Yay! It's been steady and I even skipped right over 157, bam! Just right on to 156 for me. One reason for my recent success is that I've been a hiking fiend the last few weeks. 11 miles, 7 miles, 8 miles, give me miles, these are not for the faint of heart or those whose mantra is not “I think I can, I think I can...”. I've got mountains of great hiking right out my back door and it's the kind with calorie burn extra credit because it's uphill, both ways. Ok, I know y... And how that never happened before?? Well. I wasn't so successful in the great state of Alaska. They all it the Last Frontier. Yeah, last frontier of beer. The beer was good and abundant and too tempting for me to turn down. I probably drank 3-4 almost everyday I was there. I drank it at tasting rooms, at bars, in restaurants, on patios, and on hikes! I even had a one at Denali National Park.
I'm not a big beer drinker,... Thu, 29 May 2014 00:15:10 EST New York, New York! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5695132 I went to NYC with my mother-in-law, God bless her, if you know what I mean. ;-)
She's a trip. Grew up very privileged, very spoiled and her world view is way, way far from mine. She used to live in NYC and still has season tickets to the opera. Her husband can no longer travel and she's 87 and wanted to see the opera and the city and her friends ONE MORE TIME. Before you-know-what happens. So, I volunteered to take her and my hubby stayed with his dad in Austin.
I love NYC. I'm a n... I am very happy about this. How'd I do it? Simple, I ate good food, not too much and exercised like a fiend. Almost every day.

I am motivated by three upcoming weddings in the family, the first one on August 30th in western Massachusetts. The second one is in Tucson Sept 20th and the third, my son's, is next April. I am going to look fabulous at these weddings. I will not be the "fat one". That will be my sister... Spark keeps me honest and gives me the motivation I need to stay on track with food and exercise. I track my food everyday (ok, *almost* everyday). This helps keep panic to a minimum because I can track all my meals in the morning and relax, knowing what I will eat, that it's enough food, and that I will be within my target calorie range. Actually, I've been so busy that my Sparking is anything but relaxed, it's a few minutes here and there and done way too hastily and sloppily and I missed last Saturday's weigh in completely! Yikes! I've never done that before.
But summer is here and things are going on. Plus, I have far too many projects going on and am being pulled in a zillion directions. I DO MISS my Spark! I find I don't spend much time on Spark unless I'm part of a challenge. I do log in and track what I eat every day, yes, I still do that. But then I leave without doing much else. Very little blog reading and I love reading all your blogs! And of course, no blog writing. Well, let's get this party started again and I'm going to spend the next couple of days getting caught up on everyone's wonderful blogs and checking... You are an amazing group of people and your determination is a great motivator even for someone kind of exercise crazy like me. At first, I didn't understand the concept of "not competing" at all. I was like that meme with the newer Star Trek captain that always starts with, "How the hell??...." Here, I ... I love hiking, it's my cardio of choice but what with the winter weather and my hubby's knee injury from skiing over the holidays, I haven't been out nearly as much as needed for my mental health (which may explain a lot!).
So I left hubby at home and went by myself to a county hiking area called Horsetooth Mountain Park. Miles and miles of trails and great views and best of all, other people and cell phone coverage in spots (HIGH spot... Sun, 7 Apr 2013 19:38:06 EST The Blog about BMI http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5311471 Body Mass Index, based on height and weight, is just one measurement of health but since the health industry is focused on it and it tends to be present on any weight loss tracker, it's a number that we all keep a wary eye on. Am I right? Personally, I think the body fat percentage number from my scale is a more accurate description of how much fat I am carrying around as the BMI does not take into account bone density or age. But, whatever. BMI is an important measurement and I am consistent... I never though much about opera until I got together with my husband other than to think it was a bunch of fat ladies in Viking horns singing in that way I used to imitate as a kid when I'd belt out "God Bless America" Kate Smith style. At Christmas time, I'd do my opera (I thought Kate Smith was opera) version of Silent Night because, gosh darn it, people would ASK ME TO. It was funny, I was probably 5 years old. And that was probably the only time I'd ever called attenti... Set back sounds like it was something that happened out of my control like I broke my ankle or something dire like that, which this failure was not. I was totally in charge. Large and in charge, as the saying goes. What happened was, NO, what I should say is- What I DID was I binged over a long weekend and totally undid all the good eating and exercise I had done in the previous weeks of the 5% Challenge. I was not a runner, ever, except for the 50 or 100 yard dash in junior high and high school, which I could win in P.E. class no problem. Anything longer than that, forget it. Wasn't interested. I hated the way it felt to run.

"5K Your Way" was the program I used to start running and it really works. There's also "Couch to 5K" that takes it a bit slower but ... I've worn them both and made my observations and have come to some conclusions. But, I'm already getting ahead of the story...
So, I want to lose weight, right? And I know the whole calories in versus calories out formula and how you've got to burn more than you eat. Seems easy enough! But I found I only had good numbers for one half of the equation. I faithfully tracked all the calories IN, but how to accurately track the calories out? If I am to lose weight, I need both numbers.... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 11:05:59 EST Day 7 is here!!! Last blog of the week... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5278588 first of all, let me say how much I have enjoyed getting to know my new team from the wonderful and insightful blogs this week. You ladies rock!! And I have become quite fond of this team.

Here's what I want my team to know- this challenge has been really different for me than past 5% challenges I've been in where I was on an extremely competitive team and it was all about posting those minutes as soon as possible and getting the most points possible every day and waiting with bait... Which much horror I just realized that I never did the blog for today so the movie will just have to wait a few minutes because this is SO much more important. So, motivation is clearly not my issue. Now let's talk about what kind of help I need.

I need help with:

181 Learning how to live alcohol-free- we're trying to not drink at ALL but I do admit to having some alcohol with dinner out last weekend and having some champagne at ... Everything! If there was nothing to improve, I'd be my thin and health self already. So the real question, for me anyway cuz I like it down and dirty, is "Why the hell haven't you met your goal yet?"
Gosh, okay, let me come up with an answer that isn't financed by excuses. I have not reached my goal yet because not enough time has passed between when I "re-Sparked" to now for me to have "re-lost" the weight I "re-gained". Re... If you ready my blog from yesterday you know I had a bad scale experience and considered, if only for a moment, I did actually consider throwing in the towel on this whole lose weight and get healthy thing. But, that was yesterday. Today is a completely different story. One day: depression, self-loathing, doubt, frustration, anxiety. The next: top-of-my-game, raring to go, psyched up, happy, self-confident, ready to try new things. Thus is my roller-coas... And this is a perfect topic for me today because my weight this morning is right back up where we started this challenge! no!!! NO!!!!!! And frankly, I don't deserve it. There, I've said it. Yes, I did have a wonderful dinner out Saturday night that included some rolls and some wine and a real grasshopper (made with ice cream!) for dessert but ... (Daily vitamins) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5270965 I have a nifty little day of the week compartment pill box like folks who regularly take lots of med use to help them remember to take them every day. I've had this nifty box for years and have used it with success before. It sits on top of the microwave gathering dust and is quite dingy and unappealing looking. So, I think I need a new box! Will shop for one today.
Then, I just need to fill it up every week and check it every day and take the darn pills. That's not much, eh?
I rec... They taste gross and yes, I can taste them as they pass right on over my taste buds in that quick swallow of water. Plus, they can get stuck! And there's just so many. I've been doing so much research on those glorified pedometers they call fitness devices that I honestly can't remember what led me to discover there was such a thing called Fartlek, much less that it was exactly what I need to improve my running*.
*Disclaimer: I use the term "my running" as a vague reference when referring to my attempts to perambulate at such a speed as to have both feet momentarily and concurrently off the g... I know I am out of order but I love living on the edge that way. ;-)
I have been assigned to the Casual Travelers team and was quite aghast at the idea that I am on the ONE team that does not "race". Beer! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5222865 I live in Fort Collins, home of New Belgium Brewery and a bunch of other ones so beer is definitely on my radar, especially "Belgium style" beers. ((Editors note- Teresa would like at this point to disclaim any notion that she currently enjoys beer. Beer = Liquid bread, remember that.)) So when my hubby says we are going to Belgium, I think not first of the chocolate (I know, I know, messed up priorities.), but of the beer. Belgium beer is, in a word, yummy. Or maybe - tasty. Or some word tha... We were in Brussels, Paris and Amsterdam. It was wonderful even though, I kid you not, it rained EVERY dam day we were there. Even the days where the sky looks blue in my pictures (976 taken!), it rained at some point. Do not go there at the end of November.

Belgium is known for it's chocolates, right? For those of you keeping score, that's the third week in a row. Got to see him for two nights last weekend and not at all the weekend before. He comes back late tomorrow night. He'll be here a week and then go back. It's a great opportunity for him but he's who I hang out with so it's like a double whammy. Anyway, am happy with that starting weight, had been up quite a few pounds but buckled down in aim to get a 140 starting weight for the challenge and I pretty much got it so that's good. Will be losing the same pounds I lost in the Winter 5% but THIS TIME, I will keep them off because it's no fun having to keep doing it over and over. And I remember how good 133 fel... Sat, 17 Mar 2012 21:14:54 EST Great Hike Yesterday and Boy Do I Need It! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4784766 Lately we've been eating out like it's going out of style and you all know what that means. Well, not all of you. I realize that some of you actually have the ability to walk into a restaurant, identify something on the menu that has very few calories, order it and consume it and enjoy that. Not me. I've tried, I have. I just can never FIND the low cal item and if I do it really sounds more like punishment than dinner. So for me eating out = weight gain. I know that and that's why I usually a... Mon, 12 Mar 2012 23:56:34 EST Discombobulated -or- How http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4751561 I've never been one of those girly women, the kind that are really soaked in self-awareness when it comes to hormones, periods, PMS, every inch of their bodies, and all of that. I took my periods as they came, dealt with it, and got on with things. Once I got the hang of tampons, made a habit of having extras on hand and knew that camps could be overcome with tylenol, I was good to go during "that time". I suppose it helped that I didn't get my first one till I was 14 and that compared to the... I have logged 66.8 miles so far, which, when I look at the map of the whole walk, seems like just the tiniest little smidge of progress but hey, I am now passing Richmond VA so at least it's interesting!

Richmond VA is an independent city and not part of any county, weird huh? I've never heard of that. That's a whole layer of government they just don't deal with. How do they do tornado watches, I wonder? And what about the we... I wanted some motivation to keep moving forward and had seen several people on Spark come up with their own virtual walks to some where. I think one lady was walking to South America to visit her daughter? Cool idea, but I am to... Mon, 30 Jan 2012 13:31:29 EST My Virtual Walk Across the U. SHIRES! Now, I have to go there for sure.
Anyway, Jamestown was established in 1607 and the good people there thought they'd take up silk cultivation with the court of King James being their market but sadly, a fungus among us destroyed their mulberry trees (which is what si... It's about 3000 miles, so not for sissies or the impatient. I've seen other Sparkers do virtual journeys but since I don't have any particular destination in mind, this appeals to me. Plus, I love the U.S. and plan to learn along the way.

My good Spark buddy Nina sent me the link after she mentioned it in a blog or comment. I don't watch her show, I don't watch any cooking shows, but I know who she is and that her reputation is for high-fat, high-calorie food. I also know she tends to have a devil-may-care attitude about the health value or impact of the food she promotes both on TV and in her cookbook... Fri, 20 Jan 2012 15:11:38 EST Be Accountable for your own sinking ship! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4691227 I am sure we were all a bit horrified by the news story about the cruise ship disaster off the coast of Italy. Mistakes were made and lives were lost. The thing about the story that bothers me most is not just the report that the captain abandoned the ship and refused the Italian coast guard's order to reboard it, but how he refuses to accept blame for this small part of the story by telling outrageous lies about HOW he happened to be off the sinking ship before all the passengers. I've read ... Thu, 19 Jan 2012 12:27:35 EST Apparently, I've been an ST slacker! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4689429 All during 2011 I did Strength Training by myself, at home, using either the SparkPeople videos or SparkPeople exercises using hand weights, the resistance band or the exercise ball. Or I found some videos on YouTube or I tore routines out of one of my fitness magazines. I made sure I worked out at least twice a week, did each set to muscle fatigue, and rested at least a day between these ST workouts. I also changed my routine about every six weeks, going from weights to ball to band, etc. So... Wed, 18 Jan 2012 15:21:17 EST Nothing much going on here... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4687121 but I need to blog so I am!
Had Randy take some pics of me in my sexiest bra and undies today. Had same pics taken three months ago. Even though weight-wise there's only a few pounds difference and I am getting down to a good weight, I can still see where I've lost fat since then! Yay! Wish I had done pics from the start, duh! For those of you just starting, do the pics!

My undie pictures will NOT be posted here.

Here's my favorite monster of all time. I feel like... Tue, 17 Jan 2012 15:09:29 EST Coach Nicole's new DVD really IS GOOD http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4684697 Thanks for all of the DVD suggestions on my last blog. I went to Target today and bought both Coach Nicole's 28 day BootCamp DVD and Jillian Michael's No More Trouble Zones.
Spark has a link to a $3.00 Target coupon but darn if I could get that sucker to print. I tried different browswers, different operating systems, etc and then I went to the store and talked to the guy in Customer Service. We tried getting it to print from their kiosk and same deal, says we need JavaScript. Funny, bec... Mon, 16 Jan 2012 15:05:00 EST Looking for DVD recommendations please! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4682707 Hello Spark peeps,

I need Strength Training ideas. I've spent the last year doing ST Mondays, Weds, and Fridays and I've done free weights, power yoga, resistance bands, and swiss ball. I liked all of that but want to mix it up some and do something else for a bit. I like doing DVDs but cannot seem to find one that is just ST, they all like to throw in cardio at the same time. I like cardio but I like to do that separately. I get that doing ST does raise my heart rate, but I don't ... Sun, 15 Jan 2012 18:56:57 EST FB/TWITTER sharing? ARE THEY NUTS!?!?!?!? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4679087 Hello everyone!

Saw THETURTLEBEAR's status about HEALTHYBARB1 posting how to turn off FB sharing and I said to myself, "WTF?!?" Cuz really, who among us want our Spark blogs all over FB? Or Twitter? (I see there's also sharing it on Twitter.)
My FB and Twitter family and friends and business associates and stalkers and strangers who follow me or people I've friended and now don't know how to gracefully 'unfriend' all don't need to be privy to the nitty gritty blog postings of... Fri, 13 Jan 2012 20:25:01 EST 371 days later, I met my Spark goal weight! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4673611 I said this is my year of "I DO", meaning that I would take everything I had learned during my first year on Spark and apply it during my second year with no faltering and no excuses. I know what I need to do to lose weight, I just didn't always do it. Plus, sometimes when I did do it, nothing happened. We've all been there (and yes, we do need a scale-bashing emoticon!). But since I did manage to lose 25 pounds, something I was doing was working so that's why I want this year to focus on wha... Wed, 11 Jan 2012 11:10:40 EST My Annual New Year's Trip to Sun Valley, Idaho (or, why I love ID!) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4667019 We go every year to Sun Valley, Idaho for New Year's with Randy's family. His parents live up there half the year and always spend the holidays up there. I love the place. I love Idaho (we got married there, in a field covered with wild flowers) and it's fun to get away from everything and be with his family and whichever of our kids can make it. It's always different and there's tons of things to do if you like winter sports. I got sick though, with a sinus infection (felt more like strep to... Sun, 8 Jan 2012 20:20:29 EST
