How sad, since officially it is still summer. But since menopause I just can't tolerate the cooler weather and find myself wearing fleece jackets over my clothes in the house and then adding a heavier jacket on top of that when I go outside. The leaves are really changing now too, I saw a sugar maple in full color splendour while walking near the park today. It is gorgeous to look at but I know what it all means - really cold weath... Sun, 14 Sep 2014 15:55:23 EST Great Biking Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5776791 Today was a wonderful day. DD volunteers at our local Goodwill ReStore and the inner-city trail is right next to their parking lot and it connects to the longer trail that DH and I bike on. So today, with 3-1/2 hours to kill, DD and I loaded my bike on the car and I went riding from the ReStore parking lot while she was working.

OMG I had such fun. Parts of the trail I pedaled my feet off and really got going incredibly fast. Other parts I just pedaled along and enjoyed myself.... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 20:03:35 EST Insurance Health Test Results http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5776116 244 Got my health score today: -20, which is the best score you can get. OMG I am so happy and I owe it all to Spark and how it has turned my life around. Two years ago I had a 6, last year a 3, but this year all the way to the top! I am happy, happy, happy (you can probably tell). Mon, 8 Sep 2014 21:03:16 EST More House Talk http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5775995 This house stuff is leaving me spinning. We had originally planned to sell in 2015. There are some improvements we wanted to make to the house (turns out we really don't have to according to a realtor). Things are moving too fast for me and I feel rushed. The house we are interested in has an offer on it currently but contingent on her selling her own house. We would have to do the same sort of offer and hope to sell faster. But what if she sells first? We would have no where to go if ... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 16:36:21 EST House Hunting http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5774603 I have written about my DH's reluctance to the "downsize/move somewhere smaller plan." Until last week. Last week a house went up for sale on a road that we travel down frequently. It has a couple of lakes on it and a stream that runs behind most of the houses. We know we can't afford lakefront property but would love to live on a stream so we could kayak to a lake. Well last week a house went up for sale that he was willing to actually go look at. And he fell in love! So now we begin ... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 13:45:56 EST Hot Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5774119 Oh boy, today was a hot one. 88 in our building. Just stifling. I couldn't wait to peel off my clothes when I got home and put on lighter stuff.

DD cleaned out our fridge today and put lots of misc stuff in a pan and created our dinner. Leftover beans, potato, tomato. Very tasty. I was very surprised. I never would have thought that beans and potato would be so good together. She continues to amaze me with her cooking style. I'm starting to think she should be looking at c... Fri, 5 Sep 2014 17:20:36 EST September Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5771151 DH and I went for a morning bike ride today. The trail was packed! Packed with bikers of all sizes and more walkers than I have ever seen at any one time. We actually had a hard time getting out of the parking lot after reloading our bikes because of the amount of cars there. It is nice to see the trail utilized so well.

Today is the last day of summer vacation. It makes me sad but it will be nice to get back to work and earn a paycheck again so I can start saving up for my n... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 12:36:52 EST My First Mushroom as Burger http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5770705 Today I had my very first portabello-as-burger burger. I put a couple slices of tomato on it and bit in. Hmmmm, not really a burger taste (DH had grilled it) but it tasted like something. Not mushroomy either. I just couldn't put my finger on it. I would definately have it again though. It was filling and not meat so it meets my criteria.

It's been really hot and humid the past couple of days. I've been trying desperately to get in all my steps before the month ends. Today ... Sun, 31 Aug 2014 21:09:50 EST Rain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5770140 This morning DH and I went for a bike ride at 8AM. It was lovely out, just a bit breezy. We are making really good time on the bike trail when we stopped at the little library box that is located on the trail to see the new books. I felt a couple of sprinkles, no big deal. DH told me to leave the books until our return trip in case it started to rain but I didn't want to so he took down a doggie bag from the dispenser on the trail and I slipped the 2 books I was interested in and placed t... Everything checks out really well except his cholesterol, which is 235. He thinks he is okay because his LDL/HDL were fantastic. But as he was walking in he did comment that he would have to give up eating meat because of the cholesterol number. DD and I have pretty much gone vegetarian but we do still cook meat on the weekend for him and older DD who comes for Sunday dinner each week. Actually I think he will do well on a less meat di... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 14:01:35 EST On Becoming Vegetarian (or at least trying) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5766611 I have been transitioning into a more vegetarian lifestyle this past year. I gave up soda pop a couple months back and I'm very happy I did. I've been trying to give up cheese lately. That is a hard one, it seems to be hidden everywhere. Plus I sabotage myself every morning by taking a cheese stick with me to eat after my workout. I am always so hungry afterward and can think of nothing else that I can leave in my car for 2 hours. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.... Mon, 25 Aug 2014 09:36:06 EST Interesting Week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5764494 Last weekend my DH lost his 87-year old aunt and his 90-year old uncle. On the same day as his own mother had passed away when he was only 2. They all live in the Thumb area of Michigan, which is a 4 hour drive for us from our location. Wednesday they buried his aunt so DH got up early and left the house before 6AM to get there on time. We had already scheduled something for that same evening weeks ago that could not be canceled so he had to drive back home after the funeral. Today he re... Thu, 21 Aug 2014 20:33:03 EST Back Walking http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5762883 Went back walking today after a week off to rest my Achilles. It was slow going but I managed 3 laps (thank you Cindy!) before the humidity got the best of me. I still need to manage a trip to the weight room at some point in the day for some arm work. Started a new audiobook so that helps. "Death of the Kingfisher" by MC Beaton which is another in the Hamish MacBeth series. I'm reading/listening to them out of order and it seems to be okay. Some series you definately have to read in o... Tue, 19 Aug 2014 12:19:46 EST Did that weasel make me fall? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5761561 Waited out the rain this morning and finally got to go bike riding with DH around 10:30. We made really good time too. Didn't see too many other people on the trail until about 8 miles out. It had stopped misting by then and Wow the bikers and walkers were just streaming onto the trail. The weather was perfect for biking - not too cool, not too warm. I had on a sweatshirt jacket over a tank which I didn't take off until 3/4 done with our 20 mile ride.

We were about 2 miles fr... Sun, 17 Aug 2014 17:26:15 EST Rest Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5761026 Today was a rest day for me. And I actually did that. I didn't try to sneak in a short ride, or a short walk or even a trip to the weight room. Nope older DD and I went to an auction today and did some people watching. I also bought the cutest doorstop with a little bronze mouse on it. But mostly we just people watch and get astounded at the prices that people are willing to pay for stuff.

I also cooked a recipe off Spark Recipes for dinner. DH rode the 20 mile trail with me in the morning. Then later my best friend rode it again with me. 40 miles in one day! The early morning trip was windy and I was exhausted when we were done. The later trip the air was still and even though there were a lot more bikers on the trail I was feeling really good and flying down the pavement. I have never felt so rejuvenated, so alive.

My Achilles still aches from whatever I did to it last week. I ... Biking doesn't get my FitBit count up much but it is so much fun that it doesn't matter. My count will be off until my foot heals but so long as I can still bike I'm good.

Went to a get-together last evening with an old co-worker and a former student and his parents. We were sitting around the campfire talking and when I got up to leave I mentioned that I would be biking in the early AM. My old s... Mon, 11 Aug 2014 15:52:37 EST Ode to Beans http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5756772 Well I knew it was bound to happen. I've been flirting with ETL for a few months now and it looks like this time it is sticking. Beans are my favorite food. If I don't get in my cup a day it feels like I've missed something. Yesterday I had such a hankering for lettuce that I opened a bag and sat munching it during our Saturday Night Family movie night. Yes, eating lettuce by the handful like popcorn. DD got a bit upset cause it turns out lettuce is a loud food. Ate half a bag that way... Sun, 10 Aug 2014 09:04:17 EST Still Trying to Hula Hoop http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5755923 That weighted hula hoop is kicking my butt. I am sure I will have bruises tomorrow on my calves but I am sticking to it. I have yet to get more than 2 spins on it before it falls to the floor. I used to hula hoop all the time when I was a kid and with my daughters when they were little. But it's like my body doesn't seem to remember how. I'm sticking with it though, I am determined to get that hoop to stay up. 521
Slept in again today. It was weird but I was wide awake ... Fri, 8 Aug 2014 19:16:46 EST Fun Stuff http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5754653 I am loving this week! Walking in the morning, biking in the afternoon, hula hooping (or attempting) just for fun. I'm gonna hate going back to work next month but for now I'm having a blast.

Hula hooping is not going well. I still can't keep the hoop up on my waist but I did keep attempting for 4-1/2 minutes today. I was able to twirl it on my arms though and can pass it back and forth. The cat likes to sit and watch and seems pretty confused by my antics. Ordered a weighted... It's been there many years, I even had my Lasik surgery right next to it 10 years ago. But I have never visited it until today. It is one of those open air malls, which I enjoy. A really big variety of shops, some pubs, a bookstore (which is the real reason we went).

Anyway we popped into Talbots just to poke. I had seen a s... Tue, 5 Aug 2014 17:06:21 EST That's A Lot of Water! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5753043 Today was very warm, very quickly. Usually the day after biking (yesterday) I just want to do a really long walk. Today was that day. I got up, dressed and headed out to the park. But I was astonished at how warm it already was at 7:30AM. I peeled off my warm up jacket before even getting in the car and headed over.

I'm still listening to MC Beaton's "Death of a Charming Man" so I had plenty to keep me occupied. Mon, 4 Aug 2014 16:01:01 EST Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5751351 Broke my hula hoop today. Not sure how, one minute I'm spinning away and the next the thing comes apart. Luckily I have another, smaller one too. And oddly the smaller one is easier to use. Still can't do for more than a few seconds before it falls to the ground but I've attempted for 2 days now and, I think, I'm getting better.

My DD makes these awesome enchiladas. Tue, 29 Jul 2014 20:24:38 EST Exercise for Stress http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5748508 Summer is starting to unwind. It makes me sad because that means back to school soon. Last year I had a very difficult time with a new teacher who took an instant dislike to me. She made my life very difficult and unhappy. This Thursday is "bid day" when the support staff has to report and bid on the job they want to perform next school year. Unfortunately you are very limited to what you can bid on. If there are no new positions then you have to remain where you were last year. Even 1... This author also writes my very favorite series The Magical Cats which are also cozy mysteries.

I have also been listening to an audiobook "The Death of a Policeman" by MC Beaton. Fri, 25 Jul 2014 17:46:03 EST Late Start http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5745932 Taking 2 days off to do gardening seems to have zapped me. This morning I awoke in time to hit the trail by 7AM but I just wasn't feeling it. So I talked myself into waiting for DD to leave for her volunteer job (10:10AM) and then hit the trail.

So while I was waiting I got my gear on, loaded the car with my shopping bags since I usually go to Aldi after my Thursday walk/run and did some serious snuggling on Max the cat (who was very pleased).

Since it has been quite c... Thu, 24 Jul 2014 20:35:28 EST More Gardening http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5745150 Today has been quite cool (73) after a few days of very hot and humid weather. I find it delightful and I've gotten a lot of gardening done in the past two days that I have put off for most of the summer. My yard is really starting to shape up and I'm quite pleased with it. I wish, though, that I had taken some "before" pictures to really appreciate how much I've done. I've toted many loads of weeds and plants that I didn't want to our pile which today netted me over 6000 steps. I'm hopi... Wed, 23 Jul 2014 17:48:38 EST What a Hill. What a Climb. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5743549 Got up at 6 but felt unmotivated. So I checked the weather - it was 54 but the high is expected to be in the mid-80's. Hoo boy. So I scraped myself out of bed and got ready and headed to the park for a walk. I was on my second lap when one of my exercise friends stopped me and instead of just stopping and talking (which I usually do) I said "let's walk" and we did. It was really nice and, I know this will sound odd, I found out her first name. I have a lot of friends at the park that I ... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 15:43:34 EST Biking Makes For A Tired Squirrelmomma http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5742871 DH and I have gone bike riding 3 days in a row now. 22 miles the first day and 15 miles yesterday and today. Last night I couldn't hold my eyes open much past 8PM. I think it's all that extra fresh air or something. I don't feel tired after the ride, actually I feel pretty darn good. My feet aren't tired like they get after my long walks. And it has been really fun shaking up my exercise routine. I think I am going to incorporate more biking in every few days just to change up things.... Sun, 20 Jul 2014 17:46:15 EST Nice Day for a Bike Ride http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5741667 Today has been an amazing day. DD and I went for a long bike ride last night and it made me very happy to get out on my bike again. Then today DH and I went on an even longer ride - 22 miles! It was on a rails-to-trails trail which is very well maintained, smooth, and in a beautiful section of the county. The trail is tree-lined and part of it even bisects a lake! Just wonderful. I have never ridden the entire trail before but we headed out fairly early (8:30 AM). We did have to stop t... Fri, 18 Jul 2014 17:58:23 EST Instant Gratification http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5740294 This morning I got up at 7AM (Max didn't wake me early today) and was astonished how cold it was for July. 50 degrees outside! OMG. Luckily I always keep one long-sleeved top out when I pack away my winter clothes so today was the day to wear it.

I really felt in a cleaning mood too. So I, since I'm in a mix-it-up kinda groove, I decided to clean my house and walk later. DD took off to her volunteer job and I got to it.

Vaccuuming, dusting, cleaning counters. I cle... Wed, 16 Jul 2014 18:55:45 EST Changing Directions http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5739603 Today I went to the park, as usual, and just didn't feel like running. So I put on my walking shoes instead and walked the opposite way that I usually do. I have to admit it made the park look totally different. The area with the geese - much larger when coming at it from this direction, which is good because today I think they were ALL there. Some days when I am running I will see them move as a flock and get in front of cars (lots of honking from the cars). But today I got there from t... Tue, 15 Jul 2014 20:31:11 EST So Much Rain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5739390 Yesterday's bike ride was a bust. Loaded my bike and headed to older DD. She got out her bike and it was waiting in her driveway. I had her get on and ride first since she hadn't ridden it since last summer. Yup - back tire was low. So we went in search of the bike pump, which DH assured me was at her house (I phoned him at work to ask). No pump.

But while we were searching it started to sprinkle. I can deal with a little sprinkle. By the time we determined that the bike ... Tue, 15 Jul 2014 13:13:04 EST Longer Run Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5738603 After yesterday's bike ride I went looking for someone to do it again with me today. Later in the afternoon. No takers until I talked with older DD. She said she will so long as there aren't any hills involved. Okay! That will give me a chance to try out a section of the rails-to-trails that I haven't had the pleasure of riding on. We are meeting near the trail head about 5PM. I'm excited already.

Went to the park to run today. Got there by 7AM but I could already tell that... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 11:51:55 EST Bike Riding Fun http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5738074 Today has been a fun day. It rained all night and was still raining when I got up this morning. So DH and I read the paper at a leisurely pace, something we don't do often. Once the rain stopped we got dressed for our weekend walk. But today we both felt like something new. Somewhere new.

25 years ago we lived near a cemetery. It is peaceful near one. Cemeteries are highly walkable (and runnable) and we would do just that at least twice a day every day for the 8 years we li... Sun, 13 Jul 2014 18:38:39 EST But Wait - The Scale Moved You Say? YES! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5736716 Got up late today (7:10 AM). Max the cat spent the night snuggled between my DH and myself since it has been getting cooler at night. We sleep with our windows open and last night I requested a blanket at some point during the night. I think Max was grateful too as he was curled up in most of it this morning.

But after awakening I got my running gear on and was heading out when I discovered that the hood of our junker, the one that I drive to the park each day, was open. I phon... Fri, 11 Jul 2014 12:18:23 EST No Rain (Finally) So It Was a Great Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5735565 I had a fabulous day today. Had my 2 week blood pressure check and it was perfect. Ran 2 laps in the park (bit over 3 miles) and I did pretty good, only walked a couple of times. Didn't have time to swim today because of a union meeting that I had to attend in the early AM but I did finally get to go bike riding in the afternoon with my old friend. We had a blast and I wish we could go more often. I might try DH into going this weekend if he gets his bike out of storage and it still work... Wed, 9 Jul 2014 19:57:39 EST Yikes, the Scale is Moving the Wrong Way :( http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5734835 It has rained for the past 2 days now. I'm tired of rain. It rained 6 days out of 7 last week too, but at least it wasn't until the afternoon so I got to do something in the morning. Yesterday and today - rain all morning until after noon. Yuck. Yesterday we lost power too and it was raining so hard that we also had to close all the windows (no fresh air, gag). Today I was just going stir crazy, cooped up in my house. I needed to go somewhere, do something. My best friend from high sc... Tue, 8 Jul 2014 20:36:02 EST Walking Until I Just Can't Anymore http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5733121 My DH has been home for 3 days now. He will not run with me in the morning but will walk. So on the weekend I walk with DH and run only during the week on my own. The past 3 days we have been starting our walks in the park that I usually run in and then go out into the neighborhoods near there to look at the houses that are for sale, check out the area, etc. It has been an educating experience.

We have been looking for something smaller, on one level. A retirement home. But a... Sun, 6 Jul 2014 13:29:31 EST July 2, More of the Same http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5730533 Today was pretty similar to yesterday. Ran 3 laps. Actually more like 2-1/2 since I was so pooped that I ended up walking the last half. I was so thankful to get back to my car, I was exhausted. I can run much, much further now and I think I really tuckered myself out by pushing to go further today and I had nothing left at the end so just had to walk.

Stopped at DD's again to change into my swim gear. Today Grand-kittty did not beg me for breakfast. She seemed content to sim... Wed, 2 Jul 2014 11:35:31 EST July 1 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5729862 Big storm last night and it has helped cool things off. Light breeze and it is a day that just makes you glad to be alive.

Slept in until 6 today. Got myself around and ready for my morning run. Packed my swimsuit, towel, swimming shoes and grabbed a container of water. Ran only 2 laps today. My toe was hurting a bit.

But I met another woman who runs about the same speed as me. She was wearing a weight vest (20 pounds she said). She has been coming to the park a... Tue, 1 Jul 2014 12:56:48 EST July Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5729280 Today is the last day of June. I am a bit sad that it has gone by so quickly and I only have 8 more weeks of summer left. I still have to plan a getaway and I'm still looking longingly at the B&B walk in Vermont, just gotta figure out how to get there without having to drive. Something will come sooner or later.

Goals for July -
1) my scale is starting to move now (just a tich) but I am determined to make it move big time. So my goal weight-wise is to lose 10 pounds in Ju... Mon, 30 Jun 2014 19:00:23 EST So sleepy..... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5728852 This has been an unusual weekend for me. DH has had to work because of deadlines but should be done this week (hopefully). I miss him very much when he does nothing but work and I long for when we can finally retire.

Oldest DD has been away in Chicago since last Wednesday. I have been in charge of her cat, a wee thing who thinks she owns the house. Actually I refer to DD's house as "Lily's house." Lily is the cat, so you know who is in command there. I attempted to sleep over... Mon, 30 Jun 2014 08:08:14 EST Early Run http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5727079 Today was suppose to be DH's day off but he headed in to work because of some deadline. It makes me angry to think about it so I won't.

Because he left earlier than usual Max the cat didn't get his breakfast at 5:30, which is his usual time. And since dad was gone who better to get that breakfast than yours truly? So yesterday he let me sleep in, today he got me up early. Actually it worked out quite well. I got my running gear on and headed out and was pounding the pavement b... Fri, 27 Jun 2014 11:28:18 EST Too Much Fog Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5726656 Max the cat let me sleep in today. It was already 6:30 by the time I got up but it was so foggy out I thought it was still night time. Could barely see the driveway in front of the house. Could not see the road down the hill. So I figured I would stay in and wait for the fog to burn off and then head to the park for my morning run. Ha! Morning became 11AM by the time the fog lifted. And it was hot by then so I didn't get in as much walking as I had wanted. There was one point where I ... Thu, 26 Jun 2014 21:15:01 EST Fabulous News (squeal) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5724862 I have to post this blog early because I am so excited!

Went to the doctor today about my toe. Long story short - I have an ingrown toenail. Ouch. But I just need to soak it daily (and squeeze the pus out - gross I know) and it should be better in no time.

She also froze a spot on my lip that may or may not be skin cancer. We will know in a few more weeks if it returns and she has to do a biopsy. I'm not really concerned (yet) since it is so small and I think we cau... Tue, 24 Jun 2014 12:23:22 EST Fitbit Slave http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5724077 I am a slave to my Fitbit. Today I awoke and discovered that I needed a new battery. Last year that happened to me and I didn't get credit for an entire day's steps. So at 6:30AM I'm on my way to Meijer to get a new battery. I'm gonna install it too before hitting the trail at the park. I get to the park and I discover that I've forgetten my iPod with my book loaded on it. OMG I can't walk 7 miles without something to listen to! Well, I'm suppose to go to Aldi after my walk, I'll just ... Mon, 23 Jun 2014 11:39:18 EST Love Running! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5723031 I am really loving the running part of my program. If I need steps, I run somewhere. I've been dreaming of running too. Coincidence? Probably, but it keeps me really focused and excited for my morning workout. So far I haven't noticed a change in my weight ( 234 ) but I know it will come.

Tomorrow - back on the bike again! Sat, 21 Jun 2014 21:13:51 EST
