Thu, 22 Dec 2011 13:59:00 EST Back after a brief SP hiatus... I hope everyone is well. I see that I have not written a blog since July?!? Eek! Here's a brief recap of what I have been up to-
I continued my running and finished my first Half Marathon on October 23, 2011 in 3:05:12. Not a remarkable time, but it is about what I expected. I plan to write a blog soon full of pictures! The best part of the experience was the last few blocks when my 4-year old son finished the race with me and we crossed the finish line together.
<img src="h... Thu, 1 Dec 2011 11:44:11 EST Long overdue before and after pics I realized a few days ago that I've never told my weight loss story on SP (despite the fact that I lost the weight only after joining SP) and definitely never posted before and after pics.

This is a picture of me at my heaviest (excluding when I was pregnant). This was taken in September 2007, just a month after my son was born. And, yes, most every picture of him for the first few months included him ... Sat, 2 Jul 2011 18:30:04 EST Need advice- kids eating habits I'm a "live and let live" type of person. I really try not to tell other people how to live their lives or raise their kids. Yeah, I cringe when I see a toddler sucking juice or soda out of a baby bottle, but I try not to pass judgement. I know we've all read (and probably written) blogs about our frustration over why other people feel the right to provide commentary on our chosen lifestyles, and yep, here is another one...

I have a preschooler who will be 4 this summer. I woul... Wed, 15 Jun 2011 13:03:41 EST Dumbest running injury to date May 14, 2011 will go down as the day that I suffered the dumbest running injury…so far at least. I took a week break from the Galloway Half Marathon training for the week following my last 10K race. That meant that this past weekend I was supposed to run 8 miles. Running around my neighborhood was getting stale and I was struggling to find a route that long. I decided to take my son to grandma’s for the morning and try out the Paseo del Bosque trail along the Rio Grande.
www.cabq.... Mon, 16 May 2011 12:40:21 EST Run for the Zoo 10K (with pics) Cliff notes- Freakin cold and windy! Even though I had intentions of running the first 30 minutes and then doing my Galloway breaks, I RAN THE ENTIRE 6.2 MILES and shaved 3 minutes off my last 10k race time! My dad, me, and my son did our first race together.

Back story- I was in West Virginia for the week before the Run for the Zoo for a national conference. I brought my running gear (tights and long-sleeved shirts) and ran 20-25 minutes twice in the mucky, humid mornings befor... Wed, 4 May 2011 13:58:58 EST Come check me out as the new Albuquerque Running Examiner A few weeks ago, DH and I sat down to discuss our budget again. He has been unemployed since June 2009. We have both been trying to come up with other ways to bring in extra income. He mentioned I looked into it and applied to be an Examiner for my local area. There was a position open for someone to write about local running topics. My application and writing sample was accepted and my first article was accepted by the editors over the weekend. They added a picture, but ... Mon, 2 May 2011 14:13:24 EST Strategy- Spark Streak 2011 has been a surprise for me so far. I gave my self excuses at the beginning of the year to relax on tracking my food. I thought “let everyone else ‘diet’ for a few weeks at the beginning of the year. I’ll indulge. I was good all last year…’ Well, here it is, almost April and I am still giving myself excuses why it is okay to eat and eat and eat…

Over the last few weeks, I would raid the fridge and/or pantry as soon as I got home. I would eat okay all day at work and would... Tue, 29 Mar 2011 14:02:41 EST My first 10k race (with pics) I told myself late last year that I would do the Shamrock Shuffle 10k race on March 13, 2011. I finished b210k in January 2011 and thought getting to the 10k race in March would be easy. But...I got sick (twice) and we had sub-zero temperatures for a few weeks. All of those things kept me from running and I had lost hope of being able to do the race in March. Somehow I found the motivation to make that race happen, so I kicked my running into gear in February and registered for the race o... Wed, 16 Mar 2011 13:59:02 EST First pair of real running shoes It is all a bit of a blur right now, but I just got back from buying my first pair of REAL running shoes! 334

I bought $20 running shoes from Payless in August 2010. I wasn't sure if I was going to stay committed to running, so I didn't want to make a big initial investment. Those original shoes have seen me through c25k, two 5k races, and b210k. The only thing I asked for Christmas from family was a donation to my running shoe fund. Between my mom, sister, and in-l... Tue, 22 Feb 2011 17:33:10 EST Help me get my mojo back! Second month of 2011 and I have not been doing very well on my Spark journey so far this year. I really can't explain my attitude shift. I started SP in January 2010. I gave up my severe Mt Dew habit (HUGE caffiene addiction) and lost 25 lbs in 2010. I finished c25k and ran two 5k races in 2010. I started the b210k program. So...why am I eating a green chili cheeseburger and fries for lunch today (and not for the first time in 2011 either)? I made it through all the holidays last year,... Tue, 15 Feb 2011 14:42:09 EST My letter about SP just got read on the radio! I listen to 100.3 The Peak (in Albuquerque) most weekday mornings. Yesterday, the woman dj on the morning show said she was starting Weight Watchers again. She had lost 60+ on the program in the past. They read letters from listeners every morning so I thought "WTH" and wrote a letter.

Well, they did the "listener e-mail bag" this morning and read my letter! After she read my letter she repeated the name of the website again and said she has heard great things about the site ... Thu, 6 Jan 2011 11:20:31 EST Confessions from my recent trip to Vegas My 3-year old son and I took our first "mom and son" road trip together this weekend out to Las Vegas. Without traffic or weather issues, it should be a 9 hour drive from Albuquerque. We drove out for my niece's 5th birthday party.

My confession is that I ate HORRIBLY just about the entire time we were there. Do I feel guilty? A little. Could I have made better choices? Of course. Is it the end of the world? Nope.

I planned well and packed healthy (and maybe not-... Wed, 22 Dec 2010 18:16:49 EST Another 5k race and my preschool son's first 1k! If you read my last blog, you'll know that I was struggling with whether to register my 3-year old son for his first 1k race. Well, I did register him and we both raced this weekend!

We ran the NM Farolito Trail of Lights in Albuquerque on December 12. I ran the 5k race at 5:45pm and I ran the Kids 1k at 5:30pm with my son. The race was at night because the path was lit by farolitos (or luminarias). We got to the race grounds by 5pm. They wanted all the runners on campus and ... Mon, 13 Dec 2010 12:38:12 EST Running a 1k race with my preschooler? I finally decided to register for a 5k race that will be this weekend. Money is tight and I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money on the $30 registration fee. I noticed that they also have a 1k kids race with the event. I am trying to decide if I should register my preschool son.

I ran my first 5k on 11/7/2010. He was so excited about the race and didn't understand why he couldn't run with me. I told him that only the people with numbers were going to be running, but that... Fri, 10 Dec 2010 13:29:34 EST Me? An inspiration? I posted an update on Facebook this morning. I took this week off after my first 5k last weekend, but got out there this morning and ran another 3.1 miles. I also mentioned that I am starting another interval training program on Monday to get me running 10k. I got the following FB message after my post:

"Hello Heidi,
I am trying to get back to running so reading your post inspire me. Keep up the good work and keep posting!
Jess"

Jessica and I were sorority s... Sat, 13 Nov 2010 11:38:25 EST My first 5k (with pics) I started the c25k program in August and finished the program in 9 weeks on October 16, 2010. I registered for my first 5k race on October 13. The Doggie Dash and Dawdle 5k was November 7. The race benefited Animal Humane of New Mexico. They had a human-only 5k race at 9am followed by an animal-friendly 5k at 10am and an animal-friendly 2 mile dawdle at 11am.

news/doggie_dash_dawdle/
My dog was severely sick last year and couldn’t ... Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:21:15 EST I am a c25k graduate! Yes, I made it through the program on Saturday, October 16. When I started c25k, I was just looking for some structure to "force" me to get out there and actually run like I had been promising myself I would do for months.

My run days were Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. For 3 days a week, my office is 1.5 hours away, but on Tues-Wed, I am able to work out of an office that is a bit closer to home and my morning schedule is a bit more flexible. Somehow I managed to get mysel... Mon, 18 Oct 2010 13:06:54 EST Reality weightloss shows are so frustrating! I don't have time for much tv, but did set the DVR to record "Thintervention with Jackie Warner" on Bravo. I just finished the second episode this morning. In the first episode, she was poo-pooing plain yogurt because of the sugars and putting the sugars from the lactic acid in the same category of the refind sugars in the cookies, etc that the participants had in their pantries. She said that cottage cheese had some fat burning component to it and also said that adding lemon juice to wate... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 12:16:53 EST Why do I still feel so embarassed about my Spark journey? I think part of me WANTS to be proud of how far I've come, so why won't the rest of me let be happy for myself and let others be happy for me?

I joined SP in January 2010 and have lost 19 lbs since then. But, I have changed more than just losing pounds. I think about food as fuel now and care about how I treat my body. I gave up soda (I had a HUGE Mt Dew addiction). Besides milk and occassionally tea, I exclusively drink only water now. I run three times a week now and do it t... Thu, 16 Sep 2010 16:37:34 EST Clan of the Cave Bear Have you read the book series, Earth's Children by Jean M. Auel? The first book is called Clan of the Cave Bear. I am now halfway through the fifth (and last) book in the series. It follows the life of Ayla, a young girl who lost her family in an earthquake and is adopted by members of The Clan. The Clan were Neanderthals and Ayla was one of "The Others" or modern humans. She ends up being cast out of her Clan family when she is barely a teenager and has to survive on her own for a few y... Thu, 2 Sep 2010 13:51:41 EST Simply powerful morning (my first blog entry, please bear with me...)

Once I find a formula that works, I stick with it. I have been having a cup of dry multi-grain Cheerios, a hard boiled egg, and a banana for breakfast everyday for the last few weeks. I usually boil eggs on Sunday evening for the week. But, alas, the hubs had all the pots soaking in the sink. No eggs! :( We were also out of bananas. I told myself that I would just walk over to the organic grocery next door to my work once I got th... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 17:34:12 EST
