-might-save-my-li
fe-somehow/
Thu, 12 Jun 2014 15:36:24 EST Good medical news!! So I had my physical at the beginning of May and with graduation and other things going on it took me until yesterday morning to get fasted blood work done.

At the time of my physical my doctor was debating whether she recommends me trying to lose weight still. At first she was telling me I shouldn't try as hard to be losing weight and I should only be losing weight if it's happening on it's own as some kind of random thing. She kept saying she doesn't want me starving myself. I t... Sat, 31 May 2014 11:48:22 EST My year Sparkiversary today !! 503
Today marks a year since I committed to my health, fitness, and wellbeing. It's also a year since I committed to being fully vegan (although I had done that without success before).

I am not really in the mood to write something too original today since I wrote something on my facebook about it as well. So I'm going to post some of what I wrote there here, since none of you that read my blog are on my facebook (you're free to sparkmessage me and request a face... Sun, 27 Apr 2014 10:44:41 EST It's been awhile I want to share a link to this new online vegan women's fitness magazine that I am featured in.
I've been hesitant to post it too many places because I am sort of upset that the editors made a grammatical error in the headline that I didn't write, but trying to let go of that. The story I wrote is on page 66. It's a link to a pdf and I'm not sure if it'll work.

nt/uploads/2014/04/001DefinitionForLad
ies_small.pdf
If it doesn't, ... Fri, 11 Apr 2014 10:22:40 EST more milestones Today I was like, hmm I wonder what percentage of body weight I've lost so far. I even made a random guess that it was 1/3 or 33% and I was pretty close! Currently 29% but in 3 lbs (when I've lost 70 lbs!!) It'll be that!

So I'll be 1/3 of my original weight! wow!

I think I will also have to go clothing shopping! I hope.

Yeah!

this was my prom dress I wore over 10 years ago! ... Wed, 11 Dec 2013 15:11:53 EST Best day yesterday I wanted to blog about this at the end of yesterday, but I had already blogged one blog and I wanted to get the sparkpoints for it today...and not right 2 blogs in one day.

Anyways, I had a major breakthrough with my running ability yesterday! 312

I decided, upon opening runkeeper, the app that I use with my workouts outside, to set my workout as a run instead of a walk for the first time. I've only been doing run/walk intervals for the past few months, but... Sun, 8 Dec 2013 16:36:54 EST update with a silly personal story at the end that's an optional read well I am writing a blog because I would write it in a status, but it'll probably be a bit longer than that.

As of this morning at like 1 am, I am no longer on my no binge eating streak :( I was having insomnia and felt really hungry. And then I went to eat something but couldn't figure out what I wanted to eat, and still felt too hungry and...yeah I ate too much.

I think it'll be okay as long as I commit to avoiding it the rest of the day, tomorrow, etc again. I know I ... Sat, 7 Dec 2013 11:01:22 EST Progress report ;)
well, it's sort of silly looking but here is my progress so far! So proud of myself and I'm back on track!! Mon, 2 Dec 2013 21:05:50 EST I haven't written a blog in awhile and I think I should I'm doing pretty well. Getting over a cold though, which had prevented me from working out as intensely as I would have liked for a week. During that week I started making green smoothies and eating more fruit, and I am keeping up with an even larger than previous (even though I'm a vegan) fruit and veggie intake. Which is awesome.

I'm feeling a lot better but am still struggling to run as much as I could before, because there is still some stuff in my I'm trying to ta... Sun, 1 Dec 2013 20:47:34 EST Running progress As a child even, I thought I was doomed to only be good at running very short distances, like running bases in softball or 50 yard dashes (or whatever amount of yards they were) in gym classes...

I was lucky if I could even run an entire lap on the track without feeling like I was going to die.

However, I think I am proof that if you put your mind to it and really want to improve at something, you can do it.

Even if it took me until I was 29 years old, I am n... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 12:49:16 EST Happy Halloween!
here is a picture of me as a witch on a broom (taken at a local farm) earlier in the month

and my picture of my jack-o-lantern I made tonight. Some of you may recognize it, it's Totoro from the Studio Ghibli film "My Neighbor Totoro"

Tomorrow I plan on making vegan ranch spiced roasted pumpkin seeds with the seeds I have! Yum.... Thu, 31 Oct 2013 21:21:17 EST batteries and scales, pilates dvds and balls, new goals and steps, oh my! a bit of advice: if you have an electronic, battery scale, don't forget to change the batteries at least every few years! I don't think I've ever changed the batteries on mine, and I've had it at least 4 years. Granted, I didn't use it for a long time so it may have lasted longer, but still. I was wondering why my weight was fluctuating so much. A week or two ago the scale showed up after being stuck on 179.4 to 175, and then every time I went to check it (about once a day, which I realize is... Wed, 30 Oct 2013 11:33:30 EST It's my 6 month sparkiversary today (I started April 27!) 516 516 516
And I am so proud of myself lately.
It's the perfect time to reflect on how well I am doing since starting, and there were several surprises that proved that this past week.

273 273 273
On Friday I went for for a checkup with my physician. That is all I can say! Today was SUCH a great day!

224

I reached 2 big goals/milestones that I didn't really realize I had had until I achieved them!

192 363

One being I lost 4 lbs making my weight 175--and I've known in the back of my mind that the weight on my driver's license I got when I was about 17 years old has been stuck on that ever since...myself knowing I weighed way more than that starting about 2 years later after I got t... Fri, 18 Oct 2013 23:19:57 EST have a new plan I'm just not feeling limiting my food right now. It's not even like I'm eating unhealthily, it's just lately I'm telling myself I'd rather not be hungry and having to resist food that I want to eat. Especially after losing 55 lbs from when I started, I feel like I'm frustrated with having to keep up with my strict meal plans and lately I've been feeling like maintaining it would be okay if I could eat more. But I still want to lose weight.

So today I was working out for 70 minutes ... Wed, 16 Oct 2013 21:13:39 EST Determined to get back on track this week! One day at a time Well, today was my first day vowing to get back on track with my eating habits. For awhile depression was getting the best of me and my food habits (eating too much and emotional eating) were getting the best of me. My mood has greatly improved recently, but for awhile I was sort of stuck in some unhealthy habits I started while in the bad mood, and it was difficult to break. But today I was like, enough, and made a plan.

First on my plan was making sure I'd have plenty of things t... Sun, 13 Oct 2013 20:27:00 EST Trying to turn things around and starting to succeed again! Well, for the past 3 weeks or so I've been having a difficult time.
It took me awhile to realize what I was experiencing was actually my depression coming back and affecting me. 198 I have been losing interest in a lot of things I normally want to do, and also things that usually make me happy or joyful weren't having any effect whatsoever. 46

To make matters worse, some of my unhealthy eating habits started to come back. There were several days where ... Wed, 25 Sep 2013 10:57:53 EST My transformation this far!
1st picture--basically my starting point minus about 7 lbs
2nd picture: minus about 25 lbs??
3rd picture- Minus 52 lbs!!

I can't believe how far I've come. I find myself admiring my arms in the mirror which I've never done in my life really...haha.

So excited to see this visual! Omg I'm doing it! Sun, 8 Sep 2013 17:59:55 EST I'm way past due for a blog entry Some exciting things are happening:
School is starting again, my last full year before I get my associate's degree...
I have lost 50 lbs basically. Woohoo! This was my original goal but I'm trying to keep going!
My mom bought me some nice new clothes for the fall! I now wear a medium shirt and size 12 pants (that are quickly getting big on me as well!)
I have been doing good with trying to do more creative things daily. I am drawing a lot for my new blog.
Which brings... Thu, 5 Sep 2013 14:04:08 EST menstruation blues? 17
I haven't been feeling taking to the blog writing as of lately. But I'm forcing myself to do it now, I think it'll feel good.
252

42
I've kind of been in a bad mood for the past few weeks. I think that's because I'm out of school on a short break (I finished my last Summer course- Macroeconomics- with a B though yay!) and am not doing enough or have enough to do with my time. I really need work or school to feel like I'm doing... Wed, 28 Aug 2013 11:00:25 EST Pushing forward without motivation or particular enthusiasm Well, I was feeling unmotivated and unenthusiastic for awhile lately. But that didn't stop me from pushing forward. I still worked out to meet my goals, even if I had to work a little harder towards the end of the week so I'd meet my 1400 calories burned goal I set for my weeks a long time ago...since I haven't been doing bigger workout as often, it makes it more of a challenge, but I haven't missed the goal yet. If it's something I am capable of, why should I not do it?

My eatin... Mon, 19 Aug 2013 11:07:49 EST get running app updates, I missed at least 2 days of blogs about it :P Okay, so on Monday I finally started week 2. Week one was starting to get too easy and even though I was scared to move on I knew I had to. The first run of week 2 was more difficult to breathe with, and more of a challenge, but I did it. I ran pretty slow overall though, and didn't do the greatest time wise even though I was running longer.

Today though of week 2 (2nd day) was much better! I managed to beat my record for pace on runkeeper (running in the background). Since I had b... Wed, 14 Aug 2013 19:45:43 EST day #6 of get running app! yay! Well it's day 6, I just finished my second round of week 1. I think I may actually be ready for week 2! Today was really good, it's like everything fell into place, the funniest thing is, I had such a good workout even though my legs and knees were pretty sore.

Basically I figured out how to run at a steady, consistent (and slower) pace. But being slower meant that I didn't start out extra fast and get progressively slower over time. Instead, I was able to keep steady throughout. ... Sat, 3 Aug 2013 19:05:45 EST day #5 of Get Running Well, I feel like I might be stuck on the week 1 routine for awhile until I can learn to not get so winded. That's okay by me though, as long as I am improving.

Nothing really all that new to report though. Except that I didn't feel like dying as much.

I really bad back/shoulder pain yesterday and the day before, but it was gone when I woke up this morning, so I was very happy. I think it's mostly the way I sleep and maybe lack of sleep, I hadn't been sleeping well the l... Thu, 1 Aug 2013 17:14:23 EST day #4 of Get Running Well, I didn't have time to run yesterday because I ended up getting a haircut with my mom. Here's my new look!

with the curls still drying

and all dry

Anyhow, back to the running I did today. Well, I definitely didn't feel ready to increase the amount of time spent running in the second week's routine. Even though the... Tue, 30 Jul 2013 19:28:01 EST so close to my original goal of losing just 50 lbs As I wrote yesterday, I'm 1 lb away from losing 40 lbs since starting, and that means only 10 lbs away from losing 50. That's what my doctor said I had to lose...but I want to go further.

Since I'm so close to my original final goal, but it doesn't reflect my ultimate goal now I decided I might change my weight loss ticker on my sparkpage/message board posts to reflect how much I really want to lose.

It's a little daunting that I may still have 70 lbs to lose (I'm not 1... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 11:28:58 EST Awesome day I woke up this morning and was 4 lbs lighter than last week, I guess learning to run is paying off. I'm now at 195 lbs and am 1 pound away from losing 40 lbs so far! woohoo!

I went to a state park today in Jamestown RI and it was really awesome. It's partly the location of the movie Moonrise Kingdom, if you're familiar with it. The movie is by Wes Anderson...I really liked it and it's been playing on HBO lately. I really wanted to go there. So I did...

Here's a picture ... Sun, 28 Jul 2013 18:29:43 EST my doctor's appointment yesterday! Saw my doctor for a checkup yesterday. The scale there said 198 lbs! I was stressing out beforehand because the scale there always says I weigh more than mine, and was worried it wouldn't show up that I'm under 200 lbs but it did! yay

There was a resident that did most of my appointment, she was very nice and more accepting of me talking more about whatever than my doctor who is straight to the point haha.

Everyone (including the medical assistant who saw me first) was c... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 12:15:56 EST Day #3 of the Get Running App! It was raining lightly, but that didn't stop me although it almost did.

Instead of being horrible though, I think being out there in the rain is even more awesome than when it's sunny. It was so refreshing and I couldn't tell how much I was sweating. It also couldn't hurt that it's somewhere in the 60s or 70s temperature-wise.

I don't think it was solely the rain though that made me feel like I was improving. I think my body is starting to get used to it. It's still hard... Fri, 26 Jul 2013 11:08:18 EST Day 2 of the Get Running app So yesterday was my rest day from body was pretty sore from running the day before. I did my strength training instead. I used a new strength training workout from Sparkpeople's exercise generator...the runner's workout or whatever it's called. Seems good although some of the exercise demos are confusing for me...I have difficulty translating someone else doing an exercise or stretch from looking at them and then copying it with my body as it is, so I hope I'm not doing the exerc... Wed, 24 Jul 2013 14:29:22 EST Becoming a runner. Day #1
My new workout clothes! The top is actually a size large...I bought the xl at first but it was too big. I wore it today and am still wearing it because it's comfy and cute. 244

Well I took the plunge and downloaded the "Get Running" training app for my iPhone. It had really good reviews and was cheap and seemed like it wouldn't be too difficult.

I tried it shortly after I got home from ... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 16:54:24 EST officially under 200 lbs! Woohoo! I weighed in today and the scale read 199! Hurray! I'm getting so close to my original goal (that has been updated to be more now, but it still means something) of losing 50 lbs!! I actually see my doctor Friday, she'll be happy I'm sure.

Also, I got to go shopping today, I got a new workout outfit at Target...the xl shirt is actually too big for me so I have to go back and exchange it for a large!

I also tried on new bras because all my bras are way too big (probably sh... Sun, 21 Jul 2013 18:02:59 EST a really awesomely intense workout today I decided I needed to step up my treadmill routine a bit today. I planned to do 15 mins at my usual pace of 3.5 mph, but then decided to try 45 minutes at 4mph. And then a cool down at 3 mph for 5 mins and 2.5mph for another five.

I actually did not think I was going to be able to get through the 45 minutes at 4mph. I wanted to quit several times and was thinking to myself that I could change the time frames I had set for myself and go back to 3.5mph the rest of the time.
<... Fri, 19 Jul 2013 13:18:24 EST a then and now picture! at almost 3 months since starting my journey!!
personally, I can't really see much of a change looking at these two pictures except my face looks less puffy...but I do know there is a big change...I started out wearing size 18 pants and now fit into some size 14s! I'm not calling this a before and after picture because I still want to go much further to be at a healthy weight for my frame and height, but it's definitely a start and I'm loving my progress! I feel muc... Thu, 18 Jul 2013 17:06:06 EST Jumproping!
WOO! I decided to have some caffeine today for the first time in 3 months. I had black half decaf/half coconut regular coffee iced from dunkin donuts with stevia...not the best idea because I could only get through half of the small sized cup without getting wired...So I thought it would be a good idea to jump rope while my energy needed an outlet...and decided to take some pictures! yay photos of me doing something awe... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 17:52:21 EST this week Well this week was intense but really awesome.
My two highlights were starting a new class at school for the second part of the Summer session (which kind of sucks actually) and volunteering at Girls Rock! Camp!

For those that haven't heard of Girls Rock Camp before (there are various other local girls rock camps in select cities around the country and world, I help with the one in Rhode Island) it's a camp for girls (at the RI camp the age range is 11-17) where the girls com... Sat, 13 Jul 2013 21:05:47 EST a bit excited! Well I'm super hyper right now when I was trying to settle down for bed a while ago haha.

It all started when I was trying to find a solution to my slightly baggy pants...

I found I fit in a belt that I had previously been frustrated with because it seemed like it'd be awhile before I fit in it...well now I wasn't frustrated...except I didn't really like the way my outfits were turning out with that combination of pants, shirt, and belt so I decided to look in this close... Tue, 9 Jul 2013 22:13:10 EST Time for a new blog entry 213
hey everyone!

11
I got really excited on the scale today (I switched my weigh in day to Sunday because it just makes more sense than Friday) because I am 200.4 lbs! That means most likely by next week I'll be under 200 lbs and have reached my second milestone for my goals. I've lost almost 34 lbs total since starting, and 4 lbs since the last time I weighed myself. I am quite excited and proud of myself.

42
I am a... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 11:10:53 EST achievement: fitting in a shirt I wore a lot in high school! I loved this shirt as a high schooler because I considered myself to be a vegetarian (at least most of the time). I still love it as a now vegan (all of the time). I'm mostly excited about it because I haven't been able to wear it for ages. It's now a bit roomy on me. It has some bleach or white paint stains on it, but otherwise it's perfect!
It's 13 years old! Mon, 1 Jul 2013 20:15:21 EST haven't written in a while 24
I guess I've been slightly uninspired about what to write.

386
Although, there's been a lot going on. I've been pretty busy. Also I don't feel like all my efforts to lose weight are so new and novel for me, so I guess I'm less excited to share them all. The good thing though is that I haven't given up. I'm still plugging on. In fact, the changes I've made have just become part of my daily routine/life now. So in a way, that's even better than t... Sun, 30 Jun 2013 19:52:36 EST Which Fitness Class is Right for You? -- quiz results I just took this quiz

ent_questions.asp?quizid=35
and want to save my results somewhere.

For you, exercise serves a preventive, therapeutic purpose. You want to maintain a strong core, decrease pain, and stay active and limber as you age so that you can live a healthy, independent life. You're more interested in maintaining long, lean muscles and good posture than running a marathon or benching heavy weights. There are many gr... Sat, 22 Jun 2013 14:32:27 EST I almost forgot today was my weigh in day This week has been a bit of a challenge for me.

I have been having to push myself more than usual to work out as much as I want to, and I also had some difficulty with limiting my calories. I mean, I was still not going over, but was eating more than I was before...mostly because my sleep schedule has changed and I'm staying up later and get hungry the longer I'm up.

I had managed to get my calories on the lower end for awhile and now they're on the mid to higher side ... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 14:52:03 EST first weight loss milestone reached I'm so excited and proud and happy! As of today I have lost 26 lbs since starting Sparkpeople in late April (the 27th to be exact)! This was my first goal I set. I now have a little less than 10 lbs to go until I'm under 200 lbs for the first time in as long as I can remember recently (my memory isn't the best and I haven't always weighed myself/known my weight/been to doctors)!

I'm doing much better with my amount of fat I eat, it's getting lower. Also, I ordered my vega one beca... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 17:53:36 EST check in 213
Let's see what I have to say here today.

243
According to sparkpeople it's been 46 days since I signed up. Unfortunately I kept forgetting to spin the sparkwheel even though I was actively using the site the first few days and it doesn't count those days as being "active."

194
Also because I use the sparkpeople app on my iphone sometimes I forget to save my 8 cups of water, but I've drank at least 8 cups every day... Tue, 11 Jun 2013 21:11:18 EST last night Last night I was mad at myself because right before bed I felt really hungry and went to have a snack but I was already at my fat intake limit...but really wanted a snack with fat in it. I ended up having a piece of rye bread with 1/4 avocado spread on it and some mrs. dash sprinkled on it, and some crackers. I didn't go over my calorie limit (though was close) but did go over my fat limit. I tried really hard not to get mad at myself, but I sort of did. I had been good about forgiving myself... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 11:31:00 EST some randomness I went to a new gastroenterologist yesterday. I haven't seen one since I was young. I saw a pediatric one until I turned 18. My doctor wanted me to see this one, because she's in the same building as she is and also because I've been on medication for GERD for as long as I can remember, and it isn't good to be on that class of meds longterm if unnecessary.

So she said to try seeing if I can be off the dexilant, and alternate with zantac and see if I can do with just that. If I ca... Sat, 8 Jun 2013 19:31:30 EST
