By Monday, I realized I had walking pneumonia. Yay. And viral at that.

I don't care what anyone says - Antibiotics do nothing for a viral infection. I rallied what little strength I had, got out the cocoa butter and essential oils and made a big batch of oregano oil suppositories. These aren't "magic bullets" but they work on bronchitis and pneumonia. By Tuesday, I was improved, an... I'll be so glad when this whatever it is goes completely away! No fever, now just a post-nasal drip and very little energy.

Today I received a very pleasant surprise in the mail. I'd been looking for a cheese cradle, and have had very little luck even finding one. When I did find one, it was very expensive. Very expensive to me is over $40.00. A few days ago, I did a search for one on Ebay, and one several came up. One, however, was an antique porcelain bisque chees... I do believe that I'm actually fighting a sinus infection. I'm definitely better, but not there yet.

We got a blast of cold air from the north last night - 25 degrees - First time in over 20 years that I've got ice here - not too much, but I had to knock the ice out of the chicken's waterer before I let them out this morning. I also fortified their hen house with some cardboard that covers the front windows. There's a carpenter-cloth covered vent on th... Thu, 18 Jan 2018 11:31:25 EST Still Taking It Easy - http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6452783 I'm sure my boss is not happy with me. That's just too bad. If this was a normal cold, I'd be taking Dayquil and sallying forth. This cold has been different. CONSTANT post-nasal drip. Mild sore throat, and mild cough caused by the post-nasal drip. And a low-grade fever with a headache. Most colds, I'm over any mild fever by now, and may be coughing a lot, and everything pretty much controlled by OTC cold meds. Not this one.

As long as I have a fever, I'm staying put. I'm ... Wed, 17 Jan 2018 19:57:42 EST Colds - http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6452191 Why is it that people downplay being sick when they have a cold? "It's just a cold!" and sneezing, coughing and snotting, off to work they go! Thanks. That's exactly how I got this one!!

Now, let me start off by saying that, yes, it is not likely that you're going to die from a cold. However, anything that makes you feel this lousy isn't something you need to "nut-up" and muddle through. Right now, I have a mild fever, a very stuffy head, and while I'm VERY tired, I'm having a... Tue, 16 Jan 2018 09:38:18 EST I've said it before - Weekends are just TOO SHORT!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6448608 This weekend has been a whirlwind of stuff. It's finally getting warmer here - Not balmy by any means, but today warmed up into the 60's. Still too cold for my liking.

Yesterday, I did my usual chores and shopping, and made my first washed curd cheese - Fontina. It's drying as I type this. After a couple of days drying, i will age it for about 90 days.

Then, I tried making whey ricotta again, with a new recipe. I did get a better yield this time, but it's still pr... They'll be fine.

The dogs, of course, are sissies. They won't go out for more than a minute, so they pee and poo on the patio... or worse, on pads in the laundry room.....EEEWWEEE! I Now Have a Cheese Press! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6439990 Last week, I took the next step in my cheesemaking adventure and bought a cheese press. This was a well-researched and planned purchase, as I've trying to buy things without going into debt for them. As much as I would like to be all set up to do this, I know that by buying the things I need a few at a time, and buying the bigger things when I'm able to will serve me well.

After much consideration, I decided on The Ultimate Cheese Press from Homesteader's Supply, and I'm over the... This soap has to cure for 6 weeks, and when it's ready, this rich, organic soap will be comparable to bars priced at $7.00 to $10.00! That's some pretty good use of food-grade lye, olive, coconut, sweet almond oil, and lavendar essential oil!

<img src="http://photosaws.... And those of us with seasonal depression know it’s coming, and if we’re lucky, we’ve learned to prepare for it.

Last year, despite being laid off and collecting unemployment, was one of my best years in a very long time. Most everything substantial that needs to be planted in the garden is sown in October, and I'm still cleaning up the back yard.

No big deal with the back yard - I'm not killing myself in the heat. However, when it gets just a little cooler, I plant to gather up all of the sticks and branches and run them through my little wood chipper. All that mulch will be great for the back yard. For now, the chickens are having a gre... My internet and cell phone have become more reliable, and it's SO nice to the A/C back on!

However, things are still a little out of kelter. The St. Johns river is still cresting, causing some people to be flooded out of their homes over a week after the hurricane. Remember, like the Nile, the St. Johns river runs North. My sweet, little Marsala has it on her right foot. She probably got it scratching in the yard.

Bumblefoot is basically a staph infection. Most likely, she got a small cut or abrasion from a rock in the yard. Chickens have soft, pillowy feet on the bottom, and the pad in the center of their feet usually takes the brunt of every step, jump and scratch. With bumb... My Saturdays and Sundays are pretty predictable. As long as I have to work, they will continue to be because I've got to cram everything I need to do at home into the weekend.

Today's grocery trip scored a chuck roast at $4.99/lb, chicken thighs and 5 lbs of ground beef. It started off as usual, but now that have the vacu-sealer, I try to pick up at least one package of whatever sale item I can find in the meat department. This time, I got $0.88/lb chicken legs, and $4.99/lb beef ribeye steaks (Yum!). I also bought another 5 lb bag of good rice and a package of dry black beans. I've got putting these things up down to science - all meats portion-packed and dry goods put up in Mason jars in an hour!

Then, off to Tricia... Today was actually pleasant!

Big doings at our homestead this afternoon, too. Any of you who remember our beautiful Mama dog, Clarice, knows that she tried so hard to catch a squirrel. All I had to do was say "Squirrel" and off she'd go into the back yard!! Only problem is, Clarice would get SO excited that she just had to bark - Not good for squirrel hunting. Mon, 20 Mar 2017 16:42:49 EST What a Beautiful Sunday! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6335457 I couldn't have asked for a better day! Cool morning - Warm afternoon!

This morning, I made breakfast, enjoyed a hot cup of tea, and saw to the chickens. After I got them squared away (with a few kale leaves from the garden for a treat!), I took some eggs and a jar of strawberry jam to my friend, Tricia. Coffee and good conversation!

Home again, and out to the garden. Time to harvest the rutabagas and get them canned. This was the first time I'd tried growing them h... Sun, 19 Mar 2017 20:44:31 EST Warming Up! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6334992 It was cold this morning, in the 40's, and the heat came on at 6:00 a.m., just as I programmed it. By mid-morning, it was warm enough to sit outside without a jacket - Jeans and t-shirt weather! By late afternoon, it was warm enough for the A/C to kick on! Gotta love Central Florida!

First, grocery shopping. Next, I spent a good part of the morning in the garden. My son left around 10:00 am for Bush Gardens with two of his friends, so I have the house to myself. Lots of time ... Sat, 18 Mar 2017 21:12:01 EST Beware the Ides of March..... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6333582 Interesting day today. Florida Sun, in answer to your question, my co-worker is very sick. Chemotherapy is a horrible thing to go through. However, she has insisted on coming in to work, even though Mr. Boss is paying her salary. She has a very aggressive cancer and is facing an operation soon. Yesterday and today, she was crying because the neuropathy in her hands and feet make it impossible for her to walk.

She's filed for disability, and hopefully, when that comes through, ... Wed, 15 Mar 2017 21:36:42 EST March Winds and an Impending Cold Spell.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6333095 Gardeners always have to deal with the weather. It teaches us acceptance. The garden is doing so well - tomatoes and peppers have blossoms, and the potatoes are about 15" high now, and we're getting a freeze warning for the surrounding counties for Thursday. Let's hope it stays in the counties to the north of us!

And if it doesn't, we just re-plant. In any event, it won't hurt much.

The pickles are now two weeks away from being done. The two new fermenting crocks ... Tue, 14 Mar 2017 21:33:08 EST Another Cloudy, Blustery Day.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6332026 Not complaining, mind you, but it would have been nice to have gotten some rain today. All day yesterday, that was the forecast, and today, dry as a bone. Maybe we'll get that rain tomorrow?

I'm enjoying being lazy. Today I'm trying to cope with this !@#$!! time change - Makes me crazy. So, I started a spaghetti sauce this morning, decided to go to Walmart tomorrow, and only when out to fill up my gas tank for the week. I also stopped by Baggs - my favorite produce stand. Th... Sun, 12 Mar 2017 20:56:37 EST God is Happy. He Plays with Us. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6329954 I really, truly believe that, too. This past weekend was cool and breezy. I managed to get some things done in the house. Saturday, I baked a cake and relaxed a lot of the day. Monday, I got some gardening in, and prepared for the install of my new A/C and furnace on Tuesday.

So....Tuesday morning, I got my son up early, and we moved the flip-coop to a spot behind the tool shed in my back yard, and moved the girls. Since they usually lay their eggs before 1:00 pm, I added the... Wed, 8 Mar 2017 20:24:57 EST Soft Rain for the Garden http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6324169 So nice when rain happens on a work day - late afternoon, a soft and gentle soaking! Much needed for the garden! Even the girls liked scratching for bugs in it!

Working part time is just paying the bills, but the plus side is not having to put up with thme office insanity for more than 18 hours. On one hand, I'm praying for full-time work, but on the other, it's really nice having more time at home. My stress level, even with added expense of the new A/C and furnace, has gone d... Thu, 2 Mar 2017 21:53:56 EST Yes, Jane, It's Always Something...... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6322548 When it rains, it pours. My A/C unit started making funny noises......It's 15 years old, and can be band-aided for a while, but the compressor is going. It's running and cooling now, but it's pretty much a given that it won't survive the Summer. Criminy!!! And I can't even say that the A/C company that just gave me the quote might be wrong, because they are the bomb! So, have to find a way or make a way to have the A/C and furnace replaced to the tune of $4200. Yikes.

The g... Mon, 27 Feb 2017 21:26:28 EST
