TRISHP1961's SparkPeople Blog TRISHP1961's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community New Plan I decided to change my routine. Pilates on Thursday and Yoga on Monday wasn't very much cardio. I have an elliptical on my porch, but don't seem to have the energy to really get on it now that school has started.
For the cost of my weekly Pilates class, I can buy a fitness membership at the Holiday Inn. This will let me swim every day after school. My son is running track and doesn't need to be picked up until 530...So my Christmas present for the family was a fitness membership. Ma... Mon, 30 Dec 2013 03:05:25 EST Fall- A Time to Reflect and Renew As a teacher, Fall has always been an exciting time for me. A new set of students, a new schedule, a new year. This Fall, I found both a Pilates and a yoga class weekly. I have dabbled in both and have always done at least one weekly. I am really enjoying the Monday yoga, Thursday Pilates routine.
Last Christmas, I joined Weight Watchers online. I thought it would give me a new perspective and help get me off the plateau I was on...Well, I am happy to report I did lose 8 pounds. Bu... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 21:17:15 EST September Goals This has been a long summer for me. Between a trip to South Dakota with my daughter the beginning of July, surgery the end of July and aspirin desensitization the end of August, I haven't had much free time in the summer.
My goals in September are:
Good habits to continue when I go back to work:
Continue going to the gym Monday, Wednesday, Friday evenings
Do weight training and cardio there
Eat 4 servings of vegetables a day.
Eat 4 servings of fruit a day. <BR... Sat, 1 Sep 2012 22:16:24 EST Diet Guidelines for Busy People I was given this 2 page article from my acupuncturist. Thought I'd share it's main points for anyone interested.
Food- minimize pork, white and refined sugar products, artificial sweeteners and white flour products.
Drink- Minimize sodas and cow's milk.
Breakfast- 1 or 2 eggs (2 or 3 times a week) Skip traditional orange juice it conatins too much acid and sugar.
Eat as much fresh fruit as you can between meals. Thu, 19 Jan 2012 19:36:42 EST Finally some success I found a website that suggested you eat a half of a grapefruit before each meal to help with weight loss. That sounded like a good idea, so I tried it. It did seem to work. I lost 5 pounds this week. The website says to not use the idea for more than 3 weeks...I guess your body gets used to the lower calories and weight loss stops. So I am going to try to keep doing it for the 3 weeks.
Was able to get to the track and walk most days this week. I will try to get there more often ... Sat, 7 Jan 2012 20:51:33 EST They fit I finally admitted my work pants' buttons were breaking not because I had the pants for 6 years, but because they were getting too small. So I went to a store and bought the size I should be wearing on sale after Christmas. My plan is to fix the buttons on the pants and get back into them by April vacation. I am guessing I should lose 10 -15 pounds and they will fit. Until then, I actually have cheap pants that really do fit. Fri, 30 Dec 2011 21:47:15 EST Time to Face the Truth and Move On I should have known something was wrong with my scale in July. All of a sudden, I weighed 10 pounds less. Well, I gained those 10 pounds back and 5 more. Today I went on the Wii scale for the first time in more than a year. It has me weighing 148, which is 10 pounds more than my home scale. Still in denial, I went to the club and weighed myself there. It agreed with the Wii. So in one year, I have gained 15 pounds. Now my goal is to face the fact, admit that walking 2 miles a day is n... Tue, 27 Dec 2011 21:02:47 EST December Goals I was able to get all the way to Thanksgiving without gaining any weight in November. The long weekend of Thanksgiving, however, was not a weekend of good choices. My goals for December are:
get back to below 130 by the New Year
Continue to walk between 2-3 miles five days a week
Continue to do yoga on Tuesday evenings
Let children eat as many Christmas cookies as they want Sat, 10 Dec 2011 20:41:15 EST And It All Comes Tumbling Down... Was all ready to begin using my treadmill...Well I went on it for four days and was doing really well. It decided to stop working 3 minutes after I reached 6mph. The next day it stopped working after I reached 6 mph for 1 minute. Now it is only working for 10 minutes and then quitting. So my resolve to get a good walk in as the sun sets sooner and it gets really cold is quickly fading.
I do have a gym membership, but I have to pick up my children from track practice...which means to ... Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:22:55 EST Reflection on October Goals and Goals for November Found a yoga class Tuesday nights.
Did bow to pressure and buy a bag of Halloween candy for my children. Only ate 3 pieces. I am quite proud.
Weight has gone up to 126...Since I was on prednisone, I am okay with that.
November Goals:
Do evening yoga routine at least twice a week and get to yoga class on Tuesdays.
Get back below 125 before Thanksgiving and stay there until Christmas.
Walk/run for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week for a goal of 7 miles each week... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 16:10:47 EST October Goals 1. Increase walk in the park from one mile to two miles 3-4 days a week by the end of October.
2. Now that my children's Tuesday cross country dual meets are finished, find a Tuesday night yoga class.
3. Stay within 120-125.
4. Do weight training once a week.
5. Stay away from Halloween Trick or Treat Candy. Do not buy any. Tue, 4 Oct 2011 20:22:14 EST Reflection on September Well..getting to the club every day just isn't working. I have been going to a local park and walking around the trail outside before picking up the children. It isn't as high impact cardio as I was hoping, but I am outside enjoying the Vitamin D. I am able to get there 3-5 days each week. My weight is staying between 120-125, so I am pleased with September. I am hoping to continue this trend toward wellness eating and moderate exercise.
Sun, 2 Oct 2011 19:48:56 EST September Goals I am very excited to be starting September at 123. I teach and will go back to the classroom next week. My goals for September are:
1. Leave work at 3 PM and go to the club to run 3 days a week. I should arrive at the club at 4. Change get to the treadmill by 4:15 done by 5:00...Pick children up from practice by 5:30.
2. Do an evening yoga routine the rest of the week.
3. Stay between 120-125.
4. Continue to avoid wheat, sugar and processed foods, especially salt.
... Fri, 2 Sep 2011 19:34:43 EST Off I go into temptation... I have done very well this summer. Went from an embarrassing 142 (my highest weight EVER) to a this Saturday weigh in of 126...I have done that primarily by avoiding wheat and sugar and beginning a running program. Today we celebrated my son's birthday. He invited some friends over for a paintball game and asked me to make a cookie cake. Well, I had quite a few pieces of that cookie cake. Tomorrow we leave for vacation. We are only going a way for part of a week, but we are going to sta... Tue, 23 Aug 2011 20:59:53 EST What should my new weight loss goal be? When I first joined Spark People three years ago, I was recovering from a bad car accident and was the highest weight I had ever been..140. For three years, I have dieted and tried to lose weight. I have been between 130-135 for most of that time. When I stopped tracking food and fitness in April because my children were so busy, I figured it wouldn't matter. After all, with all the tracking, i had been unable to lose any more weight anyway...Well in June, I hopped on the scale at 142..OH... Fri, 5 Aug 2011 14:05:59 EST Goals for August In July, I found I had borderline high blood pressure and started avoiding salt. In two weeks, I lost 10 pounds. I also started the couch 25K program. My goals for August are to continue avoiding added salt, continue weeks 2-6 of couch25K. and hopefully get rid of 5 more pounds.

If watching salt intake and exercising well for 2 weeks resulted in a ten pound loss, I am hoping continuing that trend can result in 5 more...

I'd love to start the school year under 130. Sun, 31 Jul 2011 20:53:06 EST Wake up call 140/94 When I was an avid runner, my blood pressure was always low...Usually 105/70. The nurse would check my pulse four or five times before telling me what is was. Three years ago, I injured my back and had to give up running. I substituted swimming for a year and then promoted myself to elliptical. I fell off the band wagon of doing any cardio in May and June. I have begun to do the elliptical again, but with the heat and humidity I am struggling with motivation. Went to one of my speciali... Sun, 24 Jul 2011 22:22:32 EST Empty Nest This week I get to see what life will be like when my children leave for college. Both are away at camp this week. I plan to finish planting my vegetable garden, get the flowers planted around the light house, and do cardio every day. I hope to keep the junk out of the house because there is no one here to nag me into buying it. I have survived my first week of no caffeine and no sugar with only one Mounds bar jumping in. I am pretty proud of that. Next week, I am supposed to get rid of... Sun, 10 Jul 2011 13:24:51 EST Back on Track With my daughter's track season and my son's baseball and track seasons over, it is time to get back on track. Actually, my son has baseball playoffs this week. So the craziness isn't over yet. My goal this coming week is to get to the gym to get my cardio in at least once this week. I should be able to start going to yoga every Tuesday again. That always helps me get focused. I gained 8 pounds during the April-May track season, mostly because I took my daughter/son out to eat on the wa... Sat, 4 Jun 2011 15:22:56 EST To Dream The Impossible Dream I am currently working at a school an hour away from where I live. A job was posted this weekend to work as an admissions counselor for a college 10 minutes from my house. My degree is in teaching, not administration. But I am very tired of losing two hours of my day every day just getting to work. So I have decided to apply. It doesn't even matter to me financially how poorly they pay. If I am given the job, my children would be able to go to one of 25 colleges tuition free. I am now ... Mon, 23 May 2011 12:53:20 EST Getting back on track I am getting myself ready to get back on track. My goal this week is to get to the club and get cardio in at least twice this week. I will be able to get to my yoga class on Tuesday for the first time in a month. I am hoping that will help keep me focused, too.
This was the last year for my son in T-ball. He'll do all star baseball this summer. He hopes he is good enough to play baseball at the middle school next Spring. Either way the endless baseball practices and games of April,... Sun, 22 May 2011 21:42:25 EST Trying to Enjoy the Calm Before the Storm This weekend there was NOTHING on the schedule. Woo Hoo! Baseball tryouts for my son starts on Monday. He'll find out Friday if he has made the team. If he doesn't, he plans on joining the track team. My daughter's track practice started last week. Their first meet is in April. So I have a few weeks where I don't have evening track meets and baseball games. The crazy of April and May is almost here...I am trying my best to really enjoy the calm of the last few weeks of March! Sat, 19 Mar 2011 18:40:25 EST Why is this such a hard concept? When I lived in Seattle and my son was one, I was offered a teaching job. When I looked at childcares, everyone had a signing curriculum. Since I was teaching American Sign Language as a foreign langauge, I thought this was cool! My husband finished his tour of duty aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and left the Navy to buy a dental practice in his home town. I have been trying now for 10 years to let the community know about signing with hearing babies. The babies will begin to sign when t... Sat, 12 Mar 2011 16:28:40 EST I need some friends! I have been playing with a side business of teaching sign language to parents of hearing babies for a long time. I really struggle with getting enough interest in my community. I work about an hour away from home. I am trying to get workshops to happen in that community which is much bigger and more open minded than where I live. It's a college town. I have set up a facebook account about my business. Can anyone do me a favor,? Find me on facebook Talk with Babies in Ithaca NY. I have... Wed, 9 Mar 2011 16:48:29 EST Goals for March Went to the acupuncturist for my Spring check up yesterday. He thinks the idea of fasting during Lent is a very good idea. He also thinks my body is detoxing quite nicely and fasting will help speed up that process. He thinks my chronic sinus problems are due to an immature immune system and a digestive system that is filled with too many toxins. Since I started seeing him last February, I feel so much better. I can breathe through my nose for the first time in my life and am starting to... Thu, 3 Mar 2011 05:10:16 EST Reflections on February I ended February weighing one pound more than I started it...136...Not sure what happened. Probably buying all the snacks for my daughter's track meets. They won't start again until the end of March. So I have a month to get to the club on a more regular basis. Hopefully that will help get the weight off. I am hopeful the snow storms are finished and I can start getting work done outside. There is something about a snow storm and eating. That is a bad habit I will need to tackle. Hopef... Mon, 28 Feb 2011 21:25:54 EST Another Snow Day My children are home again. Another snow day. My daughter was supposed to go to a track meet today. She was leaving school at noon and not getting home until midnight. So we stopped at the store and bought her things to snack on. Now all those things are in the house. I have already eaten two of the cookies. I have decided I am done. I am not snacking on anymore of her stuff. She runs 5 miles a day. She can eat that many calories. Since I don't, I have to admit they look good, but ... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:49:53 EST Preparing for Lent Every year for Lent, I spend time reflecting and deciding what I should give up. At this time last year, I had just started to see an acupuncturist. He suggested I give up wheat, peanuts and dairy. I was really struggling. I was trying but unable to give up wheat. Every day, I would eat one thing that was made of wheat. So for Lent, I gave up wheat, peanuts and dairy. It was amazing the transformation in my sinuses. When I eat wheat, like the wheat thins yesterday, I wake up the follo... Thu, 24 Feb 2011 09:50:59 EST Better Today Was a little better at controlling what I ate today. Did have some wheat thins, but didn't eat the whole box, just had one serving. I even counted how many wheat thins equaled a serving and made myself stop. I was very proud.
Took my son to a place that had batting cages to get ready for baseball. He had today off and it was his reward for getting his National Junior Honor Society application all finished. So he ran, raced, and played with all the inflatable bouncy things there. I... Tue, 22 Feb 2011 20:20:40 EST Monday's Munchies Yesterday with a pending snow storm, my daughter and I went shopping after church. We bought poptarts, donuts, wheat thins. Things to eat for breakfast and lunch if we lost power. Well we did get 7 inches of snow, but did not lose power. That didn't stop me from opening the box of donuts and eating four of them during the day. Oh help! I have been avoiding wheat for so long. Not sure what happened today. Now I will have to spend the rest of the week on the elliptical just to burn off ... Mon, 21 Feb 2011 18:59:25 EST Where is Spring? Normally I dread this time of year. Soon the grass will be blooming which typically meant my sinuses were out of control and I was dragging myself to work. Last year, however, I started to see an acupuncturist that recommended I stop eating wheat. My sinus problem has almost disappeared. When I cheat and have wheat, my head will be clogged. As long as I am good, I can actually breathe through my nose. I have never been able to do that. I have never had a sense of smell or taste. Now I... Sun, 20 Feb 2011 19:57:52 EST 5% Challenge Goals I have joined a Winter 5% challenge. The goal is to lose 5% of my weight in 7 weeks. I am excited to say that the week before the challenge, I lost 2 pounds. So if I can keep this going, I should be able to get below 130 a goal of mine since joining Spark People three years ago. I got an okay to return to work full-time in May. I have been getting a lot of cardio in on my Wednesdays off. I am planning on making the most of my Wednesdays off between now and May. I work for the schools, ... Sat, 19 Feb 2011 10:02:09 EST Back on the Wagon I was doing really well. Then I was hit by a car going through a red light. My car was totaled. Luckily I didn't break anything, but I was really black and blue. That happened January 22. I have used the last 2 weeks to feel sorry for myself by eating, doing no exercise because of the sore muscles and gained way too much weight.
I have decided to be honest, update my weight ticker with my current weight and begin again today. I need to get a referral to a physical therapist. Some... Sun, 6 Feb 2011 14:40:14 EST Water Day One I was surprised at how easy it was to complete my entire work day with only water. It wasn't until I was on my way home that all the food started to really look good. I was on my way to yoga so I didn't want to eat a big meal then anyway. I decided to stop and have chicken soup at Subway on my way.
After yoga, I came home and had vegetable soup and a Quaker Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Breakfast cookie. When I got out of the hot tub, I made myself a smore poptart...I am going to try this a... Tue, 11 Jan 2011 20:05:41 EST Water Many years ago, I read a book Fit for Life. I started to eat his way and lost 30 pounds. I went from 140 to 110. I kept all that weight off for 15 years. Some of it is starting to return and I am not happy. So I got the book back out of the library. Step one in his book is doing a 1 or 2 day water fast. The idea is to get rid of the addictions your body has to foods that are not good for you. I do think there is a valid point to this. It worked wonderfully for me in the past. So nex... Sat, 8 Jan 2011 18:46:58 EST Goals for 2011 Increase fitness minutes to 1500 a month. Hopefully this will include a combination of a weekly yoga class and cardio at the club at least 2 days a week.
Continue to strength train at least 2 days a week.

Try to do sun salutations at least 2 mornings a week and the full yoga routine at least 3 evenings a week.

Diet: Continue to follow the advice of the acupuncturist. For now that means eat beets, sauerkraut daily. Avoid wheat, dairy and peanuts.

Weig... Fri, 31 Dec 2010 19:35:29 EST Reflection on 2010 I saw an interesting article at the club while doing the elliptical today. It was research from John Hopkins University. Basically, it said that once you turn 40, you need to work out an average of 60 minutes a day, 6 days a week to ward off weight gain. At the end of the article, the author wrote that once you reach 40, your goal should be to keep your current weight, not to gain weight. That should be considered a success.
I spent 2010 going back and forth between 130-135. Maybe... Sun, 26 Dec 2010 18:46:59 EST Making the Time I have decided that my Christmas present to myself and my New Year's resolution is going to be making the time to get cardio in during the week. Next week, I am on vacation so getting a daily cardio in shouldn't be difficult. It is when I return to work in January that the challenge will begin. I have yoga classes Tuesday evenings, I am off on Wednesdays. If I can get to the club on the weekends, I should be able to get below 130...I need to be diligent about doing the yoga routine before... Sat, 25 Dec 2010 12:16:06 EST Where has the motivation gone? Daylight savings time has made it cold and dark when I get home from work. I am finding it hard to get the motivation to do anything! I got through Thanksgiving break without gaining any weight. Unfortunately, the snacks in the classroom had me gaining weight before vacation. I had been doing so well in September and October. My goal between Thanksgiving and Christmas is to avoid the snacks in the back of the classroom and try to get more cardio in during the week. I wish I could find ... Sat, 27 Nov 2010 20:57:34 EST Journey to Wellness I was supposed to be better by Monday. I had no voice on Monday. I went to work anyway because I had progress reports I needed to finish. I went to see my doctor afterwards and he told me to stay home until Thursday. I still don't really have a voice, but can finally say a word or two. I tried strength training this morning and that went well. I haven't had to use my nebulizer all day....Hurray! I will finish with the prednisone on Friday so hopefully the weight gain will be gone by the... Tue, 16 Nov 2010 16:51:09 EST Trying to Stay Positive I have tried to do everything right. I gave up wheat and dairy. I followed exactly what the acupuncturist wanted me to do. I even learned the sun salutation and signed up for a yoga class. On Tuesday, I was at yoga class actually breathing in and out through my sinuses for the first time in my life! On Saturday, we took my daughter and a friend out to dinner. I thought I did well. I did eat a piece of cheesecake, but I thought that was better than the wheat in a cake. Sunday I picked ... Thu, 11 Nov 2010 19:20:25 EST November Goals I cannot believe I have gone 30 days without wheat Woo Hoo!
Goals for November:
1. Do the daily yoga routine at least 6 days a week.
2. Do cardio at the club every day after work until Winter Track practice starts.
3. Continue to avoid wheat, dairy and peanuts.
4. Get below 130 by Thanksgiving and stay there through Christmas. Sat, 6 Nov 2010 12:54:30 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 26 I have been doing well. I can breathe through my nose. I have started my Yoga routine. I am not as consistent with doing it in the evening as I had planned. Tomorrow is my yoga class' first meeting. My hot tub has been cleaned and was warming up last night. I had trouble sleeping because I am used to going from the hot tub to my bed. I was so cold. I am so glad it only took one day to warm the new water to the right temperature.
I am looking forward to seeing my allergy doctor.... Mon, 1 Nov 2010 18:56:30 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 18 Yesterday I stopped and bought my daughter KFC for dinner. I thought I was being good and ordered a grilled chicken breast, green beans and potato wedges. I thought that was wheat free. My nose was running all night. I logged on and checked the internet for KFC. The web reports that nothing at KFC is gluten free...Not the potato wedges or the new grilled chicken. That explains my runny nose last night. I have been fine all day.
I am so looking forward to seeing the allergist in a ... Sun, 24 Oct 2010 19:12:27 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 16 Am doing really well avoiding the donuts, pie, etc. in the classroom. Not doing so good avoiding the bag of dove chocolates in my office though. Technically, they have no wheat. I am having an argument with myself all day about them...They are dark chocolate so they hardly have any dairy, go ahead and have some. It's better than ice cream or cheese...
That is the drama in my head. So far, I have only had 8 pieces and I have been staring at them all day...
I will tell the person... Fri, 22 Oct 2010 13:52:40 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 15 It is getting easier to avoid temptation as the days go by. I cannot believe I have been wheat and dairy free for half a month. My nose is completely unclogged. I am sleeping through the night. I haven't woke up to sneeze from 2-3 AM in almost a week. That used to be a daily ritual for me. I go back to see the acupuncturist the middle of November. I am hoping my daily yoga will be a routine by then. The yoga/pilates instructor is coming to create a program for me at my home next Wedne... Thu, 21 Oct 2010 18:26:07 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 10 The sun didn't peak out this morning, but at least it didn't pour! My son ran his 2 mile in 11 minutes. I thought that was really good. I haven't heard how Ingrid did at her race yet. She left school to go to a meet pretty far away. I hope she did okay. She is the fifth girl on the team. The top five places is what determines the team score. Two seniors have been coming in 6th and 7th and telling her they are going to take her spot. I guess they think she should let them win because ... Sat, 16 Oct 2010 20:49:07 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 9 Wow! I can actually breathe through my nose today. How exciting! I forgot my lunch this morning so I had to eat from the cafeteria. I was quite proud of myself. I skipped the fish sandwich and got the rice, broccoli, and green beans. I skipped the pizza and the ice cream. I was really surprised that they didn't look good to me. Dropped by the acupuncturist to pick up my supplements today. Looking forward to the weekend. I wish the cold dreary rain would go away. I have lots of ene... Fri, 15 Oct 2010 20:09:07 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 7 Went to see the acupuncturist today. Now I can breathe through my nose completely. It is amazing what Eastern medicine can do. He recommended a Pilates/Yoga instructor for me to try. He wants me to begin to do a Sun Salutation. He ordered some new herbs my body needs. I will drop by his office on Friday and pick them up. I am wondering how long it will be until I get the results from the blood test for Celiac disease. I would have thought that would be coming soon. Doesn't really mat... Wed, 13 Oct 2010 20:31:55 EST Wheat and Dairy Free Day 6 Long, long day at work...I am so proud though. I was frustrated, which usually means I stop some where and get something inappropriate to eat. I didn't. I went for a long walk, came home and ate my gluten free pumpkin muffin. I was still starved so I made myself a scrambled egg before picking up my children from cross country practice. Went off in the evening to a Parent Support Choir meeting and didn't stop to buy something to eat on the way home. All and all a very good day. Tomorrow... Tue, 12 Oct 2010 21:27:28 EST
