Tue, 16 Dec 2014 16:21:45 EST Day 246 Update: Chicken Races Hi Everyone

I hope you are having a great Monday!

Today is Day 246 of my streak -- about 45 minutes today spread throughout the day.

Last week was a little crazy around here. We had a big storm here in California that gave us a bunch of much-needed rain. We were lucky that the winds were lighter than the original forecast.

It was funny to see people surfing on Lake Tahoe because of wind gusts that reached 112mph in that area. Here is a 7-second v... Mon, 15 Dec 2014 20:56:27 EST Weekly Email & Blog Check-In: Recipes! Good luck to all streakers out there! I did 15 minutes on the exercise bike this morning while reading to help me wake up.

Here's a fun story from yesterday at our house: As I have mentioned in the past, our 2 boys love gathering the eggs from our chickens. Fri, 28 Nov 2014 14:52:56 EST Day 226 Update: Sunny morning Good morning SparkPeople!

Just a quick update this morning. I completed 10 minutes of fitness so far so I can cross off Day 226 of my streak. Part of my 10 minutes was outside on the mini-trampoline in the morning sunshine.

This morning when I went to open the chicken coop, Snoozy was already laying an egg. The chickens like it when we put food in a bowl and hold it for them or in our hand so they can be "hand-fed".

Hope everyone has a great day!

... Hi Everyone

Hope you had a great weekend!

Today is Day 218 of my 10+ Fitness Minutes Streak. Just did 5 minutes on the rowing machine and am about to do quick weights.

Here's a fun update building on yesterday's blog about my chickens: Snoozy laid her first egg yesterday -- woohoo!! Fri, 14 Nov 2014 18:09:10 EST Day 210 Update: Fun Weekend Hi Everyone

Hope you are having a good weekend! Today is Day 210 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. 40 minutes for the day.

Today was pretty quiet after a busy day yesterday. The highlight of the weekend was my boy's soccer game yesterday. They have had a rough season so far with no wins (0-4). Yesterday they fell behind 1-0 at half. But, they were playing much better. My oldest plays defense and was getting some great saves and clearing the ball well along with hi... Hopefully some of them read the Mini-Book and it can help them reach their goals!

Today is Day 175 of my 10+ streak and I’m feeling great. Just talked to someone on SP with a 1,270-day streak!

The past week has been an interesting “nature display” at our house – some positive and some negative (ok, downright scary).

First, yesterday one of our 6 c... Thu, 2 Oct 2014 18:54:46 EST Day 164 Update: Good Trip to Cincinnati Hi Everyone

Today is Day 164 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. Happy streaking to anyone else out there joining in the fun. Today’s highlight was doing pushups, lunges, and stretching outside. The nice fall weather is here.

I had a fun trip to Cincinnati last week to visit with the SparkPeople team. Our small team is like a family in a fun office in downtown Cincinnati.

One project we worked on together is the launch of the 10+ Fitness minutes challenge Mi... Fri, 19 Sep 2014 07:12:30 EST Day 155 Update: Positive (but sad) sports story Hi Everyone

Today is Day 155 of my 10 or more fitness minutes streak. Best wishes to anyone else out there streaking with me! Before writing this blog this morning, I challenged myself to get to 10 minutes here in my hotel room and did: 1 minute jogging in place; 2 minutes pushups; 2 minutes lunges; 8 minutes stretching.

I’m in Cincinnati for a short trip to meet with most of the SparkPeople team at our main headquarters. We spread the spark yesterday at a Susan Kome... Mon, 15 Sep 2014 08:51:12 EST Day 150 Update: Fun milestone Hi Everyone

Today is Day 150 of my 10+ Fitness minutes streak. It’s fun to reach this milestone and not have any burn-out – I’m ready for many more days ahead!

Thanks a bunch to everyone who participated in the 10+ Fitness Minutes Mini-Book survey. I got many great comments that helped me make some tweaks. Thanks for your help! The Mini-Book is now with our design team to make it look better. Wed, 10 Sep 2014 19:22:35 EST Day 143 Update: 10+ Fitness Minutes Mini-Book Survey Hi All

Today is Day 143 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. Did 23 minutes today (yes, you can tell I used to be an accountant!). Today’s highlight was mini-trampoline outside.

If you are interested, here is a survey for the 10+ Fitness Minutes Challenge Mini-Book:

Shoot -- there is a tech issue with how parts of our site handles urls that start with "https" vs. just "http" -- if you want to get to the survey, can you cut and paste this url (sorry for the hass... Wed, 3 Sep 2014 22:03:16 EST Day 141 Update: Mobile App Upgrade Launch Hi Everyone

Hope everyone in the US and Canada is having a great holiday! Happy Monday to everyone else.

Today is Day 141 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak – about an hour today spread throughout the day. It’s getting easier and easier – like the rowing machine was easier today so I did it longer.

One of the highlights this weekend was watching The Black Stallion with the family for movie night. That was one of my favorite books and movies as a kid, so it wa... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 21:19:35 EST Day 137 Update: Fun Partner Signed Hi Everyone!

Today is Day 137 of m y 10+ Fitness Minutes streak. Today’s highlight was swimming with my boys. They like it when we play “tickle shark” where they are on rafts and I have to be the shark that catches them and tickles them. Then the other one has to rescue the boy being tickled. They also have a hose with a nozzle to shoot at me (although sometimes I capture the hose and turn it on them so they hide under the rafts).

Just a quick update today: it’s an ... Thu, 28 Aug 2014 21:37:48 EST Day 136 Update: More Lunges Hi Everyone – hope you are having a great week!

I continue seeing fun signs of hitting the exercise tipping point mentioned in my mini-book during this part of the streak – now at Day 136.

I mentioned last week increasing the number of lunges I do because of more leg strength. I did that again today just by one additional lunge per type of lunge that I do.

If you aren’t familiar with lunges, I’d recommend giving them a try if you are medically able to do this... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 20:28:46 EST Day 133 Update: Giant Teachers Today is Day 133 of my 10+ Fitness Minutes Streak. I think a bug is trying to get me, so I’m taking it easy and fighting it off with tricks like putting oregano essential oil on my feet. About 20 easy fitness minutes so far today.

I may have gotten something last night at the San Jose Giants minor league baseball game. The reason for the name of this blog is that my son earned a trip to the game with his 3rd grade teacher so we all went to the game. There was a complication las... Sun, 24 Aug 2014 19:30:24 EST Day 131 Update: Sneak peek at 10+ Fitness Minutes Mini-Book Day 131 Update: Sneak peek at 10+ Fitness Minutes Mini-Book

Hi Everyone – hope you are having a great Friday! Today is Day 131 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. I just came in from doing mini-trampoline in the sunshine to cross 10 minutes for the day so far.

I’m excited today to give you a chance to read the 10+ Fitness Minutes Mini-book if you are interested (reading it takes about 30 minutes altogether).

Here is a link to view the PDF:

www.sp... Fri, 22 Aug 2014 12:44:24 EST Day 127 Update: Earthquakes Game Today is Day 127 of my 10 or more fitness minutes streak. About 25 minutes so far today to keep the streak alive. Today I increased my number of lunges just a bit. I’ve learned the hard way to never increase lunges too much or you end up with lunge legs the next few days and can barely walk. Of course, that’s a great way to look at this in general – just keep increasing one step at a time.

Thanks a bunch for all the great comments on my last blog that was a tribute to Robin Wil... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 17:18:14 EST Day 122 Update: Robin Williams: O Captain! My Captain! Today is Day 122 of my 10 or more fitness minutes streak. About 20 minutes so far today.

Today I want to reflect on the passing of Robin Williams for a couple of reasons.

First, his movie Dead Poet’s Society is one of the top movies that moved me to take action (and of course, was only one of his masterpieces). I remember watching it at the suggestion of my friend Rob sometime in 1996. I can’t remember for sure, but this was either just before or just after we both ... Wed, 13 Aug 2014 14:16:55 EST Day 121 Update: Urban Survivalist Hi everyone! Today is Day 121 of my 10 or more fitness minutes streak.

Yesterday was a fun day in the streak. I took the day off work and we went to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for my youngest son’s 8th birthday celebration. He took his best friend and his big brother as guests. So, I got to spend most of the day riding fun rides with 3 boys. I’ll remember this one for a long time because it was the first time that both boys were tall enough and brave enough to ride just ab... Tue, 12 Aug 2014 21:08:46 EST Day 116 Update: NFL Preseason Today is Day 116 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. About 45 minutes today so far. Just a quick blog update today. I’ll get some more fitness minutes today watching a little of the NFL pre-season games. My original hometown Cincinnati Bengals are playing the KC Chiefs and our current hometown 49ers are playing the Ravens.

Crazy that football season is just about here! My youngest son loves watching football – he even gets excited about watching the draft at age 7 (almost 8). ... Thu, 7 Aug 2014 19:56:03 EST Day 115 Update: Writing Today is day 115 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. Today’s highlight: while doing several different types of exercises (exercise bike, rowing machine, and crunches), I could feel that I’ve jumped up to another level of fitness. This is right about the time where I expect that to happen from past experience doing a streak – when big changes start to happen in the 90-180 day range that makes this so much more fun.

This will be a quick update because I’m on a roll writing the 10+ f... Wed, 6 Aug 2014 20:31:33 EST Day 114 Update: How to Train Your Dragon Today is Day 114 of the 10 or more fitness minutes streak – about 40 minutes today spread throughout the day.

We finished watching How to Train Your Dragon last night as a family as part of my oldest’s 11th birthday. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s really not just a kid’s movie, it’s a masterpiece with great “movie magic” (IMO). I still think I like the first one a little better, but the sequel is also great (many people like the sequel better). We saw the sequel on vacatio... Tue, 5 Aug 2014 20:33:48 EST Day 112 Update: Blackjack Recovery and my Jumping Bean Hope everyone is having a great Sunday and looking forward to a fun week of taking small positive steps to reach goals!

Today is Day 112 of my 10 or more fitness minutes streak. Did 35 minutes today.

Two quick updates:

1 – Thanks to everyone for thoughts about Blackjack our chicken. She has made an amazing recovery and is back in action today. It was so cute last night, her two closest friends (she’s the alpha of this group of 4 young chicks) slept right ne... Sun, 3 Aug 2014 21:05:02 EST Day 111 Update: Back from Vacation Today is Day 111 of the 10 or more fitness minute streak. I returned today from a quick 4-night vacation to Monterey, CA. We had a great time on the beach and hiking around town having fun. One splurge I had is my favorite clam chowder from Old Fisherman’s Grotto on the Monterey pier.

One thing that was very noticeable on this trip is that my leg strength has increased considerably because of the streak. Just walking around, I can tell my legs are stronger. I really love this ... Sat, 2 Aug 2014 20:42:25 EST Day 105 Update: Hot! Hope everyone is having a great weekend and ready for a positive week of taking one small step at a time to reach your goals!

Today is Day 105 of my streak. It’s been a hot weekend out here in the SF Bay Area with temperatures close to 100 yesterday and still hot today though a little cooler.

This weekend’s highlight was taking my boys out to play tennis with them/give them a tennis lesson today. They are both excited about playing and I’ve convinced them that tennis i... Sun, 27 Jul 2014 20:51:38 EST Day 102 Update: I Love It When A Plan Comes Together Today is Day 102 of the 10+ streak. I’m at 20 minutes so far today – including 3 minutes of calf raises while waiting for an appointment.

Good news! My boys have decided that they would like to start their own 10 or more fitness minutes streak – yesterday was Day 1 of tracking it for both of them. They are really excited. Now, I know as a Dad that this excitement can wear off especially with kids, so I have a fun reward in mind for them.

They don’t know this yet, b... Thu, 24 Jul 2014 18:01:57 EST Day 101 Update: Teaching My Boys to Jump Rope Hi everyone!

Today is Day 101 of the 10+ streak – first first day of the second 100. I’m currently at 45 minutes for the day.

Today’s highlight was teaching my boys to jump rope. It was an interesting experience. My oldest got the hang of it quickly and I helped him set small goals to do 3 jumps in a row, then 5 in a row, then 10, and then finally 25 in a row. His highest was 26 and he was super-proud of himself and then went and did some other exercises.

... Wed, 23 Jul 2014 20:19:46 EST Day 100 Update: New Project – Back To My Roots Woohoo – today is Day 100 of the 10 or more fitness minutes streak! I’m at 33 minutes so far today. Yesterday’s funny fitness highlight is that my car had a flat tire from a slow leak. So, I used a bike pump to pump it back up – talk about practical fitness minutes :).

I was just telling some people on our team today about one of the best parts about using this streak strategy: that once you hit a certain point, then there’s just no way you will stop your streak unless some typ... Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:45:04 EST Day 99 Update: Celebrity Wife Swap Day 99 Update: Celebrity Wife Swap

Today is Day 99 of the 10 or more fitness minutes streak – one more to triple digits! I got over the 10 minute hurdle with a morning workout of mini-trampoline, pushups, and stretching. Nice and easy. Good luck this week to all the other Streakers out there :).

Last night for family night (movie & popcorn), the movie seemed a bit scary to the kids so we stopped it and watched Celebrity Wife Swap instead (some may say that was the s... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 14:54:32 EST Day 98 Update: Have a great week! Hi Everyone

Today is Day 98 of the streak. It was a pretty quiet day here – a highlight was a good Sunday afternoon nap :).

Hope everyone had a good weekend and is ready to take one small step at a time this week to reach goals together!

Oh, here’s a photo of our chicken named Snoozy I mentioned last week. She’s a sweetie and likes to be held and snuggle in your arms – and also likes running around the coop playing chase with her friend Brown Bear (and runnin... Sun, 20 Jul 2014 21:54:14 EST Day 97 Update: Rolling Stones Workout (Song of the Day)! Happy Saturday Everyone!

Today is Day 97 of the 10 or more fitness minutes streak. I’m currently at 42 minutes spread throughout the day in small doses.

I started something fun today: Now when I do exercises like pushups, crunches, lunges, plank, lower back, light weights, etc., I’ll do them in my office and choose motivational songs on YouTube as I do the exercises.

The Song of the Day today is Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones. Here’s the story why: <BR... Sat, 19 Jul 2014 20:17:24 EST Day 96 Update: Lucky Photo Today is Day 96 of the 10 or more fitness minutes streak. I’m not finished for the day, but crossed 10 minutes safely.

I hope everyone’s ready for a great weekend! I will check-in both days this weekend if you want to stop by to let me know when you get 10+ fitness minutes if you’d like to participate.

I’m working to take this 10+ project to the next level and might need some beta-testers out there if anyone is interested.

Here’s a fun Friday photo. I’ve st... Fri, 18 Jul 2014 19:12:49 EST Day 95 Update: Uneventful (by design) Hello SP-Land! Today is Day 95 of the streak.

Sometimes when I write these blogs, I feel like I need to have some mind-blowing update. But, really, I don’t – and that’s a big point of the design of a 10 (or more) minute fitness streak for all of us. Consistency really is the key.
