My upper IT band strain was improving and my last PT session on Thursday was really good. Made one more appointment (thought it would be the last) for next week.

This morning's 10K started out well. I had completed this race as my first 10K last year and was looking forward to besting my time. I was accompanied by the same friend who walked with me last year. We happily came in dead last of... Sat, 4 May 2013 17:06:01 EST A Goal Realized http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5337662 For the last 6 weeks, I've been battling an upper IT band strain. Due to the pain, I was very depressed and withdrew from posting on SparkPeople because I felt I was not progressing. In fact, I was regressing! Inability to exercise without a burning pain wasn't something I wanted to post about.

Fortunately, I went to my local run shop - John's Run Walk Shop - to get a massage ball to try. John recommended a chiropractor who specializes in runner's injury therapy. He immediatel... Sat, 27 Apr 2013 20:40:30 EST The Race of a Lifetime... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5309324 In my last blog, I talked about the Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon as a race I wanted to miss. Well, I did miss the race as a race, but not as the "event" it was. My daughter and her boyfriend and I waited at the starting line during a 15 minute fog delay. Because of the hilly course, the local police recommended a delayed start to let some of the fog burn off.

I decided to get in a 5K at least, so waited for ... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 20:10:53 EST A Race I Want to Miss... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5303477 My "race" blogs may make some of you more seasoned "runners" smile and chuckle to yourselves. I'm not fast and I know it. I do them to give myself goals to set and meet as a sign of progress.

This Saturday, March 30th, I am registered to participate in the Rookie Run the Bluegrass 7 Miler. I won't be participating. No injury is involved. It's a personal choice. I'm just too slow!

My daughter and her boyfriend are participating in the Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 16:28:16 EST Lightning Strike 5K - round 2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5297641 Once again, I revisited a 5K course from last year. This was a rather hilly course - the first of the local school system's Trifecta. A long hill down at mile 1 and then back up again at mile 3! Not something to look forward to as I proceeded through the race course.

Last year's Lightning Strike was only my 2nd 5K ever. I remember dragging my sorry butt across the finish line and thinking I was ready to die! My time was 48:05. I came in 174th of 197 and 6th out of 8 in my age ... Sat, 23 Mar 2013 21:36:17 EST Supporting from Behind http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5290480 This evening I did my 2nd 3K in two days. Wow! And how different can two adjacent days be? Yesterday was gorgeous! Warm temps and sunny, 50 at race time. Today, not so much! 37 at race time and it had been raining, snowing and sleeting within 30 minutes of start time!

Why would I subject myself to this torture? I had a perfectly fine race against my year old time... set myself a new PR, too. Well, I was being supportive of a friend. I've known Scott for a really long time ... Sun, 17 Mar 2013 23:47:59 EST Shamrock Shuffle 3K Revisited http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5288939 Last year, after 3 months of regaining my courage and strength through a walking program, I managed to finish the Shamrock Shuffle 3K in downtown Lexington in 28:09. I was very pleased, if not ecstatic, about my time. I finished 30/57 in my age group and 1839/2377 overall.

It was supposed to rain this morning. It didn't! It was earlier or it felt earlier! The fountain in Triangle Park had been dyed for the occassion!

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.com/nw... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 15:43:13 EST Setting My Goals High http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5281006 Sometimes - strike that! - Truth! Everytime when I decide to set a weight loss or fitness goal, I second guess myself - can I do this? or that? If I tell someone and then fail, will I be diminished in their eyes?

This last week I set the lofty goal of losing 40 lbs by my birthday in August. I told my daughter as she is my biggest supporter. Of course, she responded with affirmatives and encouragement - not surprising. I have not told anyone else - fear factor - fear of commitm... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 10:25:24 EST I've Fallen, but I Can Get Up! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5160522 Going back through the roughly 180 SparkPeople emails I have accumulated in my absence, I came across this from Coach Nancy: "The number of times you fall down is irrelevant. The number of times you have the courage to get back up is what matters."

That's kind of where I am right now. Back in early October I developed a case of pneumonia and had to slow down my exercise program since I just didn't have the energy to keep it up. I recovered enough to walk about 2/3 of what was t... Both of us had signed up to participate, but with my recent illness, I had not run for several weeks and was still recuperating. I was just going to watch...really! I didn't... at least not at first.

I had signed up for the BLC20 Challenge and was placed on a wonderful team - GO MOCHAS! Shortly after starting, I developed a sniffle - no big deal. Tough it up and deal with it. I've had lots of colds. Slowly the sniffle turned into a sinus infection. Finally admitting defeat, I went to my doctor for some antibiotics. For a couple of days everything seemed to be getting better. ... With exercise, give me 2 good hours on Saturday mornings and I can get my mileage in with the best of them! Protein like exercise now there's an issue! and as my schedule gets more hectic, staying consistent with my exercise is a prob... I finished the race in 1 year, 11 months, 28 days, 45 minutes and some odd seconds! Sun, 5 Aug 2012 00:37:07 EST Weight Loss + New Job = New Clothes!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5000235 Okay, so the resignation was received as well as I could have hoped. Today, I took a big step and turned in my resignation on a job I've had for over 10 years! A little scary and exciting at the same time.

I don't know if I could or would have made this move a year ago. Heck, I'm not sure I would have considered it six months ago! Thu, 2 Aug 2012 22:46:36 EST Well, shut my mouth!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4997246 I did a 5K Saturday... no biggie... I knew the course. I'd done it before - twice! I had signed up for the event at the last minute in honor of our Spark Friend LDRICHEL. If she could walk a 5K with an injured ankle, I could walk / jog (a little) a 5K in support.

It was a small event with about 200 runners, but some of them were local high school cross country teams! I knew I'd be pretty far back in the pack, but that's the good thing about a 5K event - you compete against yo... Wed, 1 Aug 2012 23:17:19 EST Okay August, Here I Come! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4996068 I read a blog today by WONDERWOMAN where she recapped her July goals. So here goes....

MY AUGUST GOALS:

1. Lose 7 lbs
- - - started July at 183 and only managed to lose 1.5#. " I could have said that", or "that is so me" thoughts pop up in your head? I seem to do that every day! Sometimes, I'm jealous of the easy way some of my Spark Friends blog. I remembered a walk shortly after my son was born. As I walked at lunch with work friends, we discussed weight loss goals and how I was trying to return to my pre-baby weight of 180 for starters. Well, I'm almost there and it only took 16 years and 11 months!

My next (or first) pre-baby weight goal is where I was before my daughter was born in March 1992 - 160 lbs. Hopefully that won't take 20 years a... Fri, 6 Jul 2012 14:11:58 EST Disection of a Bad Race Performance http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4955577 I was so psyched that today's 10K would be "easier" than the one I did last week. The course was flatter. It was earlier, so it would be cooler... Well, no such luck! Not for me, anyway! My daughter actually ran today almost a full minute faster than last Saturday's race. I actually finished significantly slower.

I was disappointed, to say the least and exhausted. I've been thinking off and on all day about what went "wrong". To put it all off on the humidity would be lookin... Wed, 4 Jul 2012 20:56:27 EST Changing My Body Image http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4952859 This summer, my daughter and I have been participating in 5K and 10K events. She is a "real" runner, finishing 5Ks in the 22's. Me - I plod along trying to get better (and faster) with each event. I'm down to 44:16 for a 5K!

So after Saturday's 10K, on a day that ended up over 105 degrees, I was very sweaty and cranky about the heat. I had not gotten my daily dose of SP blogs! I have gotten accustomed to reading my morning emails and reading the blogs of my current SP friends and the highlighted blogs. In my journey to a hea... Sat, 30 Jun 2012 20:57:13 EST Morning Motivation - Make My Day! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4945850 I look forward to opening my email and seeing what new tip or blog entry from SparkPeople appears overnight. In fact, I've come to miss them if I am too busy or have to wait until later in the day to read them. The motivators are sometimes there just for me (or so it seems!) - pointing out that there are others that struggle just as I do - prodding me to do just one more thing to achieve my goal - or just saying way to go! The tips are very helpful - sometimes just tweaking knowledge I alr... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 08:44:32 EST I must be CRAZY! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4931297 I did something totally crazy yesterday - I signed up for a half-marathon! Yes me, who a year ago groaned at the thought of trying to walk around the Arboretum ( a 2-mile loop). I've been walking since January and will complete my 8th 5K event this coming Saturday and my 2nd 10K event in 2 weeks. I'm anxious for the 10K, as it is a hilly course, but I've done one and feel really confident I can improve my time. My goals are simple - finish (and don't be last, if at all possible), but prim... Mon, 18 Jun 2012 10:25:39 EST Argue your limitations http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4922284 Yesterday, a friend commented to me that I looked like I had lost a bit of weight and asked how was I managing it? “Walking a lot”, I said – over 250 miles so far since January! I mentioned that I had just that morning completed my 7th 5K “race” event this year (and 1 3K and 1 10K). I expected a “good for you” like most of my friends, but instead received a sharp rebuke, “with your knees!” Stunned, I smiled and said I was being careful, but would continue. Granted I walk most of the time... Mon, 11 Jun 2012 20:51:53 EST 20 Lbs down and counting http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4822512 Why would a 58 year old with two bad knees start on a journey to lose 90 lbs? Some days, I ask myself that very question! But then I remind myself that I'm worth the battle. In August 2010, I has knee surgery for a torn MCL. This was followed by another procedure in March 2011 on the other knee. Over last summer I was not able to walk much more than a slow mile without pain. I watched my already serious weight problem worsen. My sedentary job as a computer programmer did not help. Whe... Thu, 5 Apr 2012 21:54:54 EST
