It is strange that at first we could feel the difference. I finally broke through a barrier that had stopped me since 1994. He has lost weight through his belly and dropped from a 44 waist to 38. It has been such a joy to buy new closthes for him!

Now our bodies are plateaued at this lower weight, but I don't still feel the sense of weighing less. It kind of seems strange that we don't still have that sense of accomplis... Tue, 30 Aug 2016 10:07:58 EST It's that time of year http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6223331 August - the dog days of summer and for me that sinking feeling that I have not accomplished all that I intended to during the warm months. Since I was a high-schooler, I have felt that twinge of not getting everything done. Like the squirrells in the yard, I start the process of preparing for the next season - trying to scurry around and get everything done. It is a bit stressful for me.

My husband and I are hard workers and seems like we rarely have the chance to play because ... Tue, 23 Aug 2016 20:15:30 EST A Moment to Reflect http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6211106 Today was a different day. Hubby usually works from home but had to drive to a city about 1 1/2 hours away to exchange his work computer. Meanwhile, my daughter who usually works about 45 minutes away got to work from home on a major paperwork project which required her to spread out more than there was room in her office. So, they pulled a switch-a-roo on me. Ha!

I did not sleep well last night and didn't get up until about 3 hours later than usual. Life's challenges were on ... Tue, 2 Aug 2016 17:06:57 EST Addicted! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6205519 Today's feature "6 Ways to Fight Food Addiction" by Dr Pamela Peeke was very interesting to me. I am a sugar-holic. Pair that sweet with something salty and I am almost unstoppable. It was interesting to learn the very strong signals my brain is receiving and providing.

I plan to put the article in my favorites and refer to it often. I was bummed that the link for the quiz did not work. I am interested in finding out more.

Luckily, I am also addicted to reaching my... Sat, 23 Jul 2016 19:24:11 EST Hubby's Dietary Restrictions http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6204333 So, DH is prepping for a colonoscopy next Monday. As of a couple days ago, nuts and seeds are to be avoided. We often use a handful of nuts as our snacks. To add to the list, just as our zucchini and green beans are ready he can't have seeds. Plus we have watermelon and strawberries in the fridge - all off limits til Monday evening.

I am trying to focus on the vegetables we can eat - green pepper, onion, mushroom, celery, potaotes, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower come to min... Thu, 21 Jul 2016 12:45:28 EST Pokemon GO http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6202841 Yesterday a couple of neighbor ladies walked by and we exchanged some comments about Pokemon GO. I did not know too much about it, so I asked our oldest daughter. Her fiance had her download it, so she had found some of the little critters.

She tried to give a quick explanation and decided to have me hop in the car and go find one. It was just 1/4 mile away at a church. Since we live in a fairly rural area (corn fields behind us) it is not practical to walk along the busy roadw... Mon, 18 Jul 2016 21:53:20 EST Day of Mixed Feelings http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6200354 I am getting ready to attend the funeral of a 27-year-old young mother. She just didn't wake up on Saturday morning after having an epilleptic seizure. The father of her 4-month-old daughter is having to learn how to care of the baby. Mom had almost exclusively taken care of those duties.

Thank goodness the mother's mother, Laura, is right there to help. She is a person of amazing strength in hard times. I have known Laura for about 20 years, since our girls attended school to... Thu, 14 Jul 2016 10:47:11 EST Travel Challenges http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6198920 Hubby and I traveled about 1400 miles this past week to attend a wedding and we tacked on extra day to visit the Biltmore house in Asheville, NC. The trip was SO worth the miles we logged.

I had planned ahead and cut up some veggies and took some fruit. But in the hot car they were not appetizing past the second day. I did eat a salad everyday, but the salads were too big. Not knowing for sure when/where our next meal would be, I found myself eating the whole thing. Also, I ... Mon, 11 Jul 2016 21:59:33 EST A Mid-Goal Was Reached! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6192034 Well, after about six weeks longer than planned, I have reached a certain weight that I have not been at since 1993. Five years ago I came close, but this number was elusive. I made the mark yesterday and today stayed close to it. But, boy, do I have the munchies today! I need to get some more produce in the house.

Anyway, June 28th goes down as being a happy day for me this year. I have now set another mid-term goal on my journey to long-term better health.

Support... Wed, 29 Jun 2016 21:26:24 EST A Productive Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6187197 My weight was stable (shucks) but I did well with my food/water consumption. While hubby was traveling the state for business, I trimmed the bushes, washed rugs for the garage, scrubbed the back porch, and handled numerous calls regarding mother-in-law's business affairs.

In the evening we went to the first summer concert of the season. The weather was beautiful - about 78 degrees.

This morning at about 5:15 AM as the full moon was setting, and daylight was awakening, ... Tue, 21 Jun 2016 22:00:31 EST Great Father's Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6186240 We had all three of our daughters here as well as hubby's mom, my sister, and the fiance of our oldest daughter. It was in the mid-90's here, which is unusually high for this time of year. So, we cancelled our outdoor plans and stayed in the house.

It was a pleasant day with too much good food. My mother-in-law noted that our potluck was mostly vegetables - absolutely right!! She commented that it was so different from what she used to do. Her dinner parties usually involved t... Mon, 20 Jun 2016 11:12:42 EST Shed Cleaning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6185392 Well today we put our shed on a bit of a diet. It was hot outside, but this was the first chance that hubby has had to tackle the shed since we obtained many items as his mom was preparing her house to sell. We got a good start to organizing the combined contents. He replaced some things with his dad's stuff and just got rid of some others. It was a nice little "gift" for hubby on Father's Day weekend. Sat, 18 Jun 2016 21:47:06 EST Plateau and Priorities http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6184627 I have been battling to get to a goal weight for about a month. My weight has increased, then I brought it back down. My goal had been set for May 15th, and I still have not reached it. It occurred to me just the other day that a month has already passed by!

To reach the goal I need to re-prioritize my day to get in more exercise. My husband likes to join in and he has been putting in a lot of hours with his job. I kind of feel guilty if I exercise without him. I am beginni... Fri, 17 Jun 2016 11:55:42 EST Sugar Challenge - Whole Grains http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6181613 Today I had whole grain toast. I did try one new cookie, but resisted the offer to have a second.

Also, we have a candy dish which I do not plan to replenish until company comes on Father's Day. She runs half marathons but has never done a color run. So we, along with hubby, decided to participate. We had so much fun getting colored and seeing friends from times past. We hope to do it again next year!

The weather was just beautiful! One daughter headed to Indy for a car competition with her fiance. Wed, 8 Jun 2016 14:12:35 EST It is Wednesday of a Short Week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6174308 It is Wednesday already! We had a very pleasant Memorial Day with our family. We started out the morning by going to Mass which was held in a very old cemetery. It was so beautiful and peaceful. We then went to the mausoleum where my father-in-law is located. Then back home for a cookout and yard games. There were six of us in total.

I had prepped some mostly vegetable salads to go with the grilled meat. Two salads were new and I did a variation of an old reliable one. One ... Not craving sweets is such a big blessing.

Last evening we purchased a walker for Zofia to use when she gets up in the morning. Yesterday morning she fell in her apartment and laid there for 2 1/2 hours before she was discovered. She seems fine other than that. This morning, Jack called her and she did not answer. He called the front desk to check on her. She was found on the floor, too weak to get up. He got her moving again. We are going to look for a cane to assist her in the mornings when she is having a tougher time.

I got on the scale today to find a nice drop! Wed, 25 May 2016 10:42:53 EST DASHing Continues http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6169638 On Monday my husband and I took a day trip to Toledo, OH. We had a very pleasant day of visiting the Libbey glass outlet store, a cathedral, and a famous restaurant called Tony Packo's. I had not heard of it, but it was referred to in the show MASH. They served great Hungarian food. My husband and I each ordered a different specialty and split them. Cabbage rolls and chicken paprikash - good eats!

On our way home we stopped at a Home Goods store - the first he has been to one.... Tue, 24 May 2016 18:29:44 EST Carbs! Thirst! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6167985 Well, I went on a carb binge yesterday and I will be paying for it for a couple of days of weight increases. Being a bit of an addict when it comes to them, I really need to use restraint when eating them, but didn't yesterday.

Upon reflection, I think that I was actually thirsty but used the carbs to try to satisfy my thirst. Need to clean up my act today - more water, no muffins or chips today! Sun, 22 May 2016 08:26:49 EST Hail Mary in Lansing http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6167654 Early this morning we drove to Lansing with one of my husband's friends. They took part in a Living Rosary on the steps of the Capitol building at 10 AM. There was a balloon tied to a barrier for each bead of the rosary and as the rosary was prayed the balloon was cut and given to a child. Then at the end the children released the balloons and sent their prayers to heaven. It was a beautiful event on a beautiful morning.

It is already late afternoon and I am not doing so well ... Sat, 21 May 2016 16:09:06 EST Interrupted Sleep / Fran / Girls' Jobs http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6166172 I did not get enough sleep. My mother-in-law called at 3:45 this morning because she felt weak. She has started to have a rough time getting up from bed. At age 83 with other health factors it is understandable. The thing is she likes to call my hubby, her only child, at whatever time she feels like it. He went to sleep after about 1/2 hour but I was awake for two full hours. When I did get up I was in the middle of a dream and I am foggy this morning.

Fran called yesterday. ... Thu, 19 May 2016 09:28:33 EST Pretty Morning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6165463 We finally have a pretty morning! There was frost on the rooftops, but it is getting warmer.

Weight is starting to come down after the birthday splurge. I am just 5.2 pounds away from my mid-term goal. I will do some yard work which will get in some fitness activity.

I am mentally working to try to figure out how to better organize our basement, garage and shed. Wed, 18 May 2016 09:47:12 EST My Birthday was Memorable http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6164088 I turned over to 56 years old yesterday. That was first time I ever recall it snowing on my birthday! It sounds like it did snow later in May back in 1961. Wow, was that chilly! My mom said Mother Nature was throwing confetti for my "party"!

Our youngest daughter drove up on Saturday and we spent the day planning on how to redecorate the family room. That was fun! Now I have to find the stuff I have envisioned.

On my birthday we went to 8AM Mass at a nearby town. ... Mon, 16 May 2016 11:37:06 EST Sugary Pop http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6162059 A mini success was revealed the other evening when I went to the grocery store and was not even the slightest tempted by the pop aisle. As a self-diagnosed sugar addict, I have long tried to avoid pop, although I frequently succumbed to it. Since I lean toward natural ingredients, I always chose the "healthier" version of the regular recipe as opposed to fake, sugar-free products. A few years ago I realized that the fizz was satisfying and even the sound of the tab popping off brought grea... Fri, 13 May 2016 09:42:37 EST Foggy Brain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6161395 I am foggy this morning after a rather poor night's sleep. I woke up in the night figuring it was probably 4:30 - it was 12:45! I was awake for 2 hours.

Got up early to take the Edge into the dealer again. The door latch is supposed to arrive today. Hope that fixes the electrical problem.

Laundry and then Karen's house today to deliver fabric and thread for the Mission.

Put on .2 lb, still in the lower "decade". Yay! I have not been at this point in about 5 years! Yay!! I am 3.8 pounds away from my next goal which I wanted to meet in only 4 more days. I won't make that date, but I DO plan to make the weight goal.

Grievances - I am dealing with a hassle with our HSA account. Wed, 11 May 2016 13:53:45 EST Spark Streak http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6159990 I realized that on Sunday, May 8, 2016 - Mother's Day, I set a personal best streak of logging on to Spark People for 100 days straight! I had also reduced my weight by 20 pounds. Today I need to get rid of .9 more to reach another goal of being down into another "decade" of weight. My original goal of weighing 225 by May 15th won't be realized, but being within 5 pounds of that goal is great! I'll just set another goal to work on. Tue, 10 May 2016 09:59:45 EST Mother's Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6159470 Yesterday we had a nice Mother's Day with all three girls, my sister and mother-in-law. I didn't have to cook anything! jack and I did put on weight, though. We are back to our DASH phase I plan today. Hoping it will help me get into a lower decade of weight!

Continuing to get things organized around the house. This afternoon will be bills. Mon, 9 May 2016 14:20:33 EST Digging Down http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6158177 My husband is encouraging me to try to get very close to my goal set for May 15th. He suggested that we do a week of DASH Phase 1 again. So, with the exception of Mother's Day, we are going to go back to Phase 1 and see what it does for us. I am wavering with being 19 pounds down and my goal is to be 26 pounds down by that date. I will be happy to be in the 220's - I am SO close, with that mini goal being only .7 lbs away. I plan to meet that goal, but most likely not the 225 goal. All ... Sat, 7 May 2016 11:05:03 EST Moms http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6155803 I had a nice dinner with my mother in law at the Mother's Day Gala at her retirement center. This was after she complained very heavily to my husband this morning that she had to literally crawl to get out of bed.

I also had a not so pleasant 2-hour conversation with my mother in the afternoon.

Overall a stressful day. Didn't have time to eat much and my BP was high.

Ready for a brighter tomorrow! Tue, 3 May 2016 20:51:59 EST New Pants for Hubby http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6154625 I was switching seasonal wardrobes for hubby and I. I asked him to try on some pants to see if they fit. To his delight, he found that pants that were tight at Christmas were all but falling off him! So, we went outlet shopping on Sunday to get him a smaller size. So happy for him! Mon, 2 May 2016 09:37:03 EST Doing Well with DASH http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6152784 I hopped on the scale yesterday and my weight had dropped some. This morning I looked back. This is the least I have weighed in four years! 2011 was a hallmark year for me, and I am looking to weighing less than I did in July of 2011. I am eight pounds from a goal which I did not reach in 2011. I am inspired to reach that goal! Fri, 29 Apr 2016 10:45:23 EST Re-energized Effort http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6149862 My husband and I have been following principles of the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) philosophy since January when dizziness suddenly struck him. I thought there was a chance this was a stroke, but it turned out it was dislodged crystals in his ear. I had read about DASH many years ago and thought it would be a good way to get us to a healthier point.

I have a mini goal of losing 26 pounds by May 15th. We found out at 4:15 PM on Thursday that the house would not be closing at noon on Friday - after the buyer's request on Monday. Our realtor was floored - he has never had anything this late happen in his 26 years of selling. As it was, he had to push to find out this info. The other realtor and broker were not returning his calls when he was trying to set up the final walk-through before closing. It was the title company that let it slip. Soun... Sat, 23 Apr 2016 19:03:52 EST The End of One Journey http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6147121 We have had quite a time since Thanksgiving when we found out that my mother in law (MIL) was accepted to a senior assisted living facility. We moved her in and put her house up for sale. It has been a huge struggle to clear her three bedroom ranch with a full basement and reduce to a one bedroom apartment. She wanted us or our daughters to take most of it - even her undergarments!! We ended up having two garage sales in April - brrr! One of the days even had snow on the ground. Our old... Thu, 21 Apr 2016 09:27:09 EST Trying the DASH way of eating http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6095634 About four weeks ago my husband woke up dizzy. The next day I took him to the Dr. The crystals in his inner ear were displaced and causing the dizziness, but the thought had crossed my mind that it could be stroke causing him to be dizzy. I set out after the Dr visit to start us on the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) way of eating. The first two weeks were very limited and we both lost weight - 10 for him and 8 for me. We are in phase II and trying to make this a true lifes... With some recent celebrations - Mother's Day, birthday, graduation, Easter - I've slipped back a bit. The weight is not going in the general direction I want it to. I need to re-focus on fruits and veggies. It is great that all that stuff is coming back into season! Sun, 18 May 2014 21:29:49 EST Beautiful Mother's Day! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5692763 My three adult daughters, husband, and I walked through beautiful Dow Gardens in Midland, about an hour away from our home. On the way there I was presented with a new pedometer! I was already wearing a cheaper version, so I wore both for our walk. The new, highly recommended pedometer tracked about 2500 more steps than my old one. I've likely not been giving myself enough credit!

We had dinner in the crockpot and salad in the frig for our return home. After eating, my husband... Fri, 9 May 2014 21:47:14 EST Begin Again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5686232 5/3/14 6:00 AM My husband and I were motivated by our community's Commit 2 Fit challenge during the month of April. I didn't quite make my goal there, but gave it a good effort. I found that site is a very basic tool for logging types of food, hydration and physical activity. But I discovered that I really like Spark People because it gives me the detailed info about my nutrition that I like to see. So, I entered my intake into SparkPeople then summarized on Commit2Fit. Since that chall... Sat, 3 May 2014 06:33:02 EST Life's a Whirlwind http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4450810 Well, life is in such a whirl. I was given official documentation on August 24th that my job has been eliminated at school due to budget cuts. So, I've started the unemployment process. My goal will be to try to find three jobs a week to apply for.
