It had stormed earlier and now it was just drizzling. My son didn't think another thing of it and put on his boots, I reminded him to put on his raincoat. Personally I think the rain added some character to his walk today. I also put on my raincoat and we headed out.
As I was walking the track this afternoon, I was doing some reflective thinking. Two of my friends declined to wa... Fri, 21 Feb 2014 22:47:51 EST Adjustments....
I'm still learning and making adjustments! I realized this walking plan succeeded in keeping me walking during the winter months, spending time with the kids & other families and I reached my goal of our family participating in the Bridge Walk. I loved the interaction with others. I also learned that more people equals different walking paces!
So I'm adjusting....this cannot be my only walk of the day! For this sea... Thu, 20 Feb 2014 08:53:43 EST Walking Plan 2014 update
It's been over 6 weeks already! I can't believe it. The plan has been working great! One family joined us immediately. The kids quickly got use to the routine and the daily expectation of walking. We started bringing soccer balls too to work on skills or play soccer afterwards. Several weeks into it, another family joined us. Interestingly, over time, the group has gotten more consistent. We only missed 2 days in the 6... Tue, 18 Feb 2014 06:37:41 EST Walking Plan 2014 Happy New Year - 2014! Our community has a walk in a little over 6 weeks, so I put out an email to some friends asking if anyone would like to form a team. I then also asked who would like to start walking beginning Monday - naming a location and a time - Monday through Friday daily whoever can attend. I hope to have some takers! I have a plan, put out a request for supporters and have an end goal! This might be a great walking start for the new year!
I've had a walking buddy in the past... Sat, 4 Jan 2014 11:32:06 EST Tweaking Along It's amazing when you are on a roll, how you just keep tweaking along. Looking back at January, hubby lost 18 lbs! Woohoo, congratulations to him. I am so proud of him. I lost 4 lbs. I am thrilled that I did well through the holidays and we managed to get on track nutritionally in a team effort.
Looking ahead my goals this month are consistency with exercise. Mon, 4 Feb 2013 21:03:25 EST Tweaking My Fitness and Nutrition Goals

As 2012 ended and the new year began, I continued to work on my goals. I just looked back and took notice of the tweaks I have made over the past month. The week before Christmas, hubby and I both got Fitbits. Now this was a new step, I had one on my wish list. As I was doing my research on them, I found a two pack so I asked hubby if he wanted one and he did! He has not been on my fitness journey with me ... Sun, 20 Jan 2013 05:41:38 EST Getting creative with my exercise plan

Tonight I did Walk Away the Pounds (WATP) in the family room while I was with the whole family. In the past, they’ve joined me. However tonight we were crunched for time. We do a good bit of read aloud reading. I read a chapter from my book first. Then my hubby read a chapter from his. When it was his turn to read, I had to get creative. I put on WATP with no volume and followed along with the steps while he was r... Tue, 27 Nov 2012 20:29:54 EST Thanksgiving Day Challenges

Today is Thanksgiving. When I thought ahead to my plan, I thought I would watch my portion sizes, eat 3 meals, exercise today and allow myself dessert. Well, things certainly have not turned out the way I planned.

Always plan ahead and be prepared with a back up plan.

Hubby made a big breakfast, which actually ended up being brunch. Mon, 19 Nov 2012 09:15:52 EST Incorporating "Walk Away the Pounds"
I'm experimenting this week. My primary exercise is walking. I usually walk alone so I have to be self motivated. =) I usually walk with my MP3 player playing music or an audio book. I'm delighted to have a few walking partners so I have company 1 or 2 times a week. The past few days I was away and had the opportunity to use a treadmill for those few days. I need to either add something to my routine or change it up ... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 19:52:31 EST Feeling Energized! We are out of town and I am so energized! Before we left I noticed some weight loss. We packed a lot of healthy food to bring with us and we plan to do a lot of walking. I usually walk outside, however there is also a great fitness center here. I have enjoyed 2 days of walking on the treadmill at the fitness center, then relaxing in the hot tub afterwards.

It was delightful! What a treat!

So refreshing to come out of and into the cool air. I feel so energized! Fri, 16 Nov 2012 08:12:32 EST Recognizing and fighting the blahs
The past 3 weeks, the kids and hubby have been sick! We were at the doctor’s office twice the first week and once a week the past two weeks. After each trip, we’ve also been to the pharmacy. Thu, 11 Oct 2012 15:18:13 EST Switching it up a little - an unexpected change up
Today during my walk, I passed by an acquaintance who was out fitness walking in the other direction. She’s an acquaintance as we always seem to be heading in different directions in our lives and today, literally, we were again! I asked she would like some company which she gladly accepted and I switched directions to join her. We switched gears and it was a wonderful walk. I ended up walking 5 miles this morning, moti... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 11:55:49 EST Rewards - How do you reward yourself? !
Rewards. Choices. I realize lately that when our family indulges in a "treat" it is usually a food item - a snack like ice cream - although that's a rare occassion. More likely it's lunch. Or a treat item at the store - Twizzler's are my hubby's favorite! I brought this up to my husband and we talked about it. I'd really like us to consider other small ways to reward ourselves. I have started a small wish list:
<... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 22:08:08 EST 68.3 Miles for September!
I have been keeping track of my mileage –daily, weekly and now monthly. Sun, 30 Sep 2012 14:25:57 EST A Third of the Way There
I realize that I am about a third of the way to my goal weight at this point. I’m doing pretty well with exercise and eating. We’ve had a rough 6 weeks, 3 deaths and 1 birth in the family, so I’d have to say I mostly maintained during that time. Considering it was a time of being on an emotional roller coaster, maintaining then is pretty good. Not only that but having those healthy eating habits and exercising really got... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 08:29:32 EST I'm Grateful for Today: Spending Family Time at the Beach
Hubby, kids and I spent the day at the beach today - swimming in the ocean and playing in the sand. The water temperature was perfect and there was a nice breeze. We realized while swimming that today is the first day of Fall! It was just one of those amazing days at the beach where you don't want it to end. An added bonus - I took my walk on the beach today too as the sun was beginning to set. Sun, 5 Aug 2012 10:44:04 EST Eating Well - Crockpot Style Today
Since I've been focusing on eating healthier, I have had these small bouts of craving for soup. Seems funny to me especially since it's summertime! I was recently having one of these cravings and decided to make Manhattan Clam Chowder - one of my favorites. I realized I was short on fruits and veggies yesterday, so the timing is good. I usually make it on the stove, however I found a crockpot recipe I'm trying.
... I lost 10 lbs in July. I ended up being out of town for 3 of the 4 weeks! Two weeks were vacation and the last week was for a funeral of a loved one. Considering 3 weeks out of town and the strong emotions of the funeral – I did pretty well.
Looking ahead to August, I'm committed and joined the 10 lb w... Today I walked a different route with a buddy. It was nice to spend time with a friend while exercising. =)
We agreed to meet weekly to walk and made a goal for the next month to step things up.

I found this from son's copywork today - a merry companion is music on a journey. A good fit for my walk today. Wed, 18 Jul 2012 09:02:31 EST Walking resources I just discovered that Sparkpeople has a walking guide and walking spark teams. My primary exercise is walking. I haven’t had time yet to peruse it; I bookmarked it to read later today.

kwalking.asp
I’m excited to jump in and learn more. How did I do? I ate pretty well and walked every day with the exception of yesterday, our travel day. I did step on the scale this morning – just to take a peek. I have a few more days until I check it for accuracy due to where I am in my cycle. I did lose a few pounds so far.
Now to get back on track at home. Eating shouldn’t be an issue. It should actually be easier now that I am home. There is less visiting and eating at other’s homes and trying to figure ... Sun, 15 Jul 2012 09:16:48 EST Exercise Buddies The past two weeks I have been out of town and thrilled to have a lot of walking buddies. Mostly it has been my Mom and that’s given us some daily time to chat, which has been very nice. I’ve also had the opportunity to take walks with my Dad and my sister. I’ve enjoyed the change in routine and partners. Mostly it’s nice to exercise and visit with each one of them.
At home, I take most of my walks alone now. In the past I’ve had different walking partners. Sometimes, I walk with my hub... Sat, 14 Jul 2012 07:05:23 EST Who do you exercise with? Last week I walked every day – I walked 2.9 miles daily an increase from my usual 2 miles. Most days I walked with a buddy too. I am doing well away from home and I have good support system here. I am thinking ahead to keep that going when I return home. I am going to touch base with a few friends at home to assist in keeping me accountable with my eating and my exercise. See if I can get a walking buddy for at least once a week.
Who do you exercise with? Do you go solo? Or with a frien... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 06:12:00 EST Staying on track while I'm away from home I’m out of town and you know how that goes. I’m doing the best I can. I took my Mom to a local produce place and we stocked up on lots of fresh veggies and fruit - great prices too! I made 2 birthday cakes yesterday and didn't have a lick! Whew, so my motivation is still running high. I do recognize that I am not even tempted which makes me feel good and strong too. I am trying to eat the best I can where ever I is a little challenging at times. I bring apples with me everywhere, just... Sat, 7 Jul 2012 07:30:18 EST Reconnecting with Sparkpeople With my return, I read through all of my old blog posts. I found it inspiring and motivating to read back through it all. It was a review of my progress, suggestions and things that worked for me.
In continuing my journey, I’m looking back to see what I could have done to help with my slip. How could I have prevented it? What could I have done differently? I needed support, encouragement, motivation and accountability. Yesterday I spent some time on the Sparkpeople site and found encour... Fri, 29 Jun 2012 11:13:23 EST I slipped...and finally found my motivatation to restart the journey I’m back and I’m motivated again. How I slipped away, I’m not sure. I created so many wonderful habits and stuck with them for a long, long time. I came into a very stressful time in my life and that’s when things slowly started unraveling. The thing is I noticed that I was slipping…I’d describe it as crashing…a downward spiral….and I became aware at some point, however I found myself unable to stop it.

The important point is I’m here, I’m motivated. I’ve done this before and can ... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 21:05:19 EST My Husband Accidently Lost 15 lbs! How does that happen you ask? Well, he likes his food. So he doesn't want to make any changes there. He just finally got moving! As summer approached, we walked, biked and swam as a family. It really is that simple. He began doing it more consistently and we are all spending more time together as a family.

We are finally a bike riding family. My son recently learned to ride his bicycle without training wheels! That taste of freedom is always very exciting.

So we'll con... Tue, 6 Jul 2010 05:34:32 EST Adding Variety to My Exercise I finally got a bicycle! I'm trying to add some variety to my workouts. It's been some time since I've ridden a bicycle. My kids were young and I was always walking with the stroller.

Today I took a bike ride with my daughter. We had a good time. It brought back memories of the love I had for my bike as a kid and the freedom it gave me. I shared this with my daughter. She loves her bike just as much! She's interested in learning a lot of "tricks" on her bike. LOL.

I f... Mon, 8 Mar 2010 18:08:44 EST I Traded In My Walkman For an MP3 Player! =) My walking partner has taken some time off due to the cold weather. I needed a new walking buddy. My hubby suggested an MP3 player. I love it! It's about as big as a matchbox. It came with ear buds. Guess what? My old 80s speakers that hooked up to my walkman fit it!! =) I got a real kick out of that.

I'm obviously way beyond the times. I just never listened to music and walked. I have had this boundless energy the past two days! I feel great. I overindulged with food a few weeks ago on vacation. Now I'm back on the path to recovery. Here are the steps I'm taking:
*Eating healthy
*Reducing my sugar intake
*Eating at least 5 fruits and veggies per day
*Protein shake daily in the morning
*Getting enough rest! Wed, 16 Sep 2009 08:54:56 EST Looking for a Solution to a Sugary Birthday Cake? In my challenge to stay on track with my lifestyle change of healthy eating, evitably I stumble on setbacks. Birthdays seem to attract setbacks. Most people prefer or expect cake to be served....sometimes even cake and ice cream. Double blow! Now, maybe I am just spending time with the wrong people. =)
I have dealt with these sugary treats in all different ways - sometimes declining, other times choosing a small portion of ice cream OR cake. Kids birthday parties are the worst! I ... Wed, 2 Sep 2009 20:36:08 EST Exercise: Creating a Routine on Vacation I walk daily. I committed myself to this habit almost two years ago. It is challenging to maintain this routine while I'm on vacation. Our vacation has been busy, catching up with friends and family. I've learned the quickest thing to do is to create a routine for exercise as soon as possible.
We are avid campers, so we are staying at a campground. The first few days, we were so busy, I did not walk. I'm at the point with my walking where I feel uncomfortable with not exercising. I had ... Tue, 25 Aug 2009 11:54:50 EST Are you afraid of regaining the weight you lost? Yes! During the planning stages, I tried to pick paths that would encourage a healthy life style, something I could continue to maintain. My main exercise is walking - it's free and relatively easy to do. I continued to challenge myself as I plateaued. I have also changed my mindset. My goal is to fit in exercise every day. I walk in the mornings. I now look for additional opportunities, like playing tag with the kids for a few minutes. My daughter can run fast and she's a challenge for me to... Tue, 30 Jun 2009 07:29:26 EST Staying consistent when things change..... I had diligently been walking every morning at 6:30 am. I had committed to getting out there early every morning as the morning works best for me and my hubby left for work about an hour later. Well at the end of January, my hubby was laid off. I kept my schedule for some time after that. I later realized somewhere along the way, I got off track. I didn't have to walk any longer at 6:30 am and I got lost in have too much freedom! I stopped being consistent. I was really surprised this occured... Wed, 13 May 2009 07:47:32 EST If your significant other gained weight, would it bother you? Aaaah, this is a tough one for me to tackle. My huby is overweight and acknowledges it. I have asked him many times to join me on my weight loss journey. I have tried to encourage him and motivate him. Nothing works. I realize it is up to him to make the changes on his own. When he is ready, I will be there to support him.
Until then I have encouraged the kids to help me incorporate exercise as a family into our days including after dinner walks, swimming and bike riding with my daughte... Wed, 6 May 2009 01:48:22 EST Cold Weather - Challenged Again! I know exercise is a priority in my life. For Christmas I asked for a reflective safety vest, a flashlight and a sparkpeople exercise set! I was fortunate to receive the vest and exercise set. I love them both. I did buy the flashlight for myself and feel so much safer walking in the dark.
It's gotten colder now, temps are dropping especially in the mornings. Challenged again! I considered joining the Y for the winter months. After much deliberation, hubby suggested we purchase a gentl... Wed, 21 Jan 2009 09:18:38 EST Exercise.....fitting it into my daily routine When I first began my journey, I was looking at making changes for the long haul. I tried to pick exercises that I could continue in all types of weather with our schedule. Mostly, I make exercise a priority. If not, it won't get done. Just like planning my meals for the day, I am also planning my exercise. As I've hit plateaus it's been challenging. Our schedules have changed, another challenge. One of the biggest adjustments I believe is working around the different time changes. I mostly w... Thu, 4 Dec 2008 13:48:16 EST What time-savers help you eat healthy when you're busy? Planning ahead....that is definitely the most important thing for me. If I am aware I have a busy time coming up, I need to look ahead and plan for that time. I also like the use of the crockpot. If I know I am going to have a busy afternoon, I can get dinner ready in the morning by placing it in the crock pot. That takes planning too.
Otherwise, I try to keep some staples in the house and some quick meal ideas always on hand for those times. Goes along with eating out too. I'd rather ... Wed, 12 Nov 2008 08:32:05 EST We Made a Plan for Our Halloween Candy and Stuck to it! We did it! I had a plan for our candy and we did it! I offered the kids each to choose 10 pieces of candy from their loot and we put the rest away. The 10 pieces of their choosing went into a small brown lunch bag and they placed their names on it. The bags got tucked in the pantry for safe keeping....and it helped keep the candy out of sight and hopefully off all of our minds. I offered each child $10 to spend at Target in exchange for their candy. We also particpated in a candy buy back pr... Mon, 10 Nov 2008 06:36:15 EST Lessons I Learned In an effort to conquer a plateau, my friend offered to walk with me over a bridge to give us an upgrade. I gained two things....a longer walk - this walk is 3.6 miles (my usual is 2.5) and an exercise partner. We are only able to meet once a week together to walk. It is still helping me though in my program. In order to meet together, we had to walk right after dinner. With the temperatures dropping, I also found it is much warmer to walk my usual walk after dinner as well now. I have found ... Sun, 2 Nov 2008 06:05:33 EST Big Day for Me Today Today I reached a milestone....I've lost 30 lbs. Wow, 30 lbs so far this year. That's a lot for me. Truthfully when I set out....I'm not sure I could actually "see" myself here. I was excited, set goals and thrilled that I made progress! I've been drinking just water....and a protein shake a few times a week in the mornings.
I've been making healthier choices, staying positive, fo... Tue, 28 Oct 2008 05:50:31 EST Halloween Candy I'm handling Halloween differently this year. It's tough to have all of that candy in the house! It's has no nutritional's not good for me, the kids or hubby. I've come too far on my journey to let this time of year be a trigger for me.
This year I am making a plan. I told each child they could pick 10 candies to save from their loot. I am getting rid of the rest! Instead I will replace their candy with $10 and take them each to Target to choose a special gift instead. I bel... Tue, 28 Oct 2008 05:43:28 EST Adding a hill......a bridge if needed........ I've needed a challenge recently. Hit a plateau. I've been considering walking over a local bridge. My friend decided to accompany me and we took on this challenge last week. It's a 3.6 walk. We enjoyed the walk. It was great to walk with a friend and the time flew by. I've been walking 2.5 miles almost daily. I did feel the difference in adding the hill to my walk. We've decided to each add this to our routine as a weekly walk. My thighs felt so strong - like tree trucks afterwards! And I a... Tue, 28 Oct 2008 05:41:05 EST Great Way to Get Started!
