I've moved to the city from the country. Broken up - settled down. Lost a family member, dealt with serious illnesses. And, probably more. I was off line for at least two years. Fri, 23 Jan 2009 22:13:25 EST Long Time No Blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1278677 I was surprised to realize it's been over a month since my last blog. I suppose I've been busier than I realized. I'm pretty much still stuck at the same weight - but considering up until very recently I wasn't able to really exercise - I guess it could be worse. I've been doing some new stuff, even while restricted. I've tried Yoga and I really like it, I've done some circuit training - not too crazy, used a wobble board, a pelvic stabilizer, and I've used our new elliptical machine a li... Wed, 18 Jun 2008 15:33:12 EST Replacing Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1191732 I'm not sure how so many people with serious debilitating conditions are able to maintain positive outlooks. In the scheme of things, this back problem is more of an inconvenience than anything else. For now, it means I can't exercise in the way I would like, I can't sleep in a bed, and I have to let go of my plans to complete a triathlon sprint this year.
Really, how bad is that compared to people with MS, cancer, and others of the many awful bad things that happen to people through n... Tue, 6 May 2008 16:58:15 EST Restrictions, Restrictions. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1157514 Last week I had physical therapy daily and I'm starting to feel an improvement. Yesterday I was allowed to do the exercise bike for 10 minutes. And, I'm now allowed to walk for 10 minutes. I think of it more as shuffling than walking as I can only go at half my normal speed.
The good thing is that I'm 100% focusing on every step I take and every exercise movement I make. Nothing is routine or done in a hurry. So, for now, it's a bout growth in a different way. Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:41:13 EST Regroup and redirect focus http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1130407 Like it or not my back has me well and truly out of commission for now. I've become so focused on my exercise and fitness goals that it's difficult to accept the limitations. Thank goodness for Spark and the friends I have here. Today I am going to think about what I CAN do right now other than exercise. I will set some other goals so I can stay focused on living a healthy life. Wed, 9 Apr 2008 08:15:13 EST Ouch! A little set back http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1106983 Well, of all things - I have a herniated L5 disc. While it was extremely painful for a few days, I am feeling better today. I'm a little loopy from the medicine, but it's working - at last. Put a bit of a damper on my exercise goals and I'm eating way too much candy - my comfort food.
Silly me - I felt something pop last Friday when I was climbing over a fence after fishing a plastic goose out of a creek - (don't ask). I foolishly didn't get it checked and kept thinking the soreness... Sun, 30 Mar 2008 16:21:04 EST The importance of down time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1093130 I finally got some real down time over the long weekend. It seems like I have had so little “free time” since the beginning of the year. I did okay for most of it – staying mostly on track with fitness, nutrition and logging. But not having time to just do nothing can be harmful.
I can’t say enough about how the challenges with my teams have been invaluable for keeping going. So many days I did what I needed to do just because I’d committed to a challenge. My personal goal setting... Mon, 24 Mar 2008 11:29:28 EST Back on Track but needing down time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1053392 I've over done things a bit and maybe set my goals a bit higher than I should have. But, I'm learning. I plan to do a mini-Triathlon on May 4. I probably rushed things a bit with my training plan for this week. This morning I was really dragging. I ran a bit over two miles on Saturday, mucked stalls and toted water for over an hour on Sunday and completed a pretty hilly ride in just over an hour last night. Oh, and I also did weight training for 55 minutes on Saturday.
I have not h... Tue, 4 Mar 2008 16:27:00 EST Total Meltdown http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1039259 The past week or so my eating and exercise plan have been in the toilet. I have not done any exercise except for farm work since last Wednesday. And I’ve been eating more and more everyday. My food choices have gotten progressively worse. I don’t know what’s come over me. But, I need to take control and get rid of it.
I feel like crap, I’m so tired all I want to do is sleep. But, I’m not sick. Yesterday was the worst. Wed, 27 Feb 2008 11:42:03 EST The Lunch Club http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=995664 Well, we started our Healthy Lunch Bunch Club at work today. I made our inaugural lunch with two Spark Recipes and a recipe I've shared on Spark Recipes. We had Caramel Apple Salad and it was sooo excellent. Southwestern Cole Slaw, which was also pretty good. And, burritos made with fat free refried beans. It was a little scary making a lunch for others, but everyone seemed to like everything. We'll be doing it again in two weeks. Next time, I just show up and eat. Friday night a work friend was in from WI and he came over for dinner and a movie with us.
Saturday morning Emy had a lesson so Denise and I dropped her off and went to Home Depot for pipe to run a water supply from the house down to the stable. We also went to Lowes for electrical supplies to run electricity down to the stable.
And, we went to Tractor Supply for supplies - heated water buckets, mineral blocks and feed pans that can be attached to ... Mon, 10 Dec 2007 12:41:07 EST What prompted me to look at my weight and health http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=850129 It's kind of a long story but here goes. I was always pretty active and loved to exercise. I never had a real weight issue until I got pregnant with my now 14 year old. I gained weight pretty fast. When she was about 3 I started exercising again and eating better and I finally went back to what was a fairly "normal" size. That was from 1996 through 2001. Then in 2001 Denise's mother got cancer and we took care of her until she died. We also had her mentally handicapped brother. Durin... Tue, 4 Dec 2007 16:14:12 EST Time to get back on track http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=815210 It was not a good weekend for eating - following a tough week. But, I'm on the road this week which often makes it easier for me to be on track.
Right now I'm still pretty sleepy. I usually take Dramamine when I'm traveling. The plan is to eat some lunch, check out my work duties and go for a long walk. I'm glad today's assignment is cardio. That'll get me out and moving despite the fact I mostly feel ready for a nap. Mon, 5 Nov 2007 14:20:22 EST I'm so hungry..... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=811728 I've been having a tough time this week. So far I've stayed pretty near my calorie limits, but I'm making terrible choices. And, I feel like all I want to do is eat. Could be lack of sleep - I don't know. But, I hate when I get this way. I'm thinking I need to just start reaching for the healthy stuff and that I have too much sugar in my system. All that Halloween candy is too tempting. And, no one else in my house cares on bit what they eat. Fri, 2 Nov 2007 15:48:16 EST Trick or Treat Challenge - My Hero http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=792080 Juliette Gordon Low was my hero back when I was a kid. And, I still have a great admiration for her.
Back in the deep, dark distant past where I grew up discrimination against girls and women was very acceptable. There were few opportunities for girls to play sports pre -Title IX. All the military academies were open only to men. Sexual assault was rarely reported, and when it was....it was okay to attack the victim in court. On and on and on. Sometimes it's hard to see just how ... Thu, 18 Oct 2007 13:00:15 EST I feel good today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=744162 Last night I got the best night's sleep I've had in longer than I care to remember. Could have been one of a number of things that went well yesterday.
After work I went to a new place to run. My chiropractor said that I need to build my running program on softer surfaces like grass or a treadmill. So, the trail I found is a 1.25 mile loop on a historical farm. The actual trail is covered with wood chips. So, it's perfect. I can't wait to go again tomorrow.
Last night I went... Thu, 13 Sep 2007 16:29:05 EST Long Time No Blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=736922 It's been quite a summer. I've been working on a lot of lifestyle changes in addition to the obvious eating and exercise. I started attending Buddhist meditation services weekly and meditating daily on my own. Thanks to Sparkpeople, I'm reading Feeling Good in addition to Slow, Fat Triathlete, and You don't have to take it anymore. All are helping towards my goals. Today I attended an all day Buddhist retreat. It was excellent, but more taxing than I expected.
My weight loss pro... Sat, 8 Sep 2007 21:38:44 EST Summer Fun http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=714231 It's been a roller coaster summer. On again off again with the eating and exercise plan. I got in a lot of bike riding in July and had big plans for August. But, that hasn't been all I hoped for. My goal is to do a Triathlon Sprint next August. The best thing about Spark People and more specifically the Lesbian Cafe team is that no matter how far off track I get, the friends I've made there set me on the tracks again.
I celebrated my 50th birthday back at the end of June and I like ... Thu, 23 Aug 2007 13:15:41 EST Maintaining http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=591120 Well with all the travel I've been doing I'm at least sticking to a program enough to maintain my weight. I haven't lost anything further for three weeks, but I haven't gained either so I guess that's something. I'm trying to mix up my strength training workouts. Jackie Warner of Workout says that in order to get the most benefit from strength training your should switch things up every couple of weeks or so. Last month my LC team had a great challenge that had a new routine every week. ... Mon, 4 Jun 2007 23:46:25 EST Hanging in http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=538368 Down another three pounds as of April 28. So, that was about 1.5 pound loss per week. Seems that the past two weeks have been a struggle on many days. This past weekend I ate sort of the way I used to. Though not as much food as before. It was too much! I can't believe I was once able to finish an entire hot fudge brownie sundae. I could barely get in half. Which is a good thing, I suppose. I counted that as dinner. And we had eaten at a German place for lunch. I had the wienerschn... Mon, 30 Apr 2007 15:40:21 EST Things are going well http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=512863 My weight loss is now 19 pounds and I'm pretty happy about that. I'm even happier about the fact that I'm back on a regular exercise track. I'm mixing things up and actually having fun exercising. I usually HATE exercising indoors. I sure wish spring would arrive. We had that spell of really nice weather and it's been crappy ever since.
The family is in Columbus for the Equine Affaire - leaving me in charge of the homefront. Fri, 13 Apr 2007 14:42:17 EST Rough Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=488482 It's been a rough sort of week. Today I really wanted to hit the vending machines. I came pretty close to hitting the SP panic button. But, I ended up going for a 20 minute walk. Helped a lot and I was pretty proud that I didn't resort to eating out of frustration. I actually set three alarms cause I was afraid I would over sleep.. My cab was scheduled for 5:30 a.m. I made it to the airport before 6 and the lines were unbelievable. Almost as bad as Friday. I was in Bethlehem, PA for a conference that ended the evening before. A Nor'easter was just rolling in as I drove 57 miles south to the Philadelphia airport.
