STARGIRL20's SparkPeople Blog STARGIRL20's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Back to Working Hard My goal for this summer was to maintain, and I completely, terribly failed. Actually, I began failing before summer. It started in May, then end of the school year. My healthy habits completely fell apart. Over the course of May, June, and July, I gained about 30 pounds and countless inches. When I was in the states this summer, I bought new clothes to fit my new body shape, and by the time I came back to Venezuela, those clothes did not fit like they were supposed to. :(

When I ca... Sat, 13 Sep 2014 07:49:06 EST One Year Ago Today... One year ago today, I ran my first half marathon. It was slow, especially the last few miles, but I did it. It took months of training to be ready for it, and I made it. It's an accomplishment that I still take pride in. If you want to read my post from then, it's here:
ournal_individual.asp?blog_id=5365459.

Running a half marathon wasn't always a goal of mine, but as I started to change my lifestyle, I discovered that it sounded fun, c... Sun, 4 May 2014 15:21:49 EST Processing and Accepting Weight Loss One thing that I find very difficult and not talked about often is how difficult it can be to process and accept weight loss for some people. As a naturally shy person who doesn't necessarily like to stick out of the crowd (although sometimes I like to surprise people), I have a hard time with people making comments about my weight loss. When someone says something, it makes me feel all squirmy inside and want to change the subject right away. Lately, I've been losing a lot of inches and need... Sat, 12 Apr 2014 08:27:44 EST Plateaus and Progress Sounds like a contradicting title, right? Well, it is, but it is also true that there is a lot of progress during plateaus.

I've been on a plateau again recently. I quickly lost my Christmas weight and got stuck right where I was stuck from October - December: 189. Actually, then I was at least able to get it down to 187. Now, I usually don't mind plateaus in my weight. I view them as times where I am able to learn to maintain before switching more things up and working extra hard ... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 05:59:01 EST Vacations and Culture Shock Living in Venezuela, I am able to maintain and lose fairly easily. This is due to several things:
-There are food shortages, where it is hard to find staples like flour, sugar, chicken, milk, ground beef, and eggs. Therefore, I treat these items like they are very special and am careful when I use them.
-I have to walk everywhere, including to the grocery store. Do I really want to have to carry that package of oreos home with everything else that I really need?
-Not only to I ... Sat, 11 Jan 2014 08:04:20 EST Seasons of My Life Affecting Weight Hello SparkFriends!

Sorry that I have been missing from SparkPeople so long, but things have been changing, and I haven't needed it like I did before. Since I was on here last (June since last post), I have moved to Venezuela. Today, I finally reached my first glimpse of ONEderland, being 199.8 this morning. Woohoo! Anyways, what I really want to talk about is seasons of my life and how that has affected my weight. I think it's important for us to realize how different life events/... Sat, 7 Sep 2013 08:07:48 EST Another Week Gone Already? Wow, time sure is flying by. I'm not sure that I will be able to finish all my summer projects at this rate (what I consider my summer is short because I leave at the end of July for Venezuela and have 3 weeks that I will be away before then). Another week down, and not any further weight wise. A few weeks ago, I was hoping to reach ONEderland before my doctor's appointment next week, but now that will not be happening. Oh well, she'll still be happy that I've lost at least 10 pounds since I ... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 12:52:52 EST One Year on SparkPeople As of this week, I have been on SparkPeople for one year! In that time I have...

-Lost about 45 pounds. My weight goes up and down. So many life changes have contributed to it not being more, but I also am not always persistant about eating my healthiest. Personally, slow but steady is fine with me. I am learning how to maintain as I go along, which is the most important skill. Since I've always wondered what other's weight graphs look like here is mine:
<img src="http://phot... Sat, 25 May 2013 11:49:07 EST Indy Mini Sorry that it has been so long! On May 4, I ran a half marathon called the Indy Mini. I finished in 3 hours and 7 minutes. It was great, and I definitely recommend doing a half marathon at some point, even if you just walk it (as long as you train for it properly).

During the week before, I was very nervous about the weather. I had been training in thirty or forty degree whether and suddenly it was in the seventies! I didn't even have shorts that were good for running yet. The morn... Thu, 23 May 2013 09:20:12 EST It's Almost Time! Two days until the half marathon that I have been training for all spring!

I'm getting nervous, especially about the weather. I've gotten use to running in forty degree weather, but it looks like it might be sixty on Saturday! I'm not prepared for that heat! Since its been so cold, I'm great at running when it's cold. Today I tried running when it was sixty, and I found that I don't have appropriate clothing or a hydration system for that temperature. This is not something that I ... Thu, 2 May 2013 19:08:49 EST Finished My 15K Strong! This morning I ran my first 15K in 2:01:49. I pushed my pace the entire time. The race was very exciting and tiring. I just want to sleep and can't because I have other places to go, but oh well. I could always take a nap in a random parking lot later.

Anyways, I had fun. During the race, I had different people that I was by throughout the race that encouraged me. I also saw a lot of people that I recognized from the past two races (these are all prep. for the Indy Mini in May, so ... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 13:12:22 EST The April Push These past three weeks, I've just been lolly-gaging along (not certain that it truly a word, but I think you understand; slowpoking). I've been doing the bare minimum. I did not track my nutrition once since I said I needed to start again. Tracking fitness even went terribly. Part of that is now my Health for Teachers' prof is having us track fitness, and for some reason thinking about having to do both makes me do neither.

I was suprised to weigh myself this morning and still see... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 10:04:12 EST First 10K - DONE! Yesterday I ran my first 10K. It was part of the training series for the Indy Mini that I will be running in May. I completed it in 1:20:08, which was just the time I thought I would complete it in. It was a lot of fun, and I got to go shopping for a proper sports bra for running and groceries. Sports bra shopping did not go as well as I hoped since they didn't have the size I wanted to try on, but I realized I need to get a different size bra than I currently have, which is good.

... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 18:49:49 EST 5K - Woohoo! Runner's High Today, I woke up at 5:30, drove an hour and a half, and ran a 5K: my first 5K as an adult! I ran a 5K when I was 9, but what I remember was stopping so that I could see the police car at the end and then finishing. Anyways, last night I was dragging my feet about going. I told myself, "Do I really have to go? I haven't registered yet. I ate terrible tonight; there is no way I could do well."

Well, this morning I forced myself to just get up and go, despite nerves and not wanting to... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 19:50:39 EST 5 Miles! Or was it 5.25?

Today I ran/walk five miles, running one minute and walking thirty seconds. My overall pace stayed just under 13 minutes, which made me very excited since that is fast for me. The strange part is, I was running on a path that marked every couple of tenths of a mile. I started at 11.5, ran to 14, and ran back to 11.5. That's five miles, right? Well, before I reached the marker, I heard the GPS tracker I use on my phone say five miles. By the time I reached the marker... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 14:32:44 EST Recommitting This past week has been an interesting one. I left Monday night to travel on a bus all night to Washington D.C. with my school. We spent three days jam-packed with touristy activities and walking all over D.C. By the time we left for home on Thursday night, all of our legs were so sore that some of us gathered for stretching sessions at several different points. I had been to D.C. before, so one of the most interesting things was seeing every thing being set up for the inauguration. I then of... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 18:56:03 EST Catching Up on My Blogging Wow, I haven't blogged in a long time. The past month has been a blur of finishing my student teaching, holidays, and moving. Over Christmas break, I did not follow my new habits and gained six pounds instead of getting below 220 like I wanted (I was at 220 but never got around to blogging about it). Now, I'm working on recovering from that.

I'm also working on reforming my habits for this semester, especially nutrition habits. Last fall, I was responsible to make all of my food. ... Thu, 10 Jan 2013 18:25:04 EST 2 Miles! Hi again!

I know I posted earlier today, but there was a lot in that post, so I thought I'd make a new one. I just got back from my 2 mile run. The first time I ran two miles was this summer on a treadmill at 0% incline (didn't realize that it needed to be at a 1-2%), and it took 30 minutes. Today, I worked my way up to 2 miles, following the Couch to 5K program (I did my own thing for a bit and started at week 4 or 5). I decided to time myself today to give me a base so I can see ... Sat, 1 Dec 2012 11:00:18 EST I'm Officially Crazy It's official. I'm crazy. Who do I think I am? Well, I'll get to that in a bit. First, I should wrap up my November goals:
-Track my food at least 4 time per week - Well, I actually did okay on this one... I think. Usually I tracked most days of the week. During some weeks that I knew were harder (past two weeks), I didn't always track hard/bad days such as Thanksgiving. Sometimes I eat so many different things it is simply too difficult to track. Oh well. I need to increase this goal fo... Sat, 1 Dec 2012 08:20:36 EST It's Almost Thanksgiving Already? Another week has gone by already. Time flies by. Following up with my November goals, I did track at least 4 times this week, but a few days might not have been completely accurate in the end. I also exercised more than 4 times this week. I even went for a run on Tuesday, Thursday, and today (Saturday)! I did lose one pound, but I sure did not work hard at the beginning of this week.

The beginning of this week was hard nutritionally. One day, I got addicted to a bag of candy corn ... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 11:52:31 EST 25 Pounds Down! Today I reached 225.2, which is about 25 pounds from my starting weight and a quarter of my way to my goal weight. What a huge milestone! I'm excited to see these next 25 pounds leave and be in ONEderland. I'm still hoping to be at 220 by Thanksgiving.

This week, I did a great job at reaching my November goals. I tracked my food everyday except Friday (goal was 4 days a week). I also exercised everyday, even running outside twice! I remembered how much I love running after I do it ... Sat, 10 Nov 2012 08:57:47 EST New Month, New Goals This past month has not gone well. I did not focus on my weight loss goals, because I was distracted with other things in life. This past week, I have reflected a little on my journey and am determined to continue. This week, I even finally hit under 230!

This past week, I have focused on eating healthy, tracking about half of the days. I also exercised several times. I finally am forcing myself to get into the school schedule I had planned. It even required grounding myself from c... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 21:28:11 EST Refocusing Wow, it's been a while since I last blogged. I was updating everyweek, but then life happened. Since school has started, I have been very busy. I decided that it would be best to start the school year by just trying to eat healthier (more fruits and veggies, less addictive sweets, ect.). It's work alright but not great. I have lost some weight but have not been focusing on this goal. It's time for me to refocus.

Currently, I'm in a back to basics challenge to hopefully help keep me... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 07:38:14 EST Nutrition I've heard nutrition is 80% of our health. The other 20% is made up of genes, fitness level, and other factors. This week, I focused on nutrition, which was hard with having a leaking sink for part of the week. I didn't even track my food; I just ate healthier. I found that I did really well at meals, but snacking after school was a problem. I need to remember to, if I decide to have a treat, pull out the amount that I want instead of eating from the bag, which was then quickly gone (goodbye ... Sat, 25 Aug 2012 09:45:46 EST Not Stopping I've been gone for a few weeks. I found it harder to eat healthy at home, especially since I wasn't making my own food (not that it's really a good excuse). Now I'm back and living on my own, ready for student teaching this fall. I AM going to do this!

This week, I am going to concentrate on my nutrition. Earlier this summer, I did a good job, so I'm hoping I can pick up again. Last night, I rode my bike to the grocery store and stocked my fridge up on fruits, veggies, and yogurt.... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 08:25:39 EST 6 Weeks, 11 Pounds Six weeks into my new lifestyle, I'm down to 239 (11 pounds from beginning). The things that were easy and hard keep switching. Nutrition had been an easy adjustment when I was living by myself, but now that I'm back with my family for a few weeks, I have found that it is a real struggle. I didn't even track a few days this week because it was so bad plus I couldn't even remember everything that I ate. This week, I've had plenty of time to exercise and ran another two miles and went biking w... Sat, 21 Jul 2012 12:56:34 EST Today I Did Something I've Never Done Before! Today is the end of my fifth week, and I'm officially moved home. Following up on my goals from last week, I did exercise once while I've been home and remained very active while I was at my summer job. I also looked up nutritional information online before going out to eat, but unfortunately did not consider it much when deciding what to eat. Tonight, though, my dad is taking me out for dinner, and I looked up the information and decided what I will have based off of it. My last goal related... Sat, 14 Jul 2012 17:12:37 EST I Ran a Quarter of a Mile without Walking!! It's the end of my fourth week, and I weighed in yesterday at 241 (lose of 1 lb from last week, 9lbs total). My nutrition definitely had good and bad days, although I managed to stay in caloric range most days. Fitness was hard to fit in the end of this week because my water aerobics class got stormed out right before I was leaving and it's too hot to do much outside.

This week I ran the loop I've been running twice, which includes a warm-up walking part, an area that is a little ... Sun, 8 Jul 2012 10:00:34 EST Just Keep Swimming! I feel like Dory from Finding Nemo when she is singing, "just keep swimming; just keep swimming...," except for mine would be "just keep eating healthy and try exercising." I do like swimming for exercise though.

It's the end of my third week, and I weighed in yesterday at 242. I'm really beginning to wish I had the money to buy a nicer scale that would be easier to read (maybe even digital), but with another 4 pound drop, it was easy to see that I'm on the right track.

... Sun, 1 Jul 2012 22:05:58 EST Picking Up My Motivation It's the end of the second week. I weighed myself this morning, and I lost 4 pounds from my starting weight (down to 246)! Granted, my weight usually fluctuates between 250 and 245, but I'm glad it went down.

This week has had highs and lows. Some highs were: eating a good breakfast everyday, trying yoga, losing four pounds, and finding a trail to bike/run/walk on. Some lows were: giving into temptations about eating sweets at work (we eat with kids, so there's junk food two d... Sat, 23 Jun 2012 10:32:31 EST First Week Recap This week is what I consider my first week of actually making an attempt to change my life. For the first two weeks since my last blog post, I focused on tracking my food and being aware of what I was consuming. I believe my nutrition is one of my biggest problems. Then, I moved out and am now living on my own with a few housemates. I will be back at my parents' house later this summer, but I thought this change would be a good start.

Since I've been at my new house, I've don... Sat, 16 Jun 2012 10:12:30 EST I'm Back Well, I'm back. This past semester was really busy and stressful at school, so my health was ignored. Not only is my weight an issue, but now it's causing or effecting other health issues too. This summer, I need to make changes in my life. It's going to be hard, but for one month, I will be completely living on my own for the first time in my life. This is the best time for me to make the changes I need to in order to live. For the first time, I will be buying and cooking all of my own food ... Thu, 24 May 2012 13:17:25 EST
