Mon, 30 Jun 2014 10:21:57 EST Don't pull the trigger! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5720829 My 5% challenge assignment for yesterday was to think about our food triggers or actions that trigger eating behaviors. I wish I would have thought about this yesterday instead of today. I had a very stressful 12+ hour work day yesterday. When I left work I drove 20 miles to the nearest town and bought my cryptonite, a pint of salted caramel truffle ice cream. I drove back home, got a spoon, turned on the tv, sat down and ate the ice cream right from the container until it was empty. As ... I traveled to Denver for knee surgery for my MIL and cancer surgery for my sister. My eating was okay but I did not have internet access so I broke my Spark people check in streak and my 10,000 + step streak. So today is day 1. I am going to do 10,000+ steps per day and track all food daily. She has been diagnosed with stage 3 endometreal cancer. She is 58 and single with rocky relationships with her children. I will be with her Thursday for a radical hysterectomy and then we will find out what other treatment might be recommended. She is already telling me that she will refuse chemo or radiation. I am prepared to do some verbal battle with her but it will ultimately be her decision. Hopefully the doctor will be able to get it all in s... Fri, 30 May 2014 21:36:17 EST Blog, blog, blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5706232 Okay, our 5% challenge habit for the week is blogging. I fully intended to blog every day this week but it is day 6 and I am only on blog 4. Oh well, that is how it goes. Saturday will be the final weigh in for this challenge and I am not expecting much of a loss. It looks like I will finish this eight week challenge with a loss of somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds. 1/2 pound per week seems to be the best I can do even when tracking and staying in range and getting in a ton of exercise. ... My mother-in-law is having a knee replaced on June 1 so we hope to help her get her house ready for her recovery. She is very sharp and independent but Macular Degeneration has taken its toll on her and her eyesight is very poor. Hope you all have a great Memorial Weekend. Sat, 24 May 2014 08:22:48 EST Breakfast Observations http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5634313 This week for my 5% challenge we are challenged to eat a healthy breakfast everyday. My habits already included eating breakfast so I decided to spend the week really paying attention to my breakfast and how I feel later. I have read a lot of research about oatmeal being high in staying power and it has often been my go-to breakfast. I use old-fashion oats, 1T. ground flax, and 1 T. chia seeds. I usually cook my oatmeal with 1/2 cup of fruit (usually blueberries) and water. I top it with... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 11:42:59 EST A Lazy Start to 2014 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5594956 I am sorry to say I am not off to a good start for 2014. I was off vacationing in Florida when the year began so I never sat down and wrote any goals for the year. My vacation weight maintenance was successful and I began to get a bit cocky about my ability to do this by rote. I have not gained (I don't think) but I have started to develop some less than stellar habits.

So......today I start a new streak. Tue, 3 Dec 2013 11:21:30 EST Miserable http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5546353 I am getting behind on my Christmas Challenge countdown. I have been feeling miserable since Friday with shooting pain, like electrical sensations, up my right arm and around my ribcage. Monday the Dr ran lots of tests to rule out heart issues or pneumonia. I thought I would be down to at least 180 pounds by this point but I am still hovering at about 188. I really hope to be at 180 by January 14 as that would be my low for the past 10 years. All I can really do is stick to my plan and hope that my weight follows along. My goals for September are to stay within calorie range 1200-1500 all 30 days, average at least 10,000 steps for 30 days, strength train at least 12 of the 30 days, and average at least 10 flights ... It is freggie week on my 5% challenge. I didn't have a great week spark wise but I am pumped for eating my freggies this week. I started the morning with a banana and a two mile round trip walk to the farmer's market. Weather wise, it has been an unusual summer here on the great plains so the selection was a bit limited. With that in mind I did pick up a cantaloupe, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, yellow squash, and peppers. The watermelons were tempting but I didn't ... We get used to the sirens and multiple trips to the basement to weather the storm and often hedge our bets that the weatherman is wrong . Our neighbors in Oklahoma lost the roll of the dice today. To our Oklahoma Spark family, please understand that your neighbors in Kansas understand the devastation that you are facing this evening. Our prayers are with you. I have been working on doing away with evening snacks. I have lost count of my streak but I did break the streak a couple of times while on a big road trip. Despite breaking the streak I have made great strides with finishing my day with dinner. At this point I have lost 4 pounds during this challenge. I will likely finish well short of 5% but 1/2 pound per week is actually pretty go... Nothing like being sick and miserable to pull off a nice weight loss. Really, even when diligent I usually lose about 2 pounds a month not a week. I just hope it doesn't magically reappear when I feel good.

Keep on Tracking: Our challenge this week is to track all meals and stay within calorie limits. This is probably the most important challenge of the whole shebang. Luckily for me I have been working on this since January 1. I resolved th... Well, I already looked up one this morning for pumpkin spice oatmeal. I am, however, having a piece of whole wheat toast with cheese because it is shopping day and my cupboards are bare. I don't even have a piece of fruit left to have with it. I do have oatmeal but I am out of milk. Anyway, I thought I would share one of my favorite breakfasts... I want to make every meal last at least 20 minutes. To accomplish this I am setting the timer on my smart phone for 20 minutes when I start a meal. I look at it occasionally but I can't take the last bite of my meal until the alarm goes off. I have remembered to set the timer about 50% of my meals and I have been successful when I remember to set the timer. Occasionally... I do hope to keep this streak alive and I will report back, just not every day. My eating and exercise were back to normal yesterday. I cooked a solid evening meal which really does make it easier to quit eating after dinner. I made pan grilled orange roughy, green peas with tiny potatoes, and fresh strawberries. The strawberries aren't great yet but they did give me just a hint of spring. 334 Thu, 7 Mar 2013 11:21:08 EST 5% Challenge Daily Blog #5 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5275821 No Nighttime eating streak Day 5. 334 I forgot my fitbit on its charger at work yesterday. I was initially quite disappointed with myself but it was actually kind of freeing. I love my fitbit and it has certainly opened my eyes to how sedentary my work day is. On the otherhand, I think it has pushed me to obsess about getting my steps in at the expense of my other forms of exercise. Since I wasn't counting steps I got out my kettleball and my hula hoop. Last night was fairly easy because I am in a motel 200 miles from home. I was tempted enough to check out the vending machine but I didn't purchase anything and safely went back to my room and put on my pj's so I wouldn't be able to find the vending machine again. I'd better go as I need to get in some more miles on the treadmill before I hit the road. I am trying to quit evening eating. I am happy to announce that this is day 2 of my no nighttime eating streak. I have a couple of methods I am trying to help me break this habit. First I eat a decent size healthy dinner so I know that my body doesn't really need anything more. Second, I do the dishes immediately after dinner than shut off the kitchen light. Third, I brush my teeth to help signal the end of the eating day. Finally,... I recently had a 13 day streak which I broke by consuming a couple tablespoons of peanut butter. I know that some people regularly have an evening snack and it works for them. My weight has been steadily creeping up since December and I have been ignoring that gain in my tracker. I am coming clean in April. I have changed my tracker to reflect a 9 pound gain. I have also eliminated most of my goals. I am going to focus on two goals. 1. Stay under 1400 calories. 2. Do 30 minutes of cardio 6 days per week. So I am not embarrassed to fly on an airplane.
4. So I can be the skinniest one of my siblings.
5. So I am not so tired when playing with my grandchildren.
6. So I am not described as the fat one. ... Thu, 22 Sep 2011 18:58:01 EST Rocky Start, Strong Finish http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4477526 My day started with a breakfast of ice cream with chocolate syrup. Yummy but not particularly smart. I did count it as breakfast, added a fruit, and still stayed within my 400 calorie breakfast range. I ate a healthy breakfast, have a yummy dinner planned and I got in 120 minutes of exercise this morning. All is well that ends well! Sat, 10 Sep 2011 17:02:37 EST Summer 5% Challenge Wrap up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4475727 Okay, I will start by saying that I did not meet my 5% goal, not even close. I am quite happy with the results even though they are from a combination of a healthy diet and modern medicine. Today I decided to make and early morning walk and I scored big. I got tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, green peppers, beets, zucchini, yellow squash, new potatoes, sweet corn and a big beautiful cantaloupe. Yum, I can hardly wait for dinner. Sat, 16 Jul 2011 10:31:44 EST Summer 5% Challenge - Assignment #4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4351514 My assignment today is to talk about my food triggers. My number one food trigger is ice cream. I am equal opportunity when it comes to ice cream. I love every color and flavor in big giant bowls. I have often said if I could only eat one food for the rest of my life it would be ice cream. Since I know that I have a hard time controlling myself around ice cream I will not buy any for the house for the duration of this challenge. I am not necessarily giving it up but if I want ice cream I... Sat, 9 Jul 2011 15:02:05 EST
