It was a tough day. It was one year to the day when my husband passed away and I lost my best friend in the world.

Tommy used to love to post pictures of beautiful nature scenes on his Facebook page and he would always caption them "God's Creations". I thought yesterday about how he was one of God's amazing creations and what a huge loss it was when he left this life, but what a wonderful gain for heaven.... Sun, 20 Jul 2014 00:37:25 EST A few more pics from vacation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5739321 I've been home from vacation for a week and I'm just beginning to get back into some sort of routine. For starters, the morning after we got home my laptop messed up after my virus protection ran an update. It was a few days before Jeremy (my son) got it fixed for me. (Thank goodness my child is an IT person.) Now I can try to catch up on some of my blogging!

After we got off the San Juan River, we stay a couple of days in Mexican Hat, Utah so the guys could see Monument Valley... I'll get to it all eventually, but for now I'll start where I left off.

On June 23rd, we arrived at the Recapture Lodge in Bluff, Utah to prepare for our launch the next morning. We rearranged our gear and put everything in dry bags before attempting to get a good night sleep. We're in Moab, Utah right now and staying busy, but wanted to take a few minutes to try to start catching up here with blogs.

I'll start with the first few days we were here. We arrived in New Mexico over a week ago and we camped the first two nights at Abiquiu Lake. The weather was gorgeous and it was great seeing my nieces while we were there.

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.com/nw/1/7/l1... I'm working tonight, but when I get home my son and his best friend will be waiting for me. I'll take a quick shower and then jump in the back seat of my car with my pillow and blanket and let them drive.

We'll be away for a couple of weeks, but I'll be checking in occasionally when we have a signal. The plans are all complete, reservations are all made, permits are in hand, gear is packed, and new tires are on the car. Yes, everything is going exactly as we had hoped when we began making these plans over a year ago. Except one thing. Tommy will not be with us.

Although Tommy did not k... I have stood on the banks of that river many times and have always been amazed at the beauty of the water flowing through that red canyon country. It was just a dream, but we talked about it a lot. Then Cliff’s friend Mike started kayaking with us and he joined in our talks about how much fun it would be (even though he’s ne... Sat, 24 May 2014 19:41:13 EST Dan River Kayaking http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5694134 I really had the perfect Mothers Day. I spent it in a kayak on the Dan River with my two sons. Afterward we went and had Mexican food for dinner. I was tired Sunday night, but it was a good tired. This is just a short clip of me going through some small waves. The laughter was partly because it was fun and partly because the water was really cold. LOL Tue, 13 May 2014 11:45:26 EST Laughter is good for the soul http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5681936 I drove to the mountains Friday morning to meet my cousin. We spent the weekend doing nothing but having fun, talking and laughing. Honestly, it was the most fun I've had in many months and we plan to do something again soon. It had been about six years since we last saw each other, so we had much to talk about and catch up on.

We started by having lunch in West Jefferson Friday and then driving up to Whitetop Mountain. Sun, 27 Apr 2014 21:47:07 EST The Importance of Friends http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5664294 The last several months have been a roller coaster of emotions. Some days I feel determined to plow forward, while other days I simply want to stay in bed and let the world do its thing without me. The loss of Tommy, and then Thor right at Christmas, creeps into my mind daily. I suppose it always will. At first, I tried staying very, very busy to keep my mind off things, a form of avoidance I suppose. Still, it worked. Then I had the foot surgery and was off my feet for weeks. That lef... When my Thor passed away I was heartbroken and couldn’t imagine bringing another pet into my home too quickly. But things don’t always go as planned.

I picked up Thor’s remains on New Year's Eve and will very soon be returning him to his rightful place with Tommy. Mon, 23 Dec 2013 10:19:27 EST So Much To Be Thankful For http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5549847 With Thanksgiving only three days away, most of us are thinking about all that we have to be thankful for. My first thought was that I would love to forget 2013 because of the loss of my husband. Indeed, it was the hardest thing I've ever faced in my life. But as I reflect on the entire year, I realize that I have so many wonderful memories that I don't want to forget.

This year, God gave me so much time to spend with Tommy doing the things that we loved. Most importantly, my youngest son, Jeremy, got married on October 4th and I'm very happy that I now have a wonderful new daughter-in-law, Rosa. I felt so honored that they wanted me to perform the ceremony. They were married at a park close to my home with family attending. It's wonderful because it gives us time to plan mini weekend trips when we want to, and that's what we did this past weekend.

I'm so fortunate to have a wonderful aunt and uncle who are very good to us. They live in Florida, but they have a mountain home just north of Jefferson,... Wed, 5 Dec 2012 18:48:02 EST A Gift To Enjoy For Years http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5149449 Tommy and I went to the mall Monday to pick up a few Christmas gifts. As we were walking along I saw a pet store that I had never seen before (I rarely go the mall). I walked inside and saw a wall of cages behind glass containing many different breeds of puppies and an equal number of shoppers on our side of the glass looking. Beside each cage was a slip of paper showing what the monthly payment would be for each dog. It didn't say what the actual cost of each dog was and I didn't ask. I... Wed, 28 Nov 2012 11:42:49 EST Vacation in Florida http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5142629 Wow, it’s been a busy two weeks. We were in Florida last week on vacation and had a wonderful time. It was so nice to get away and just relax with family.

We first traveled to Palm Beach where we stayed with my sister Joyce and her husband Kurt for three nights. On Tuesday they took us out on their boat to Peanut Island where we spent several hours grilling out and hiking around the island. On Wednesday, we went to a couple different areas where we hiked. It’s a lot different ... Wed, 21 Nov 2012 13:40:10 EST Fun with the Family http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5110608 I had a great two day break from basement cleaning while my sister and brother-in-law were here from Florida. Yesterday we headed for Hanging Rock State Park and did a 4.8 mile hike to Moore’s Knob. The leaves were beautiful and the weather was perfect. It was tiring, but so much fun.

They brought their two dogs (Kirby and Kody) along, but we left Thor at home. I felt kind of guilty, but I know he can’t walk very far without getting very tired and sore so we opted to leave him ... Tue, 23 Oct 2012 23:19:33 EST Tommy's Latest Scan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5105870 Wow, I feel like I’ve been away from SP for a really long time. Actually, it’s only been a couple of weeks and I have been checking in briefly each day. So much has been going on in my life that I feel like I’ve barely had time to breathe.

As the end to Tommy’s break from chemo was approaching, he went to get his next scan. Waiting for the scan results are always a nervous time, so I managed to busy myself - REALLY busy myself. My son Cliff and I decided to do some much needed ... Sat, 20 Oct 2012 10:39:07 EST My New Kayak http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5025070 Thanks to everyone for your words of support in my early purchase of my kayak. I feel really good about it today and started my day with a light and healthy breakfast.

After breakfast Tommy and I drove to the cancer center where he had to stop by and get his port flushed out (it has to be done every eight weeks even when he's off chemo). After we left there we drove to Greensboro and picked up my new kayak - YAY!!!

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.com/nw/7/4/l... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 14:41:58 EST My Broken Deal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5023947 I made a deal with myself that I would buy the new kayak I want for my birthday if I lost twenty pounds. I’ve been doing even better than I expected and I’m down about eight pounds already. I still have twelve pounds to go, but my birthday isn’t for another five weeks. So how could I possibly justify backing out of my deal and buying my kayak before I’ve lost all twenty pounds and before my birthday? I can’t.

But that’s exactly what I did. Cliff, my son and my biggest support ... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 20:26:22 EST
