I have not been as active as normal but I am okay with that. Actually it has been self-imposed and I feel much more rested and relaxed from taking a week off. Yesterday I did update my spreadsheet and discovered that taking off some time hasn't really hurt me since it is early in the month. I did pick up the pace a bit more yesterday and that felt really good too. All in moderation.

Last week I was thinking about an old friend from m... Tue, 10 Nov 2015 08:12:25 EST Rested & Relaxed http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6025867 I took two days off in a row from walking. I feel much better today about the whole exercising thing. I have my day planned out and already have 10,000 steps put in this morning from my morning/before work walk. I feel good. Rested. Course it helped having yesterday off from work too. I was able to finally get some car repairs done that I've been putting off. And I did a little poking around/shopping too while the car was worked on. Two whole hours of pure bliss just wandering and loo... Tue, 3 Nov 2015 08:15:21 EST Finding Balance in November http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6024533 As I'm doing my initial sign-in stuff here on SP I'm flipping thru my Goal Board and see "I will have fun when exercising." Last month I raised my step goal back to 700,000 steps, something I had been doing regularly last year but got out of habit over the summer. October was a struggle for me. I had many good step days but only a couple of off days but I wanted more relaxing days. I need to find a better balance. I need to build in an off day into my weekly schedule just for something t... Sun, 1 Nov 2015 07:27:06 EST Getting Closer to Step Count http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6023341 It's near the end of the month. Catch up time on my step goal. I thought I was doing real well then I took a couple days off and - bam! - I'm behind. I track my daily steps in a spreadsheet so I know how many steps I need each day to stay on track. Yesterday when I logged my steps I discovered that I needed 25,000 for the next 3 days to finish the month at my goal. 25,000! Seemed impossible but today I got slightly over 31,000! Woo-hoo! I had to walk three times today to do it but I d... Thu, 29 Oct 2015 20:09:02 EST House Stuff (again) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6022202 We have had a lot of activity on our house lately. Much more than we did over the summer. Even have a showing set up for this saturday from some out-of-state person who is interested. Still no offers. But I have to tell you that I am a bit disgusted by the people who have gone thru our house. We requested that people remove their shoes. Our realtor provided a large pile of booties for people to put over their shoes. Do they? Heck no. And I think just about everyone who has walked thr... Tue, 27 Oct 2015 19:03:43 EST Auction Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6020518 Went to an auction with my older sister today. She likes to go to people watch mostly and see the ridiculous amounts people will pay for stuff. She also likes to pick up bargains and resell them on eBay. I go mostly to just hang out but I, too, am astonished how much stuff goes for. Today there was tons of Fenton glass. They had set up a huge tent and it was packed! They auctioned off each item individually and they were selling for very large sums. Most items started at between $40 an... Sat, 24 Oct 2015 19:16:54 EST Finally! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6015894 I meant to write this yesterday but my students came into the lab before I got a chance.

I have lost 2 pounds this week. I was stuck for months and months and nothing budged but now I am losing again. It feels good. Surprising, but good. I don't feel like I've done anything different than what I was doing before but perhaps I am. I am certainly more mindful of getting in all (or more) of the steps I intend to do each day. Is that the key? I still struggle with the amount of ... Fri, 16 Oct 2015 07:44:33 EST Clothing Joy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6014563 I've been working on minimizing my wardrobe for a couple of years now. I turn my hangers around at the beginning of each season and then donate all the clothing that never gets worn based on if the hanger never gets turned right. That has worked really well, then this past summer I read "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo and it has changed the way I look at my clothes. Certainly explains why those hangers never get turned right!

DH brought up my winter boxes ... Tue, 13 Oct 2015 20:57:31 EST Foot Pain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6012769 For about a month the top of my foot has been hurting. Kind of a burning pain and it is constant. I've tried to take it easy as best I can but I walk a lot at school and I have to walk home from school since DD and I share a car and she needs it 3 days a week for college. It is slightly better when I have shoes on - maybe having them tied tight is helpful. But I have to admit that I am close to going to the doctor about it. Not sure what she can do, probably have an x-ray or something. ... Sat, 10 Oct 2015 17:37:05 EST Realtors - Ugh! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6011211 Realtors, ugh. Yesterday I received a couple of emails from mine. I had asked for the response sheets on the recent showings at our house. Lots of activity lately for some unknown reason. No offers yet (shoulder shrug).

First up - we need to install new carpet in a 'neutral' color. We need to update our countertop in the kitchen to something more high-end. We need to 'restage' the living room with the furniture pushed up to the walls so it seems more open. We need to repaint... Wed, 7 Oct 2015 20:12:53 EST Spark Streaks http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6009121 I am trying to reform myself to remember to log in every day (8 days now). And to log my food (3 days and counting!). And to remember to log my water (8 days). Sometimes I forget to do the water since it is in a seperate spot now instead of being on the opening page. But logging my food again is a big one for me. I got lazy, thought I knew what I was doing, etc, etc. Turns out I am back to where I was before - not eating enough. It really seems like I eat too much but once it is logge... Sun, 4 Oct 2015 13:56:00 EST More Shoes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6008712 Finally had a chance to get my new walking shoes today. Back to Brooks Dyad brand, which I haven't worn in a couple of years. I also tried a pair of Brooks Ghost so it was a tough choice. I'm currently wearing a pair of Ghosts when I am working and have to walk home. Normally I prefer to change my shoes before walking home but since I haven't had any good walking shoes in a couple of weeks my choices have been very limited. The Ghost is a very nice shoe but I like a thicker sole when I'm... Sat, 3 Oct 2015 18:49:38 EST Darn Insurance http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6007221 Got my insurance score back. Got a 0 this year, which is still good since you need a 0 or less to get the insurance break. DH got a -20 again. His 7th year in a row. The real hoot though is that we are both at "moderate" risk for heart attack in the next 10 years based on age alone. So just because we are over 40 (!) we are at risk for heart attack. Good grief. I feel like I'm in the old movie "Logan's Run" where people are put to death at age 32. I walk 11+ miles per day, eat a mostl... Thu, 1 Oct 2015 07:43:47 EST Burgers, birthdays and goals (oh my) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6006923 Today is my oldest daughter's birthday. We are going out to celebrate and I'm pretty excited. I didn't eat much today knowing that I would be indulging in a burger and fries for dinner. I haven't had anything like that in a long time and I'm really looking forward to it.

Daughter is turning 26 which is now the magic 'insurance' number. We have been waiting all month for the formal letter so that she can sign up for her own insurance. DH went to talk with HR last week about it ... Wed, 30 Sep 2015 17:31:34 EST New Clothes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6004763 Went shopping yesterday for some new tops. I am tired of looking frumpy. I've been making do with what I have after decluttering my closet over the summer. I let go of everything that wasn't giving me joy per KonMari program. Turns out it was a lot of stuff. What I kept hasn't been giving me much joy either and I'm not real sure why I even kept some of the tops - probably so I wouldn't be naked.

Remember when stores used to offer Personal Shoppers? They would help you find cl... Sun, 27 Sep 2015 06:33:40 EST Snakes are on the move! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6003440 All this week I have come across snakes as I walk home from school each day. Big snakes, little snakes, giant worms that I thought were snakes. Today there was a good 3-footer in the road with it's head raised. I cross the road to get around that one. And then kept glancing behind me to make sure it wasn't following after I passed it. I absolutely hate snakes.

I am curious why there seems to be so much movement from them lately. Are they looking for their little winter home... Thu, 24 Sep 2015 17:22:06 EST Bloodwork and More Shoes in My Future http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5998348 My annual blood work for our insurance company is this Friday. Last year I got the best score available (so did DH) and our insurance costs went down because of it. I haven't changed anything so I am hoping for the same again this year. But I also realize that it may not happen. This past month DH and I have been very diligent on what we eat though he is a bit of a junk food junkie and I can't monitor him all day. But I think he is being good. Packs a really healthy lunch for himself an... Wed, 16 Sep 2015 06:24:12 EST Allergies? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5996735 It has gotten cooler lately. Very cool. 44 degrees this morning when I woke up. With a drippy nose and a headache like a vise was squeezing my brain. DH tells me it is allergies. I had the same thing a few weeks back when it got cool for a stretch. I don't like it. Never figured I would develop allergies in my late 50's. Why now? I was perfectly fine being perfectly fine. Never having to haul around a box of kleenex everywhere I went. Popping asprins like candy to make my head stop... Sun, 13 Sep 2015 17:34:38 EST New Work Schedule http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5994823 Day 3 of the new school year. DD and I have finally worked out a pretty good car/school schedule. And I will still get to walk most days so that is a big plus. She switched her volunteer day from Wednesday to Friday at the Goodwill Restore. Turns out this will really help them out since the Manager was opening and doing the register on Fridays. DD will now be doing that and training the new volunteers as they come thru. She is pretty excited.

She will drop me off on Friday be... Thu, 10 Sep 2015 13:06:18 EST Oh What a Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5993464 Day one of the new school year. My schedule is quite a bit different than it has ever been. Doing late day classes instead of early morning classes. This is going to cause some problems already as one of the staff that I sub in for during lunch so far I don't have any free time to do that. Not quite sure when or if she is going to get a lunch. Principal and I worked out a 15-minute break for her early in the day (when I first get there) but no actual lunch period. Principal will be mull... Tue, 8 Sep 2015 13:57:05 EST Oh Happy Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5992706 This summer has been a weird one. Lots of rain. It was cool most of the time with occasional super hot & humid days. The past couple weeks have been so incredibly hot & humid it is hard to breathe. I walk in the wee hours of the morning before the heat is too intense. By the time I return to my car each day my hair is dripping with sweat (which I hate). But yesterday it has finally paid off. Since April I haven't lost an ounce. Probably longer but that was the last time I took any mea... Mon, 7 Sep 2015 12:20:33 EST Another Wet Walk http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5991992 Yesterday I went to the park a little later than usual. 10 AM instead of 7 AM. It was different walking then but I did see this young man that I've seen at the earlier time.

Anyway I needed to stop at a Wendy's to use their restroom before taking the long loop. Went in and was getting ready to leave again when I noticed the young man sitting staring out a window. Went out the door and then I noticed it was sprinkling. Got across the parking lot when - yep - it started raining ... Sun, 6 Sep 2015 10:45:48 EST Good day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5991124 DD has been working on her college schedule for the past 2 days. They canceled one of her classes and needs to take 5 classes this term so she can finish within the next 2 years. She is pretty focused right now so them canceling really threw her for a loop. She found something else (an elective) and their assured us that the canceled class will be reoffered during winter term (it better be since it is required for her major!).

Took myself to see "A Walk in the Woods" with Robert... Fri, 4 Sep 2015 20:13:37 EST New Month http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5988851 Last week of summer vacation. It is the week I dread all summer. Where you are trying to shove all the final fun stuff into just a few days. I already know that my hours will change with the new school year. DD and I have worked out a car schedule that I think will work but now with the new hours I'm unsure. Won't know for certain until next week.

New month again. I didn't do as well on my step counts as I had hoped. Actually summer steps were down from my winter ones. No s... Tue, 1 Sep 2015 13:10:54 EST Hmmm (don't judge) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5988143 I have been using a fitbit for a couple of years now. I find it really helps me. Keeps me motivated to continually move and get those steps in. I have a daily goal I set for myself and a daily goal that I actually admit to. They are not the same. My internal goal is always higher than the one I admit to. I am constantly trying to increase my steps. To better myself in some way.

This past weekend I participated in a Weekend Warrior challenge on fitbit. I've done many of them... Mon, 31 Aug 2015 14:15:59 EST Dear Web Page Designer, http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5985203 Dear Sparkpeople web designer(s) - QUIT REDESIGNING! It has taken me a while to get used to the redesign of a few months ago. Still not keen on it but I'll suck it up and keep on. Today I log in and WHAM weird layout again. I had to look for the slider thing so I could put in water drunk, etc. Just leave it alone already! Remember that phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well it ain't broke. Wed, 26 Aug 2015 14:43:48 EST Capsule Wardrobe http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5983801 Anyone on here do the 'capsule wardrobe' thing? I've been reading quite a bit about it lately. It must be part of the simplifying your life thing since that is mostly where I see it talked about.

I've been simplifying my life for years now. Years. It takes a long time to do it evidently. I live in a large farmhouse which we built 27 years ago (wow, has it really been that long). When we first built it I decorated in high Victorian style. OMG it makes me just shake my head ... Mon, 24 Aug 2015 11:38:14 EST Tire Trouble http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5983187 Yesterday and today DH and I biked. It is his favorite thing in the whole world to do which is one of the major reasons for our wanting to move closer to town so we can do it more often. Friday he had the day off and we got up extra early so we could be on the trail by the time the sun came up. We were there all right but it turns out that he had a broken valve on his rear tire and we couldn't do the trail at all. (Well I could but he couldn't). Saturday we had a wonderful ride, it was c... Sun, 23 Aug 2015 13:15:45 EST Ugly Feet http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5982798 Feet. We all have them. My feet are ugly now. After years and years of walking they have corns, callouses, and occasional blister. I have one right now on my big toe. It is dark and ugly and hurts, especially at night when my sheet touches it. I should drain it and be done but I guess I'm not in enough pain yet. Once it reaches its peak pain I will definately punch a hole in it to drain out. Last night I put a blister bandaid on it. Wonderful. I'm not sure how they work but they rea... Sat, 22 Aug 2015 19:40:53 EST Heat and Tomatoes Just Go Together http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5980212 Took yesterday off, something I haven't done in a very long time. Just kind of loafed around the house and read instead. It was really, really nice to do that. Still got in quite a few steps from doing laundry, taking care of compost, moving from house to porch and back in when it got too hot.

Today I was up and at it pretty early on though. It felt good to be back at the park. I took my usual route but in reverse today. Still shaking things up a bit. Stopped at grocery for ... Tue, 18 Aug 2015 12:23:59 EST Sparkgoodies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5978933 Today I earned 100 sparkgoodie points when I spun. Normally I don't like getting those but today I was feeling pretty darn good about myself so I used it to buy myself a new pair of sunglasses. It has been so hot and sunny out that I could certainly use them if they were real.

My good feeling came from my morning walk. I have been sleeping in lately since getting a new pillow last week. My neck pain is gone finally and I am loving that new pillow. It is called Iso-Cool and is ... Sun, 16 Aug 2015 12:25:53 EST Saugatuck http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5978392 Younger DD and I drove over to Saugatuck yesterday. Our first time there. I walked in the morning before leaving since the drive was expected to be over 2 hours each way.

We printed out googlemap instructions on how to get there and then hit the road. I-94 is not for wimps I have decided. I am a very nervous driver on busy highways and I-94 is exactly that, especially during Friday's. OMG I almost got run over by a semi which decided to switch lanes as I was passing it. After... Had quite an awesome streak going and then - poof - it was gone one day because I forgot. Now I am lucky to log in a couple times a week. It just isn't a priority anymore. Where has my SP mojo gone? I still walk faithfully every day. Bike when I can. But the SP spark is gone from my life. I want to get it back, but how?

Our old Saturn Ion has died. It was a very unexpected death. Mice. He has been walking with me in the early morning but also complaining that we are out there walking when we could be biking. He loves to bike. So today we biked after the walk. It was tiring but I felt absolutely wonderful afterward. We were biking into the wind for the first 10 miles and, swear to God, the wind changed direction and we were biking into the wind coming back too. It was wonderful anyway. I felt so alive with the breeze at my face and my... Tue, 4 Aug 2015 16:10:41 EST New Month http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5970271 New month. For the past 2 months I have not met my step goal. Not sure why since it is summer and I am more active in summer, at least I always thought I was. But all this year I've hit 700,000+ steps except in June and July. Weird for me. This past month I had numerous days under 10,000 which I never do! But I had a hard time bouncing back from the Vermont hike, then the problems with the high humidity that made me so sick but really all that is is an excuse.

No more excuses... Sat, 1 Aug 2015 12:13:23 EST Hot Weather Sickness http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5969363 The past week has been unusually hot here in Michigan. So humid even going for a walk at 6AM is exhausting and hot. I have not felt well in days. My blood pressure has been all over the place. Very low one day (109) to mid-130's the next. I have trouble sleeping because I just feel 'weird'.

Last night I decided that while I may not be having a heart attack there was definately something strange going on and I was going to the doctor as soon as I got up in the AM. Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:49:07 EST Trying to Catch Up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5967396 I have been lax in my sparking. There are many days were I just don't bother to log in anymore. I continue to walk and eat mostly properly. But the spark burns much more dimly for me. I need to somehow revive how excited I was before. I need to get a good streak going again.

Our house has not sold yet. We have had 2 open houses which were well received by lookers. Mon, 27 Jul 2015 11:45:37 EST I didn't get rained on! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5960152 Got up and was on the trail at the park pretty early today. Rain was predicted to start around 11 so I needed to be done before that. I get so tired of getting rained on all the time.

I was finishing up and eating my little piece of cheese next to my car when the sky got very, very dark. I drove over to Aldi to pick up a package of Skinnies bread for DD. The rain was just starting as I trotted back to my car and then, WHAM, once I closed the car door it really hit. So I never ... Mon, 13 Jul 2015 13:28:11 EST Bike Riding Fun http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5959207 Today was a pretty amazing day for me. Went out to dinner with a former student last night (and my two lovely DD's) and he wanted to go bike riding with me today. Okay! I'm always up for a bike ride.

Headed out in the early hours. He and I did 20 miles at a pretty leisurely pace. Came home again, ate lunch and then DH wanted to go on a bike ride. Fabulous!

So he and I headed out again on the same trail after my lunch with fresh water. 20 miles later my backside i... Sat, 11 Jul 2015 18:39:36 EST Figure 8 Walk http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5958710 One day I was talking with a fellow walker that I have seen many times. She isn't particularly friendly but I mentioned about the new trail and how many extra steps it adds (if you are counting that thing, which I am). She told me she has been walking it a lot and does a figure 8 sort of thing to get in more miles (she does miles not steps). After she explained it a couple of times it finally settled in my brain. OK, a figure 8 starting from the same parking lot that I use. Hummm..... <B... Fri, 10 Jul 2015 16:47:47 EST Another Walk in the Rain (and what fun it was) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5956900 Yesterday I had to buy a new pair of walking shoes. The ones that I had purchased back in the spring have been hurting my feet since my walk in Vermont during June. They still look fine and I talked with the fellow at the shoe store and he told me to bring them in for store credit since it is past 30 days since I bought them. Even if they only give me a few dollars back it will be worth it.

So I ended up with another pair of Altra's. Actually they are the identical pair that I ... Tue, 7 Jul 2015 11:21:38 EST Challenges http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5953936 Started the Bodyweight Blast Boot Camp Challenge today. 5 sets of 10 reps each of pushups, squats, and seated knee lifts. I also walked an extra lap - 5 today in a light rain. I was very tired when I finished. My feet were aching but I did the Challenge stuff afterward as my cool-down (?). I have been doing pushups anyway but had to add 10 more in today for the challenge. It was harder than I anticipated and, I have to be honest, I had to sit in my car afterward and just rest for a bit.... I've also added in pushups as part of my cool down. I do them there in the park next to my car. Last week I could only do 20 but Saturday I got in 40, which really surprised me. So, of course, since I know I can do 40 that is what I shoot for each day now. Today I was struggling on the last 4 - my arms were just shaking. But I did it and felt really proud of myself. Mon, 29 Jun 2015 17:32:23 EST Another Family Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5951951 Family picnic scheduled for today. It was raining all day so it was moved to my younger sister's house. Older brother set up a canopy that he carries around in his truck off her garage and the grills were set up there. I am giving up meat again so I ate my beans before going over. We took some rice pudding that DD made. Usually no one eats whatever we bring because it is vegetable based, but today - well it looks like we will be taking rice pudding more often. It was a big hit.
<B... Sat, 27 Jun 2015 20:57:16 EST New Day, New Me http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5950863 Woke up today before 6. But today was different than it has been since returning from vacation. Today I was feeling "it" again. I got dressed immediately for a walk. I loaded the car with the recycling (since I would be near there anyway) and headed out.

It was cool today. 64 degrees. Very few people at the park, probably too early. But I put my earphones on and listened to another Hamish MacBeth adventure (Death of a Liar). Almost done with that audiobook. And I walked an... Thu, 25 Jun 2015 13:38:10 EST My Walk (and I'm glad I did it) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5950162 Got back from Vermont late Sunday. I have been fighting the sleepies ever since.

Turns out R is a night owl. She sits in bed with her computer for hours. With the lights on. It was very difficult for me to sleep. She would complain about me snoring but I think it was from not sleeping well.

I had a wonderful time walking though. Got new high steps counts, which made me really happy. I have had a bit of trouble getting back into the swing of walking at the park sin... This has got to be one of the best sites that I have come across. You log in your steps and up pop photos of what you would have passed had you actually been there. I get excited each day when... Thu, 11 Jun 2015 12:40:13 EST Rained on Again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5942853 My first night of sleep without coughing. It was wonderful. Woke up before 6 rested and ready to go. Was at the park by 6:30 thinking I would have it to myself - nope. It was actually pretty busy. Couple of guys were doing their after-exercise stretching. Got in a couple of nice laps and was feeling really good. Had just reversed my walking when it started to sprinkle. What the heck? I check the weather every morning and it said absolutely nothing about rain today. But I kept going,... Wed, 10 Jun 2015 10:16:03 EST
