SUETEA's SparkPeople Blog SUETEA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Twelve Goals for Twenty Twelve I’d rather hoped to have a list of goals for next year done by now, but it isn’t happening! You read lots of great stuff about goals – but what to believe?

The most common thing I have read is how goals need to be SMART, that’s okay, but how do you weigh that against all the stuff you read about “shooting for the stars”?

It’s the “A”, you see.

Why set a goals that has to be achievable? Surely that isn’t a shot for the stars, that’s something within your reac... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 14:25:36 EST An Interesting Article on Shopping Carts! This is a copy of a post from the Harvard Business Review - part of the HBR Forum, The Future of Retail, I thought you might find it interesting.
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------

A couple of months ago, I found myself, of all places, in the research lab of one of the largest shopping cart manufacturers. I had been invited to preview a prototype for the future. It was a whole new area of study for my ongoing investigation into the p... Fri, 9 Dec 2011 13:37:15 EST Madness Town was mad today, as was the supermarket. Why do people feel the need to "stock up" for one day of the year? It's not like the shops aren't open the day after is it?

I wonder if it will get better (less people), or worse (more people) as it gets nearer the big day?

In other news - I'm doing alright! The cough is still awful - woke me up at 6am today - but probably getting better! Diet is good - food today has been lovely - lots of vegetables and fish. Smoked salmon fo... Sat, 3 Dec 2011 13:45:02 EST WINNER!

Woop Woop!

Just 50,460 words written in 29 days. A whole day to spare - which is unusual for me, but I made it!

I have to say at this point, that the book is pretty awful, but that is not the point. The point is to WRITE - all 50,000 words in just 30 days. For all of you who have thought about/dreamt about writing a book, I urge you to try this, you will learn so much! Not least about how not ... Tue, 29 Nov 2011 15:23:54 EST Another Plug For Azure! I posted a blog a while ago, detailing my experience of the Biggest Loser Challenge, and my time with team Azure - may be you read it? May be you missed it? Either way, I am doing it again, because we are in the last week of this round of the BLC and I am going to miss my little team so much!

This past 11 weeks have gone so quickly it is amazing. In that time I have made some great friends, learned a bunch about healthy eating, been cajoled into trying new foods, including "super f... Obviously I am in for a cold, but my tonsils are red and angry and I could cry every time I swallow. It was interesting running a meeting this afternoon when I could hardly breathe!

Oh well, what ever will be as they say. I just hope what ever it is comes and goes and gets out of my life pretty quickly! Tue, 22 Nov 2011 13:47:20 EST Started Alright then went downhill.

Q. Do you know how long it takes to eat 520 calories of chocolate?

A. 12 minutes.

Need I say more?

15 Mon, 21 Nov 2011 14:04:47 EST Busy Day I got up at a reasonable hour! That meant I could spend an hour or so writing this morning, which in turn meant I caught up from not be bothered to write last night! Always good to be on track.

Lunch was veg soup with a ciabatta roll with butter - so nice to dip in bread and butter!

After lunch we hit the kitchen and gave it a spring clean! The fridge got pulled out (OMG!) and the cooker and hubby made various contraptions with bamboo sticks and loo roll (!) to get down ... Sun, 20 Nov 2011 13:54:58 EST My Thoughts - Biggest Loser Challenge Who knew? BLC has been going for years, but until 3 months ago, I had never heard of it! It seems that many many of you have though - and for that I salute you. I filled out the form and asked to join - I thought it may help me reach my goal as things had got a little stale on the losing weight front!

I was surprised when I was accepted into the BLC and in my chosen team - Azure Destinations. I have to admit - I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for. The rules wer... Fri, 18 Nov 2011 13:41:41 EST Veg Bound! I got my veg box yesterday, so have eaten well today! Unfortunately the mushrooms were bad, so they went in the bin, but everything else is lovely. I cleared out all the old veg and made soup for lunch - that consisted of half a head of broccoli, 10 carrots, 3 parsnips, 1 swede, all topped up with water and a veg stock pot. I had a mega bowl for lunch, and have two more portions, one in the freezer for later, one in the fridge for tomorrow. Yummy!

We ran, then I made dinner - baked... Thu, 17 Nov 2011 13:16:25 EST Non-Day A day when I took a day's holiday from work to attend the hospital for a pre-op appointment, and ended up spending hours on the phone, doing a bit of writing, running and cooking!

It appears that my appointment was cancelled, along with my operation, pending a further consultation that has been booked for January. Pah! I could scream at them! I was all organised, work re-arranged, holidays booked, recuperation sorted - then BAM. Oh - we aren't doing it now. Grrrrr. Flipping consult... Tue, 15 Nov 2011 14:28:34 EST Quick One! I was sat at my desk at 7.50am this morning and worried it was going to be a long day - but I need not ave worried - it went in a flash. I have been really busy all day, which makes me happy, because I hate days that drag.

I have eaten well (mostly) and experienced the delights of Greek yogurt for the first time in my life! So tasty and so lacking in calories I am a complete fan! I put a spoonful of cranberries in the pot and it filled me up for hours! I need to buy more! :o)
... Mon, 14 Nov 2011 14:11:21 EST Not Enough Hours! Another one of those days where there just are not enough hours in the day. I had a long list of stuff I wanted to do, about half of which have actually got done. The other half will have to wait until next weekend.

I did get some cooking in - I now have stewed cranberries to put with my Greek yogurt tomorrow, and some flapjack with apple, walnuts, cranberries, cherries and seeds. Lovely - the house smelt wonderful as it was cooking. Then I made roast beef and all the trimmings for... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 15:23:25 EST Shopping! I love shopping! Spent all afternoon in and around town - it was wonderful therapy! We stopped in Nero's and had coffee and a bit of cake for lunch. So nice to be out and about.

Nothing of note purchased, but that wasn't the object of the exercise - it was just nice to get out of the house for a while. The sun shone, and the sky was blue. Nice change from all the rain we have had of late.

Dinner will be Thai prawn curry (when I make it!) and a big pot of stir fry veg - a... Sat, 12 Nov 2011 12:16:33 EST Rain & Cancelled Operations! After such a lovely summer and autumn it's now decided to rain, and rain and rain. I know many people will welcome the rain, especially the farmers, but give us a break hey? No doubt the next problem that will come along is flooding - well, there is always something isn't there!

Bad news today - I got a letter saying my operation had been cancelled - by me! I didn't! It took me two hours to get an answer to the telephone, but I finally spoke to a very nice lady in Admissions who co... Fri, 11 Nov 2011 13:13:50 EST A Day at the Office So, a long one full of meetings in tiny rooms crammed with sweaty bodies. Yucky yuk yuk!

All went well, but it would have been better if I had worked at home, I would have got a lot more done.

Food wise, I have eaten quite a lot today - could have been better - could have been worse! Exercise has been pretty non existent, apart from a short walk at lunch. I need to get in some strength training, so I will work through my list of exercises in a moment.

In ot... Thu, 10 Nov 2011 13:34:11 EST I need more hours in the day I don't know how many times I have said that, but I do. There is just so much I want to do, need to do, could do. Oh well, I'll just have to squeeze in what I can.

Weigh in showed a half a pound loss - which is amazing considering what I ate yesterday. Maybe it hasn't had time to show up on the scales yet! :o) Anyway, that was good. Also good was my food choices today - sooo much better than yesterday! I have also done my strength training, but no cardio today. It has rained all da... Wed, 9 Nov 2011 14:50:07 EST Oops! Having cracked WIWS (Weigh In Wednesday Syndrome) by setting myself Wednesday goals (with the help of my lovely team mates in Azure) and not over eating just because I've already weighed in, I now seem to have a problem with Tuesdays!

I'm normally pretty good on a Tuesday, with the threat of Weigh In Wednesday looming. Today - it all went out of the window. I was so hungry yesterday - I went to bed hungry - woke up hungry, so have made some bad choices. Mainly consisting of the "c... Tue, 8 Nov 2011 14:16:48 EST I Have a Clean House! Finally, after five hours of hoovering, washing, polishing and dusting, the house is almost respectable! I have been threatening to clean for the last month or more, but there was always something else to do - usually something a lot more fun!

Today, there was no getting away from the dust and the dirt - not to mention the dozens of spiders that I have made my home, their home.

Just to prove how bad it was, I emptied the hoover three times!

I am happy to sa... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 13:07:39 EST Busy busy busy! I may have bitten off a bit more than I can chew!

In addition to working full time, trying to be a reasonable wife, cleaner and cook, get in 60 minutes of exercise a day, eat within my calories by eating real food (therefore cooking from scratch every meal), and taking an active role in BLC for Azure Destinations, I have, in my infinite wisdom, once again signed up for NaNoWriMo. That's National November Writing Month to the uninitiated. That's writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 da... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 15:35:18 EST It is Worth It! All that chocolate avoidance, running and strength training has paid off big time. Weigh in today showed a loss of 2.25lbs! That's the biggest loss in a week I have EVER recorded! Needless to say, I am a very happy bunny. 450

I took a day off running today - well, everyone deserves a rest day, and it is my first in a week! I haven't taken a day off strength training though, and have already done that.

I went to the dentist too. Such a brave girl! I told her s... Wed, 2 Nov 2011 14:32:09 EST Chocolate Avoidance I have spent the entire day trying not to eat chocolate! People at work brought it loads of the stuff, along with toffees and every other kind of sweet stuff you can imagine. Obviously the habit of buying sweets for kids on Halloween is alive and well in the UK - except most people didn't manage to give any of it away!

I won the battle - but I can't tell you how hard it has been.

I'm hoping the lack of sugar will get easier over time. At least I am working at home tomorr... Tue, 1 Nov 2011 15:54:38 EST Five in Five Yup - I ran again! Just short of 3 miles today - but a run is a run!

I also did my strength exercises through the day - my wall push ups whilst waiting for the kettle to boil are a sight to behold! I also do squats whilst cleaning my teeth, and calf raises while washing up. No "I haven't got time" excuses from this lady! Sixty minutes of exercise done!

I have eaten well, with soup for lunch with wholemeal bread and a yogurt, and baked potato, ham and salad for dinner. A... Mon, 31 Oct 2011 16:04:31 EST Chicken! We had intnded to go surfing today. The weather forecast was for a remarkably mild day considering it will soon be November, and the surf forecast said 12 foot waves! We checked out the webcams, and there was a significant lack of people in the water, but we went anyway.

Boots, wetsuits and boards packed in the car, we set off for the beach. When we arrived there were just a couple of cars there. Mmm. Got out the car and the wind hit us. Brrrrr! Cold! We walked down to the sea and ... Sun, 30 Oct 2011 14:58:34 EST Three! Three runs in a single week! I haven't done that in a while, and I feel great for it. The day started late, as it couldn't be bothered to get out of bad, but I made it eventually and went into town to do the weekly shop.

I bought a load of vegetables and fruit - we will eat well this week! I have every intention of making lots of lovely soup too - that is going to be my standard lunch for this week, and probably through the winter now.

This afternoon we plodded. It driz... Sat, 29 Oct 2011 14:20:35 EST Twice! I ran! That's twice in a week - which is something of a record for me of late! I set myself a goal of 600 miles this year, and I currently have 476 in the bag - some way to go with only 4 weeks until my operation and likely zero miles for December! I make that 124 miles to go - 31 miles a week. Mmm - not going to happen! Maybe I need to be realistic and reassess that goal down to 500 miles. It will still be a record for me since I started plodding back in 2007. Last year I recorded my highest... Fri, 28 Oct 2011 15:08:54 EST Long Day Hi All

Well, I managed to spend all afternoon at the hospital today! It should have been a quick Consultant appointment, but he was running late. I waited an hour and a half to see him, then got sent down to Admissions to get my pre-op and operation appointments. I finally got out of there nearly four hours later!

The good news is that they are going to fix my leg - on 25th November! I am so happy! That works out brilliantly for me as I should be up and running in 4 week... Thu, 27 Oct 2011 15:36:34 EST I Ran! Finally - I kicked myself up the backside and dragged my sorry self out for a run / walk / run thing! I felt so good when I got back, as usual I was disappointed that I hadn't gone out more often!

It was a long sleeve shirt kind of day today, which meant quite a chilly start, but I was cosy warm by the time I got back. The leg wasn't entirely happy after being stabbed, poked and prodded last week, but I just ignored it and finished my plod with a smile on my face. So nice to be out... Wed, 26 Oct 2011 14:48:59 EST A Ray of Sunshine I saw one! This morning was actually quite nice - but then it rained, and it is still raining! According to the television weather man we have had 3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours - that's a lot of rain.

Work at home today, so as usual, lots done, lots achieved, but I have hardly moved! I have been as far as the kettle on a couple of occassions, but that's it. When the sun was shining this morning, we plotted having a bike ride later, but obviously that didn't happen.
<... Tue, 25 Oct 2011 14:36:44 EST Yawn Back to work - what a come down after a lovely weekend away. Ho Hum.

Boring day spent in meetings and lacking in stimuli of any description. I really was made to be a lady of leisure!

I have battled all day with food - trying to stay away from the chocolate and crisps at work has been a bit of a nightmare. Yesterday (was it only yesterday?) I had a proper breakfast in the hotel. Probably the first breakfast I have ever eaten. I had scrambled eggs on toast - it was lovel... Mon, 24 Oct 2011 14:56:57 EST Wonderful Weekend Not so brilliant on the food front, and a bit too much wine, but lots of exercise has been done!

I have posted pictures on my blog:

10/23/weekend-away/

The details are all there too, so I won't repeat myself here!

Sun, 23 Oct 2011 14:54:37 EST Lovely Friday! I've had a great day! I achieved everything I wanted to work-wise, I have eaten well, my leg is much better, and I booked us a holiday and this weekend away!

We have been discussing for a while now how we can't afford to go skiing this year - we normally go the first week in January, which is the cheapest week of the season, but we can't afford it. No use debating it - we just don't have that much spare money, and neither of us are borrowers, so that's that. But the prospect of doi... Fri, 21 Oct 2011 14:48:25 EST Virtual Meetings I like working at home - even better - I like working at home when technology allows you to be anywhere in the world.

I'm lucky to have a job where technology tears down all the distance barriers - I have a remote desktop, a mobile phone, a headset with a microphone - I can work anywhere. Yet some people don't like it when your physical body isn't sat a physical desk in a physical office with other people. Why is that? In my head it's a trust thing - if I am "working at home" am I ... Thu, 20 Oct 2011 14:49:16 EST Hospital Rubbish Hello World!

Most of this blog I posted on the BLC Azure Team thread – feel free to skip!

Well, what a morning I had! I expected the calf pressure tests would be slightly uncomfortable, and I expected to be there an hour. Instead it hurt like flipping heck - and still does - and I was there for 3 hours! I can't complain - they were very thorough.

I had a physio and two doctors looking after me, I explained all my "issues" and then they took me into the gym. Th... Wed, 19 Oct 2011 14:01:02 EST Grumpiness Oh - hello! How's you today?

I've been a bit of a miserable cow today. Day 3 of my migraine and still the toothache goes on - I've had enough now. Tomorrow is hospital at 9am to get tests done on my leg, followed by dentists at 2pm. Deep joy.

Even though both events fill me with dread, I am looking forward to getting both of them sorted and over with. I don't expect the tooth to be fixed tomorrow, as it is an emergency appointment I anticipate much prodding and a further... Tue, 18 Oct 2011 14:42:02 EST Foggy Monday Hello World!

Well, last night I did my “Abs” DVD – 30 minutes of Jillian torture, but it makes me feel great when it’s over! An hour later I have a migraine. I’m not blaming the workout – in fact I am blaming a sugar overload on Saturday when I ate a whole bag of jelly snakes. Pig that I am. That’ll teach me!

So this morning I wake with that horrible fog that is a post migraine head ache, so breakfast was coffee and Migraleve. In the office today, so an early start and a... Mon, 17 Oct 2011 15:22:20 EST Weekend Wandering Evening all!

Well, we have had lovely weather here today, nippy, but blue sky and sunshine – a perfect autumn day. I have to admit though, it didn’t start very early in this household! It was nearly 10am when I finally crawled out, and probably close to 11am before I was showered, dressed and ready for the day.

We had lunch early to allow time to get stuff done this afternoon, so a quick cheese sandwich with a sliced tomato was eaten just after mid day.

Yester... Sun, 16 Oct 2011 14:22:57 EST Busy Doing Nothing I have had one of those days, busy all day but achieved very little!

This morning I managed to struggle out of bed quite late, and got caught up on a few work bits before lunch. I had some nice cheese, tomato and the usual stuff for lunch and then headed off to town to do a spot of shopping before my scheduled hair appointment.

I hate rushing around town. I had just under an hour and only two things on my list, but I still didn't have as much time as I would like. I ende... Sat, 15 Oct 2011 15:40:09 EST Few Emails & an MRI Hello!

Another day – another dollar as they say. Back to work today, which is always a bit of a shock when you have had a few days off, and probably even worse as it is Friday and I had to go to a hospital appointment this afternoon.

I tried to make short work of my email in-box this morning, being probably the most productive thing I could do with the half day before I set off to the hospital. Just over 100 emails in 3 days. Oh dear! Sad to say that most of them got del... Fri, 14 Oct 2011 14:01:55 EST Home! I’m back!

We had a wonderful couple of days in Cambridge – what a lovely place it is. We have walked miles and miles, shopped until we dropped and enjoyed museums and galleries. The shops are great – lots of individual unique boutique type places – and the architecture is wonderful. We “did” the Fitzwilliam Museum and several other museums hidden inside the various colleges – from archaeology to genetics! We even had a glass of wine in the Eagle pub, where the discovery of DNA is s... Thu, 13 Oct 2011 14:53:04 EST Moved! Today was office move day - so excited to get out of the roof space and into an office where I can see the ground - and a tree! By the time 9am came there was no sign of the guy's who were to help us carry stuff to the new office, so we set to and did it ourselves! I moved my boxes, telephone and computer and by 10am had it all set up and back to work in our new home.

In other news, I did meetings, drank coffee and wrote reports. A very short week for me as I have tomorrow, Wednesd... Mon, 10 Oct 2011 15:01:33 EST Swap you! Spookily my toothache has gone away – I am very relieved – it’s a pain I hate! Only to be replaced by a pain in my arm! What’s that all about then? I seem to remember doing something yesterday that caused my elbow to hurt (I broke it a few years ago), now I can’t straighten my arm! Perfect excuse for not carrying anything – which is equally perfect as I am moving offices tomorrow! :)

This morning was a late start for us, crawling out of bed at gone 9.30am. I had a couple of cups of... Sun, 9 Oct 2011 14:01:39 EST It Rained! I know, this is the West Country, and it rains! However, it's been very dry this year and it actually hasn't rained here for ages, until today.

This morning I was late up - nearly 10am when I crawled out of my pit. I didn't grub around - that was actually the first time I woke up, so I must have needed the sleep. Quick coffee and I was out the door to get the shopping done. Not ideal when it's raining, but needs must and all that. I finally got home at about 1.30pm and we had a lat... Sat, 8 Oct 2011 14:53:44 EST Doing Good Hi all! Friday at last - took its time didn't it!

Worked at home today - always a joy. I even woke up before the alarm went off. Strange that, I have taken to waking up in the morning this week, rather than being woken up. First time in my life I have had a few consecutive days of that. Maybe it's my age! :o) Anyway, up and at my desk nice and early and lots done this morning.

Lunch - same old salad and cheese with yogurt for dessert. I added some sweetcorn to my salad f... Fri, 7 Oct 2011 15:33:24 EST Post! I just love the internet. For loads of reasons!

1. I can meet friends from all around the world, who willingly give me support, a shoulder, a kick.
2. I can find almost any piece of information I may need.
3. I can find pictures of almost anything.
4. I can read the papers without the paper.
5. I can read all the celeb gossip without my hubby knowing!
6. I can keep track of my diary, my to-do list, the food I have eaten, the exercise I have done, the weight... Thu, 6 Oct 2011 15:11:37 EST One Little Box I have spent the day sorting out my desk at the office - we are moving down to the second floor on Monday and as I had some spare time, I decided to have a clear out! The net result of eight years of work fits into one small cardboard box! Everything else is either in the bin, or has gone in the recycling bins!

You would not believe the rubbish I found lurking in my desk drawers. Well, actually, you might, but it was all quite disgusting. Including: several jars of coffee (one only... Wed, 5 Oct 2011 14:47:35 EST Work, Quiche and Tarts! Happy Tuesday!

How are you doing? I’ve had a pretty good day today – and I got out for a run!

I’ve worked at home today, thankfully without any technology issues I’m pleased to say. I got loads done and worked solidly through until lunch. The usual cheese, salad and yogurt for lunch, most welcome.

After lunch, work, work, work. I took half an hour mid-afternoon to do some baking. I made a bacon, onion and cheese quiche for dinner, and three little Tarte Au Cit... Tue, 4 Oct 2011 15:21:46 EST Work, Quiche and Tarts! Tue, 4 Oct 2011 15:21:42 EST Technology Failure Earlier today our house "went dark" - the broadband failed! We were not alone, BT Broadband had some "issues" with a key server hub in Birmingham. We are nearly as far as you can get from Birmingham, but no service here for about two hours. It didn't help working from home you know! I ended up stood at the bottom of the garden with my iPhone and my Smartphone trying to get enough of a 3G signal to get my mail! :o) Amazing how lost we were without it!

I have spent most of the day st...
