SPAYYOURCAT's SparkPeople Blog SPAYYOURCAT's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Making progress it is own reward I belong to Snap Fitness, thanks to my hubby, who pays my membership. At the beginning of March, my trainer encouraged me to sign up for the Snap Fitness 8 week challenge. Last week was the final weigh in and....drum roll please.....I lost the greatest percentage of weight of the people signed up at my gym and came in 21st in the country. Woohoo.

I didn't make it into the money for the nation, but I did win top prize at my gym. It's 3 months free. My husband appreciates the s... Thu, 10 May 2012 17:54:00 EST Stepping it up a bit After a couple months of fast paced, 8% incline, walking on the treadmill with a weighted vest, the trainer wants me to mix up my cardio with some jogging. She said to level the treadmill out and take off the vest (yeah!).
It is so much easier to jog now than just a few months ago, actually managing 15 minutes of jogging sprinkled in between 45 minutes of fast walking on my first session. It is surprising how fast my heart rate comes back down now compared to last year. Just further... Wed, 2 May 2012 15:13:10 EST Weekend happening This last Saturday my husband, Chris, and I attended a black tie event through his work. He looked quite handsome in his suit and I was happy to fit into normal size dressy clothes-woohoo! The best part of the entire night was dancing together, right in front of the stage, as Earth Wind & Fire played.. Mon, 30 Apr 2012 15:38:43 EST How many calories would it burn? As a society, we know that obesity is a problem in this country. So why do we continue to ignore it and encourage the eating of unhealthy foods?

One of our vendors brought us lunch today. Guess what it was...Pizza of course. That seems to be the only thing anyone ever "buys" for lunch around here whether it is a vendor or the boss. Sure, it's easy and relatively cheap, but that is as far as it goes. I work WAY too hard at exercising and eating healthy to waste any of my eff... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 14:38:32 EST Member event at the museum Last Thursday my husband & I enjoyed a sensible dinner at Annies Cafe on east Colfax and then attended the monthly Science Lounge event at the Denver Museum of Natural History.

The event was "Crack the Case" and the idea was to figure out, through a series of clues, and forensic tests, who stole a valuable statue from a display of Russian carvings.

There were 4 tests to be performed: DNA, blood typing, fingerprinting and matching hair samples. The blood typing was t... Wed, 21 Mar 2012 15:00:26 EST Small Plateau busted Last week I got down under 200lbs for the 1st time in a decade (?). That was he same time the trainer increased my weights for strength training and put me on a new cardio workout. That apparently caused a slight increase in weight and iI gained back 3 pounds.
Made me anxious, however, I stuck with the plan; increasing the cardio from 45 minutes to an hour and am once again under 200. Hopefully the steady loss of 2 pounds a week will resume now. Thu, 23 Feb 2012 12:43:59 EST 1st night of treadmill with weighted vest Last night was the 1st night of the new cardio program to walk at 3.8mph on an 8% incline for 45 minutes or more, WITH a 20lb weighted vest on. I couldn't quite hang with all of the parameters for the entire 45 minutes; taking a 1 minute break on the 10's and bringing the incline and speed down a tick near the end.
Still for 1st attempt at that intensity level it went pretty well. I know my performance will improve over the next couple weeks, until I can do the whole thing at full in... Wed, 15 Feb 2012 15:00:56 EST New workout & stepping it up with a weighted vest My husband and I are attending a fancy event in April and I want to get as close to 3rd goal as safely possible by then-another 20-25 pounds I hope. So at my request my trainer is changing up my workouts to help me lean out a little quicker. Starting last night we are focusing on heavier weights Monday-Wednesday and Fridays, and on alternate days I am doing cardio on my own. I definately feel last nights weight workout today-but that's good, I know it's working.
She had me buy a 20# v... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 14:00:48 EST What works in my journey I have lost almost 50 pounds since starting this journey in September of last year, with another 30-40 to go. Every day I read blogs from folks that are struggling and don't seem to be making the most of what SparkPeople and the information available here has to offer. I am writing this blog in the hopes that those folks might learn something and be successful in their own journeys. Most everything below can be found in an article right here on Sparkpeople.

#1-LOG ON TO SPARKPEO... Thu, 9 Feb 2012 18:27:55 EST Hubby and I are making positive progress-YeaH! Even though my husband moving out last week seemed almost like the end of the world, things are actually pretty positive. We have been talking AT LEAST once a day (sometimes 3 or 4 times) and spent time together Saturday, Sunday and again tonight. We held hands and sat close together and lots of other little things that we had forgotten to do for, and with each other over the last 10 years.
We both feel like we are relearning an appreciation for each other and as each day passes I feel... Thu, 2 Feb 2012 01:30:43 EST Despite marraige issues-still making progress My heart is tearing in half. Husband moved out last Friday to get his head together. After a really rough time in December, we had been getting closer for the last few weeks when this happened. He said he almost stayed but had signed a 6 month lease and believed that he should go through with it. He was crying, I was crying. We both want things to work out-we both want to be happy together.

I have read several articles about marraiges that hit bottom, but survive to come back... Tue, 31 Jan 2012 13:33:11 EST Baggy jeans I hate clothes shopping and especially trying clothes on in dressing rooms with their in-your-face GIANT mirrors which you can't avoid looking into and store lighting that flatters nothing. But...My jeans were getting to the point where I either had to buy new ones or start wearing suspenders.

At the store I pulled the size needed off the shelve (2 sizes smaller than current pair) and held them up to my hips for a quick comparison, and knew right away they were mis-labeled. I g... Sat, 14 Jan 2012 01:27:16 EST Semi-fiasco at the gym Since the roads were slick, I left work early tonight to be sure I was on time for my 5:30 workout with the trainer. Arrived 10 minutes early only to find out from one of the other trainers that my trainer (who is a flight attendant by day) was delayed by her last flight and was going to be an hour late.
He asked if I wanted to wait or reschedule-I said I'd wait and just do light cardio meanwhile, since my scheduled workout was supposed to be intense cardio/interval training. He offe... Thu, 12 Jan 2012 00:20:24 EST Fun at the gym Last night my best friend went to the gym with me to see what it is like. It was fun (did I really use gym and fun in the same paragraph?) because we were able to take our time and work out on all the equipment, including some upper-body machines which the trainer has never had me use.

Upon using those machines, it was fairly clear why she doesn't use them...they do NOT require both arms to work equally. I had to focus on using my left arm or my stronger right arm would do all ... Sun, 8 Jan 2012 15:28:23 EST New workout from trainer tonight Tonight was the 1st of 2 new workouts that the trainer has designed for me. I'll do the 2nd one on Wednesday and she says whichever one I hate is the one she'll use!

It was a solid 30 minutes of jumping jacks, lunges, pushups, crunches, step-ups and running in place, intermingled with various free weight and resistance band work. The gym was really hot but I made it through!

320 Mon, 2 Jan 2012 23:24:44 EST Free cat toys - Meow! I am sitting here watching Mongo, our 2 year old poly-dactyl cat, play with a cornstarch packing peanut. He has been at it for at least 30 minutes and it has become a nightly ritual since I brought them home. The cornstarch dissolves so there is no risk of choking and it adds a comedic element when it sticks to his lips, face or feet. His next favorite toy is the strings on my sweat jacket; every morning one or the other is pulled all the way to that side. Milk bottle tops are always ente... Fri, 30 Dec 2011 23:15:57 EST Arkham Horror - game or a test of patience? A while back my husband and I decided to try to spend more time in each others company, so I thought I would get a new game for us to play. He doesn't like Scrabble or Boggle or math type games and I am bored to death with Clue (but he loves it). So after researching on Amazon, I settled for a euro-style game called Arkham Horror that seemed to be along the line of Clue but with a greater variety of outcomes.

It is set in the 1920's and based on the macabre stories of H.P. Love... Wed, 28 Dec 2011 00:31:10 EST Good friend, lost and found One of my best friends over the last few years, had been avoiding getting together for some time now. This was disappointing as together we had humanely trapped numerous stray or feral cats, had them vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and returned them to their home territory and were almost always expected to be in each others company on the weekends and at humane events.
The last time we had talked (months ago) she was supposed to come by, but cancelled out at the last minute for the 3rd... Sun, 25 Dec 2011 14:39:38 EST Time warp! One of my daily goals is to do at least 10 minutes of exercise at home on those days I don't train at the gym. Last night I downloaded one of those "various artists" MP3's from Amazon with some really great songs from the 90's. Tonight I gave it a try on the treadmill and before I knew it 10 minutes had turned into 30. 231 Sat, 24 Dec 2011 22:57:32 EST Thanks for the offer... Yesterday at work, one of our drivers offered to help me buy some new clothes as he noticed I had lost a signifigant amount of weight but was still wearing my old clothes. I told him that I appreciated the thought very much, but I am waiting until I meet goal and then my husband promised to buy me a new wardrobe. It really made me feel good though! Woohoo! Fri, 23 Dec 2011 15:24:03 EST 1/2 pound and his buddies For the past 2 weeks the last 1/2 pound I needed to lose to make my first of 3 goals, kept sneaking back on my person when I wasn't looking. I worked out hard, drank my water, stayed in my calorie range but that darn 1/2 pound would creep into the bedroom in the middle of the night, crawl under the covers and attach itself to my hips. I would get up in the morning and there it would be; staring back at me from the numbers on the scale.
Mind you, I am not someone who normally checks the... Tue, 13 Dec 2011 23:45:37 EST Thank you SparkPeople you are the best! There for a few minutes tonight, SparkPeople was down for maintenance. I was in the middle of putting together my dinner and needed to calculate the calories for the Cranberry-orange relish I was making. I searched the internet trying to find another recipe calculator that was as easy to use and effective as SparkPeople's and couldn't find one that even compared.
SparkPeople has helped me in so many ways-by giving me tools, encouragement, knowledge and the ability to share with and lea... Wed, 30 Nov 2011 00:41:34 EST Thank goodness today is over Rough day at work, then a hard workout with the trainer. I can feel my core tightening up, and starting to see a little definition in my arms. Got to watch the last few minutes of the very 1st Zumba class at the gym tonight. Something I might think about down the road, but for now I will stick with the trainer-I need the accountability and the motivation. Tue, 29 Nov 2011 00:47:11 EST Managed to stay in range and still had Turkey dinner-far out! As I am wrapping up the day and feel empowered having eaten Turkey day dinner, Including pumpkin pie (without the crust) and still stayed within my range. The tracker showed pretty high on carbs, but I don't care today. Woohoo! Fri, 25 Nov 2011 01:03:28 EST Van's Muffin Crowns vs Vitatop I have been a fan of Vitatop muffins for about a year now. I almost always save aside enough calories to enjoy a deep chocolate one at the end of the day, although I do not always have one. A couple months ago, Target started selling Van's Muffin Crowns, and tonight I decided to try the Wild Blueberry flavor.
Even though blueberry muffins are one of my favorites in the world of high-calorie, not-good-for-you foods, Van's version is definitely NOT my favorite "healthy" muffin. Despit... Tue, 22 Nov 2011 01:50:19 EST Migun massage bed The gym I go to has a Migun massage bed and members can try it free for a week. The price is normally $15 month for unlimited use-which seems reasonable enough. Since my personal trainer will be gone for the next week, I figured this was a good time to do my trial run with the bed, as it will motivate me to workout in her absence so I can use the bed afterwards.
The set-up was simple; pull white paper across the bed, take off shoes, lie down with head and feet orientated as instructe... Fri, 18 Nov 2011 22:29:22 EST Cooked scale has NO nutritional value Ugh-I killed my digital kitchen scale tonight! Not on purpose, for I loved that little scale. So much so that I always kept it handy in the kitchen so I could weigh my portions any time. But keeping it handy doesn't work out so well when you think you are turning on the front burner, where this weeks ground turkey taco meat will be simmering, but instead turn on the rear burner upon which your handy dandy scale is sitting.
By the time I realized he turkey meat hadn't started to cook... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 21:39:08 EST If he only knew... My husband is being a real selfish, self serving, moody jerk lately. But rather than dwell on that I just want to say thank you to everyone out there on SparkPeople-you help me get through those days without killing him!
304 Thu, 10 Nov 2011 00:28:48 EST Healthy & easy snack ideas A few food things that I have recently discovered that I thought I would share...

PB2 Powdered peanut butter-2 tablespoons is only 45 calories (compared to nearly 200 for regular PB). I think it tastes great and when spread on a few stalks of celery it makes a substantial yet healthy snack for under 60 calories. I ordered PB2 from

Inside out Arugula/Turkey wraps-Take a handful of Arugala, drizzle a little bit of fat free Italian dressing or balsamic glaze o... Wed, 9 Nov 2011 01:06:36 EST Got the house to myself for a couple days! Don't get me wrong, I love my husband. But I don't mind having the house to myself this weekend. I get to hog the whole bed, keep the thermostat where I want it, don't have to cook for him or clean up after him or listen to him snore for 2 whole days-WooHoo! 334 Sat, 5 Nov 2011 01:02:57 EST Someone noticed! I know the people at work have seen some chances in my weight and appearance lately, but I think they may be too much in denial of their own conditions to say something and my husband won't even began to notice until AT LEAST another 20-30 pounds are gone. But the lady that comes around work and sells burritos commented today " must be losing weight, you look thinner and younger." That was the 1st time someone has really come out with a comment that made me feel "wow".
And just ... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 01:05:22 EST Chipotle taco seasoning-yum! For anyone that hasn't tried it yet, Ortega makes a Chipotle taco seasoning mix that is super yummy. I order it by the case from Amazon, since the local stores don't carry it.
I don't generally like food that is really spicy, but this seasoning has a smoky sweet quality that somehow mellows the heat a bit. This weekend we made a double batch using ground turkey, onions, and finely chopped zucchini. I especially love it on lettuce leaves for a guilt free supper. YUM! It is a bit... Wed, 2 Nov 2011 01:06:09 EST Hold on to those girls After doing some comparison shopping online, I finally settled on an Enell brand sports bra. (Who would have thought I would EVER spend $60+ on a bra?) But it got excellent ratings and was even mentioned by name on one of the Spark People experts fitness articles that focused on the subject. Sexy, it isn't, but it should do the job quite well.
Next I am on a quest to find a moisture wicking shirt so maybe I won't sweat quite so much. Something with sleeves to cover up my flabby upp... Tue, 1 Nov 2011 01:50:39 EST Oct 30th Not much happened today. Did my 30 minutes+ for the work challenge. Cooked enough to last a few days I hope. Still sore from the last workout with Brenda-think I'll go to bed early tonight. Sun, 30 Oct 2011 23:28:38 EST Stayed on track even at Cracker Barrel Today was mom's birthday and she wanted to go to Cracker Barrel. I was worried because I didn't remember seeing much on the menu that wasn't fried, or covered in gravy on my last visit a couple few years back. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the choices in the "Lo-Carb" section of their revamped menu and opted for the grilled lemon trout. It was very good! Best guess is that it was about 5 oz of fish and I took the skin off, had some super good carrots, a side salad and turnip gree... Sun, 30 Oct 2011 01:37:41 EST Saved by Swiss Miss Felt those bad old evening munchies coming on again tonight but only had about 100 calories to spare. I made some Swiss Miss no sugar added variety and thank goodness-That was the treat that did the trick! Happy Halloween! Sat, 29 Oct 2011 01:17:34 EST Oct 26th Did upper body tonight with Brenda. Did my 3 sets of modified pushups without nearly as much trouble as just 2 weeks ago. Held a modified plank for 42 seconds tonight-a new record. Really glad tonight was a workout night-my energy level had been low all day, now it is up a little. I plan to go to bed early tonight though and see if that helps my cardio only workout tomorrow night.
It snowed about 6" today; a very wet snow. Many of the trees lost branches under the weight. There wil... Wed, 26 Oct 2011 22:54:07 EST Goodbye my summer friend... That thing between us had already lasted longer than I ever dreamed possible, but still, it's so hard to say goodbye. I will always cherish these few months we had. You were so fresh and even a little dirty at times, but yet your tenderness and good taste always kept me wanting for more. And though I may meet others that remind me of you, I will know they can never compare.

So it is with great sadness that I picked you clean tonight. There is nothing left but the twisted vines ... Tue, 25 Oct 2011 23:16:03 EST Oct 24th-Jumping rope-say what? Had a real hard time at the gym tonight trying to jump rope. Between the rope being kind of kinked up, my arms and legs having forgotten how to work together after decades of abstaining from jumping rope, AND trying to get 70 pounds of excess baggage air born, it was not a pretty sight. I think I'll get a rope and practice at home where the only ones to witness the comedy of errors will be the cats.
After tonight's strength training session, I did 30 minutes of cardio (and then some) ... Mon, 24 Oct 2011 23:49:50 EST Oct 23 Made myself go to the gym for the 1st time by myself. Brenda said I should do 3 sets of 15 reps each of her secret Butt-Blaster exercise. So I did. And then did 20 minutes each on the elliptical, treadmill and stationary bike. Finished up with 3 sets of crunches on the ball and 3 sets of reverse crunches. I killed a lot of calories today. Making shrimp fajitas for dinner with peppers from the garden-Yum. Sun, 23 Oct 2011 22:28:47 EST Promise Promise to myself: No matter how bad things get at home I will not lose focus on this journey. Thu, 20 Oct 2011 01:20:12 EST I have to keep reminding myself...there is still a long way to go. Although I am feeling pretty good about the weight I have lost in the last month, and how my clothes are loose, I must remind myself that the battle is far from over. While the progress to this point is meaningful, it is still only a partial victory and in the past, partial victories allowed me to become complacent and lose focus along the way.
So it is with greater commitment and higher insight that I vow to win this battle, to kill as many calories as I can, one sweat drop at a time, ... Fri, 14 Oct 2011 00:59:46 EST Personal trainer - The day after ...Day 1 Yes, I am a bit sore today. We focused on legs and lower body exercises for the 1st session. The clubs machines were all relatively easy this 1st time, but the crunches and plank position did me in quickly. After 30 minutes of machines and mat work, there was 30 minutes on the treadmill at 3mph, increasing the incline by 1% each minute until it got to 15% and then backing down 1% each minute. Next time I will be sure to get one of the treadmills by the fan and take a towel to wipe the s... Thu, 13 Oct 2011 00:02:51 EST 1st workout with personal trainer Today was the 1st of 10 scheduled workouts with a personal trainer. Although I have tried and only partially succeeded to lose weight in the past, I am determined this time and enlisting a personal trainer is just part of my plan to succeed for good this time.

I plan to be very sore tomorrow.
Wed, 12 Oct 2011 00:06:13 EST Sauteed spinach is awesome! For anyone who hasn't tried it, I highly recommend this easy way of cooking spinach that comes out oh-so-yummy! Just saute a few minced garlic cloves (adjust to your taste) in some olive oil and when the garlic begins sizzling just a little, start throwing in spinach. You can fit an entire 16 oz container in a large skillet. Keep flipping the spinach until it is fairly wilted. Put on a plate, sprinkle w/ lemon juice and enjoy. Add some crumbled feta if you like.
You can eat a LOT of... Mon, 25 Jan 2010 22:38:51 EST Time to get serious again I'm not really into blogging but what the heck...after being with Spark People for some time now, I thought it was time to give it a try. Maybe it will help me get refocused.

Last time I checked (before xmas) I had lost just over 30 pounds. I was real happy about that. I actually did real good through xmas and new years but then started backsliding with the after holiday humdrums. I am sure I have put a couple pounds back on, but I don't want to weigh myself again until I feel ... Sat, 23 Jan 2010 13:45:45 EST
