I put in the step by step DVD today and went all the way to the end. I actually kept up pretty well! Some of the steps were a little challenging for my ankle (recovering from a torn tendon) but I played it smart and modified any twisting and jumping to protect it.

Even though it was just the step by step tutorial, I had fun and it felt good to do something a little different. I am looking forward to doing more. I am pretty famous for my lack of grace, but I think I did ... Thu, 16 May 2013 00:03:45 EST Healthy Greens http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5356901 I love, love, love having a garden! There has been so much lettuce this spring and now I'm starting to get tomatoes and green onions. I have been making my lunches ahead of time so I can just grab them and go without being tempted to eat something more "convenient". I usually slice up some turkey or ham for added protein and maybe a hard boiled egg. I feel like I'm doing something very special for my changing body by feeding it wonderful nutrient rich greens straight from my backyard! <BR... Tue, 14 May 2013 23:52:55 EST Leaping Out of the Pit of Despair http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5351559 Several of my good friends and coworkers are retiring from teaching this year. I must say that after 20 years in the classroom, I am jealous. You know the sad song teachers have been singing for years; student and parent apathy, negative press, pressure from the administration, students with fewer skills and more baggage. I'm sure that a great deal of what I'm feeling is also "MayFever", but I let my emotions get the best of me on Tuesday. I turned to food to assuage my negative feelings,... I have also been strength training to target some weak areas. With the tear in my tendon, I am trying to take it slow and avoid having to have surgery, so I have been on week one of the program for all three weeks. My ankle feels great compared to when I was just sitting around taking it easy. I think the activity is beneficial to the healing process. (At least I hope so!)

I felt so good today on m... Sat, 4 May 2013 15:49:56 EST Patience! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5333564 I have had torn tendon in my ankle since July. I've been anxious to get more active again, so I have been wearing athletic shoes everywhere (even with a dress) and I have been following a sensible walking plan. My goal is to follow the plan as the activity level increases to running and eventually run a 5k.

I'm on week two of program and my ankle feels great! I am so excited to be able to run again! Yay, ME! Tue, 23 Apr 2013 23:18:16 EST Ughh...torn tendon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5138887 I hurt my ankle months ago, in July, and I've been going to doctors ever since. Last week I finally had an MRI and found out that I have a torn tendon and a torn ligament. I have spent the last 6 weeks in a walking cast boot and symptoms have improved, but I think the next step will probably be surgery. Surgery doesn't scare me, I'm up for anything that speeds up my recovery and gets me out of the boot sooner. I just find it really hard to stay on track with my nutrition when I can't get... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 23:49:00 EST White Water Rafting!!! (pics) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4973536 We recently returned from our rafting trip on the Kern river in CA. Wow! I am now addicted to white water! We spent two days in Class 2, 3 and 4 rapids. What a rush! It has given me even more incentive to lose weight and have more adventures!

Mon, 16 Jul 2012 21:19:17 EST Shin Splints are Ruining my Plans http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4948195 I am TRYING to return to running, but I keep getting plagued by shin splints. I was running 3x week from Feb-Apr slowing building more running into my walks. I thought I was building slowly enough to avoid injury, but I developed shin splints in my left leg. My leg was painful enough that walking hurt and I couldn't even brush up against my leg without sharp pain. I took two months off and did elliptical training or walking instead. My leg improved and I was able to palpate the area rath... Fri, 29 Jun 2012 20:46:32 EST Couch to 5k http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4946152 After starting a little too fast in February, and getting a painful set of shin splints, I may be wiser. Let's hope! I started the Couch to 5k program this week hoping that I would be able to gradually increase my strength and the stress I am placing on my already overloaded joints and muscles without causing another injury.

I tend to be the sort of person that jumps in with both feet and I have high expectations for myself. Sometimes I set these expectations too high! I feel... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 11:48:07 EST Gorgeous Reward! (pic) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4772907 We went out to the wetlands for a walk/run this evening and we started a little later than I wanted to start. However, I was feeling good after a couple runs and decided to amp up the minutes. I have gotten better about taking it easy on my knee, so I ran for a minute and a half for each of the first three runs. Then I moved it up to 2 minutes for the remaining three, with a minute and a half at the end. Total minutes running is up to 12 now! So in a 36 minute period I am running a third... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 23:46:50 EST Quietly Winning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4767973 I started off the week a little depressed. On Monday, I was contemplating my life without my boys around next year (the triplets head off to college in September). It looks like 2 of them are going north to college and leaving dad and mom behind. I am nervous, excited, terrified, happy, and proud all at once! I have been keeping a journal of my eating habits and pretty much any one of those emotions could drive me to eat! I didn't log my nutrition on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I star... Sat, 3 Mar 2012 00:02:59 EST Difficult Day, Ended Well http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4750587 I had a very difficult day. It was teacher inservice (staff development) today and not a very positive day. I felt like the overall tone of the day was a focus on failure and lots of hard news. I work at an at risk school in the middle of the city. Many of our students are homeless or very close to being homeless. Several students have suffered personal losses in the last two weeks due to violence. It is very heartbreaking!

We spent the first hour of the day learning how pu... Wed, 22 Feb 2012 00:59:52 EST Beautiful Morning! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4747823 I went for a walk/run with my boys today at the Wetlands and I feel great! We walked 5 minutes and ran for 1.5 minutes for 2.5 miles. At the end we ran for 1 minute. I know that sounds easy, but after having knee injuries it is great progress for me! I feel so good now! When I exercise daily, it really helps me stay motivated to watch what I eat. Now the only problem I have is reining myself in. I want to keep running and running, and my cardiovascular system could do it...my knees woul... Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:44:24 EST Lose to Gain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4708959 I spent my holidays (from Halloween through my birthday in Jan) cooking, baking, making candy and of course eating it! I weigh more now than I ever remember weighing! In fact, the new jeans I bought just before Thanksgiving are tight now. I was lying in bed thinking about all of the things that I miss or that have changed because of my weight. Simple things like tying my shoes or bending to pick up a sock on the floor. I have never in my life had a problem doing either of those things. ... Sat, 28 Jan 2012 16:46:26 EST Ready to Run http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4493685 I have had such motivation problems lately. I have used every ridiculous excuse NOT to eat right and stay on track with my nutrition. But last night I decided it's time for me to start running again. I love running! It is such therapy for me. I feel like exercising is boring or tedious, but running....ahhhh, running is different. I feel alive when I run. I sometimes feel I could go on and on for miles. I need that feeling again. I think that if I focus on running and sign up for a 5k... Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:15:05 EST I lost four pounds last week! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4429349 I am so excited that my hard work is paying off! I have really pushed myself to exercise this last week, completing two very strenuous hikes as well as hopping on my elliptical trainer each day that I wasn't hiking. I kept within my calorie range for the most part, going over by a couple hundred calories after a 6 hour hike.
I am trying to change my attitude. If I want to eat something that is higher in fat or calories, I consider my activity level and then I have it, track it,... Mon, 15 Aug 2011 22:37:51 EST Brutal, but Beautiful! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4421741 The boys and I hiked the North Loop Trail in the Spring Mountains today. I haven't hiked that trail for over 13 years and I was much thinner then! It is a pretty brutal climb for the first two miles, and I was getting so tired. (It doesn't help that I got only 4 hours of sleep last night-I was too excited about this hike) Now I am just exhausted!

It was gorgeous up there with old twisted trees and wildflowers. The breeze whispered through the trees and cooled our faces. The... Thu, 11 Aug 2011 21:43:14 EST Uphill....both ways? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4411372 I just got home from a butt kicking hike! Elevation Gain=5,000 feet! I am so proud of myself. I didn't stop even though my legs were burning. I swear other hikers (and wildlife) could hear my breathing for a 2 mile radius! I think I burned enough calories for today. It was beautiful! Wild horses were all over the meadows! I will definitely have to go back and do that one again!
256 Sat, 6 Aug 2011 21:49:25 EST Not Very Hungry http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4409409 I have not been ravenous like I thought I would be. Yesterday I used the elliptical, so I decided to use the treadmill and take it easy on my knee. I don't want to overdo and then not be able to workout at all. My daughter in law keeps me going. She is a workout fanatic! Thanks, Tata! Wed, 3 Aug 2011 14:46:12 EST
